- TrevorBradley, on 03/26/2008, -4/+41You misspelled "white" in the quotation marks there. /sarcasm
Honestly I can't see any other way to interpret this article title. The subsurface racism that permeates American culture is disturbing. I'm disturbed how much it's discussed on US TV, either in couched words like this, or even openly. As an outside observer (Canadian) all I can think of is that you folks to the south still have a lot of issues to work out. - martalli, on 03/26/2008, -1/+26The article subtly raises the main issue here: generational politics. The article just barely mentions this, but makes it clear that the younger generations are "in a different universe".
Older generations largely support Clinton, for many reasons. however, subtle racism is no small part here, played up by the Muslim emails, endless playing of the severely clipped Wright sermon, and so on. Younger generations, really 40's and younger, are much less influenced by this racism and innuendo. In fact, I think they have a much more negative impression of Clinton for all of her dirty tricks. The older generation thinks these dirty tricks are par for the course, the younger generations see them for what they are: unproductive and useless tools. - drizzlelicious, on 03/26/2008, -5/+30Blacks are as american as whites, asians, hispanics and indians, though they are probably trumped by native americans
- martalli, on 03/26/2008, -0/+17Barack is not just black, or just white. This is, in fact, what makes him quite typically American. However, in Hillary's generation this would have been scandalous. In my generation (I'm 36) and younger, mixed race folks are much more accepted. I wouldn't be surprised that his background is attractive to younger folks, while actually more repulsive to Clinton's generation than if he was "100% black". All you have to do is listen to Ferraro's endless drivel to realize how that older generation has so little introspection about this issue.
- DeadFox1, on 03/26/2008, -5/+221) go here. http://www.barackobama.com/issues/
2) download his blueprint for change.
3) read it. - Arkavus, on 03/26/2008, -0/+15Because some idiot on the internet called someone a KKK member you shouldn't vote for Obama?
- ziptnf, on 03/26/2008, -3/+17Morning Digg is full of retards. Why is the question of Barack Obama being "American" enough even a serious question?
- mickstephenson, on 03/26/2008, -3/+16I think its dispicable that its even an issue, America is a nation of immigrants, everyone in the country is a few generations off being an immigrant. If someone has all the stuff you want to see in a president, his birthplace shouldn't be an issue.
- martalli, on 03/26/2008, -0/+12There are only three major candidates left. If you care about issues, why would reading about ones you care about be too much? They all have issues listed on their website. If you really care about issues, I find it odd that you refuse to read about them. If reading is too hard or tiresome, w you rather watch them? Check out the candidates' YouTube channels, They have made position speeches already. Endlessly claiming Obama does no talk about the issues is an empty complaint.
- Berkana, on 03/26/2008, -10/+22What about McCain? Aren't there questions about whether he's a natural born citizen?
- martalli, on 03/26/2008, -1/+12He has a very detailed platform. Anyone digging here might be interested to know he has the most detailed technology platform: http://www.barackobama.com/issues/technology/
Clinton has not tech platform clearly delineated on her website: http://www.hillaryclinton.com/issues/ - Spirckle, on 03/26/2008, -2/+13Oddly enough, Obama is related to no less than 6 past US presidents. American enough?
- vinnyvenus, on 03/26/2008, -2/+12Because
A) He has American Parents by that virtue alone he is a " Natural Born" American citizen.
B) He was born into a territory which was leased to US so in essence he was born into an American territory. - Gazthrak, on 03/26/2008, -0/+9Oh yes. Why read a wall of text that is full of information when you have a 30 second sound byte from a pastor to base your entire opinion on?
And yes, if "don't read too good" you can go to the candidates channels on YouTube. - martalli, on 03/26/2008, -2/+11...will be....
- trispear, on 03/26/2008, -1/+9Will you asses stop it? It's ridiculous. I don't like McCain any better than Obama but McCain is clearly a natural born American citizen. This is on par with "Is Obama black enough?" that they asked early in the election.
It's stupid and the people who spread it have ZERO regard for the truth. - NinjaPirateDude, on 03/26/2008, -0/+8Yes, next story............
- broohaha, on 03/26/2008, -1/+9Good god, the flag pin flak. Next thing we'll be hearing, he'll be criticized for not having at least two magnetic ribbons stuck to the back of his car.
- inactive, on 03/26/2008, -8/+16"American enough"? ***** YOU Newsweek, you Enquirer ***** piece of ***** racist RAG. ***** YOU.
I hope this sells lots of impulse copies to the fat stupid cows in the grocery check-out line, you *****. - enclaved, on 03/26/2008, -1/+9wait, why is HE an example of why not to vote for someone ELSE?
How about you're the perfect example of why small children should be left in the woods to die. - netant, on 03/26/2008, -2/+9Actually, Obama would LOVE to talk about the issues. Because he's well prepared them, and it would get the dialogue away from his negro genetic makeup.
When Hillary tries to go head to head with him on the issues, she's the one who looks lacking. That's why she can only campaign based on race politics ("Hispanics love me", "Don't vote for the BLACK guy"), lies about NAFTA positions, and how being 1st housewife for 8 years makes her more qualified to be president. - EarthernJar, on 03/26/2008, -1/+8You mean the flag pin that's made in China?
- martalli, on 03/26/2008, -0/+7McCain is a completely respectable person. I doubt I will vote for him in November, but childish insults are not reasonable arguments against his campaign.
