- edzieba, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Important point: Kim Jong-il is ***** INSANE. Even if there is a way out of complete embargo or invasion at the expense of having no nuclear weapons he will not take it, even if it is in his 'best interest'. What's more, you can bet the the tested weapon will not be the only weapon, and that the delay between announcing the test and actually testing it will be due to manufacture of more devices. The biggest hope I have is that they've tried to go for too ambitious a design and that the test will fail, but that's unlikely (anyone with a rudimentary knowledge of physics and the internet could create a nuclear device given the needed highly-enriched Uranium/Plutonium).
If they have nuclear weapons, and those weapons work, he will not hesitate to use them if they are invaded, even if they're only used inside of NK borders. - tizz66, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Apparently it is likely the bomb test will happen this weekend - and, also, Southern and Northern troops have been shooting at each other: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/asia-pacific/5415304.stm
- scairborn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Hell! I'm stationed in S. Korea 40 miles from the border tell me I have a prayer! At least you guys will get a full 20 minutes. Not this guy!
- there, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3No food or industry to speak of....... but he needs to develop nukes?
What's really sad is that he must know how much better mixed economies work than communism but he's so possessed by securing his power... he'd rather allow his people to suffer.
I f~cking hate extremists. They cause so much unnecessary suffering in this world. - cpuenvy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I partially disagree. A leader should not be too concerned with pols and such, but we are already engaged in the preliminary stages of WW3. It is only a matter of time.
While FDR was prepping the nation for WWII, he knew Congress would not let him get into the battle, so he twisted the truth and started an arms buildup, as well as sending support to Britian against the better wishes of the people. He also was performing surveillence against known Nazi's. He, as a leader, recognized the fact that although the people did not wish to be in the war (who does?), it was a necessary step in securing our local interests here at home. Interesting similarities.
The point is if we do not act on this nut, or the one in Iran, when the time comes and we do react, I pray it is not too late. History is again repeating itself. - dustyshadow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"*Insert Team America quote here*"
"...are you going to fight or just stand there like a pussy?" - SirFoxx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2He's not insane, just very, very rhonley.
- cpuenvy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3The big problem right now is everyone is freaking out over us being in Iraq. Our government would hesitate to stop this facade because of the criticism that would surely ensue. Hesitation would mean bigger problems. This is a very bad time. Maybe some of you don't know that this loon has missiles that may be able to reach the US?
Satisfied? - wurzelgummage, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I'm not sure Bush and co are too worried about criticism as such. More likely they know they can't really fix the NK problem without using tactical nukes, which would probably put us all in danger of WW3 with the Chinese and possibly Russia.
Rock and a hard place? - sanman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Kim Jong-ILL and his magical mushrooms (mushroom-clouds, that is)
- gregcotten, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2@wurzelgummage
Umm..... Russia? What kind of power could Russia harness to fight a war? - TheEditor1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Great, the Korean version of Porky Pig is at it again.

- wilf_brim, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Yea, but even if he gets the nuke, he still be so ronrey.
- 15charmaxwtf, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1*****, YEAH!
- Mu99ins, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0All politicians twist the truth. Your mom and dad twisted the truth.
If you talk to the service representative at Toyata-Honda-Ford-GM,
and then talk to the auto mechanic, you'll get 2 different versions.
Who is telling the truth? Kim Jong-il may not start a war, but he has
nuclear hardware for sale to anyone with the money, including the likes
of terrorists. He was in the process of selling ballistic missiles to
Saddam Hussein before the invasion.
But, you are correct: we are in a short preparation period before this
world terrorist war gets hot. No one knows how looney Kim Jong-Il is,
and that's for the world to wait and see (the U.N. won't do anything in
the meantime).
Most probably war will break out with Iran, instead. My prediction is
that Israel will bomb Iran, next year, and Iran will immediately declare war
on the U.S., and disrupt shipping in the Persian Gulf,
...as well as attack oil production facilities in the region
....and step up funding and arming of terrorist groups.
Look for high gasoline, high gold, and exploding Seavans. - nonpareil, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1I have to be honest - I want this to happen. Not because the mere act of detonating a nuclear weapon will make the world a better place, but because it will be a testament - A HUGE ONE - to America's utter failure on yet another front. This may be precisely the kind of thing that *has* to happen in order for the electorate in this country to wake up from its silly slumber.
On another level, one theory of deterrence is referred to as "universal armament" (think MAD writ large) - though I disagree with it, I imagine many of its proponents would be glad to hear the DPRK's got a nuke. - *blu*, on 10/12/2007, -8/+6um... Iraq and North Korea are two different countries.
- wurzelgummage, on 10/12/2007, -9/+5Zomg. How can this happen? I thought the regime change in Iraq was going to stop crazy dictators having WMD?
/SARCASM - tmcc, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1Crazy *middle eastern* dictators
- wurzelgummage, on 10/12/2007, -7/+3I know.
- alphaone, on 10/12/2007, -14/+8China warned of "serious consequences" if Kim Jong-il went ahead with the test.
Sweet, let those two kill each other and our soldiers live.
