- cufford, on 05/03/2008, -24/+285Anybody with half a brain has known this was about oil. But at the same time people don't want to believe that our government is so cynical, so they prefer to want to believe the propaganda instead. To the detriment of their own best interests. We have no one to blame but ourselves for allowing the implosion of this country resulting from rapacious capitalism, and it's utter corruption of our government.
- Halbermunken, on 05/03/2008, -10/+147"The good Lord didn't see fit to put oil and gas only where there are democratically elected regimes friendly to the United States. Occasionally we have to operate in places where, all things considered, one would not normally choose to go. But, we go where the business is." Dick Cheney
Collateral Damage Conference, Cato Institute June 23, 1998

The U.S. has an enormous stake in the Persion Gulf because of oil Mar. 1994 Paul Wolfowitz
"The United States and the entire industrialized world have an enormous stake in the security of the Persian Gulf, not primarily in order to save a few dollars per gallon of gasoline but rather because a hostile regime in control of those resources could wreak untold damage on the world's economy, and could apply that wealth to purposes that would endanger peace globally." Wolfowitz concludes, "Given this permanent stake in the security of the Persian Gulf, the Gulf War provided an opportunity to base security on a foundation of credible commitment by the United States and its coalition partners."
Reagan on Defending American Oil Interests in the Gulf
Nov. 26, 1983
Reagan"...we should assign the highest priority to access arrangements which would facilitate the rapid deployment of those forces necessary to defend the critical oil facilities..."
Dick Cheney, USA Vice-President speaking in 1990:
"Whoever controls the flow of Persian Gulf oil has a stranglehold not only on our economy but also on the other countries of the world as well."
"OIL IS MUCH TOO IMPORTANT A COMMODITY TO BE LEFT IN THE HANDS OF THE ARABS."
Henry Kissinger
[Iraqis] know we own their country...It's a good thing, especially when there's a lot of oil out there we need.
~U.S. Brig. General William Looney
[Iraqis] know we own their country. We own their airspace... We dictate the way they live and talk. And that's what's great about America right now.
~U.S. Brig. General William Looney
"Along with Latin America, West Africa is expected to be one of the fastest-growing sources of oil and gas for the American market." ---->OFFICE OF VP DICK CHENEY,

"By 2010 we will need [a further] 50 million barrels a day. The Middle East, with two-thirds of the oil and the lowest cost, is still where the prize lies." - US Vice President Dick Cheney, then Halliburton chief executive officer, London, autumn 1999 - chipsngravy, on 05/03/2008, -22/+122Not like we didn't know it all along, but it shows incredible audacity that they can come right out and publicly admit it.
These power-crazed neocons need to be dealt with, and by dealt with I mean Nuremburg style. String 'em up like the war criminals they are. - CamperBob, on 05/03/2008, -1/+74More to the point, we could've paid Saddam $500/barrel for every drop of oil he could suck out of the desert, and we'd still have come out ahead.
We only needed some milk, but George bought the cow. - debunkthelies, on 05/03/2008, -7/+66Next stop in the oil dance, Iran.
- xtinamo, on 05/03/2008, -6/+54The American public as whole do carry some blame for electing leaders using superficial reasoning and being driven by greedy obsessions, yet I think the cause is in part born from specific elements of capitalism. The very idea that taking advantage of a situation for profit enables the most powerful to gain immense control over people of lesser income and education; and keep them there. Corporations and leaders will do ANYTHING to make a profit and/or remain in power which includes creating distractions and false ideas of happiness to sedate the population into submission. I grew up in a household that valued no moral courage or intellectual growth, but led me to believe that happiness was unquestioning faith in Christianity and collecting material things. I'm not exactly sure how I was able to discern that this was inherently flawed and my sisters were not, but I am confident that many others will do the same. There is hope, but until we drastically change how our society does business, I have doubts that this corruption will end.
- Dundasbro, on 05/03/2008, -5/+45More like he got into a fight trying to steal it, and then barely won so assaulted and raped the cow.
- protodon, on 05/03/2008, -8/+46I read : John McCain admits he's not even trying for the presidency anymore.
- pintomp3, on 05/03/2008, -3/+41saying it was about oil is an oversimplification. if it was just about oil, we wouldn't have stopped the conoco deal with iran back in 1995. iraq was perfect storm of interests.
the oil lobby of course wanted it. iraq has some of the largest reserves in the world and embargoes were preventing us access. we wanted turn iraq into a laissez fair free market for us to exploit.
the israel lobby wanted us to take out their rivals in the region,:iraq, iran, and syria. israel provided us with intel about the WMDs and the lobby kept pressure state side to ensure we go to war.
the military industrial complex and the burgeoning security industry wanted it. companies like lockhead and boeing have always profited greatly. thanks to hollowing out and privatization of pentagon, companies like haliburton and blackhawk were poised to make a killing on no bid contracts.
the iraq war has been in the making since before bush even got elected. a multitude of interests ensured that we were going to do it. 9/11 just gave us the prefect excuse. pinning it only on war ignores the other players in this mess. - L3on, on 05/03/2008, -5/+36'BEWARE OF THE MILITARY INDUSTRIAL COMPLEX' - Dwight D. Eisenhower
watch if you don't know what I'm talking about: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8y06NSBBRtY - saltinekracka20, on 05/03/2008, -5/+32Well? Seriously, why did you think anyone cares about the Middle East? They're sitting on the gold mind that drives the planet. No freaking crap, it's about oil.
- peestandingup, on 05/03/2008, -3/+30Screw that, I've done all I can as an individual. I recycle, I drive fuel efficient cars & everything I buy I am conscious to how it effects others & the environment. I'm even buying a diesel car & gonna install a grease kit on it so I can power it off used veggie oil. So, dont tell me I'm to blame for this.
I blame the brain-dead mother ***** who voted for this war AND the people who voted for Bush's ass not once but TWICE. First time is forgivable because we didn't know he was crazy & it was before 9/11, but the second time not so much. That takes a special kind of stupid. - TrevaLVF, on 05/03/2008, -7/+32Neo-conservative is what they called themselves. Their policies are anything, but conservative. They borrow and spend like there's no tomorrow, give the rich a free ride by lifting the tax burden on the rich, shifting it to the poor and middle class, continuing the bi-partisan Clinton-era down-size for profit and job outsourcing policies that hurt middle-class and low-income Americans. They expanded the size of government, added new bureaucratic arms of the government, eroded civil liberties to increase the power of the ever-growing government. They permitted their corporate cronies to gouge the treasury. Their national defense policies are a far cry from what a truly wise fiscal conservative would advocate. So is their liberal (in this case, free-wheeling) use of our military forces and weapons involved in their free-wheeling foreign war policies.

