- BulkHedd, on 10/12/2007, -39/+188Wait, is that why Kerry got stuck in Vietnam?
- Ozmotear, on 10/12/2007, -13/+116I wouldn't say hes done everything wrong.
He did sign that "Do Not Call List" into law. My Dinners have been phone call free since 2003. - rokinroj, on 10/12/2007, -66/+164unlike the genius we have in office now.
- streak, on 10/12/2007, -52/+139Thanks to George W. Bush's strong work ethic, inquisitive nature and diligence, we are safely in Iraq today.
- CARPEDATAM, on 10/12/2007, -9/+72Either study hard or marry rich....
- heysuburbia, on 10/12/2007, -69/+126It was a "botched joke" meant to target the president, not U.S. troops.
The GOP is DESPERATE. - Artifez, on 10/12/2007, -24/+72I'm a vet and honestly, this is true, most people in the millitary are there because they have no place else to go.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -39/+80***** moron? He enlisted himself.
- heysuburbia, on 10/12/2007, -37/+75According to the aide, Kerry meant to say:
(Which is actually a really funny joke towards Bush)
"I can't over stress the importance of a great education. Do you know where you end up if you don't study, if you aren't smart, if you're intellectually lazy? You end up getting us stuck in a war in Iraq."' - InetRoadkill, on 10/12/2007, -26/+64""He also made a lot of people mad by meeting the North Vietnamese leadership back in the day too.""
You do know that Kerry's meeting with the NV was done under full knowledge and approval of the US state dept, and that the topic of the meeting was to negotiate the return and repatriation of American POWs being held by the NV. The bastard. Looking out for our POWs. What was he thinking? - Lynxpro, on 10/12/2007, -24/+59I posted a similar comment in a different thread on here.
This is the guy who claims to be an "intellectual" yet did worse than (GW) Bush at university.
He's campaining for a candidate [Angelides aka "Michael Dukakis Part Deux"] who despite running in an election year where Republicans are anything but fashionable is going to most likely lose by 20+ points to the incumbant Republican governor [Schwarzenegger] because the guy wants to tax everything. When candidates try to claim they are going to "tax the rich" and consider "the rich" to be a family making over $100,000 in one of the most expensive states to live in (California), that doesn't win too many voters over. Even though I do not live in the San Francisco Bay Area, making $100,000 in Northern California between two people is still treading water (considering the median home price). - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -25/+56I don't care HOW you feel about Bush? But you can't sit there and tell me Kerry isn't a fat bag of donkey crap either.
- ralph12c41, on 10/12/2007, -26/+53Thank you John Kerry for creating the Wellstone moment" of the 2006 campaign. It was only and matter of time before Pelosi, Durban, Dean,or Kerry opened their mouths and took the whole Lib effort down the drain. Way to go!! The gift that keeps on giving!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -33/+60Even if it was a botched joke, it was in incredibly bad taste.
Kerry F'd up bigtime. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -25/+50@ elpayo
No dude, he knew exactly what he was saying. He's only back-peddling now because he got called out. Say what you want about Bush, Kerry is a complete bag o' douche. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -58/+83karmatic
You sir, are an ass. - HoboMaster, on 10/12/2007, -57/+80Of course he claims it was aimed at Bush. He's a politician. They lie to cover up what they did.
If Bush said this, you'd be all over him. Kerry's a considerably better speaker than Bush. He meant exactly what he said. On top of that, he was speaking to a bunch of college students about staying in school. If this was really a "botched joke," then he messed up incredibly badly. I don't buy it. - TheKlaw, on 10/12/2007, -23/+44The only thing noteworthy about this article is that Kerry made the kind of speaking mistake that Bush constantly makes. It's pretty ironic, since that's what Kerry was trying to make fun of Bush for. People just think he meant it because he usually just doesn't make mistakes like that, whereas people are pretty quick to write off the speaking blunders Bush makes.
- hellyes, on 10/12/2007, -2/+22link to the video
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vLuMWiQ6r2o - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -25/+44Kinda like Bush was "stay the course" before "never been stay the course".
- thelonesailor, on 10/12/2007, -4/+21Some of the brightest minds I have encountered were leaders and shipmates in the Navy. There are people that come in because of a lack of choices but this is nothing compared to a military full of draftees. An apology from a politician is pretty useless, especially since I put so little merit in what they think in the first place...
- rokinroj, on 10/12/2007, -9/+26the irony is killing me.
