- unklefudd, on 10/12/2007, -3/+23Very thoughtful editorial from a very intelligent man.
- BonzaiEvilJoker, on 10/12/2007, -2/+21This remind me of a nice quote I heard somewhere ... "Beware he who would deny you access to information, for in his heart he dreams himself your master."
antoniojvr, are you such a acoward that you'll give up all your freedoms for protection against "terrorists"? I guess, in that case, they've already won. They've managed to achieve their purpose : spread "terror". - unklefudd, on 10/12/2007, -4/+23He is not insane, only concerned over the most secretive government in America's history. We have our personal privacy rights shrinking daily while the goverment just classifies (or declassfies) whatever they want for political ends--think ATT case and Valerie Plame.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+22The first things fascists do is take away your ability to question their authority.
- mscf, on 10/12/2007, -5/+21Oversight of our government is the only means of making informed decisions about its leadership. If this inadvertently gives aid to our enemies, then so be it - this is the price of freedom.
- ubuntumatthew, on 10/12/2007, -5/+21Those who desire to give up freedom in order to gain security will not have, nor do they deserve, either one.
-Ben Franklin - unklefudd, on 10/12/2007, -5/+20Jimmy Carter may not have been a good leader, but he is a great humanist. He has done far more for humanity than either Patton or Reagan.
@otherland
Your churlish epithets always expose you for what you are. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15@otherland: can't defeat what argument? You've not posited an argument and, in fact, you were the first with the "ad hominem attacks".
If you can't say something nice, then don't post here. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+17one would think the majority of people on digg (although I admit I have not seen the demographics...) weren't even alive during the Carter administration. Meanwhile we have lived through 20 years of republican leadership, and bill clinton.
"The who wins, writes the history books " I don't see how anyone who was not alive during the Carter administration has a right to attack his character or ability as a president. I know I certainly don't. I know Jimmy Carter had to make some tough decisions, and in some ways was thrown into situations that had very little to do with his ability as president. Then again maybe he was a total f*up.
But chances are you don't know. WHat we do know, is here in the 21st century, he is one of our smartest elder statesman, and a true human being. All you carter-hatahs, you are of small, infinitesimal minds.
Jimmy Carter is an amazing humanist and an ex-president of one of the greatest countries on the planet. You all are just posting on digg. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14@Otherland: Metrosexual libs hating guns?
Better to hate guns than people... but since I don't define my sexuality by my trendiness, live in a major urban center, with a nice apartment and no guns on the premesis, I hate to inform you that many "liberals" are republicans, many "conservatives" are democrats, and that your terminology is a smokescreen for an altogether weak position. So by definition, on behalf of all HETERO-sexual, liberal, card carrying NRA members voting for whoever they believe will actually protect your liberty to be a *****, and at the risk of devolving your argument into something along the lines of a Bush Administration sound-bite- You are an idiot. - proton, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14@otherland: No, we just get sick of whiney bitches willing to give up Everything to defeat the dark skinned people and desperately clinging to power.
- unklefudd, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13"You had Clinton in for 8 years so whatever happened to Universal Health Care that Hillary was to head up?"
People like you ensured that it would fail. Hope you enjoy your next medical bill. - eqisow, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13"Carter was one of the worst Presidents the US ever had. He is the epitome of the one world socialist that abound now days. He was a coward and always choose to put the American People second behind his elitist concepts on how the world should be."
Despite the extreme spin you put on that description, you've pretty much just described an excellent President. Jimmy Carter is one of the best presidents we've ever had. He's also *the* best ex-president. - proton, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12That reminds me of someone else who screwed things up. Oh wait he's still doing it.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12I also remember when he was in office and I know that then the United States was the largest creditor nation on the planet.
Now the United States is the largest debtor nation on the planet and everyone's indivividual share of the national debt is over $29,177.21. (http://www.uwsa.com/uwsa-usdebt.html)
Oh yeah, gas was actually cheaper back then.
Reagan, 2 Bushes, and Clinton have left my children to pay off their spending. - williamdyer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11Remember: The guns are not there to hunt ducks. They are the emergency brake for when the system runs downhill toward fascism.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10It was a ugly time for the country, but how much of that was really the Carter administration's fault?