- phunlee, on 05/03/2008, -2/+23I'm afraid the American public as a whole carry ALL of the blame. There was never any point in recent history where clear facts were not available to make clear decisions at the polls.

- alexm1309, on 05/03/2008, -1/+20mccain is trolling all of you.
- normlsparky, on 05/03/2008, -3/+22it amazes me that the american public ridicules the thought of investing in alternative sources of energy. do any of you actually think that oil will last forever? at some point we will be forced to find alternatives. the trillions of dollars we have spent on this war alone could have been invested in research and development of technology that would have freed us from dependence on foreign oil. america is a resourceful and innovative country. if anyone can develop alternatives, we can. it is just a matter of political will and funding. we may be driving cars powered by the hydrogen extracted from water or some other means yet.
- quesi, on 05/03/2008, -1/+20true, true... but you left out the Israel connections, PNAC, 9/11, and about 3Trillion reported missing from DoD between 2001-2004 (Dov Zakheim)

- chazuk, on 05/03/2008, -0/+16Surely its a gold mine? Unless there is a big golden mind sitting below the Middle East....
- Dundasbro, on 05/03/2008, -0/+16Won the cow, but found out that every time he tried to milk it it kicks him in the nuts and runs away for a little while. He can get milk, but he doesn't really get much, its painful and not really worth it in retrospect.
- happyseamonster, on 05/03/2008, -7/+22Anybody who thinks it wasn't fo oil control is an idiot. Do we really need them to admit it for it to be true? The whole ***** world knows it. "War is business".
- simg, on 05/03/2008, -4/+19do you have any idea what you're saying ?
hundreds of thousands of people have been killed and millions more have had their lives shattered.
all so that you can have cheaper gas prices ?? you *should* be ashamed. - Spudster, on 05/03/2008, -1/+16Pax Americana in action. Look up an organization called the Project for a New American Century. They had plans for an invasion of Iraq years before 9/11 ever happened and it all was on the grounds of securing "American interests" (Oil definitely being one of those interests.) Many neocons signed declarations endorsing invasions of Iraq in the late 90's, including Vice President Cheney. I should mention that this is not baseless conspiracy theory crap either. Check it out:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Project_for_a_new_ame ... - twisterrust, on 05/03/2008, -1/+16I think you are, by far, the stupidest person on digg. You think death of millions is OK as long as it gets you free oil?
I think I am out of words to describe the depth of your ignorance - inactive, on 05/03/2008, -3/+18Because you didn't have to be in charge of it to be one of the leading voices justifying it.

