- voxlisa999, on 09/04/2008, -25/+251I totally agree. Thank you Mr. Klein for telling the TRUTH. If more MSM outlets told the truth instead of parroting Talking Points perhaps we could have a healthy debate in this country. The RNC last night was full of mocking and personal attacks, not to mention the repeated lies. I can't get over the lies. No, not distortions or stretching the truth- but factual lies. Not this time. Not this year.
- tcbishop12, on 09/04/2008, -17/+162FTA: Catholic Democrats is expressing surprise and shock that Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin's acceptance speech tonight mocked her opponent's work in the 1980s for the Catholic Campaign for Human Development. She belittled Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama's experience as a community organizer in Catholic parishes on the South Side of Chicago, work he undertook instead of pursuing a lucrative career on Wall Street. In her acceptance speech, Ms. Palin said, "I guess a small-town mayor is sort of like a community organizer, except that you have actual responsibilities." Community organizing is at the heart of Catholic Social Teaching to end poverty and promote social justice.
Klein writes: So here is what Giuliani and Palin didn't know: Obama was working for a group of churches that were concerned about their parishioners, many of whom had been laid off when the steel mills closed on the south side of Chicago. They hired Obama to help those stunned people recover and get the services they needed--job training, help with housing and so forth--from the local government. It was, dare I say it, the Lord's work--the sort of mission Jesus preached (as opposed to the war in Iraq, which Palin described as a "task from God.")
This is what Palin and Giuliani were mocking. They were making fun of a young man's decision "to serve a cause greater than himself," in the words of John McCain. They were, therefore, mocking one of their candidate's favorite messages. Obama served the poor for three years, then went to law school. To describe this service--the first thing he did out of college, the sort of service every college-educated American should perform, in some form or other--as anything other than noble is cheap and tawdry and cynical in the extreme.
Perhaps La Pasionaria of the Northern Slope didn't know this when she read the words they gave her. But Giuliani--a profoundly lapsed Catholic, who must have met more than a few religious folk toiling in the inner cities--should have known. ("I don't even know what that is," he sneered.")
What a shameful performance.
Boo-hiss! - Pinyont, on 09/04/2008, -14/+144Community organizing is the heart of America helping others at grassroots level! How dare she discount that work! Insults like the ones we saw last night make the Republicans look even more callous!
I am now a Former Republican. It will be a cold day in Hell before they will ever get my vote again! - alapoet, on 09/04/2008, -14/+108Don't you understand?
We're only truly "helping people" when we bomb and shoot (or at least arrest and torture) them first. You folks need to the neo-con "narrative" more closely. - elf202, on 09/04/2008, -7/+91It's been said already somewhere: Mrs Palin (and Mr Giulliani) need to be reminded that Jesus was a community organizer and Pontius Pilate was a governor.
- mattjlew, on 09/04/2008, -12/+86that is just sad. Giuliani is a catholic. he should be ashamed of himself. Barack didn't do that worked to be laughed at.
- inactive, on 09/04/2008, -11/+79Mr. 9/11 is still a dick! Palin will get her ass handed to her as soon people start asking questions
- johnnr2, on 09/04/2008, -16/+84It's only worthy of admiration if its an ultra-right wing fundamentalist Xian doing the work. Don't you get it? :-/
- cizzymac, on 09/04/2008, -11/+76So much for "compassionate conservatism". What a joke.
It's got to be quite a sight to see so many factually impaired people spout the technicolor yawn one after the other.
I don't have the stomach to watch it. I'll end up throwing a shoe through my television. - JohnnyMarr, on 09/05/2008, -6/+64Jon Stewart just commented on this on The Daily Show. He pointed out the irony of the comments they made while most people in the audience held signs that said "Service."
Republicans are fail. - bmaggiemay, on 09/04/2008, -11/+61People like Rudy Giuluani and Joe Liebermann couldn't get elected to the board of the local PTA. They are basically done in politics and that's why Johnny Bad Bay McCain sent them on stage to attack Senator Obama. This entire convention the compassionate Republicans failed to bring one single message of hope or change to the American people......
- jadex, on 09/04/2008, -0/+50Giuliani is a total ass
- chourobin, on 09/05/2008, -4/+52As someone said here, Palin is making fun of Obama as a community organizer when he was 24 YEARS OLD. Guess what PALIN was doing when she was 24, trying to win beauty pageants and getting KNOCKED UP.
- CannedMango, on 09/05/2008, -0/+37Giuliani took care of the homeless by shoving them aside and pretending they didn't exist. The man truly has a heart of gold.
- inactive, on 09/05/2008, -9/+46While Giuliani spouted BS last night, I comforted myself with the memory of Ron Paul completely owning him on national security during the debates.
- dinot, on 09/04/2008, -7/+40LOL. It's funny seeing you republican loonies run out of ammo.
- Schmapdi, on 09/05/2008, -1/+28He really is a slimy human being - worse than most politicians.