I don't ask rhetorically, but inquisitively as I've never found any information on his cupability that wasn't obviously biased.
I'd even be interested in your response, if it weren't for your obvious bias...
Where do you get the idea the "left" (read: democrats), knows whats best for you? Is that what the "right" (read: republicans) told you to believe?
Its really amazing to watch "democracy" (read: a republic) crumble under the polarization of its own political machinations. I'm continually amazed at the black and white outlook on politics in America, when the shades of city, state and federal politics is anything but. - akilleen, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10"How come libs trampled all over our 2nd amendment right for "security"? That's the first thing facist societies do, they take away the guns."
You know, even though you are foaming at the mouth "right wing" or whatever, I still modded you up because I agree with you on this point. You can't pick and choose what parts of the constitution you want to protect.
If you didn't foam at the mouth so much, people would probably take you a little more seriously. However, like most people on the "left" or "right", all you can do is attack the other side. Let's face it, both sides are full of *****, and we all need to start using our brains instead of repeating rhetoric leftist/rightist talk show hosts spew. - Rince, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11A nation that prides itself as a beacon of liberty can only stand out as a guiding light for other nations by demonstrating that liberty itself. Through showing that with liberty and openness a country can withstand the turmoils of crisis, war, and other storms, it does not give, but IS the ultimate argument in favor of liberty and openness.
Not in the good times, but in the bad will we know how strong the foundations are. - unklefudd, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10No worries about otherland. He just learned a new phrase today (ad hominem) from another dugg story and he's all excited to use it where ever he can.
- vuzman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7You are so wrong.
Truman, Ike, Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon and Carter wiped out most of the World War II debt. Clinton did his part too. Reagan and the two Bushes are the big sinners when it comes to the US national debt.
Get your facts straight: http://zfacts.com/p/318.html - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Being such a massive debtor nation poses a serious threat when so much of the debt is held by China and its billion-man army. The Fed has no choice but to pay close attention to what China's needs are.
Add that to the President's need to pay close attention to what the Saudi's are doing and true independence seems far, far away.
$29,184.25 and counting... - artman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7A couple of points on Carter...
Ratification of the Panama Canal Treaty.
Then George H. W. Bush invaded to get it back under the pretext that a 2-bit dictator was going to take over the world. The dress rehearsal for Iraq War I and II.
Mediated the Peace settlement between Egypt and Israel, ending a 31-year state of war between the Jewish state and its largest Arab neighbor and laying the groundwork for all subsequent Middle East peace negotiations.
We all know where that has gone...Democrats try to mend fences and Republicans either build walls or blow them up.
@zeromous I don't think that Dick and Don started then. They were prominent during the Ford Administration. Many of the Neoconservatives were incensed when Nixon/Kissinger went to China and Russia seeking trade and arms reduction. See "The Power of Nightmares" - DangerStevens, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6@antoniojvr
"If tyranny comes to America, it will be in the guise of a foreign threat" - Alexander Hamilton
the Founding Fathers knew that the only way to take away the liberty that so defines America would be to scare the citizenry into believing that the governing body was their only salvation from some unkown horror.
I think Jon Stewart said it best on his first show after 9-11 when he said that we'd already won because the Terrorists had failed to terrify us. Turns out our own government can be even better at instilling terror. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Now your share of the debt is: $29,179.01.
- jchalos, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6as opposed to the proud feelings everyone has for that office now?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6@williamdyer
I'm not sure I'm the one who needs reminding...I always thought it was implicit in the constitution. But then again, you and I are obviously literate :) Perhaps though, you meant "tyranny", appearing in many forms including but not specifically facism. - DangerStevens, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4@pabster
The reason Carter said that we sometimes need to negotiate with terrorists is because terrorism is a TACTIC, not a group or even an ideology. That means that the lines are blurred between terrorist and non and we need to have a flexible policy that will be able to adapt to the needs of individual situations. I think it's brilliant. - deesnutz, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Amen to that Artman! Democrats fix and make better. While the Republicans divide and destroy. President Jimmy Carter is a great man. No other President after their exiting the White House has done more to help his fellow American or human being for that matter. Carter got blamed for the Iran Hostage situation and it's handling. But it pales in comparison to George W. Bush's Iraq debacle.
