- oOLiquidNightOo, on 10/11/2007, -5/+52when trent lott speaks up on your behalf, you know that:
a) you're white anglo saxon.
b) struggling politically.
c) *****.
d) all of the above. - InfamousAtheist, on 10/12/2007, -6/+46Trent Lott... he's the racist from Mississippi, right?
Pretty sad that people still listen to a single word he says. His opinion means zero to anyone with half a brain. - littlebylittle, on 10/11/2007, -4/+35Lott should keep his mouth shut.
- littlebylittle, on 10/11/2007, -6/+30I disagree. Conservatives should take their Party back from NeoCons. You guys have been shafted by a small group.
- jackelsmack, on 10/12/2007, -1/+25Reminds me of Gingrich's recent "list of stuff Republicans shouldn't talk about". The new rule is if it has anything to do with the President, shut up about it.
- wonderchemist, on 10/11/2007, -2/+25First rule of Bush Club, you don't talk about Bush Club.
- shawnfassett, on 10/12/2007, -6/+27Conservatism is dead
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -2/+19That was a dumb thing for Lott to say.
Election year is coming up and like it or not Republicans up for reelection are linked with Bush, the war. It was in their best interest to let the public know that they are not the same page with Bush anymore. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -5/+20Yes, he took the official "Racist Republican *****" throne when Strom (finally) died, a step up from his old title of "Racist Republican Asshat"..
- totorototoro, on 10/11/2007, -1/+12My favorite Trent Lott moments:
Clinton attempts to appoint a black judge using a recess appointment: Lott: "any appointment of a federal judge during a recess should be opposed."
http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m1355/is_8_100/ai_77097490
Bush attempts to appoint a white judge using a recess appointment: Lott: "Judge Pickering's record deems this recess appointment fully appropriate."
http://www.cnn.com/2004/ALLPOLITICS/01/17/bush.pickering/ - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+11OMG governmental transparency, not that!
- wendelgee2, on 10/11/2007, -4/+13Conservativism is a regressive philosophy that will always work against progress. But progress comes anyway, the church eventually recognizes that the earth revolves around the sun (after killing off some scientists), civil rights are extended to all citizens (after killing off some citizens), environmental concerns are validated (after killing most of the eagles), and so conservativism is always failing and perpetually looking backward to some idyllic period that never really existed, when we had values and traditions. "Ah, the good old days." Once it was Eisenhower's 50s, now it's Reagan's 80s.
You'll have to excuse the rest of us, we're trying to plan for the future. - EntropyMan, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12I can't tell. Is he trying to be Mr. Wolf, or Bugsy Segal?
- maffick, on 10/11/2007, -2/+9Anyone representing a democracy that is pushing for more secrecy instead of more transparency should not be allowed to represent said democracy. Yes I do realize that we really don't have a truly representative democracy like we pretend we should, but it is an ideal I think we should strive for.
- GettinReal, on 10/11/2007, -4/+11I would like to enter a new term into the English Language...and this is coming from 'Bama....
Redneck Fascist. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6Fortunately those conservatives can just blame it all on these elusive neo cons that just keep popping up, because we all know the real conservatives are just darn great people. /sarc
- floorman56, on 10/11/2007, -6/+11What did Senator Byrd die? ...He is the only KKK member in the Senate
- DavidDigg, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6Guys, Guys, Guys,
You can be a Democracy and an Empire.
You just have to spread lies and doublethink liberally throughout the media.
"A spoonful of sugar makes the medicine go down" -- Mary Poppins - Maninthemiddle, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5To be eloquent, ain't politics grand?
How about the support or opposition to the filibuster that ebbs and flows with control. Or maybe the need for more troops (again, from both sides).
I don't understand how so many folks that seem to be well meaning souls get co-opted/bullied into submission so quickly. - LeanenStreet, on 10/11/2007, -4/+8Wow, a few of the republicans are starting to come around to the dumb ass that is G.W, about time.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -6/+10Look up Ron Paul's infamous "Neo-conned" speech. In the future, Americans will look back and wonder why we didn't listen to Paul, who has been proven correct in almost every single instance. Hopefully, we can repudiate the neoconservative foreign policy (that exists in both parties, mind you) before a war with Iran is provoked.
- br549, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5"Pretty sad that people still listen to a single word he says. His opinion means zero to anyone with half a brain"
Same for "think progress." - Loonacy, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4From the great Wikipedia:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Democracy#.22Democracy.22_and__.22Republic.22
"However, in contemporary usage, the term "democracy" usually refers to a government chosen by the people, whether it is direct or representative." - bupublue, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5Apparently austintexasguy, you failed to notice that there was a video accompanying the article, as well as a transcript. The video was from CNN. You can find it on CNNs website as well. Propoganda indeed. You sound like Bill O'Reilly calling Media Matters a smear site because they make him look bad by showing unedited footage (w/transcript) from his show.
- Maninthemiddle, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4I would think that anyone interested in an improvement of the status quo in Iraq would welcome the fact that it is being discussed - not a lock step. Maliki's government has been a significant impediment on issues such as Sunnis in government, oil revenue distribution, and coddling al Sadr.
I was glad to see pressure applied here - that might then be applied to Maliki.
Finally, as the maninthemiddle, I am not a big Trent Lott fan, however, the demonizing is a bit off the wall. If there are as money college (or soon thereafter) types on Digg as represented, perhaps a bit more debate, and a bit less fallacy would help make the point.
