- SpeedSteamBoat, on 04/26/2009, -7/+95I disagree. I think the biggest obstacle is getting over STEREOTYPES of marijuana smokers. The smokers themselves are by and large as average as can be. In fact, most of the people who smoke marijuana are people you wouldn't immediately "expect" to smoke marijuana.
The "bare-foot hippy" image of the marijuana smoker has long been out of touch with the reality (if it ever was true). The modern smokers are business men and women, musicians, artists, cab drivers, social workers, lawyers, doctors, teachers, students, and just about anyone else you can think of. Hell, some marijuana smokers even grow up to be President! Imagine that. - esquire360, on 04/26/2009, -2/+82Hemp is sill illegal that is insane, why don't they at least legalize hemp? that should be first on the list.

There, I fixed that for ya. Whatever that was you were smoking before, probably could've blinded you. - scamper22, on 04/26/2009, -5/+78oh Canada,
Our home and native land.... - SavardAlex, on 04/26/2009, -4/+66I would just like to point out a very basic comparison between alcohol and MJ, in support of the legalisation of MJ of course.
Alcohol:
Obvious link to liver disease
No documented therapeutic use
Large effect on roadside accidents
Large correlation with inhibition reduction ---> encourages STD spreading because of the skipping out of preservatives AND facilitates domestic or public violence
Known and easily achievable lethal dosage
MJ:
Known medicinal and therapeutic uses ( anesthetic - stress reduction for Post Traumatic Stress - lessens muscular tension in muscular dystrophy patients, glaucoma, etc....)
No lethal dosage known
Antagonizes conflict and violence
Without even getting into the cost of fighting off MJ, including the $ and the space occupied in prisons alocated to drug offenses.
It just makes sense to me
but i guess im just stoned :P - nj10ii, on 04/26/2009, -0/+51I guess it means that we don't want to be taken seriously.
- inactive, on 04/26/2009, -8/+59It's high time for high time.
- Sulaco25, on 04/26/2009, -1/+38exactly. legalize it and it's one less thing the dealers can't profit on. then authorities would be able to put their time and tax payers money into stopping real criminal activity.

- CivicTV, on 08/14/2009, -1/+34Smart Heads? What does that even mean? Why should they hope it never gets legalized?
- inactive, on 04/26/2009, -2/+35we know how to read
- lumin8or, on 04/26/2009, -2/+33Some please provide me with a public prime-time televised debate weighing out the pro's and con's of legalization. This is one issue I feel that a person could lose in an honest debate.
That's where NORML should be allocating their donations. - mikebritton, on 04/26/2009, -4/+32The language that MSNBC uses in this article ("high time" so to speak) makes it less likely this cause will be taken seriously in the Bible Belt, where conservatives (and, frankly, nearly every christian) have negative, uninformed knee-jerk reactions toward this cause. A good editor would have recognized that.
- ihavetop, on 04/26/2009, -2/+25"It has been endorsed by a retired Orange County judge who used to be a federal prosecutor."
You are in no position of power anymore his opinion is no more worthless than my support for mj reform. Why didn't you take this stance while you could actually make a difference. - teamgwho, on 04/26/2009, -2/+25FTA: "While countries such as Holland and Switzerland have decriminalized marijuana, mental health experts say Americans are going to need a lot more convincing for public opinion to shift in that direction."
Fact: more people die from tobacco or alchohol use then from pot.
Fact: tobacco is far more addictive then pot is.
Fact: the government is involved in the distribution of, and makes a profit from, those two products.
Fact: in countries where pot was legalized, drug use declined
Myth: pot is not a gateway drug to harder stuff like coke and heroine
Whenever someone tells me they're against legalizing pot I ask them if they would support making tobacco and alchohol illegal again. They are far more addicting and cause far more deaths. If pot should be illegal, so should tobacco and alchohol. If tobacco and alchohol remain legal, then pot should be legal too.
Anything else is hypocritical. - Insolence, on 04/26/2009, -5/+27Do you reaaaaallly "get it" maaaaan?
- liberalelite, on 04/26/2009, -2/+21Why does every article about marijuana have to have some lame pun involved?
- Andrewticus, on 04/26/2009, -1/+19It's clear that BridgeTroll's never been around many business people, social workers, lawyers or doctors.
Then again, in my experience, coke is far more prevalent in these groups. - korvan504521, on 04/26/2009, -0/+17really? so. . . when was the last time you bought some illegal booze?
See, the thing about it, is that we'd manufacture the ***** out of weed if it was legal. Our farmers and packaging plants would leave the south american cartels looking like a bunch of amateurs. They'd go out of business because they wouldn't be able to compete.
The only reason they're the supplier right now is because its illegal. And thats also the only reason its expensive. Weed is a fricking plant that, excuse the pun, is a *weed*. Imagine the kind of production we'd get if it was being harvested by professional farming conglomerates. - ShavedBusch, on 04/26/2009, -0/+17Well, the government hasn't been able to control people privately cultivating plants and maintaining different strains all over the world, I don't know how they could prevent that from happening after legalization. Even if theoretically the government ***** with the quality and price, private (even illegal) industry can still compete.
- SavardAlex, on 04/26/2009, -2/+18Alcohol-Related Psychosis

