- canewediggit, on 08/18/2008, -44/+1175you serious? katie wants our questions? oh. *****. anyways............
for mccain - why do you still feel the war in iraq is justifiable even though all pretexts given (wmd, 9/11 ties, al-qaeda ties, anthrax ties, etc) have been proven false? what specific threat did saddam pose to me as an american going about my day to day in miami?
for obama - why do you feel it is necessary to protect inefficient american enterprises by not being in full favor of global free trade agreements?
for katie - dinner? saturday?
got plenty more, but i'm sure the rest of the diggers will fill this in soon enough. - sameerb, on 08/18/2008, -16/+1008Question to both
Describe a situation when you think it is appropriate to lie to American Public - Glugory, on 08/18/2008, -43/+858For McCain: Please clearly define what victory in Iraq means to you.
- NUKE1SHOW, on 08/18/2008, -33/+801What are the candidate's stances on Net Neutrality and ISPs like Comcast throttling our bandwidth through deep-packet inspection, and their stance on online privacy, where ISPs use tracking mechanisms like Phorm and NebuAD, and do they support organizations such as the MPAA and RIAA going after weak individuals in their attack on piracy?
Kurt, http://NUKE1.net - DonnyBahama, on 08/18/2008, -8/+680For both candidates: Would you agree to a debate in which your statements are verified in real time by nonpartisan FactCheck.org - and corrected information is displayed for viewers? If not, why not?
- gorkha, on 08/18/2008, -25/+639McCain/Obama: Do you support the removal of the No Child Left Behind Act?
As a student in the California public education system, I have found that the act has severely cut sports and after school programs at every school I have attended. My high school for instance was in an extremely poor area of Ventura County and cut every single art program that was not a required program to graduate, a long with technology classes and auto shop. How are we supposed to continue life after high school without any clue or any interest in life? Not only is it unfair to students who are interested in learning, it deprives the kids who aren't interested. These kids don't have any other classes but Math and English, how are we supposed to capture their interests and make them want to learn? How about classes which inspire, or at least teach some basic knowledge that one needs in the real world, if they don't continue on to college. How to maintain a budget, insurance, jobs, W2 forms, Taxes.
McCain/Obama: What is your stance on Net Neutrality?
McCain/Obama: What is your stance on Medical Marijuanna and its use for cancer patients? And can you provide evidence to back up your claims?
McCain/Obama: When can we get our freedoms back? - thetanbark, on 08/18/2008, -64/+551Katie, I'd certainly like to know...
Why the hell are you still running Internet Explorer? - Nightspark, on 08/18/2008, -12/+497I want to urge Katie and all media speaking to the candidates to keep them honest: if either candidate says something incorrect or contradicts statements they made earlier, call them out on it. Push hard! Expose weaknesses. The public needs to see the real candidates.
- philovivero, on 08/18/2008, -51/+436Why do none of the candidates support a smaller government? Traditionally the Republican party was a "conservative" party, whose ideals were supposedly different from the "liberal" party in that it favoured a smaller, more limited government.
Now that the neocons advocate a large, virtually limitless government, but simply spending the tax dollars on war profiteering and big-business handouts rather than social programs, the true conservatives are left without a candidate.
Is this even a problem? Is a larger, more powerful government what all the voters want? Is the only real difference between the two political ideologies simply whether we spend the money on a multinational corporation or on a social program? - jamkey, on 08/18/2008, -14/+351For both: Which of Bush's policies will you continue and which will you try to reverse or alter significantly?
- crimson117, on 08/18/2008, -23/+347McCain / Obama: We've heard your personal opinions on marriage, but why does our secular government need to get involved in the religious institution of marriage at all? Shouldn't we leave that up to each religion to figure out for itself?
- IanCube, on 08/18/2008, -13/+300McCain/Obama: Why is government funding for college students, mainly through programs like FAFSA, so closely tied to the parents income? Just because the student lives at home does not make them completely dependent on their parents. Why is it assumed that the parents will use their income to pay for the student's education? With rising costs in health care, food, mortgages, and fuel, many parents have other expenses they must bear the burden for.
McCain/Obama: Google, among a host of other companies, has recently launched an initiative called "Free The Airwaves" to promote unlicensed use of “white spaces” in the analog TV broadcast signal that will no longer be needed once all TV broadcasters shift to digital signals in February 2009. Do you support open, free and unlicensed use of "white spaces" in the analog spectrum? More information at http://freetheairwaves.com/ - Me1000, on 08/18/2008, -40/+292McCain: Why did you promise that you would run a clean campaign, but almost every ad that you have run was slandering Obama with lies?
- ted_hosmann, on 08/18/2008, -6/+215Patriot Act - Honestly, did you read it?
- quaunaut, on 08/18/2008, -7/+204Here are mine:
Obama:
You spoke out against the limiting of our personal freedoms long ago, but you budged on the FISA bill, and voted for the Patriot Act. Do you think the places those bills limit our freedoms are a worthwhile trade for the security they give, or simply the evils of having to negotiate?