I attempt to view things as to what's best for the nation - and can be persuaded by facts or fact based opinion. I am not as interested in how can I use this to empower "my" guys, or destroy the other guys - which are circular loops. - maffick, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5@healthydose
I don't disagree with you. In fact I think we are one of the most imperialistic republics in the world, all the while we pretend to be a representative democracy. I still like the ideal of democracy better than the exploitation and greed of what we really represent. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -3/+6@killinger777
I think it's appropriate in this case, but feel free to bury me as you see fit. - nicc, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4@floorman56:
quick question. were you this anti-moveon back in the 90s when they are pro Republican/Anti Clinton? - Kallius, on 10/11/2007, -3/+5JERRY: Hey, do you know what the Whip does?
KRAMER: What whip?
JERRY: The Whip. In the Senate, in the House.
KRAMER: Well, you know in the old days, when the senators didn't vote the way that the party leaders wanted 'em to... they whipped them. "You better vote the way we want you to, or there's gonna be big trouble." - Pfhreak, on 10/11/2007, -3/+5Hopefully it's just Neoconservativism and "theoconservativism" (Religious Right) that's dead. There's still:
Libertarianism
Paleoconservativism
Centrist Republicans
States' Rights Republicans
The joys of a de facto two-party system: identifying yourself by party is mostly useless, given the number of internal factions in each party. - ruminate, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Convenience first, always. That should be Lott's middle name.
- Pfhreak, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4@ thcobbs
tinker123 is talking about the Republicans that Lott's telling to shut up. Just because Lott will only be voted out in a "live boy/dead girl" scenario doesn't mean the rest of the Republicans can just slide through the next two years. They have to divorce themselves from the failed Bush administration or they'll likely lose their seats in '08. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4the right right (lott, bush, etc) and the libertarians want to sell us out to the largest corporation. good thing a dem is going to take office finally and put govt back in the people's hands

No. - pongjinn, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3Remember kids, Corporations can do no wrong! The free market can fix every problem!
Any Corporation of sufficient size can be just as dangerous to our liberties as the government. - an0nymous, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Not really.
Number of concerned Republicans who urged Bush to change plan: 11
Number who voted for most recent Iraq bill: 0 - FiatLux88, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1http://www.kickthemallout.com/
Absolute power corrupts absolutely.
Vote the FASCIST OUT!!!!!!!!! - flohoff60, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3OH my God another leak out of Washington DC.......another made for TV propaganda piece
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Republic, federal democracy, etc.... doesn't matter. The united states is a shame that causes the founding fathers great agony if they are aware of whats going on.
- ruminate, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2We have to remember elections are coming and the Republicans are afraid, very afraid.
- zephc, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3There was a dream that was America. You could only whisper it. Anything more than a whisper and it would vanish, it was so fragile.

http://www.ronpaul2008.com - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3Hahahahaha secret conversation would be more valuable? Bushie would just say it never happend and everyone told him to the bitter end it was going well.
Impeach! - bupublue, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3@amalgamutt
Regardless of what Bill O'Reilly might tell you, there is a HUGE difference between US and French conservativism. Starting with the fact that in the US we have a Republican Party in which members may be ideologically conservative (or a Democratic Party in which members may be ideologically conservative too; it happens), but in France it's simply the Conservative Party.
Frankly, I don't see how the French election has a damn thing to do with US politics. It's not like the French elected a Conservative because they're so in love with US Republicans. - healthydose, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1To ManofVirtures: You forgot number 6. Mob rule where 51% of the populace are able to tell the other 49% of the populace what to do. Republics are the absolutely best possible form of Gov. Maximum freedom for the people, the minimum of gov. necessary. The problem, prophetically stated by Benjamin Franklin, is "how to keep it." The Founding Fathers knew what a democracy was and wanted nothing to do with it , hence they gave us a Republic. Army Manuel 1910, no longer used, described democracy as "mob rule". In Western movies where you have a lynch mob stopped by the sheriff in front of the jail is good example of the mob--democracy, stopped by the sheriff--Republic the rule of Common Law. It wasn't until after W.I where democracy came into vogue to describe our Republic. Completly different subject. Even when I put in the captcha letters or numbers in, exactly as they appear, I always get the error message. Only me or anybody else??
- Loonacy, on 10/11/2007, -2/+2Bravo Totorototoro. The joke almost writes itself. Let's just let the Shmaily Shmow handle this one.
- ruminate, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1The second rule would be see rule number one.
- Maninthemiddle, on 10/11/2007, -2/+2Another salient argument. Convinces me. And, like the President, your Ivy league bachelor and masters degrees are from where?
I think the war has, in many cases, been mishandled. Bush has and will bear the brunt of the criticism - as it should be.
Again, fallacy and demonizing are not rational discussion - neither was it when the most rabid Republicans were frothing over Clinton using pejoratives instead of facts. - atb12688, on 10/11/2007, -2/+2I'm not sure i would call Trent Lott a racist. What someone says about someone else at basically a pre-funeral may not necessarily be that person's true views. I think a lot of people mistook his remarks for racism when his real goal was to commend a man that was 100 years old. If a respected member of my fraternity (ie congress) was 100 years old, i think i would say a lot of good about him, even if it wasn't my true views. Either that or he really is a racist but i don't think anyone can say for sure.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -6/+6Saw thinkprogress in the url. It's not even worth my time. I could make my own no-source, extremely biased blog posts if I wanted to.