Alcohol induced psychotic and mood disorders
http://www.psychtreatment.com/alcohol_related_psyc ...
I know i never said it was bulletproof but substances of all kinds can cause psychotic disorders, although typically hallucinogens are the ones known for it.
Im a nurse and i worked psych ward for an internship and i can tell you firsthand of the MJ induced schizophrenic episodes, but the disease is not very well understood, and although it could set off the disorder, there is no documented causal link. - kd1s, on 04/26/2009, -1/+17Apply the alcohol paradigm. You can buy it and it's taxed. If you want to grow your own, the seeds are taxed. If you want to buy, you walk into a store that has the tax pre-applied.
- ZincSaucier, on 04/26/2009, -2/+18why? marijuana gets you high. it's not like we all want it legalized so we can decorate our window sills with potted plants
- NikoKun, on 04/26/2009, -2/+17Since when did "Smart Heads" become a term describing the ignorant?
- Axemusica, on 04/26/2009, -2/+17it seems as though a big effort to make marijuana legal is being put forth. The fact that it is glamorized due to it being illegal is a big part of why teens get their hands on it so much. It's easier to get from their "dealers" than alcohol and it's the rebellious thing to do. I agree it would be less available to the younger public if it was no longer criticized, but endorsed.
- Valyn, on 04/26/2009, -1/+16That is exactly why they use that language. To sneak in their objectives...
- conebone69, on 04/26/2009, -6/+20how the ***** do they plan on regulating marijuana?
just decriminalize it. don't try to tax it or regulate it. ***** should be totally, 100% legal anyway. - DotGet, on 04/26/2009, -0/+14"Destroy" is a bit dramatic. That is, especially when the chronic smokers tend to be depressed in the first place. The people who are "destroyed" by cannabis would have been "destroyed" anyway. Have you ever smoked pot? The inebriation is pretty mild.
People are "destroyed" by heroin, meth, etc. People perpetuate depressed/nonactive behavior with the help of pot. - kevincredible, on 04/26/2009, -1/+15Myth: pot is a gateway drug to harder stuff like coke and heroine *
- tomg025, on 04/26/2009, -1/+15Would you ask Tom Petty that question?
- coolcrowe, on 04/26/2009, -0/+13nj10ii - agreed. It'd probably be a lot easier to legalize marijuana if most people arguing for it didn't act like a total pothead.
- teknomaker18, on 04/26/2009, -2/+15The prohibition failed. But no thanks to your kind.
- fluxion, on 04/26/2009, -1/+13yah, good luck getting support for that one.
taxed and regulated like cigarettes is the obvious starting point. maybe then you can throw your Boston Weed Party if the fact that it'll probably drop in price dramatically and YOU WONT GET ARRESTED FOR IT isnt already good enough for you. - dankestnater, on 04/26/2009, -2/+14hey look another dumbass on digg

- inactive, on 04/26/2009, -0/+12More people die from -water- than weed.
Know why that is?
Weed has never directly killed anybody. The only deaths from marijuana are from police or gang shootings. - Jlaugh, on 04/26/2009, -0/+11You mean the alcoholics in the bible belt who use prozac and viagra don't like drugs?
- Insolence, on 04/26/2009, -0/+11Marijuana is just as easy to grow as tomatoes, do you grow your own tomatoes? Brew your own beer? Grow your own mushrooms?
Have you ever had out-door grown marijuana without nutes? Compare that to indoor grown CO2 regulated, humidity controlled, perfectly nutritioned, and _loved_. They are two different ball parks. If you want good weed/beer/tomatoes, you pay for it. - AndrewMoyer, on 04/26/2009, -3/+14Because it ranked high...?
