How do you reconcile science issues such as evolution and the Earth's 4.5 billion year age with your faith? As president when there is a conflict between science and the Bible which one will take precedence?

Thanks!
Bruce - nosecohn, on 08/29/2008, -2/+67On the politics of fear...
Foreign terrorism is a real threat, but statistically, Americans have a greater chance of being struck by lightning, and about 1000 times greater chance of being killed driving a car, than falling victim to a terrorist attack. Yet the country has completely changed it’s policies, redirected its resources, curbed civil liberties, and even sent our brave men and women off to die, all to avoid a threat that doesn’t even rank among the top 50 to American lives. If the goal of our enemies is truly to “terrorize”, then haven’t we handed them their victory by our own fearful reaction? - jiqiren, on 08/29/2008, -3/+68Why do you both support bailing out banks after issuing bad loans? Why are you allowing the federal reserve to print money to cover this mess? What happened to the free market where we let bad companies die? How can we expect banks to ever be honest when they know the government will always be willing to hand over a nice bail out package? Why are we not holding banking officials accountable as criminals for the outright fraud they oversaw? Many of these bankers are... laughing all the way to the bank. In the meantime, my $ is fast becoming worthless.
- nosecohn, on 08/29/2008, -2/+40In the decades since the "War on Drugs" began, the pervasiveness of use, potency, availability, number of drug-related crimes, and prison population have all gone up, while the average cost of drugs has generally declined. Do you believe that our current federal drug policy is effective and in the best interest of US citizens? If not, what would you do to change it?
- philovivero, on 08/29/2008, -1/+38When will the party begin to consider fiscal responsibility as a core value again? It seems a pretty clear win to eliminate all war profiteering from our budget, could you comment on why you disagree or why if you agree, you aren't doing something about it?
- kemp34, on 08/29/2008, -2/+39Number one question: What is your explicit plan for restoring the Constitutional Republic?
- nosecohn, on 08/29/2008, -5/+39If you become President, and members of the former administration are indicted or convicted of crimes committed while they were in office, will you pardon them?
- Suzpaz, on 08/29/2008, -0/+33Dear CBS experts,
Was nominating Sarah Palin for the VP position a political move to try and gain more female voters by adding another historical factor to this falls election, or was it purely for her policies?

Oslo, Norway - nosecohn, on 08/29/2008, -3/+34If the Federal government regards some businesses (like Bear Stearns, FannieMae, etc.) as "too big to fail," does that mean other suffering businesses are "too small to save?"
- vandernderyid, on 08/29/2008, -6/+34For Sen. McCain:
Gov. Palin is under investigation by the Alaskan legislature for abuse of power. Does Gov. Palin's use of her political office for private ends worry you? - lensman00, on 08/29/2008, -1/+24Just to mix it up a little, here's a question for Katie Couric:
A free press was considered one of the bedrocks of freedom at the founding of the nation. Today's press appears to be constrained by a federal government that severely limits access by citing security or professional privilege. Will this trend toward more limited media access continue, or will journalists find a way to swing the pendulum back toward greater government transparency? - xieodeluxed, on 08/29/2008, -3/+23And do so without mentioning the bible, can't ignore that bit about separation of church and state.
- uriman, on 08/29/2008, -3/+20There seems to be an increasing desire by the corporate entities who own the gateways of the internet are trying to control the public's access to it and how we use it. What do the candidates think about net neutrality?
Another point I would like to address is the speed and availability broadband internet here in the US. What is termed broadband internet here in America is considered slow compared to nations in Europe and Asia. Broadband internet adoption is also quite slow as there seems to be a lack of affordable broadband options in a many portions of the country especially with the extra charges for not having cable TV or a wired phone line. Affordable broadband internet access may rank low in the priorities for the candidates, but fast speeds would make ideas such as streaming CBS available for the masses and would encourage others ideas to be created. To me this topic seems quite fitting as the news media are seeking more feedback, and this certainly would allow more people to enter the discussion. Are the candidates even thinking of bridging this internet gap in the future? - post3r3r, on 08/29/2008, -8/+24"I'm Katie Couric. I hope you knew that." - WTF
- sockpuppets, on 08/29/2008, -1/+15You're talking to an imaginary bear, man.
- inetiatic, on 08/29/2008, -3/+16Great question, I really think this should be addressed
- fezzic, on 08/29/2008, -2/+13The Congressional Budget Office estimates the Mae-Mac debacle will cost taxpayers $100 billion or more. Yet Freddie Mac CEO Richard Syron was paid $14.5 million for 2007, including a $2.2 million "performance bonus." Syron has taken home $38 million total from Freddie in the past five years. Fannie Mae CEO Daniel Mudd got $14.2 million for 2007, plus a substantial prepaid life insurance policy and other perks including "financial counseling, an executive health program and dining services," the Washington Post reported.
