That is why I don't get these car bombs. They lack sophistication and are completely ineffective. If a dedicated group of people really wanted to bring down the US economy, they could, very easily. Or at least bring a major American city to its knees. Thus, I am quite alarmed that a few crude car bombs in Scotland would cause Lieberman to call for cameras in major cities. If he is generally calling for the abandonment of the Constitution over can only be considered trivial "tactics" then I would hate to see him if something major happened.
More people in the United States die from racial violence than terrorism and the Government could really care less (see black on black violence in certain states). The removal of civil liberties and invasive surveillance of citizens by governments in democratic states makes us less free and I would argue plays into what terrorists want in the first place. Very bad acts by democratic governments in other states in the name of terrorism has very clearly made citizens of those states much less safe. Right wing policy has been carried out over the last so many years in the US and UK is clearly showing itself to be worse than a miserable failure. Lieberman is an idiot and someone should follow him around with a camera.

The difference is that government is not placing nor controlling the cameras. And, Lieberman is reacting to one event while, in your scenario, it seems that the bombings are pandemic.
Yes, if we woke up tomorrow and every major city in the United States was hit by suicide bombers causing massive damage, then, yes, more enforcement may be needed. As I said, I find nearly all of these attacks and plots to be somewhat suspect; the "terrorists" to me appear uneducated and underfunded.
I understand your point. But, I can assure you that Homeland Security rhetoric holds no way over me. My point is that if people REALLY wanted to bring down the US economy and/or hurt an American city, they would have. The 9/11 hijackers could have hit the NYSE instead (yes, tricky flying) or any of the major-backup power grids in the country. Or one of the buildings housing the Internet's network backbone. Or one of the major credit buildings (ala Fight Club). All of those would have substantially more impact than hitting the Pentagon or WTC.
That's the problem. We're supposed to be in a "War" but I find the targets of the people we are "fighting" against to be completely counter-intuitive. Why waste considerable resources attempting to damage a bridge when you can expend the same resources (and with a higher success rate) blowing up an unguarded power plant?
I mean, I remember when a terrorist was supposed to have targeted the Space Needle in Seattle. Why? Did they not like the overpriced and mediocre food at the top restaurant? It's a wasted target. It makes no sense. It makes me feel that, if we are fighting "terrorists" that are intent on "destroying America," they are pretty dumb. Really dumb. Really really really dumb
