- xtmno3, on 10/12/2007, -5/+44[sarcasm] Well, we are in a perpetual time of war aren't we? Doesn't that give the president omnipotent powers? [/sarcasm]
Think of it like a special powerup. - ArchieAndrews, on 10/12/2007, -2/+39If he picks up the quad, we're all screwed.
- noodlez, on 10/12/2007, -4/+41can anyone give me an example of how this could possibly be used to do anything EXCEPT to bypass our country's laws?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+24Checks and Balances - is that what we were taught in the 5th grade about our government?
- rushiku, on 10/12/2007, -5/+26digg for King George usage
- itistoday, on 10/12/2007, -3/+23Anyone else think that "King George" would be a powerful slogan for the Democratic party to use?
- amoirae, on 10/12/2007, -3/+22Neocons have called Hillary power hungry.
What is George? Power bulemic?
Binge in private, purge at a press conference, wash, rinse, repeat. - felchdonkey, on 10/12/2007, -1/+20King George (Bush): http://www.voltairenet.org/IMG/jpg/es-George_II_The_King-.jpg
- neoform, on 10/12/2007, -3/+21Anyone who has yet to read the book Nineteen Eighty Four.. nows the time, this way you'll at least know what you're going to be seeing take place in ten years..
- CrimsonBlur, on 10/12/2007, -6/+22***** Bush. ***** his entire cabinet. ***** every single plitician currently working in D.C. and ***** the Republicans especially, they have really screwed this country up badly! I'm not saying there aren't corrupt Democrats as well, but come on people! This ***** is getting out of hand, and it's occured on the Republican's watch.
I don't normally use curse words in my 'serious' posts but man, I just couldn't help myself. If I get modded down, fine, I'd just like to see how many others are as fed up as I am with this *****. Thank GOD my brother is going into politics. Hopefully he and his associates can clean up house in a decade or so. There are some very bright and determined young politicians in the pipes, and knowing many of them, I know that at least they will uphold the values we hold dear as Americans. Not just as Americans, but as reasonable human beings. Not like the ***** in power right now. - arcangelgabriel, on 10/12/2007, -5/+18Elected?
- Tawni, on 10/12/2007, -4/+16He will not leave office in '08. He will alter the constitution or just declare it null and void .
Coup!!!! - Arcotik, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13"Until they become conscious they will never rebel, and until after they they have rebelled they cannot become conscious." - 1984
Enough said. - strangerzero, on 10/12/2007, -5/+16He was (s)elected in 2000 and the 2004 election was stolen. He was not legitimitly elected by the American people.
- Rsulliv1, on 10/12/2007, -4/+14The less the public knows about the actual ongoings of terrorists and our country's attempts to thwart them, the safer we'll all be.
Ignorance is bliss.
j/k - taffyguy, on 10/12/2007, -5/+14but... but... god wanted him to be president!
- Cavorticus, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11Revolt! We need a revolt!
- AgentEntropy, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12@ Rsulliv1
No, you've got it wrong. It's "Ignorance Is Power". - Joe_rigby, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11This power is not granted in the constitution, and I think it's an impeachable abuse of power - question is, when will someone in power grow some balls and challenge him?
Please, get out and vote. - guine, on 10/12/2007, -5/+12If I remember right there was a court case in 2000 and exit polls that didnt line up anywhere near the the outcome in Ohio. I guess that may be what elections are in newspeak.
- JEWigs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7...from lp.org - official LIBERTARIAN website..."Libertarians believe the answer to America's political problems is the same commitment to freedom that earned America its greatness: a free-market economy and the abundance and prosperity it brings; a dedication to civil liberties and personal freedom that marks this country above all others; and a foreign policy of non-intervention, peace, and free trade as prescribed by America's founders."
Yeah. That's GW in a nutshell. Free market economy? Arguable. Certainly not for small business. Civil liberties and personal freedom? What a joke! And don't even get me started on the foreign policy bit. If you're a Libertarian, then why are you defending Bush? - drphred, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10He would just veto it or add a signing statement....
- jellygraph, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Again, GW Bush editing reality so it suits his the best.
To him the world is his own wikipedia, where only he has the rights to edit facts. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9@Agent
I believe it's "Ignorance is Strength" i only know b/c the audio book is on my ipod and i randomly hear chapters thorugh out listen to music (on purpose) b/c i love that freaking book.
(1984 for those who don't know) - GoodBrain, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Checks and Balances are the problem. As long as we have checks and balances, we will never be safe from the terrorists.
Fascism will make us safe, our children strong, our women beautiful and our men rich and virile. - dclowd9901, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11Oh, naive fellow American. Were you taught that the constitution and its brother, Bill of Rights were rock-solid foundations of our nation? For our current administration, it will help you "assimilate" better into the Bush way of thinking by considering these archaic, nigh prehistoric principles of democracy as more "clay" than "stone."
