- jgoodstein, on 10/10/2007, -0/+24I'm watching, watching 503 and 404 and proxy errors. CONGRESSMAN vote No on 404 !!!
- cankillar, on 10/10/2007, -1/+13Contrary to popular opinion, putting "lol" in your post a few times when nothing is funny does NOT enhance it.
lol - zephc, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10Hmm just like real congress, it seems opencongress has come to a standstill.
- thespiff, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6So congress only knows what my opinions on bills are if they look at this widget on my Blog? Cool, so it accomplishes nothing.
- LastVisibleDog, on 10/10/2007, -3/+7Seems some people have problems understanding how a republic (representative government) works.
While this is a good tool for the user (not congress) to keep up with legislature - this country is not a democracy. - gotamd, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4If you're interested in this, you may also be interested in DownsizeDC: www.downsizedc.org It's been around for a few years and does some great work. It's also very easy to use.
- neelb420, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5As someone who isn't confused on how a republic works I can say that, knowing what representatives voted for and introduced certain bills is the key ingredient in making intelligent voting decisions regarding the people who are representing our districts. As the people can vote and we arent in a dictatorship, it's important to keep track of this stuff off/on if you want to be a good citizen and make good voting decisions.
- metalgodz, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Dugg you down, but explaining why...
The site doesn't so much reek of Libertarianism as it does anti-buracracy-ism. The goal of stripping unneeded buracracy is shared by both Libertarians and the guys running Downsize DC, and it doesn't automatically make Downsize DC a Libertarian site. - Terr01, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5I can't vote on inititative 403. Forbidden? Am I a felon now?
- buckybadger9876, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3if we watch them maybe they'll have spines like ron paul :-)
- norman619, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2The next step in this master plan is to get congress to give a *****.
- norman619, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I think it's sad that we can't simply go on-line and check up on our reps. See how much pork they have added to bills vote history and so on. They really don't want us to actually KNOW what these clowns are doing there. Watch them real-time while in session and so on. Nothing they do should be out of the people's ability to see and scrutinize.
- laughlinbarker, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2is it just me, or did opencongres just get dugg? I can read the homepage, but none of the others load!
- BigDelite, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I don't watch Congress as long as they promise not to watch me.
- metalgodz, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1As did I. With a few qualifications, the statement is pretty much true.
If you're digging something solely because it's anti-Bush or anti-Republican, you're not helping. If you're doing it because you've read it, understand it, and want attention brought to it, that's another story. If you can actually add intelligent debate, even better.
Now watch this get dugg down just like my comments encouraging people to actually get out and do something to affect change other than post on Digg. ;) - danthemansmith, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I don't think they will give a crap, but maybe it will get under their lizard skin for a while.
- GabrielS, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Are you affiliated with OpenCongress, the Sunlight Foundation, or the Participatory Politics Foundation?
- tidu, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1you ass, i spent all yesterday brainstorming ideas for a social debate type website. but I'm no web programmer either. what a shame.
- sunlightlabs, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1GabrielS:
http://www.sunlightfoundation.com/node/2539 - LastVisibleDog, on 10/10/2007, -2/+3...did not realize congress was voting on a proxy error today
- SilentJay74, on 10/10/2007, -2/+3The rupert murdoch CAPTCHA is great.
- gotamd, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Well, the guys running DownsizeDC are what I would consider libertarians. That doesn't mean, however, that the site is only for libertarians. I would think that mandating the lawmakers read any bill before voting on it would be a reform that almost *anyone* would want to see passed. Another nice thing about DownsizeDC is that you can /choose/ what issues to respond to. If you don't agree with them on some things, just don't participate. I don't participate in everything they have going on, be it out of laziness or apathy.
- Terr01, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Whenever I go to /setvote?id=4 it keeps giving me a 301 to /setvote?id=2
What gives? - GabrielS, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1background info
http://www.sfbg.com/entry.php?entry_id=4454&catid=4&volume_id=254&issue_id=313&volume_num=41&issue_num=49 - Shawn4168, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Seems like they just passed issue 502.
- neelb420, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1http://www.govtrack.us/about.xpd
"This site was created by and is maintained by Joshua Tauberer. I'm a graduate student studying linguistics (yes, neither politics nor computer science) at the University of Pennsylvania. GovTrack isn't affiliated with the government or any other group. It's just a pet project of mine. To send me a note, email me at the address shown at the bottom of this page. Please don't email me to contact your Member of Congress or to do research for you, though!" - GabrielS, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Do you guys realize who funds the Sunlight Foundation?
