- timkronberger, on 07/04/2009, -1/+24Sounds sort of like a case for the SAS...
- inactive, on 07/03/2009, -3/+23There should be quotation marks around "trail" and "elections".
The IRGC needs to go die in a fire. - DouglasQ, on 07/04/2009, -3/+20"Iran's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, last month described Britain, as the "most evil" of its enemies."
Makes you proud to be British.
I genuinely am less proud of the UK when cool countries think we rock than when douchebag governments ***** hate us.
Rule Britannia. - anonymousmedic, on 07/04/2009, -2/+18Nothing like a Kangaroo court that will make these people out to be scapegoats for the regime. How many people want to bet they'll be hung for spying for the CIA/MI6 or some crap like that?
These people are going to be victims of Amadinajad's tyrrany, and examples to "prove" his paranoia. - egemenbor, on 07/04/2009, -2/+15when all else fails start blaming others for the chaos..good move Iran..
- inactive, on 07/04/2009, -1/+13How much longer are we going to use events from over half a century ago to justify Iran's behavior now?
And it is not like Iran hasn't meddled in Iraq and Lebanon's affairs themselves. - unit001, on 07/04/2009, -1/+11Iranian trial:
Prosecutor: What floats?
Crowd: Rocks?
Prosecutor: No
Crowd: Very small rocks?
Smart Iranian: A duck!
Prosecutor: If he weigh's more than a duck, he started the protests! - Threlly1, on 07/04/2009, -1/+10Yeah, but remember the Italians invaded Britain in AD 43, so why aren't you down on them eh ?
- smacksaw, on 07/04/2009, -1/+10I hope they do put these people on trial so that the EU fully disengages with Iran and supports sanctions.
Sadly it's going to take something like this to wake the EU up and have the Europeans get tough and put real pressure on China and Russia. - inactive, on 07/04/2009, -0/+7It happened but the facts are never presented in full
Mossadegh exiled the Shah's sister and tried to take his estates, also demanded full control of the military which was not legally responsible to him as prime minister. He also dissolved parliament in a rigged vote winning 99.7%
The Shah was never "installed", he was born the prince of Iran and made King a decade before Mossadegh was elected
The Shah actually even appointed Mossadegh his first major government position
The Shah was only gone for 2-3 days, the UK/US helped bring him back
Democracy was not "overthrown" in 1953, only Mossadegh. The Iranian parliament continued to function as normal for years after
The Shah only became dictatorial in the late 1960s/early 70s, which can probably be chalked up more to senility than his life behavior
Oh and also, the Ayatollah Khomeini was angered at the Shah not for 1953's events, but for the Shah's "white revolution" where he gave women more rights, expanded education and land reform. The Shah pissed off the Muslim clerics for trying to modernize the country.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_Revolution - brandnewx, on 07/04/2009, -6/+13Iran is begging to be destroyed. Their peaceful use of nuclear technology now seems very unlikely. I seriously don't think it's a good idea to allow nuclear capability to the people who shoot and kill their fellow citizens like animals. With nuclear, they're gonna feel like oppressing their people more and threatening foreign humanitarian inventions with nuclear weapons.
- anonymousmedic, on 07/04/2009, -0/+7Who Dares Wins.
- JoeCool1986, on 07/04/2009, -5/+11Wow, an actual news story on the front page of Digg that has nothing to do with American politics, technology, or female teacher sex offenders. I'm impressed!
- tk0680, on 07/04/2009, -1/+7The Viking invasion of Britain happened too - is that relevant? Should we kick Scandinavia about or what?
- massrox, on 07/04/2009, -0/+6They should send in Ross Kemp.
- edd17, on 07/04/2009, -0/+5Did you read the article? This is about Iranian citizens working for the British embassy.
- inactive, on 07/04/2009, -0/+5Ross Perot hired private mercenaries to bust his people out of an Iranian jail in 1979, think the UK needs to follow his example.
- unit001, on 07/04/2009, -1/+6What we have here is a good old fashioned arms race. As an American I'm happy to see another country step forward to play with us in the World Pissing Off Bad Guys competition. Best of luck to you guys over there. Remember, if they speak to you with blind sputtering rage, you're on the right track.
- tk0680, on 07/04/2009, -2/+6No. There are a lot of Iranian people out there (you know, the ones who voted for Mousavi) who are significantly more pissed about the situation than you are, and they do not deserve to be "destroyed".
Don't confuse the leadership with the populace. - norman619, on 07/04/2009, -1/+5So is anyone taking bets yet on when the invasion of Iran will be?
- MacParrot, on 07/04/2009, -0/+4"I seriously don't think it's a good idea to allow nuclear capability to the people who shoot and kill their fellow citizens like animals"
Kent State, Tieniman Square, Rainbow Warrior, various squashed uprisings in former and current communist countries ALL with Nukes. Not saying that Iran with nukes is an ok thing (it isn't), but every country with nukes currently on occasion goes off the deep end and kills a few of its citizens. - BurgGuy, on 07/04/2009, -0/+3chorus:
Burn the Duck!
