- obliviousfool, on 07/13/2008, -7/+36Why do they need money for a library?
Every document that isn't secret from this presidency would fit in a shoebox. - EntropyMan, on 07/13/2008, -4/+28The story isn't just the access -- it's the promise that US foreign policy would support a reviled exiled leader of Krygystan for a measly $250k, the price of a single full page ad or one commercial on national TV (off-peak).
I just can't believe how cheap it is to buy foreign policy these days. Bush will sell his country down the river for a pony. I'm embarrassed. At least demand they name one of the Kyrgystan mountains "George" or something (vowels in that part of the world are very expensive). - bhussobama, on 07/13/2008, -7/+31I can't imagine why mainstream outlets haven't picked up on this, is it because it broke in the UK? This level of corruption is atrocious, literally beyond words.
If the old news media isn't going to report this, then it looks like we're going to have to do the job.
Digg this story. Don't let it rot. This isn't some inane political bloviating of the type that usually shows up on this site; this is actually important--the integrity of the Fourth Estate, which includes us, is imperiled by this lapse. - Cuchanu, on 07/13/2008, -4/+21Let's start a fund and pay them to make Karl Rove testify.
- paul94611, on 07/13/2008, -4/+21Not only does he not read, all of the pertinent records have already been destroyed.
- Carv, on 07/12/2008, -7/+24Who else going to give him money for his library? We all know he doesn't read!
- Rotzooi, on 07/13/2008, -5/+21The Republicans are making America resemble a banana republic. Disgusting.
- Munchcat, on 07/13/2008, -4/+20Under BushCo, the world is merely a playground for carpetbaggers, lunatics and whores.
- kcapxis, on 07/13/2008, -2/+11I've said it before. Taking money from a foreign operative for personal gain while bending foreign policy to suit the will of the foreign operative is the very definition of treason. Hopefully this will be punished accordingly.
- Lancelot9201, on 07/13/2008, -2/+11I wonder if this library is going to have a miniature oil well on display in honor of all the troops that have died in Iraq, over oil.
- wynja, on 07/13/2008, -3/+12Oh yeah, I still recall the fire in Vice-President Cheney's office.
- wynja, on 07/13/2008, -3/+11This is news because a UK news paper got the bribe discussion with the DHS offical on video tape.
- zombie210, on 07/13/2008, -1/+8Next story, sometimes gerrymandering happens in American states.
I would only be surprised if a year went by without a story like this appearing.
Anyone else find it ironic though that this president is getting a library? :) - inactive, on 07/13/2008, -2/+8Lets pool a couple hundred thousand dollars and pick someone to give Bush a piece of our minds.
- wynja, on 07/13/2008, -4/+10It is time for Americans to hold it's rulers accountable for breaking their contract with the citizens of the United States.
Over 200 year ago, the citizens of this great country fought and died for a written contract with it's government that would protect certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. - goes211, on 07/13/2008, -2/+7 I find it ironic that those that those that love government power the most ( modern day liberals and the far left ) are surprised by this. As long as the government can use its force to decide winners and losers, people will lobby for favors.
The left would never consider that the solution to this could be "remove power from government bureaucrats". Of course not! They love it when this power is directed at their pet projects like public education and CO2 regulation. The only problem is that their guys are not always the ones doling out the treasure. - obliviousfool, on 07/13/2008, -3/+8They probably need to schedule a few more of those.
- inactive, on 07/13/2008, -4/+7So what?
It will be news when anyone in power in the USA acts to stop the extreme right's plundering of our government. The world press has exposed war crimes, torture, bribery and lies by the US government over and over again. It's not news that these things are happening. "News" would occur when there is an attempt, ANY attempt, to prosecute the criminals in the government. - novenator, on 07/14/2008, -0/+3dont worry, all the good books in the bush library will be burned
- InetRoadkill, on 07/13/2008, -2/+5Why isn't this bribery? And how much does it cost to house a couple of dozen coloring books?
- awills, on 07/13/2008, -2/+5Just read the full article:
http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/world/us_and ...
The details near the end of what the money will buy in positive comments from the administration are crazy. - dinostabOMG, on 07/13/2008, -2/+5Seriously, how many copies of My Pet Goat do you need?
- Blankcheque, on 07/13/2008, -2/+4It's more like....
"I can arrange a sit down with the don. Sure. But I need a finders fee for arranging this sit down. And setting up a face to face, that's mutually beneficial to both me and my associate."
Selling favors and bribes IS illegal.
But nothings going to happen, just another ass hole politician who flaunts his power above the American people. We're already powerless. - kemojr, on 07/13/2008, -0/+2I voted for Ron Paul in the Republican primary because he is not your run of the mill power/money grubbing politician. He seems to have some regard for rule based on the Constitution. I think all politicians and judges should be forced to memorize the Constitution verbatim and have to repeat it on national television every year. If they can't repeat it word for word they should be replaced with at least someone who can.
- thebaron2, on 07/13/2008, -0/+2This isn't just about the right - it's an example of how politics in general works around here, and it's disgusting. To try and focus it on only one party is doing a disservice to politics in general.