In 5 minutes I have already linked Sunlight to Blum Capital Partners(Iraq war profiteers) through funding and staff members.
This may be a good tool, but the underlying issue of social networks serving the needs of war profiteers isn't worth it. - xtmno3, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Where people get mad is when the people they elect say A but do B when they get elected. If the elected officials stuck to what they stated when they were running for office we would have a lot fewer complaints.
However, using this won't really accomplish much, if anything. - Satanael, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1OpenCongress is by far one of the greatest things to come out of the web. Bury me for being an over-hyped fanboy, but this really makes watching the government so much easier for those that truly wish to feel involved.
- punkrock4life, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1if it doesnt run on dashboard, i dont care if its a widget.
- MerryMortician, on 10/10/2007, -2/+3I'm so glad this is finally here! I'm sure all the congressfolk are watching this closely to determine how they should vote! (maybe it would be more effective if we write our opinions on the walls of the stalls of mens rooms or post on kiddie pr0n sites.)
- DiggsOnlyJew, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0This information will be overlooked just as thousands of e-mails, snail mails, phone calls, and personal visits are.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0So I guess this is like those online petitions, basically useless.
- Ebacherville, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1doubt this will work.. do you really think they care what we think.. they shure have not stopped the war that 70% of the country is against.. why would this work
- Forklore, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1and you got dugg down by someone for saying that...typical...I dug your comment
- Erixxxxx, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Since congressman already completely ignore their employers we constituents, in the absence of a law requiring congressman to vote the way they are instructed to by said employers, I fail to see why anyone would think congressman would give a ***** about this.
- bib4tuna, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1thisll do a whole hell of a lot
replace widget with machine gun and opencongress with grenade and we might get somewhere - neelb420, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0The more people have this widget the more aware officials are that they are being watched and the more they will hear from the people who voted for them when they disagree with there actions. I think this is a very important tool and Digg.com is displaying some shallow apathy on this issue at the moment.
- schul155, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Can we have our congresspeople also use this? so they know what they are saying yes and no too? you know like actually reading what they sign off on? just a thought
- neelb420, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0http://www.govtrack.us
- gusflaubert, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0More at :: http://www.opencongress.org/tools
- adrianmonk, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0This was dugg down for what reason? Because it's NOT important to stay aware of what your congressional representative is doing so you know whether to vote for their re-election if/when the time comes?
- LvsSocer, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0While true, congressmen tend to listen up if they start receiving calls from their constituents. Keeping up with bills only makes sense if you voice your opinions about bad bills to your local congressman.
- FortyCaliber, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1The Voting machine software must have been ported to their servers.
- debutstudios, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0These sound great but can't get into site...anyone have a mirror?
- Knabber, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Crazy, I just started building a prototype 3 days ago using pligg on a similar concept for political issue tracking...
- neelb420, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Just correcting my statement when I said "who the majority of people voted for" I meant to add (most of the time) :P
And to reply to xtmno3's post and the others surrounding it, if you believe "ignorance is power" well, more power to you! I'm not a politician, used car salesman, neither a philosopher so I am not going to waste my time trying to sell belief to nihilists. - adrianmonk, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Sending a letter to your congressperson might not influence their behavior, but it's a surefire way to figure out whether you like what your congressperson is doing. They'll almost always send you a letter back, and it'll basically either say "thanks for suggesting X; I support X and was already going to do that" or it will say "thanks for suggesting X; while your opinion is important, I'm going to do the exact opposite of what you want because of Y".
You can tell a lot from which type of response you receive, and you can also tell a lot from the way they word Y (their justification).
This makes it much easier to figure out how to vote next time. You just send letters whenever an issue is important to you, and it becomes easy to keep track of whether your congressperson is representing your views or not. - neelb420, on 10/10/2007, -1/+0Personally I don't quite understand how anyone could see this as unimportant, I guess it's just as I don't understand how people can riot in the streets of Washington when they didn't vote for the people who are currently representing us. Yes, we know you're pissed, I don't like alot of the idiots either, but it is who the majority of people voted for so just sit back, shutup and wait for the next round of voting. This is a republic. Not a democracy, not anarchy, it's a republic. Deal with it.
- Faierie, on 10/10/2007, -5/+4I love OpenCongress tools! Can't wait to use this one!