- TheBarge, on 10/12/2007, -21/+37I love how some people call this a botched joke and use every other excuse they can come up with. He screwed up, plain and simple. If this had come out of a republicans mouth people would be jumping down his/her throat right now, not making up excuses. And yes, the republicans (or neocons as some people like to throw around) would be doing the exact same thing, calling it a botched joke.
Republican, Democrat, who cares, he screwed up and should have kept his pie hole shut. - LarianLeQuella, on 10/12/2007, -13/+27Say what?
http://www.heritage.org/Research/NationalSecurity/cda05-08.cfm is an excellent article (just googled it), I like one of the conclusions:
"This paper reviews the demographic status of the all-volunteer military and refutes the claim that enlisted troops are underprivileged and come from underprivileged areas. In terms of education, household income, race, and home origin, the troops are more similar than dissimilar to the genĀeral population."
WE ARE YOU! - CandidateZero, on 10/12/2007, -32/+46In context, Kerry's quote referred to the Bush administration's failure to study up on Iraq before barging in, expecting to be greeted as liberators.
The Bush administration is stuck in Iraq because they failed to educate themselves on the realities America is now facing there.
Like that US State Department official said, America was stupid and arrogant about Iraq.
Although, given the sound bite-centric news media, Kerry should've known his words were at risk of being taken out of context from their meaning. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -16/+27Sorry I call *****. Kerry knows exactly what he said and he meant it to sound as such. He's just backpeddling because now he's getting negative publicity. Had no one said a damn thing about it, he wouldn't have apologized.
There's a difference between being sorry you got caught, and regretting your actions before anyone says anything. - BedlamX, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14At this point I have formed my opinion on Kerry and his statements that aside. I have read some disturbing comments by some here that think our military is made up of a bunch of uneducated individuals or as one person stated it "educated people don't join the military.
Well with today's technology being what it is, Do you honestly think an idiot can operate a $15 billion weapon system. Fly a jet, operate a tank. Or successfully network an aircraft carrier and keep it running?
Our military is made up of people who wanted a different career option, a chance to explore the world. They are not idiots. We should be thanking them for their service not assuming the level of their intelligence is less than our own. - eplawless, on 10/12/2007, -35/+47"The White House's attempt to distort my true statement is a remarkable testament to their abject failure in making America safe," the Massachusetts senator said. "It's a stunning statement about their willingness to reduce anything in America to raw politics."
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -10/+20Katrina? Are you honestly telling me that Republicans caused a hurricane to hit New Orleans???
If so... wow, you nut-jobs are more bonkers than I thought. - Sumyunguy, on 10/12/2007, -22/+32If John Kerry didn't put his foot in his mouth every time he said something it wouldn't be a problem.
I can just see him in the campaign bus preparing for this speech getting all excited about zinging the President with his little jab. Unfortunately, he got a little too excited and messed it all up an now he looks like an idiot...Again! - nickdr, on 10/12/2007, -5/+15oh yeah Kerry... real intellectual. finished his freshman year with 4 D's, good stuff. went to Vietnam for what, 4 months? then bashes the U.S. soldiers multiple times? is this really the best man that the Dem's could produce?
seriously Kerry is a ***** up, can't even tell a joke, that no matter how you twist it, it doesn't hit the point he was trying to make. Kerry is bashing the U.S. soldiers, men and women who all willingly enlisted. he does realize that people in the military can range from totally retarded to brilliant? (kinda like Congress)
i would love to see Kerry try to pass through the Air Force Academy. - rokinroj, on 10/12/2007, -36/+45@jonnydobad & hobomaster
Did you read the article? Or just the usual partisan politics? Did you read how the joke was supposed to be delivered? He screwed it up.
Doesn't the right normally come here to Digg and defend poor public speaking and denounce those that make fun of it? - pawchikapawpaw, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12seriously though. what exactly, is the democratic position on iraq? i'm not really looking to laugh or belittle the position, i just want someone to lay it out here and make it clear for everyone. political junkies here ought to be able to give a small outline of the policy that the democrats are running on, that does not involve bush at all.
i'm looking at kerry's response and all he did was insult half of the population without even trying to convince people that there is a reason why democrats are the better choice. all it says is "vote for us, because we hate them as much as you do." what happened to "because THIS is what we will do." are the democrats afraid of their own agenda? - ardenr, on 10/12/2007, -14/+23Not to insult anyone here, but if we were better educated as a whole, we wouldn't be in Iraq.
- OriginalLucid1, on 10/12/2007, -6/+15What a bunch of elitists ***** you democrats are. "It was a joke!" Please! Do you think you are dealing with children? It is no secret that Kerry finds the military and those who serve contemptible. He has called them everything from Ghengis Kahn to terrorists. You guys keep forgetting that this is a new day and Walter Cronkite can't cover for you anymore.