The question, when the taxpayers bailed out these poorly run institutions, why did they let the CEOs keep the salaries they clearly did not earn with their dishonest reporting of financials and stupid decisions that ended up costing tax payers billions? Is it because the two combined to "donate" to the two parties somewhere in the area of $200 million? - inactive, on 08/29/2008, -2/+11Please everyone: avoid open-ended questions like this. When asking a question, first research the candidate's position or their past statements and actions and then base your question on that. For instance, search for 'net-neutrality' here:
http://www.johnmccain.com/Informing/Issues/CBCD3A4 ...
If you ask open-ended questions, politicians will simply reply with a stock speech, change the subject. etc. - Suzpaz, on 08/29/2008, -3/+12Senator McCain,
Why do you think you are so unpopular in European countries? Don't you think it's important to have support from other countries around the world, even though they don't directly impact the outcome of the November election?
Alexander
Oslo, Norway - nosecohn, on 08/29/2008, -3/+12The United States bills itself as a paragon of democracy, yet we have repeatedly supported dictators and oppressive regimes around the world. It usually comes back to bite us, and it breeds a great deal of resentment in the people who are forced to live under those regimes. A long list of bad characters, including Manuel Noriega, Sadaam Hussein, the Shah of Iran, Augusto Pinochet, and even Osama bin Laden were all at one time supported by American tax dollars, ostensibly to further our own interests. When is it OK to support oppressive regimes abroad?
- gaqua, on 08/29/2008, -0/+8Dear John McCain:
Can you address the lack of competition due to monopolies in the cable television and internet industry and your thoughts on it? In most locations, even large cities numbering in the millions, there's only one company from which we can purchase cable television and broadband internet access simultaneously. Being forced to pay exorbitant fees that sometimes rise multiple times per year due to lack of competition in the marketplace makes it difficult for those who work from home or run small businesses to manage their finances. - Schmapdi, on 08/29/2008, -1/+9Guys - don't Digg down other people's questions just because you don't agree with their leanings/content. Also - no one cares if you like CBS news or Katie Couric, either way its a pretty cool opportunity here for Diggers.
- jester55, on 08/29/2008, -2/+10Sen. McCain: How did you come to the decision to make Gov. Sarah Palin your vice president?
- Spoomeister, on 08/29/2008, -1/+8Isn't having a convention in a city named St. Paul, for a party that has silenced, mocked, belittled and ignored Ron Paul, just ASKING for trouble?

Are my friends and I going to be drafted to fight yet another war on foreign soil? Assure me that we won't. - southeastbeast, on 08/29/2008, -4/+9If Obama taught constitutional law, why would he vote for the PATRIOT Act and FISA?
How is Edwards affair any different McCain leaving his wife after she was in an accident?
Both hypocrites IMO, but as I always say: Obama is the lesser of the two evils >;]
/flameon - chourobin, on 08/30/2008, -0/+5To McCain, Knowing what you know today, would you have still voted for George W. Bush in 2004, and in 2000. If so, do you believe Bush's presidency was a success? How will you be any different?
- hotvision, on 08/29/2008, -0/+5Dear Republicans,

- XxModestMousexX, on 08/29/2008, -0/+4Have you been following any candidates campaign?
- TheJimid, on 08/29/2008, -0/+4Hi Katie,
John McCain promised a position paper on his opinion of medical marijuana before the New Hampshire Primary and we still have not seen it. Medical marijuana patients in 12 states and all voters deserve the right to make an educated decision on the topic when they go to the polls. - vypergts, on 08/29/2008, -0/+4I think that rather than asking questions related to their platforms (most of which can be easily answered with a quick google search and some basic research) I think digg users should go with some more creative questions like those asked in a normal job interview. I bet there would be some really good answers if Katie asked off-the-wall questions that test critical thinking and decision making skills like google uses:
1. How many golf balls can fit in a school bus?
2. You are shrunk to the height of a nickel and your mass is proportionally reduced so as to maintain your original density. You are then thrown into an empty glass blender. The blades will start moving in 60 seconds. What do you do?
