- spearce, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17it's a shame we need a law enacted by one law maker on other law makers about being unethical.
- aliengoods, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14You call 5.7% a drop in the ocean! WTF constitutes a deluge?
- Tripw0l, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13Too little too late, this should have been done at least 3 years ago.
- PopcornDave, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10No it should have been done about 100 years ago. Corruption isn't anything new, as much as some would like to believe. I'm sure you could go back to the Spanish American war and find corruption and profiteering even back then. It's not like Bush & co. have an exclusivity on it.
- migbike, on 10/12/2007, -10/+17As long as our country is filled with close minded religious zealots, the GOP will have a strong foundation regardless of how corrupt or incompetent they are.
- Corrosionx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Sure, trust the government to prosecute itself. I'll LOL
- nick111, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8I don't think this is a Republican problem specifically.
The problem is with corporations controlling campaign finance. Get rid of that - get publicly funded election campaigns, then a lot of these problems will evaporate. - listrophy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7I've been woefully unimpressed by American politicians for quite some time, now... on both sides of the aisle. Let me explain with an analogy.
This bill : politicians :: "rumble" feature : PS3
In both cases, I say "wow. congratulations. You suck just a little bit less now." Unfortunately for me, I'm stuck with the politicians, whereas I don't have to buy a PS3. - daedalus779, on 10/12/2007, -5/+10good ole pat leahy! glad i voted for him.
- NetCaptive, on 02/18/2009, -4/+8Ditto, he's a great Vermonter :-)
- creoderiot, on 10/12/2007, -5/+9@kylesellers - why is this a waste of time? can you explain this opinion - or is your comment just political posturing?
- Leomarth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Corruption won't end until the government no longer has the power to pass out favors. If you want corruption to end, limit the power of government. If you don't want to do both, quit whining.
- catchphrase, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4In 1986, Patrick Leahy had to resign from the intelligence committee because he leaked confidential information to a reporter. Leahy and Russ Feingold fight against national security in every way they can. They are two of the dumbest Democrats in Congress and that is saying a lot.
Catch - Takfam, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4The upside being that Bush CAN'T veto it without completely destroying his credibility. Here's a bill to stop corruption. If (and that's one big "if") it makes it to his desk and he says "No, we can't pass that." that's akin to admitting that he's in on the corruption since he has no desire to stop it.
Then again, its not like credibility is something high on the White House list of priorities. - iloveliberals, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Ah, Democrats, champions of fiscal responsibility and virtue.
- hoyaman, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Remember how every Republican analyst has been baffled by the Democratic takeover of Congress?
"But, we had a strong economy!"
Strong economy in time of war = some pretty damn rich War Profiteers.
Let's all go back and read Truman's thoughts and Eisenhower's regarding World War II and corporate militarist profits. - appetite, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3@citrxdefp
It may not be an exclusively Republican problem, but it sure is far more and far worse of a problem for them. If you doubt that, then YOU don't really have a clue. - PATSCRU, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7there was a republican controlled house and senate 3 years ago, but i'm glad we have the chance to push some reform now.
- cquinnd, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3And how long did it take to build that debt ceiling in comparison?
- spyd3rweb, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3@creoderiot
because most likely the bill is just for show, and will not actually stop any corruption. - cswnow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Hopefully this will catch the corrupt Tyson Foods and Loral Corp during the Clinton Reign Of Terror.
- LosingTheFight, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5@migbike: I am religious (a Pastor in training) and a democrat. Please refrain from over generalizations and relating religion to corruption as the two are not always related. Thanks.
Related to the story, it's about time someone pushed some serious anti-corruption and accountability measures. I can't help but be pessimistic that it won't go very far though... - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Careful what you wish for, sir. Someone may get the wrong ideas and think about investigating peacemongering profiteers. You know all the clique from Chomsky to Soros and you know all those loudmouthed "free free palestine" folks. Oh boy... Heads will roll.
- BenDrincoln, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Leahy FTW
- Leomarth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Why punish the offspring?
- Tweekster, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4popcorndave:
Yes they do, everything was perfect before bush came into office. Corruption did not exist, everyone was working together, it was ice cream and rainbows damnit.
Dont believe otherwise, bush RUINED EVERYTHING. - Tweekster, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Too bad it wont ever even make it to the president.
This is a bill designed to make it look like they are doing something, it is expected from birth to die in committee.
I find it funny that people believe these are genuine attempts at change - Wacer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2@nick111
Had to post just to give you another +1. I agree, by the time somebody gets into office, they owe so many favors to so many groups, companies, lobbyist that they are corrupted the first day they start office. It is one of the largest contributing factors to why the people in this country can't vote in an honest politician be it Democrat or Republican. - Wacer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Everybody should help this women get the gag order removed so she can speak about the crooked politicians. The most gag ordered person in America.
The state department even gag ordered congress. It must be some huge cover up.

Thank you for brightening up an otherwise ***** day! I needed the laugh. - Wacer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I agree, deep down it doesn't matter what political party they come from, they still cover each others butts. If the real scandels got out, most of them would be hung out dry or but behind bars.
- cowabuse, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2If you implement Capitalism, these are the fruits of your harvest. The profits are what defines morality.
- LukeSkope, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I moved to SF from Vermont in 2005, but I have so much love for the Green Mountain state, and I am happy that my home state is represented by the likes of Leahy and Bernie. Especially Bernie.
- fsjonsey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Hmm, I wonder if this applies to all the pork the democrats are sending back to their districts?
- nwatkins, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Tell this to the Democrats in the House. They included $25 billion of pork in the latest Iraq Appropriations bill in what can only be described as bribes for votes. This should be considered war profiteering.
- bufmike, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Maybe the could put Diane Feinstein in charge since she resigned from MILCOM due to corruption??
- implante, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1it's good to be in the green mountains :)
- kristov, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Wow you know how the Republicans are going to vote.
- tled, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0will this prick regulate himself.
- Leomarth, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1@takfam
He can if he cites "NATIONAL SECURITY". Anything passes under that cloak. - Fingertips, on 10/12/2007, -5/+5Senator Leahy is a great senator
- cowabuse, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1So this is why Haliburton is moving it's head quarters to Dubai.
- spurtle, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Then they would've been riduculed, saying that nothing like this would ever happen.
- citrixxps, on 10/12/2007, -10/+9" I hope America learns from this so another Republican government will not be put into power for a long, long time"
Yeah, and there has never been a corrupt Democrat. You really don't have a clue, do you? - SmartITGuy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Ten bucks says - Bush, Cheney and the rest of the pigs-at-the-trough republicans will not let this pass....
- rmwest2001, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0takfam,
It doesn't matter what Bush does; he has no credibility at all. - JoshCBFL, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1In theory, this is a good idea. The only bad thing is that Pres Bush has the authority to veto it before it even has a chance.
- thomn8r, on 10/12/2007, -6/+2All HAL shareholders (who've made quite a bundle from IraqNam) should be required to either serve in Iraq themselves or enlist one of their offspring.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -9/+4More libtards throwing up roadblocks to the war on terror. You guys are just pissed that Bush stands in the way of your rabid gay agenda.
Libtards persecuted Jesus, too. God Bless George W. Bush! - kylesellers, on 10/12/2007, -15/+8These bills are nothing more than political posturing. This is a waste of time by Leahy.