- acroyear2, on 09/05/2008, -4/+31One of The comments from the TIME article:
"is the GOP really taking the position that private citizens should NOT take the initiative to help their communities, and instead let the government do it?
Or is their position that nobody should help the poor and disadvantaged, and we should just let them all starve or freeze???" - Echota, on 01/05/2009, -16/+43McCains an elitist.
Obama/ Bidnen 08! - TigerStar337, on 09/05/2008, -10/+37Like Barack says, Republicans take pride in being ignorant.
Obama/Biden '08 - omegared, on 09/05/2008, -4/+30what about her talk about the bridge to no where, that she supported and now she says she doesn't anymore? Why is she liying about that?
What about the debt she add to the town she was mayor? Is that not true?
It takes more than being a POW, and lying to be a president or a VP darlin'. - pintomp3, on 09/05/2008, -1/+26maybe we shouldn't have put saddam in place then.
- GrownupPhan, on 09/05/2008, -6/+31Well, seeing as Sarah Palin and her husband are chummy with people who want to seceed from America, I guess we shouldn't be surprised when she mocks things that are at the heart of how real Americans see what is admirable. What a miserable loser she is. I already knew Rudy was an incredible tool, but she's even worse.
- lopla, on 09/05/2008, -3/+28This is one of the most depressing times in American history. I've never been so disgusted at so many of my fellow countrymen. It is sick, shameful, shocking and without excuse. God help us.
- chrissku, on 09/05/2008, -6/+31That comment is going to come back and bite Palin for years to come. Making fun of Barack for helping his community while for working for pennies trying to raise a family. I'm proud of him.
- drenei, on 09/05/2008, -3/+27really? read this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Community_organizing
Notable community organizers:
- Cesar Chavez
- Martin Luther King, Jr.
- John W. Gardner
- Jane Addams
and if you're talk about Obama's community organizing specifically being corrupt and self serving, please cite some sort of evidence. - solistus, on 09/05/2008, -3/+27That isn't a factual lie, just an obvious lack of understanding.
http://pewresearch.org/pubs/707/present-votes-illi ...
The Pew Research Center (that left-wing rag!) explains quite effectively why this is a non-issue blown up by ignorant people. "Present" votes are common in Illinois and built into the State Congress' rules and voting structure. It's like voting "no with explanation" - it counts as a vote against a bill in the final tally but allows the Congressperson to explain a specific concern or objection rather than signal opposition to the bill overall. - mgill3, on 09/05/2008, -6/+29The DNC was clearly more moving and inspirational.
- FaceDog, on 09/05/2008, -3/+25Other community organizers:
Martin Luther King Jr.
Gandhi
Cesar Chavez
Moses
The Founding Fathers of the United States
... - JekJob, on 09/04/2008, -18/+39This is so true. What has McCain done with his life? Nothing. And don't throw out some crap about him "serving the country" and being a POW. Obama made the noble decision to help people directly. McCain had the chance to do that in public office but failed miserably.
- bsmeteronhigh2, on 09/05/2008, -8/+28When I heard Giulliani spout how the president is elected by "you the people" I was amazed that he had never heard of the electoral college. But I digress.. He also seemed to think that being the mayor of a small town of 6,000 was on par with his experience of being the mayor of New York. Silly, silly man. But then, sometimes a guy will say anything if he thinks he even has a impossilby remote chance of getting laid. That is the true power of the P--alin! Giulliani is an embarrassment to rational thinking men everywhere.
- lhbaker, on 09/05/2008, -5/+25John McCain looked just like Bob Dole tonight. I suspect he'll look just like Bob Dole on election day, as well. After that comes the Viagra commercials, in which I'm sure Palin will be featured.
- dn11, on 09/05/2008, -2/+22faith based social programs are only worthy if they are carried out by white republicans it seems.
- mytealjacket, on 09/05/2008, -3/+23 To quote someone more eloquent than myself, cvcobb01 writes:
"On the face of it, it's a pretty weird repetitive theme. Obama's done lots of stuff -- teaching, state legislature, writing books, etc. -- but "community organizer" seems like an odd one to fixate on. The words themselves have generally positive connotations, particularly that first one: everybody is in favor of "community".
"Which is exactly the point, I think. Used the way the GOP speakers used the words tonight (i.e. with a sneer), community = ghetto and organizer = activist.
"It essentially was a coded way of pointing out Obama's work in, with and for the black community (see? even I'm doing it) on the South Side of Chicago.
...
"They were trying to put Obama back on the same level as Jesse Jackson -- i.e., the black protest candidate -- and mocking him for it.
"Which sort of leads me to my real point about all of this: The Republicans are treating the public like we're stupid. Just look at the last couple of days -- Palin thinks we won't figure out she's lying about the Bridge to Nowhere. Hasn't she heard of google and youtube? McCain wants to pretend that the governor of Alaska commands the state's National Guard in matters of national security. Wrong -- he just failed his first test as CinC, namely knowing what forces he would have under his command.