3. How much should you charge to wash all the windows in Seattle?
4. How would you find out if a machine’s stack grows up or down in memory?
5. Explain a database in three sentences to your eight-year-old nephew.
6. How many times a day does a clock’s hands overlap?
7. You have to get from point A to point B. You don’t know if you can get there. What would you do?
8. Imagine you have a closet full of shirts. It’s very hard to find a shirt. So what can you do to organize your shirts for easy retrieval?
9. Every man in a village of 100 married couples has cheated on his wife. Every wife in the village instantly knows when a man other than her husband has cheated, but does not know when her own husband has. The village has a law that does not allow for adultery. Any wife who can prove that her husband is unfaithful must kill him that very day. The women of the village would never disobey this law. One day, the queen of the village visits and announces that at least one husband has been unfaithful. What happens?
10. In a country in which people only want boys, every family continues to have children until they have a boy. if they have a girl, they have another child. if they have a boy, they stop. what is the proportion of boys to girls in the country? - nosecohn, on 08/29/2008, -9/+13For Senator McCain: As a former POW, please imagine this scenario: a high-ranking US soldier, with knowledge of battle plans and tactics, is captured overseas by an enemy force. His captors release a video claiming that they will interrogate the officer using the exact same techniques that have been employed by the US Military in Guantanamo Bay, and by the CIA’s proxies in extraordinary renditions to third-party prisons. Does the US have any legal or moral ground on which to oppose such techniques?
- SniperZ, on 08/29/2008, -4/+8Mr. McCain,
Will you give me one of your houses? - Someguy101, on 02/19/2009, -0/+4McCain: If you were to die the day after becoming president do you honestly feel that Mrs. Palin has the experience, knowledge and judgment needed to assume the role of President of the United States and Commander in Cheif of the US Military? If you feel she is qualified what sets her apart from Obama whom you've accused repeatedly of not being experienced enough for the job.
- philovivero, on 08/29/2008, -3/+7Who at the Republican Convention do you suppose would answer this question? It would be interesting to hear their perspective on it, but did you perhaps think these questions were for the Democrats?
(Also: "holds true") - Lowry, on 08/29/2008, -0/+4McCain/NeoConservatives,
Why do we spend hundreds of Billion of dollars fighting "terrorism" while leaving our own front door is wide open? It has been left open since 9/11. - brandonmat, on 08/29/2008, -1/+5Senator McCain: Your campaign has shown speculative tax cuts for the wealthy which make only approximately 5% of the population. A democracy by definition is suppose to be majority rule with protection of the minority. However, you seem to have this formula mixed. How are you going to abide by the rule of democracy and what are you specifically going to do for the majority?
- nicheplayer, on 08/29/2008, -3/+7What advice would you give Sarah Palin on the amount of mascara she should wear for public appearances?
- dracostimpy, on 08/29/2008, -0/+4Now now PB, youth and inexperience doesn't make her less qualified than any other candidate. In fact, youth and inexperience is actually considered a virtue by some; take CBS Evening News, for example...
- inactive, on 08/29/2008, -1/+4Is politics real? :) Barack's VP choice likes McCain. Everyone is related in bloodlines, and they are funded by the same people :)
- uriman, on 08/29/2008, -2/+5We allow dictators and international criminals to be held accountable to the international criminal court, but it seems that America is exempt by not joining the ICC. Isn't this a double standard?
Speaking of double standards, why do we ignore Israel's alleged nuclear arsenal and support the nuclear program of India, who developed nuclear weapons illegally, when we bash Iran for the possibility of developing nuclear weapons. It seems that we are implying that as long as you support the United States you are allowed to secretly develop weapons.
Speaking of hypocrisies, there are many in Washington who want to punish China for unfair trade, but America subsidizes farmers and farm corporations with hundreds of billions of dollars at the expense of poor African farmers. - Taiyoryu, on 08/30/2008, -0/+3One of the tenets Change Congress http://www.change-congress.org espouses in their pledge is transparency in government.
Palin is coming in as an outsider under the guise of a reformer to fight pork spending and earmarks. Will she and McCain take the change-congress.org pledge (as Barack Obama already has) and urge their colleagues to do the same? - dagnome1984, on 08/29/2008, -0/+3Katie will love that question. I have my suspicions she too is an atheist. Come out of the closet. We will support you.
- Billistic, on 08/29/2008, -1/+4The gay marriage issue is just a political red herring to keep people from paying attention to the real issues, the ones that effect us all. Besides America is a free country where you should be able to do whatever you want right? Marriage shouldn't be part of government anyway, marriage is an arm of religion, religion and state aren't supposed to mix.
- dn11, on 08/29/2008, -1/+4do you care to state your propaganda in the form of a question?