Today, we celebrate America's Independence. May we celebrate America's great men (such as President Jimmy Carter) who have helped his country. May we remember and honor our troops who are put in harms way. And get rid of those who are creating more harm than good to the country and it's people. With that said, let's bring home back the troops and impeach George W. Bush.

http://www.democratgiftshop.com/cgi-bin/store/store.cgi/571511948/liberal_shop/1174718 - DCMacHead, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Jimmy Carter is the worst President our country ever had. On his watch, I remember wearing yellow ribbons to support the hostages in Iran. Under Reagan, it would have been an act of war. Under Carter, a liberal pussy, we were all victims. I remember sitting in gas lines for hours on end. I find it fascinating that under Bush, he's come out of the woodwork after living in hiding for the past 25 or so years--a lot of the folks in the media today are eager to use the "Former President" title to advance their argument when it should be "Worst President".
- unklefudd, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4pabbies frothing at the mouth again.
- DangerStevens, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4@otherland
Keep in mind that the initial intent of the 2nd amendment was to keep the citizenry armed against their own government as much as it was to protect against something foreign. So when you interpret this as an amendment that gaurantees security you should know that it also allows us to resist that 'security'. - unklefudd, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6hahahaha...my nic is with 2 d's pabbie ol' boy, like in Elmer.
FUD is what gets you neocons elected. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4@overthrowbush
I always thought so....but thank you for presenting some facts to back that up.
Now my question is....is it better to be the worlds lender or borrower? Depends on what you intend to do with your economy..... the current and past administrations are many things, but economically inept is not one of them.
Voters usually tend to view international economics in micro-terms, whereas one could argue, a macro-persepective is more appropriate. Perhaps being a debtor nation to some of your rivals has its economic and political advantages.
For instance, It's no coincidence, Donald Rumsfeld and Dick Cheney were part of the Nixon administration that "opened up the east" opening the floodgates to sell boat loads of debt to the Japanese and Chinese governements. Don and Dick are probably two of the most cunning political entities in positions of power today (not to say I approve of them necessarily). God, I hope i am giving them too much credit :) I'm just trying to keep an open mind. - rohcky, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It amazes me that the one US president who truly believed in world peace is considered the worst president in history and labeled a coward.
You can't make friends and allies through force. Jimmy Carter knew that. - Athyrius, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Hysterical how all these 'men' in office - and by extension all americans (males anyway) are supposed to be so 'cowboy tough' and 'military macho' yet are expected to hide weeping under thier beds awaiting the big, bad terrorists to show up.
Grow some cajones and show the bravery it takes to handle the risks inherent in freedom as opposed to living in a safely fascist nation full of pansy-ass pisspots who need to be protected at every turn; including censoring of information and big-brother tracking of every movement.
Are you men or mice? Thats the real question here. - robman30, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3it is needed for freedom but the secrecy mongers don't want freedom they want total info awareness
- ElliottB, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2 Hell, when he said we would not fight on foreign soil against communism, two countries were invaded by Russia and Cuba. He stuck it to them by not going to the Olympics.
Carter disassembled the CIA which has helped other countries manipulate our media and slip our research out of the country into their back pockets. China, for example, continually is attempting to steal our top secret concepts. For the most part, we've captured their men.
Just watch out comments will be hidden because of our truths. - unklefudd, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3 http://www.findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m2633/is_4_18/ai_n8685187
See what being under Republican fiscal conservatism gets you. Yay.... - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3artman, thank you for your insight. I do still believe they were high up in the administration in the Nixon years, but their politics and level of influence at the time is certainly debateable as you point out. I will look into your book suggestion, as I've definately been eager to read the title and come to my own conclusions..
Thanks again! - deepsub, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"So when you interpret this as an amendment that gaurantees security you should know that it also allows us to resist that 'security'."
So what you're saying is that otherland, without knowing it, overwhelmingly supports the ammendment that will ultimately be needed to overthrow Bush and his thugs?
Brilliant! - Corrosionx, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Wow you lefties and righties are really gonna eat each other up.
That would leave libertarians in charge. Woohoo! - williamdyer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You are correct, but the problem we have today, where a surveillance state conspires with big business to wire our lives for observation and control is a specific form of tyranny: fascism.
