flowersforhelenthomas.chipin.c… — We've begun a collection to buy some flowers for Helen Thomas, one of the few journalists left with any integrity. After her attempt at pinning down Perino on the subject of Bush admitting torture, we decided that the least we can do is say a big Thank You by way of flowers. It'd be great to see you diggers show you care too. Thank you!

    -Sad that it takes an 88 year old lady to get the questions out there, worse that they'd lie to her/ us.

When everyone else in that press room was clamoring for status and headway with the status quo, she went against it, and asked about the WMD's, asked about the rising death tolls, asked about lies that were uttered in hopes of distracting the public with easy to digest answers.

    People may think she's a pain in the ass, but really, who thinks that? The people who would rather speak to sheep instead of someone who refuses to go along with the herd. People who want easy answers and want to believe what they're given. Send her some flowers, and let her know that her resilience and work has not gone unnoticed, or unappreciated!

We should all follow her example - who knows, in the future, such 'extreme' questions might not be acceptable. Aids the turrists, dontcha know.

  • MadAce, on 04/24/2008, -3/+8So I watched that video with Helen Thomas asking that question. A very good and objective question. The kind of question many people would want her to ask. Also the kind of question that many (at least where I'm from, Western Europe) have come to expect from journalists.

    The answer she (and thus the American people) received was an insult to her (and the American people). An insult because somehow the spokeswoman assumed she wasn't mentally sound.

    Problem is that you don't even have to be mentally sound to understand the horrific consequences of such lies and the actions leading to the lies.

    All in all it's perfectly understandable that one would want to stimulate the commendable actions of Helen Thomas.

    But what is impossible to understand is the following.

    In only a few hours time people pitched in more than a thousand dollars for flowers. All the while every 5 seconds a child dies from hunger. Imagine that. Hundreds of children have died during those few hours.

    So I ask myself. Who needs those donations most? Helen Thomas (would would be quite happy with $ 100 worth of flowers I'm sure) or starving children?

    I'm not saying that this opportunity shouldn't be taken to send a message to the press. But I'm also saying that it might be interesting to not lose sight of reality.

    Helen Thomas will do her job. Some people won't even grow old enough to ever have a job.

    Priorities anyone?

      Had anyone expected so much money (and so fast) I think that more thought would have gone into donating in her honor, but this really just started out as a thread titled "Let's send Helen Thomas flowers for being the only reporter with the guts to ask tough questions at the White House."