- Shaman760, on 05/03/2008, -1/+15Really? No *****! I thought we were there to win the hearts and minds of Iraqi citizens.
- spacedog800, on 05/03/2008, -0/+14Euro. True, Iraq did the same shortly before our war effort there. I saw an article that the State Dept is drafting an ultimatum for Iran that include military strike. With Petraeus taking over as CENTCOM commander soon expect it. Its the next logical progression. I'm in Baghdad right now and a lot of people think we came here solely to go to iran.
I agree for the need of OIL but these neocons don't know what the hell they are doing. They haven't had one of their stupid plans actually succeed. - verge, on 05/03/2008, -3/+17Um. Matthews IS MSM... AND is one of the crew that needs to move on from Rev. Wright.
- ShivaVishnu, on 05/03/2008, -14/+27McCain hasn't done what he needs to do to be a viable candidate, that would be to shed the NEOCONs and the Religious Right.
OIL has been known for years by half of America to be the reason for this war. Profits for the bush/cheney group of War profiteers. - ravage86, on 05/03/2008, -4/+17It's got a fiberglass air cooled engine and it runs on water man!

- Enasni1212, on 05/03/2008, -2/+14More like won handily, but nearly killed the cow during the fight.
- HappyScrappy, on 05/03/2008, -3/+14Long time ago, Cheney said "this war will pay for itself". There was only one way Iraq was going to pay for our invasion, and that is by taking at least some of the oil profits from Iraq.
So it's not like this cat wasn't let out of the bag a long time ago. - inactive, on 05/03/2008, -1/+12Translation: at least it was dusky mohameddans who were getting killed and not white folks.
- Spudster, on 05/03/2008, -1/+12"What he's saying is that since we're so dependent on oil we have to make sure the region is stable and delivers a steady supply of oil."
How is what you said any different? All you did was justify invading a country for oil by prettying up the term "invade" with "stabilizing." - DrumDog2112, on 05/03/2008, -0/+10It's unfortunate that you're absolutely correct in your assertion: Iran is next in line.
- Wetzilla, on 05/03/2008, -2/+12More like won handily, but blew the cow up during the fight.
- AnokK, on 05/03/2008, -1/+11We care so little about Africa because Africa has nothing of value we want to take. We care a great deal about South America however, and have had our hands in that private contractor cookie jar for quite some time now. The peace in Africa has nothing to do with a stable, steady flow of oil from the middle East to the US. What a strange correlation to make.
- Grantismo, on 05/03/2008, -2/+12That's why it was originally called Operation Iraqi Liberation
- xtinamo, on 05/03/2008, -1/+11Despite the facts being present, I believe that our society has faced a massive manipulation of the truth and the creation of irrelevant priorities that the American people have to come to embrace either emotionally or spiritually, not rationally.
Do we entirely blame the German people for Hitler? Of course they did share some responsibility for accepting the social darwinistic racism that was exercised upon by their government and for allowing their personal freedoms to be taken over by fascism(they did experience a short democratic period before the control of the NSDAP). Yet what they wanted most was security and superiority which was something that nazism provided. I am not trying to create excuses for either Americans or early 20th century Germans. I just believe that these situations of insecurity and misplaced priorities have been used by those in power in order to maintain their control and accumulate their wealth. They need poverty, ignorance, and distractions to preserve their status and in turn help to create, facilitate, and force these upon those who can be taken advantage of. - TrevaLVF, on 05/03/2008, -1/+10I left out a lot of things. I'm trying to curb my tendency include so much, you'd have to keep scrolling to either read it all, or to get to the next comment. Thanks for adding to the list.
- normlsparky, on 05/03/2008, -1/+10"the difference between stupidity and genius is that genius has its limits." you are living proof that this statement is true. your stupidity is indeed limitless. by your logic, we should destroy any environment or country that has oil. claiming that the usa owns oil in other countries or has some right to it is ignorant. we don't. the trillions of dollars we have wasted on this war would have gone a long way if it were invested in research and development of alternative energy options. instead we are left with massive debt and a dwindling supply of increasingly expensive oil. alternatives must be obtained eventually. oil will not last forever.
- jn1167, on 05/03/2008, -3/+12Huh? Oil? Who said something about oil, bitch you cooking?