- blackinthmiddle, on 03/26/2008, -2/+9It's also pretty low to bring a man down based on what his pastor said, but that's politics in America, unfortunately.
- vinnyvenus, on 03/26/2008, -1/+8I thought the poster was talking about McCain's eligibility not his chances to win an election.
- Arkavus, on 03/26/2008, -0/+6Oh come on man I've supported Paul for nearly a year now and even I've come to accept that he can't win this time around. There's no need to spam it everywhere.
- rpapi100, on 03/26/2008, -1/+7If Americans mesure patriotism by the size of their flag pins and the loudness of their ``God Bless America`` then truly, you people do not known what patriotism is and do not deserve a true patriot who, for once in American politics, has offered you a open hand instead of a stick as a mean to move forward a country that, whether you are conservative or liberal, libertarian or socialite, you cannot deny is in need of change. Not minor policy change, structural and ethical change. And that my friend is why John the dinosaur McCain or Hillary Know the System Clinton do not represent solutions to the problem that plagues your country. Lack of direction, lack of convictions, lack of soul.
Good luck trying with cherry-picking facts and rhetoric-ing yourself into total blindness, - martalli, on 03/26/2008, -0/+6"Really? How does President Schwarzenegger grab you?"
Firmly? /jk - adioz, on 03/26/2008, -17/+22obama is one of the most american president ever.
- Aitese, on 03/26/2008, -3/+8Then why NOT vote for him? Unless you're saying you are racist. As I can't see why you would be against one crooked politician over another crooked politician...apart from one crooked politician is black that is.
- RyanPMcBride, on 04/23/2009, -3/+8I find it interesting that Obama, born in the Unites States, is having to deal with this issue more than McCain, who was born in the Panama Canal Zone. It is fascinating it hasn't been brought up much this election.
- Arkavus, on 03/26/2008, -1/+6If he smoked weed he wouldn't be such an idiot.
- martalli, on 03/26/2008, -0/+5I am 100% behind Obama, but I also agree completely with what you are saying. This "is McCain an American?" is unmitigated BS.
- martalli, on 03/26/2008, -0/+5Ell3: That's what the parent post was saying.
- zephyear, on 03/26/2008, -1/+5":Vote Dr. Ron Paul if you care about the welfare of this nation."
hahahahahahahah.
ron paul is good at seeing what's wrong with america, but (most) of his solutions are ***** crazy.
stop going for the candidate who doesn't have a chance, i bet you voted nader in 2000 because you wanted to help make a difference or a point or something. - cquinnd, on 03/26/2008, -1/+5Gov Schwarzenegger had to become a naturalized citizen after being legally born an Austrian citizen. McCain was legally born a US citizen, and to my knowledge no one has ever claimed he shared nationality as a Panamanian.
- sqwirl, on 03/26/2008, -2/+6Since you're so sure that Obama and his supporters 'despise America', then you shouldn't have a problem listing a few sources, right?
- Lazydriver, on 03/26/2008, -0/+4Hear hear.
Though the disability thing's been a long time coming, he actually wanted to start that a bit later with the Social Security age being raised... What the hell happened to our securities? - headinthesand, on 03/26/2008, -2/+6Every time I read a pointed article like this it makes me go barackobama.com and donate some more of my children's college money. It makes me sick to think that Americans are still this Ignorant. As a white male I am disgusted with some of the people of my "race". Wake up "White" America your head his completely crammed up your ASS....
- martalli, on 03/26/2008, -4/+8No, ironically, those are the values that Bush has pursued: two wars, massive spending increases (including a crazily spendthirft medicare prescription program) and a massive increase of people on the disability roll.
- netant, on 03/26/2008, -2/+6Yeah, and John F. Kennedy sucked and Bill Clinton sucked too. Never pick the less experienced candidate.
- Arkavus, on 03/26/2008, -1/+51/10 on the troll scale.
- martalli, on 03/26/2008, -1/+5Seek calm, little grasshopper, and your prose may flow with erudition, convincing minds by the thousands. Anger leads to the profanity, and with profanity lies the dark side.
- scottc, on 03/26/2008, -1/+4"You Americans better figure this out before it's too late."
You aren't even an American and you are trying to define for us what it means to be an American?? - rawg, on 03/26/2008, -0/+3You hit the nail on the head. What does the author of the article mean by "American"? Instead of asking if Obama is "American" enough, let's ask how Hillary or McCain are more "American" than Obama. The only answer is that they are older and whiter. That's not what "American" means to me.
- gerbco, on 03/26/2008, -1/+4So being black diminishes your American credentials?!?!??!
Pure filth. - TimDigg, on 03/26/2008, -0/+3umm no they don't....We should based on what the candidates merits are...point blank
I don't like McCain, but I would think it ashame, he didn't elected, because he doesn't have on the new outfit from nordstrom - tj111, on 03/26/2008, -0/+3Race is only an issue because it is consistently repeated to Americans from elementary schools to the nightly news.
- StueyPidass, on 03/26/2008, -0/+3I agree with xlar. Stop talking about color and start talking about issues. Issues like the Economy and the War both of which he has no idea how to deal with. Hes only saying what people want to hear. and not what they should hear
- PhilMoskowitz, on 03/26/2008, -2/+5I expect this stuff over on fark since drew curtis barely has one foot out of the trailer, but do we really need this kind of nonsense to reach the FP here?