- mjferring, on 10/12/2007, -6/+15President Bush's Yale College Average Class Score = 77
Senator Kerry's Yale College Average Class Score = 76
Maybe the whole problem is with Yale. It appears that a C student from Yale may have a problem with public speaking. - becknell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9I wasn't exactly struggling in college, however I did become disinterested because I felt I wasn't DOING anything for anybody. So I joined the Marines. I don't regret it, once I get out I'll appreciate school much more. Not to mention I know service members of all facets of education including a structural engineer who was making 80+k before he enlisted.
That being said there are pluses... and definitely a lot of minuses when it comes to the military (and the Marines in general being the most militaristic). I won't go into minute details. Also, I haven't gone to Iraq even though I'd like to... it's not as easy to go as you think. - sabotank, on 10/12/2007, -4/+13kerry-heinz, that is
- williamdyer, on 10/12/2007, -5/+13Dude, the general population includes the people who couldn't drag themselves away form the TV to walk to high ground. 20-30% of the general population drops out of high school. You are basically saying enlisted men are better educated than the staff at Hot Topic.
- smileygirl, on 10/12/2007, -7/+15 Kerry wasn't aiming the "joke" to Bush. That doesn't even make sense. Whether or not it was intended, it offended alot of people, so anyone with a shread of class would apologize. Instead, he chose to somehow make this about Bush which shows and even greater lack of class.
I think all people can admit to saying something stupid and hurtful before. I think most people apologize if their words have hurt someone whether it is intentional or not. I think Kerry is a pompous ass who really doesn't care if he offended our troops or not. - KenLin, on 10/12/2007, -12/+20Inaccurate.
Full Kerry response:
"If anyone thinks a veteran would criticize the more than 140,000 heroes serving in Iraq and not the president who got us stuck there, they're crazy. This is the classic G.O.P. playbook. I'm sick and tired of these despicable Republican attacks that always seem to come from those who never can be found to serve in war, but love to attack those who did.
I'm not going to be lectured by a stuffed suit White House mouthpiece standing behind a podium, or doughy Rush Limbaugh, who no doubt today will take a break from belittling Michael J. Fox's Parkinson's disease to start lying about me just as they have lied about Iraq . It disgusts me that these Republican hacks, who have never worn the uniform of our country lie and distort so blatantly and carelessly about those who have.
The people who owe our troops an apology are George W. Bush and Dick Cheney who misled America into war and have given us a Katrina foreign policy that has betrayed our ideals, killed and maimed our soldiers, and widened the terrorist threat instead of defeating it. These Republicans are afraid to debate veterans who live and breathe the concerns of our troops, not the empty slogans of an Administration that sent our brave troops to war without body armor.
Bottom line, these Republicans want to debate straw men because they're afraid to debate real men. And this time it won't work because we're going to stay in their face with the truth and deny them even a sliver of light for their distortions. No Democrat will be bullied by an administration that has a cut and run policy in Afghanistan and a stand still and lose strategy in Iraq ." - AmishRefugee, on 10/12/2007, -6/+14who the f*** decided he was the best democrat to run for president anyway?
- farstar, on 10/12/2007, -10/+17Headline is inflammatory and inaccurate. Marked as inaccurate.
- bishop, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12Regardless of how one chooses to interpret his comments, Kerry just gave the Republicans an early Christmas present.
- jackkerouac, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Yeah, except that mcCain told him to ***** off. Hello back again.
Oh, and the National Veterans Association also told him to ***** off. - NeverbyLuck, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Don't you know man, if you aren't liberal on here, you're gonna get creamed? I gave you the one digg I could.
- HoboMaster, on 10/12/2007, -19/+26Just to clarify, for those claiming partisan politics: I vote Libertarian.
And yes, I read the article. So his aides claim it was supposed to be a joke. I say they're lying. Again, lying and covering things up is what politicians do best. - Clemenceau, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7There are at least 5 people from my senior class that joined the military, and most of them planned to do it for a long time before they signed up. I think maybe one of them did it for the money.
- smileygirl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6The company I work for will hire a person who has been in the military BEFORE a person with a college degree because of their discipline, ability to overcome adversity, team player and dependability. People have all different strengths and abilities and I am so damn grateful for our military because I know I wouldn't be able to do their job.
- *blu*, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10"America is not in danger."
You, my friend, are very blind. Your son is doing a wonderful thing, and it's a shame that his parents do not support him in it. -