If you listen to the video, the US lobbyist mentions getting Joe Biden and other democrats (none mentioned by name except for Joe) to release "positive statements" about the former president. Those statements would be in addition to something positive out of Rice and other administration officials.
This crosses party lines, don't be naive about that. The whole lobby system and buying of politics in general is a shame. - dOOBiEx213, on 07/13/2008, -2/+4He might not read, but we know he ***** all over the constitution, which is why they want to name a Sewage plant after him:
http://www.latimes.com/news/local/politics/cal/la- ... - Midtowner, on 07/14/2008, -0/+1All of the above. It goes on even in my state's government. This sort of conduct is ubiquitous throughout the American government. If you don't think that big money buys access, you're naive as heck. Access can be bought just as easily from Republicans as Democrats It takes a hell of a lot of grease to keep those wheels turning.
- tajitj, on 07/13/2008, -4/+5Enough. I am voting for Bob Barr. To much power and corruption in Washington.
http://www.barrhq.com/ - malex, on 07/14/2008, -0/+1Do you mean raising money, or exchanging private access with the President and key officials for money?
I'm not saying you're wrong, I just want to be clear on what we're talking about. - novenator, on 07/14/2008, -1/+2the far left loves big government? check your beer, I think its been dosed.
- barfooz, on 07/13/2008, -4/+5People are far too idealistic about politics. When a politician amasses a certain degree of power, and is not removed from office, his primary goal usually becomes perpetuating that power. The same is true for a political party in general. Power breeds laziness, a sense of invincibility, and corruption. Whenever the Democrats have been in power for long stretches of time, the same thing has occurred.
Government and politics, when conducted on the large scale of the nation state, are inherently ugly, slimy and corrupt things. Get used to it. Or vote third party. - dupswapdrop, on 07/14/2008, -0/+1Only books with a picture of a goat in them will be in the Bush library. Maybe he can have a read along with the chimp day at his library.
- partrow, on 07/13/2008, -4/+5If the person did something illegal, charge him or her. Like they did with Bubba. The only problem there is that he got off after lying to a Grand Jury. But seriously, if someone breaks the law, charge them with a crime, or quit bellyaching. The law is the law. Bring em to justice.
- Waiting2awake, on 07/13/2008, -1/+2Will you agree though that Ron Paul is an exception within the Republican party?
- goes211, on 07/13/2008, -1/+2Agreed. The neocons and the far left are flip side of the same coin. Both are hostile to liberty and see no problem using force to push their agenda. Unfortunately most people don't understand this or at least they don't care as long as it is their priorities that are pushed onto everyone else.
- BlacklabelSAR, on 07/13/2008, -1/+2"God Bless America"
*Gets Visa/Canadian Immigration documents together - Midtowner, on 07/14/2008, -0/+1This is what Presidents do during their last year in office. You don't recall Clinton using the Lincoln bedroom as a fundraiser or taking similar sorts of donations for his library?
It's *****, but it's par for the course. If Obama is elected, he'll be doing the same thing during his last year in office. - thcobbs, on 07/13/2008, -3/+3"This level of corruption is atrocious,"
You mean... "If you donate money to this guy's library... you can meet him" is corruption? - inactive, on 07/14/2008, -3/+3You're being Dugg down by liberal wackos who think that Republicans are always evil and Democrats can do no wrong. It's sad...but that's the way that Huffington Post and Thinkprogress supporters think.

It's on the front page already. In fact, BOTH are on my screen at the same time. Fail. - twiztidsinz, on 07/13/2008, -3/+3It's doubly important.
- bjornski, on 07/13/2008, -3/+3I don't find it ironic that those that those that love government power the most ( modern day neo-conservatives and the far right ) are defending this. As long as the government can use its force to decide winners and losers, people will lobby for favors.
The right would never consider that the solution to this could be "remove power from corrupt government bureaucrats". Of course not! They love it when this power is directed at their pet projects like gutting public education and CO2 regulations. The only problem is that their guys are not always the ones doling out the treasure.
/fixed that for you. - bjornski, on 07/13/2008, -2/+2Gee, you're right.
I guess these guys are paying for the access just for the autograph and photo. - AddiX, on 07/13/2008, -2/+2holy *****, they are going to build a library to commemorate bush's presidency?
- RocketGib, on 07/13/2008, -1/+1No Child Left Behind... in my library, please! -Bush
- Serphyas, on 07/13/2008, -3/+2This article was posted earlier than the 1000+ diggs topic.
- inactive, on 07/13/2008, -9/+8Yeah. The American extreme right wing is blatantly corrupt.
Isn't news supposed to be... I don't know... new? - barfooz, on 07/13/2008, -9/+8Hah, and you think Democratic politicians are immune to pandering and corruption? Read up on how Kennedy got elected.
This is par for the course. No surprises, politics as usual. - toastgodsupreme, on 07/13/2008, -2/+1Yet the other one made it to the front page first. It wins.