McCain: With a plan for Iraq not unlike that of South Korea, Japan, or Germany, how do you see us using Iraq in the future? And what do you say to those that we are turning it into an extension of the American empire, perhaps fueling the hatred of smaller third world nations throughout the Middle East, and the world? - KnockItOff, on 08/18/2008, -14/+207For McCain: In the past McCain has been adamant in prohibiting the use of torture. This changed when he voted to allow the CIA to conduct torture. How can he explain this significant change of heart and mind?
- notque, on 08/18/2008, -16/+186For McCain: Why are you for staying in Iraq when the majority of the Iraqi, and American public are against it?
- blm0303, on 08/18/2008, -18/+176What are you going to do to help the schools in this nation? My kids will enter a school that has up to 40 kids in a class and no art or music, since we can't seem to pass a school referendum. Needless to say, we are looking at private school since it doesn't seem the public schools in my area (IL) are the great learning centers they once were.
- sameerb, on 08/18/2008, -5/+138Describe a situation when you think "Geneva conventions" doesn't apply in war?
- lazlonger, on 08/18/2008, -8/+131for god's sake. she JUST heard of Digg....she's got a lot of bandwagons to jump on, give her time.
- Berkana, on 08/18/2008, -7/+128Okay, Katie, here it goes:
Ever since Ron Paul dropped out of the presidential race, no candidate, (with the possible exception of Bob Barr) has mentioned monetary policy, yet monetary policy and the monetization of debt is the root reason for the banking crisis we're experiencing. What do Obama and McCain know about monetary policy, and do they intend to carry out the tough leadership in reforming our monetary system to combat the problems that are present in our current system?
I'm not talking about something as narrow as letting competing currencies into the marketplace (as Ron Paul advocated); I'm talking about the monetization of debt under fractional reserve banking, that let run-away greed drive banks and mortgage lenders to recklessly endebt as many people as possible without the assets to back the credit they lent out, and with the fact that all our money is borrowed into existence, and all eventually has to be paid back with more than was borrowed, putting us in a never-ending cycle of debt that can never be paid off.
If the candidates do not know about this matter, urge them to be honest and admit ignorance. Nothing is worse than a candidate feigning expertise in something he knows nothing about.
For background on what I'm talking about, please see this:
http://digg.com/business_finance/Our_Debt_based_Mo ... - OUChevelleSS, on 08/18/2008, -10/+131Ohhh, I like this one.
- Killer57, on 08/18/2008, -22/+142Obama, in your Berlin speech you spoke of walls that separate the world today, what is your stance on the wall erected by Israel around the Palestinians? Will you begin to hold Israel accountable for their human rights violations?
- Kohaxx, on 08/18/2008, -4/+119Kudos to Katie Couric for taking the initiative to get comments from Digg, I'm surprised, and I'm excited to hear how this plays out in the debate.
John McCain: As a former POW yourself, I am surprised you voted against prohibiting waterboarding in CIA interogations. Why would a victim of torture such as yourself allow such techniques to be used now? Since you are very concerned with national security, what will prevent your policies from being used on American citizens and innocent people?
Barack Obama: You voted for the FISA bill which gave telecomms retroactive immunity, yet you have stated you want to hold the Bush administration accountable for lying to the public about the war in Iraq. Granted you do not want to start a partisan witch hunt right after getting in office but what will you do to protect the liberties of the American people and prevent legislation like the Patriot Act from passing again? - Glugory, on 08/18/2008, -8/+110Dude McCain doesn't even know what the internet is... great question!
- sockpuppets, on 08/18/2008, -14/+104LEAVE KATIE COURIC ALONE!!!
- Stormwern, on 08/18/2008, -8/+92McCain: How much of your economic policy was written by Phil Graham?
Obama: Do you believe the two party system is a reason for the partisanship in washington? And if so, would you take steps to promote third parties as president, even if it hurts your own party? - sameerb, on 08/18/2008, -8/+92should keep them in a cone of silence when you ask this question
- Enche, on 08/18/2008, -15/+98GET FIREFOX BABE
- YesImAChick, on 08/18/2008, -30/+111McCain / Obama: Why should married people get breaks for taxes? (I can see getting tax breaks for having kids, but just for being married??
- Vash_aka_TK, on 08/18/2008, -21/+97How will you present yourself to a community of people such as Digg, and help them with their stances such as Net Neutrality? How will you be able to maintain a barrier between the Government and organizations such as the RIAA and MPAA who are literally suing people by the thousands?
Will McCain and Obama be willing to take time out to talk to people immersed in the technology culture we have?
Will you be willing to work with the Electronic Frontier Foundation? - MrEddy, on 08/18/2008, -8/+82Obama - When the next terrorist attack happens in the U.S. Do you have any plans for how to prevent the nation from giving up it's civil liberties and reacting out of fear?
- ieure, on 08/18/2008, -10/+82In 1984, Barack Obama was 23. McCain was 48.