Burn the Duck! - brandnewx, on 07/04/2009, -0/+3It's from unlikely to very unlikely.
- Presbyterian, on 07/04/2009, -1/+4What the ***** are you talking about?.
Iran stories are on the front page all the time. - brownsound00, on 07/04/2009, -0/+3Which is why no one can put troops in Iran. He'll just use them as propaganda for his cause.
- MacParrot, on 07/04/2009, -0/+3The question not answered here is who these employees are? IF they're UK citizens then they most likely have diplomatic immunity (unless they're contractors) for their actions. If they are locals hired for various administrative functions, then they have no immunity and Iran can pretty much do as they please. Short of removing the UK Ambassador or sending Iranian diplomats in England home, there isn't much the UK can do.
- tk0680, on 07/04/2009, -0/+3Because a government doing that wouldn't be (quite rightly) considered an act of war at all. Honestly, I think this is just as bad a move on Iran's part as you do, but hiring Rambo is not the way to go about solving the problem.
- error2k2, on 07/04/2009, -0/+3THERE ARE 4 LIGHTS!
- tk0680, on 07/04/2009, -1/+4Sigh.
You know, I always thought Iran was a bit too "religious whackjob" at the upper tiers (since Ahmadinnerjacket anyway), but I didn't think they were quite at this level of retardity until this election farce. - weeFred, on 07/04/2009, -1/+3Like arresting another countries embassy staff and putting them through a fake trial for something they didn't do isn't an act of war.
- chongli, on 07/04/2009, -0/+2Sounds like a job for the SAS.
- Ghostalker, on 07/04/2009, -4/+6This'll be the fastest trial since North Korea tried those journalists a few weeks back. Only took them 45min, lets see how fast Iran can do it.
- FairDinkumMate, on 07/04/2009, -0/+2Hence why the sentence reads "but...."
- grantmoore3d, on 07/04/2009, -1/+3***** that, send in your Special Forces and get them back if things go sour. Don't let childish back-asswards countries use your country-men as scapegoats for their own problems.
- weeFred, on 07/04/2009, -0/+2Because they were working for the British government so we should be doing everything in our power to get them out. Yes they should be going down every diplomatic route possible, but they should also be working covertly on a plan to get them out using special forces. If talks break down or it becomes apparent that they have no intention of releasing them, then military means should be used. I was only pointing out that we get treated like this all the time and yet we never hold them to account. What happened when they kidnapped the Royal Marines? We got them back and that was the end of it, they should be punished for these types of acts.
- tk0680, on 07/04/2009, -0/+1I'm not suggesting that it isn't. What I am suggesting is that two wrongs don't make a right. Why should anyone sink to Iran's level until there's no other option?
- JohnnySoftware, on 07/14/2009, -0/+1The 5 accused are Iranian citizens who were born in and live in Iran. They are not British citizens. They were local hired help. Got it?
- carlosos, on 07/04/2009, -1/+2"Five of the nine employees were reportedly released on Monday and Iranian state media said on Wednesday it had freed three more, but British and EU officials say two remain in custody."
9-5-3=2 or 1? - carlosos, on 07/04/2009, -0/+1A few hundred years?
Iran isn't like Afghanistan or Iraq. You are talking about a modern country here that has real weapons. - norman619, on 07/04/2009, -4/+5It only now seems unlikely? Well at least you are waking up. There are still a great many diggers here who buy that BS.
- gigi52, on 07/05/2009, -0/+1War is a last resort, but what do you do with an out of control regime? Another reason 'islamic republic' is not a republic, but a dictatorship and we should deal with them an the enemy they are.
- inactive, on 07/04/2009, -0/+1Iran will no doubt get to the truth, the same sort of truth that belongs in a fiction section.
- norman619, on 07/04/2009, -0/+1You may also like to take a look at the military might of Iran.

It isn't modern nor is it great. - mbondr, on 07/05/2009, -0/+1This is even more foolish than the arrest of the lady reporter. I don't think they could have found a better way of showing just how incapable of rule they are. If I were the Iranian military, I'd be giving some careful thought about my support of this regime. There are still a few reasons why it would be nice to have at least some contact with Europe and US, and to throw it away for so petty a reason. Nobody is going to believe this, at home or abroad.
- Anightowl, on 07/08/2009, -0/+1There's a great lesson here. When your government is run by a nut who is pissing people off, or has close ties with one, don't work at an embassy.
- Anightowl, on 07/08/2009, -0/+1Well, we kind of did do what they said, so they do have a point.
- norman619, on 07/04/2009, -3/+4No fair you just stole our (USA) title! Just you wait, We will work hard to get it back. Oh wait.... I forgot Obama is president. Nevermind.
- lioozher, on 07/05/2009, -0/+0Yah, cause you know the English would NEVER EVER do any such thing...
