STOP ALL WAR!!! - joybran, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Are you seriously suggesting that, if we stopped all our aggressions around the world and brought our troops home to defend the United States, they couldn't protect America? Those angry people you mention hate us because of our actions in their countries. If we stopped robbing and killing them in their own countries, their goal of getting us out of their countries would be achieved and they would have no reason to kill us.
Stop and think about it. Can you really imagine a country like Iran trying to attack, invade and occupy the United States? Iran has a population of about 70 million. How could they even think about attacking a country with a population of 300 million, mostly armed? Even if all the Moslem nations, many of whom hate each other, joined together in an alliance to attack us, we have more atomic weapons than the rest of the world combined. It would be global suicide.
As long as we are "over there," non-government terrorists have a reason to try to sneak small atomic bombs into the U.S. because they know we don't defend our borders and we would have no legitimate target for retaliation. Remember, the 9/11 terrorists were mostly Saudis, but they knew we wouldn't attack their country in retaliation because Saudi Arabia is an ally of our government.
Even if there were some individual terrorists who were so devoted to revenge for our past crimes that they would still try to kill Americans after we left their countries, they would have much less chance of success with all our troops guarding our borders. They would be treated as the criminals they are, even by their own governments, who would be glad to see us gone and wouldn't want to risk us coming back.
If you are concerned about Americans abroad, the same reasoning applies. Absent a U.S. military presence to protect them, Americans are tourists and customers of the countries they visit. Who is stupid enough to kill their customers and trading partners? It would mean multi-national corporations that exploit other countries by means of U.S. military power would no longer be able to do that. They would have to compete with local native companies on customer satisfaction alone, which would end any incentive for their customers to attack them.
All this is just common sense if you think about foreigners as human beings with the same kinds of hopes and dreams and desires we all share rather than as some kind of sub-human species that "hates freedom" and lives for destruction. If anyone hates freedom, it is the Americans who have allowed their government to become the world's biggest bully. - paulspencer, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1This is an obvious step in the current context of polls that show a strong majority of the electorate opposes both the current occupation/war and a potential attack on Iran. Let's escalate the stakes a little now, instead of either sitting on our hands until November, 2008 or going nutso as so many of us did 40 years ago.
- kemp34, on 08/03/2008, -1/+1So you don't support democracy for Iraq? The people want U.S. forces out. If you want to stay, you have to admit you do not care about democracy in Iraq.
- jimbabb, on 10/11/2007, -2/+2"Do we have to resort to non-violence?" If Bush/Hillary/Obama are keeping "all options on the table", shouldn't the resistance do the same? Why is resistance only pledged against Bush's wars? The US war machine has been in the hands of the Democrats since the last election. And what about the current victims of US government aggression, aren't their lives as valuable?
Here is my suggested re-write:
"We, the undersigned, will not further acquiesce to military aggression, or any intervention against other nations by the UNITED STATES GOVERNMENT. We pledge to oppose that aggression by our active participation in a campaign of mass resistance."
BTW, the US government has already committed acts of war against the Iranian people, so get to it. - joybran, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1You are absolutely right, but good luck in getting anyone to join you. Americans don't want to face the fact that our government is committing war crimes in our name. A growing number of people are realizing that, if our government continues its march to all-out war with Iran, our country as we know it will be destroyed. Our economy will collapse, we may lose hundreds of thousands of troops, and the little freedom we have left will disappear. But there aren't enough people yet who are even aware of it, let alone willing to be the first to engage in non-violent resistance or civil disobedience.
- Kirennye, on 10/11/2007, -3/+1I don't think that we should pull out the Troops, but I don't think that we should be sending more in. Besides Americans are fighting among themselves, and in that the divide, is hurting the country. What I'd like to see is everyone massing together for one single cause. That cause, should be to protect America. Hell if we do pull out the troops, I say bomb the country and be done with it. If they did it with Japan, then what stops America from bombing Iran or Iraq.
What I would like to see, is America just leave well enough alone. They have meddled way too much and the consequences are going to return on us. Imagine a pond of water, you throw a rock into it, you get ripples. But the catch is the ripples always return. I support the Let's protect America, but as for pulling out the troops, I don't. America has already messed up the Iraqis' way of life- even if they did live in fear. I think that we should finish what what started.
On a side note- I'm not voting for the one that said that he'd remove Homeland Security. Rommey's an idiot. - Kirennye, on 10/11/2007, -3/+0The only time war will cease, will be when we are all dead. I'm an American, and one whose not proud of my country. But let me tell you now that the American Government has taken out Sadam. Doing so has royally messed up the order of things over there. In that problem, there are alot of angry people, that once were dormant, that now have been stirred up. These peoples want all Americans dead for the interference- and believe me, they won't stop until they achieve their goal. So if you stop this war- think about it. There will be drastic changes in the nations and/or another Atomic bombing- and it may be on US soil instead.
Think about it.