- naughtyboy, on 08/18/2008, -32/+102Will we see increased funding of renewable energy solutions?
- digitalMessiah, on 08/18/2008, -9/+77What is your plan to reduce the fear level in the country and restore the freedoms that were common place a generation ago?
The homeland security threat level has been on an elevated or above level since it was established. It is now a constant reminder of danger and fear. The goal would be to have anything other then Green something we would worry over. As it is now people are in such a fear state even with it is High/Red people are used to it. Because of this fear level and arbitrary color rating we loose common freedoms like taking water on a plane, filming a public building, putting up a LED sign in public without having the bomb squad called, , etc. Having more wars or killing people who could be dangerous or arresting suspicious people does not seem to the be answer. Sure if there is a clear threat and you eliminate it great, danger over but nothing seems to be getting better.
In short – how the hell do we get this to be green by the end of your term!
http://www.dhs.gov/xinfoshare/programs/Copy_of_pre ... - LawSchoolBound, on 08/18/2008, -1/+65Obama/McCain: Please explain why you're willing to participate in a forum on faith but won't participate in one about science. Clearly the future of science in our country is a critical topic so why not have an in depth discussion about it?
- PaxRomana, on 08/19/2008, -1/+64To both candidates:
1. Under what circumstances would you institute a draft? Will you commit to the American people that you will not institute a draft while president?
2. What specific government programs would you cut to balance the budget? If you do not support cuts, what groups would you tax to make up the difference?
3. Describe 3 of America's Greatest Failures.
4. Would you support linking minimum wage increases to Congress's standard of living increases? If not, why not?
5. Around 50% of the American people will likely not vote for you (no matter which candidate you are), why do you think they voted for your opponent?
6. Please name the state capitals of Oregon, Rhode Island, Delaware, Maryland, and Missouri.
7. Briefly describe the theory of evolution and why you do or do not believe in it.
8. Is a college education valuable? If so, should or shouldn't it be freely available?
9. Name one philosopher that has influenced you.
10. Which is preferable: A democracy unfriendly to US interests or a dictatorship ally? - mindchaotica, on 08/18/2008, -35/+97If elected President, what is your agenda to helping those people in the fix/low-income sector, gain the skills needed to be able to advance in todays tech heavy job market. Also what is your plan to help improve low income housing?
- sockpuppets, on 08/18/2008, -14/+72I think I speak for everyone here when I ask:
Where did you get that awesome t-shirt? - uncertainty, on 08/18/2008, -3/+59This is the best question I have ever heard or read ever. I hope it makes it.
- zex18ro, on 08/18/2008, -11/+66For Obama:
In order to set yourself apart as a democrat, and from the failure of the last administration, how would you approach the brewing conflict in Georgia given that Bush's current condemnations of Russia seem to be an attempt to test the waters for U.S. involvement? Do you agree with the current President's analysis of the situation? - magnusdopus, on 08/18/2008, -9/+63For McCain : George Bush's economic policies were responsible for greatly increasing the budget deficit. Not only do you want to re-instate pretty much the same tax cuts, military spending, but you've advocated increasing these cuts. In light of this, how do you plan to cut the deficit? Cutting Earmarks is an automatic FAIL considering the entire Earmark program is a minor subset of the governments total spending.
For Obama : after year one and year two, where do you expect your universal health agenda to be? How will it be any different than the quagmire that the Clinton's proposed back in 94. - raclar, on 08/18/2008, -14/+65
Do you think everyone in the U.S. is entitled to health care? If so, how could this be achieved?
What role should employers play in providing health care to employees? - Oea420, on 08/19/2008, -3/+51Holy..
This is how ALL debates should be ran from NOW ON
With a nonpartisan citizen powered source giving a rundown on the truthfulness of each canidates statement... it would make lying or falsifying the truth in a debate a career buster... it would honestly lead way to a new era in politics... this idea needs to be adopted and applied to other things! GOOD IDEA A+++++++++++ WOULD READ AGAIN - lazlonger, on 08/18/2008, -4/+52god i want to digg this one 100 times...
- plasticmind, on 08/18/2008, -33/+79Please stop with the leading questions. This is about finding out what the candidates have to say, not about getting your agenda across.
- fxu1989, on 08/19/2008, -4/+48I buried you once so I could get the feeling of digging you up twice.
- schneidafunk, on 08/18/2008, -3/+47ditto, this is a great idea that I would love to see happen.
- reverman, on 08/18/2008, -4/+45Honestly while this question is valid and needs to be answered. It will never be answered clearly so i think it would be a waste to ask it.
- falstaff, on 08/18/2008, -10/+51Obama: Federal tax receipts jumped over 16% in the two years following the last round of tax cuts in 2003, far faster than the rise in GDP. Some of those tax cuts are the cuts for which you propose a repeal. Is there a backup plan to pay for the additional spending, tax credits and other financial obligations you have proposed in case federal receipts drop again?