- gab00n, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Signing statements basically turn this president into a dictator so why don't we just declare the US a dictatorship already so America will wake up to what is going on?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10Someone should draw up a list of grievances against such a tyrant, detailing why we wish to separate from his rule, and THEN we should draw up some sort of...articles..no..constitution outlining our new form of government! Wait...
- AgentEntropy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7@Molly
You're absolutely right. I can't believe I forgot. - Yez70, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9Didn't you know?
All federally funded schools will now be required to use the 'edited' history books for the remainder of King George's lifetime term. - absentmindedjwc, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10allthough the title might sound like opinion, read the article...
It is political news, and not a story from some "***** blog" but from AP. Just because it doesnt say what Hipnerd said word for word.. that is the objective.
People like you that follow blindely make me sick, open your eyes at what is going on around you, it is bigger than democrat and republican.. there is a criminal in the white house that is using loopholes for his own personal gain, if you are an american citizen and believe in democracy, read articles like this with an open mind, because even though it may sound like opinion, it is factual... - zachblume, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Does this sound very 1984-ish to anyone? The person who gets to delay the privacy report is called the "Privacy Officer".
Homeland Security: The New Fatherland Security. - Cl1mh4224rd, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7"Checks and Balances - is that what we were taught in the 5th grade about our government?"
Seems more and more often that "checks and balances" only refers to banking institutions... :-/ - MrBlackthorne, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8In a Bush presidency, checks and balances are apparently obsolete.
- strangerzero, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9Are we sure that he will leave office in 2008? Who would stop him if he didn't leave?
- 5blocksfree, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9@ruller - pure conjecture.
- neoform, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9I've been calling him that for years now, shame more people don't use it more.. that's really how he sees himself. everyone's an idiot but him, which is why we have to stop questioning his sneaky moves and just accept that he's doing what's best for us..!
- bigturns, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6@p0s3r
I was there. Slow down on being so righteous chief. - DiggCommando, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6The power grab in '08 will not be by terrorist attack, that is what everyone would expect. What will it be? Nulled elections brought to you by Diebold? Who knows...
- Cl1mh4224rd, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8"Are we sure that he will leave office in 2008? Who would stop him if he didn't leave?"
The soon-to-be Democrat-run Congress...
Bush'll leave without a fuss. I have no doubts about that. Despite this article, his power *is* "waning". People in the government are getting fed up with him. - Cavorticus, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8KG (pronounced cagey) has already stated that the Constitution is only a god damned piece of paper.
- 5blocksfree, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7The last two paragraphs in the article sum things up quite nicely - Dub is using all these means of circumvention to both cover, and expand the influence of, his own incompetence. The whole FEMA mess is all one needs to consider.
I am not sure if the president has constitutional authority to issue signing statements, but if it's not a constitutional matter, they should be outlawed. Though the initial intent may had have some reason behind it, it is currently being abused in a way that subverts the entire democratic process. - JEWigs, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Why make that sort of commitment if they don't have to? Odds are they'll do their best to steal this election and the one after and the one after.
Digg me down, republican morons. You won't be able to hide the truth forever. - nalf38, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6"Diggerals"
what are you, a Redigglican? - bryanedds, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4There is a very, VERY small fringe of psuedo-libertarians that defend Bush because they were duped into voting for him due to his initial free-market rhetoric (which all turned out to be bluster, naturally). These people who absurdly call themselves libertarians cannot admit that they were duped, and have and will continue to defend Boy George until their very deaths, no matter how anti-libertarian Boy George's acts are. They would choose death before admitting to being duped.
***** pseudo-libertarians... They make REAL libertarians look bad by refusing to do the principled thing and disassociate themselves from us. This is because they actually have no principles and we can't find a way to get rid of them. But by God we're working on it! - megaloid, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7The protest was on a Thursday, yes? If they were serious about maximizing turnout, then they should have scheduled it for a Saturday. Just being pragmatic here.
- pabloD, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I've been saying this for years. Either KG (I like that) or his posse will make the power grab, and there's already a precedent of sorts: anybody remeber how Giulliani 'extended' his term in office after 9/11?
I predict that there will be a big ol' terrorist attack on US soil right around, oh, I dunno..... october '08? - jewcantdenyit, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6bush will leave in 08, because he is not the only one who wants the power of the presidency, id be hard pressed to see even his fellow republicans let him stay.
- hipnerd, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Oh, and a guy who only has seven diggs for the seven stories he submitted (including three links to his own lame MySpace blog) does not get to lecture me about how I'm ruining Digg.
- CrimsonBlur, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7OK, here is what some of you are not understanding about this practice. What Bush is doing is technically within his power and has been done before. The problem is, he's used these signing statements WAY more than any other president in history. In fact, he's used it more than all of the other presidents in history COMBINED.
He is twisting the use of these statements from their intended purpose. What he is doing is using these statements to effectively rewrite the language of the bill, excluding the executive branch or the military or intelligence, etc. from having to comply with our laws or disclose information about their actions. -