"And so on, with so many other examples. The Republicans are treating this election like a joke, and Americans like rubes.
"The only line of defense we used to have was the factfinding and truthtelling of the MSM, and Iraq has shown us all how well that works in our favor. Now we have the blogosphere too, still in its infancy. So I don't fear as much that the truth won't eventually get out.
"What I do fear is that people in your position, Joe, will tut-tut and poo-poo that truth (a la Carney and the corruption of the Justice Department) until its too late to do anything about it."
Posted by cvcobb01 - TheMachine1, on 09/05/2008, -5/+25I still remember Giuliani as soon as he left office got a job as a lobbyist for the pharmaceutical industry opposing the importation of prescription drugs into the US.
Screwing consumers to protect big business. - jdenzer, on 09/05/2008, -3/+21"I met a guy once who was a professional clown"
How? By looking in the mirror? - wonkavsn, on 09/05/2008, -6/+24I thought, in particular, that Giuliani's speech was an absolute abomination. He's nothing but a desperate, pathetic, loud moron.
I honestly might as well have just watched wrestling. - mnpilot, on 09/05/2008, -5/+22Not bad compared to tonight's speech. It was painful to watch. It was funny at the start then it just got sad. They are a room full of sheep and have no clue.....
- FaceDog, on 09/05/2008, -1/+18Nobody said he wasn't serving the community. In fact Obama, Biden and most of "liberal America" go out of their way to give him credit and thanks. The only reason this discussion is taking place is that Republicans at the RNC belittled Obama's work as a community organizer. Nobody is belittling McCain’s POW experience. Where is the double slandered you write about?
If you are looking for a double standard look at the attack on John Kerry's service to this country.
Think before you type. - acroyear2, on 09/05/2008, -1/+18Remember one of the excuses for this war? Saving the Iraqis from the tyrant? Do you know how many innocent Iraqis have died in this war? Is it mentioned by the MSM? Is it mentioned by McCain? Bush? Wouldn't it seem like we failed at "saving Iraqis" if 100k+ have died since the invasion? Or let me guess, we aren't responsible because it was sectarian violence and we had nothing to do with stirring that hornet's nest? Get out of your neo-con horse *****.
- blinker265, on 09/05/2008, -6/+22giuliani is just a bitter old douche who has nothing going for him except 9/11. he (and palin) should just keep their mouths shut on things they dont know
- pintomp3, on 09/05/2008, -1/+17it's sad that the idiots in the crowd went for giulani's soundbite instead of paul's breakdown of history. bunch of war-mongering sheep.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AD7dnFDdwu0 - liquisoft, on 09/05/2008, -3/+19Hah hah! He's just an all around good guy who likes to serve others! Laugh and point, everyone!
- jdenzer, on 09/05/2008, -2/+17Let's not forget that she didn't actually sell the jet on Ebay. She had to use a private broker and it sold at 1/2 million $ loss.
- thegrantman, on 09/05/2008, -7/+22McCain/Palin has the same speechwriters, policies and campaign contributors as Bush/Cheney.Let's just call it Bush 3.0.
- Taiyoryu, on 09/05/2008, -3/+18Well just finished listening to McCain's speech. It's interesting to contrast that Obama put service before self as soon as he graduated whereas it took extenuating circumstances (being a POW) for McCain to come to the same conclusion.
- amagiri, on 09/05/2008, -2/+17I caught only a little of his speech on tv, but I really didn't like the way Giuliani said something like, "And then you have a resume that says 'community organizer,'" and then chuckled at his own joke while the crowd laughed. Maybe I just dislike candidate-bashing in general.
- h0tpot, on 09/05/2008, -6/+20"the attack on Barack Obama's service as a community organizer by the odious Rudy Giuliani" ; Like I do with most people from NYC, I typically ignore anything Giuliani has to say.
- duncanm, on 09/05/2008, -1/+15Ya. Can't you imagine the welcome that Sarah Palin will receive when she ventures into the neighbourhoods of South Chicago... or other projects and/or depressed neighborhoods in other major cities throughout the US for the first time? Set her loose in LA, or DC... or Atlanta... or... wherever for a day and see how she'll survive and/or cope with reality. Her head will be spinning so fast, she won't even begin to know how to start organizing anything other than "how the hell to I get back home?".
Coming from small town Alaska, she's in for a major shock. Of course, what I'm really driving at is how she's so naive... and she honestly hasn't a clue how her small town experience has NOT prepped her for the needs of the majority of Americans. She is horribly out-of-touch with their very real needs of the MAJORITY of Americans... today.
She blasted Obama for his "bitter" remark... and while she was delivering it... all I could think of was... "man, this chick is bitter!" Hey, don't get me wrong. I'm sure she's a good Governor for Alaska. But, I don't think she's close to being ready to be VP of the USA. Not this year. - schreinon, on 09/05/2008, -9/+22Thank you again, Joe Klein, for remaining just about the only objective journalist left out there!
