- Adam420, on 04/03/2009, -48/+410Nice to see some more progress!!!
Good job Iowa! :) - Ninjapope, on 04/03/2009, -32/+330“I don’t want this taught in schools,” Overton said. “Animals don’t do that.”
Actually

and monogamy in animals is pretty rare. - aduzik, on 04/03/2009, -37/+259I have never been prouder to be an Iowan. Let's hope our little state starts a trend!
- briarmoss, on 04/03/2009, -28/+231You know what's delicious? Stories of homophobic ***** getting really disappointed and pissed. That's MY kind of breakfast. I hope that doesn't make me a bad person.
- aduzik, on 04/03/2009, -29/+221New marketing slogan for Iowa: "Come for the corn, stay for the civil rights."
- inactive, on 04/03/2009, -25/+187Right before Bush second term, I talked with one of my elderly neighbors and tried to persuade her not to vote for Bush. She said, "I don't care, I am just so disgusted at the thought of those gays getting married, there's nothing that would make me not vote for Bush."
A couple of days ago, she was complaining about the rise of her insurance costs, prescription costs, gas pricess and that her son's job was outsourced and he was in foreclosure and now bankruptcy because he couldn't sell his home for what he paid for it. I looked at her and said, "Well, I'm sure the fact that gays can't marry makes it all worth it."
She just looked at me, went into the house and slammed the door!
I'm glad the old bitch got what was coming to her as will a lot of other fvckers that thought stopping queers from getting married was more important than getting that stupid prick out of the White House! - Michael9636, on 04/03/2009, -24/+165For those keeping track of our progress:
Sweden was the latest country to legalize same-sex marriage, joining the Netherlands, Belgium, Spain, Canada, South Africa and Norway.
In the United States, homosexual marriage is legal in Massachusetts and Connecticut - and NOW IOWA - the first state in the midiwest to do so! Congratulations, Iowa! Let's hope California gets its act together soon. - wild, on 04/03/2009, -32/+161Hell yea Iowa. (You paying attention Californians?)
- ebarnum, on 04/03/2009, -27/+148Finally some good news. And from my state too!
- tgjerusalem, on 04/03/2009, -11/+128Civil rights aren't dependent on the popular vote. If they were, they wouldn't be rights.
- viandebaiser, on 04/03/2009, -29/+127Super proud of Iowa right now. I'm ready to move back.
- lydecker, on 04/03/2009, -2/+90“I don’t want this taught in schools,” Overton said. “Animals don’t do that.”
I agree! Time to stop teaching about marriage, mathematics, science, art, history, and language. Animals don't do any of those. From now on schools only teach how to eat, sleep, fight and have sex. - Alheithinn, on 04/03/2009, -27/+110Well done, Iowa! Let's see this event repeated across the country!
- novenator, on 04/03/2009, -26/+106When I was a boy, Iowa was actually a bit redneck. It's great to see it growing up and turning less regressive.
- aduzik, on 04/03/2009, -6/+83This is a civil rights issue, and is exactly why the United States is a republic that has majority rule with minority rights. What's more, the Iowa Supreme Court did enforce the will of the people, just as our constitution specifies. The Equal Protection Clause says that all Iowans are to be treated equally under the laws of this state.
- Budkin, on 04/03/2009, -20/+95Wow, Iowa?? Mad Props!
- blueaura, on 04/03/2009, -8/+81"...social conservatives who wanted to protect traditional families."
OH NO the poor traditional families! They are in grave danger now! All you traditional families in Iowa, you better lock yer doors & bar yer windows. Teh homogays are coming for you!1!1
(That was sarcasm. I only point that out because this is Digg.) - ironhide, on 04/03/2009, -4/+76Matthew 7:1-5
Judge not lest ye be judged
For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again
And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother's eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye?
Or how wilt thou say to thy brother, Let me pull out the mote out of thine eye; and, behold, a beam is in thine own eye?
Thou hypocrite, first cast out the beam out of thine own eye; and then shalt thou see clearly to cast out the mote out of thy brother's eye.
John 13:34
A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another. - hoohah625, on 04/03/2009, -6/+78If you're interested, read the full decision. It applies intermediate scrutiny to discrimination based on sexual orientation (that's huge), finds that the gay marriage ban fails intermediate scrutiny, and determines that lesbians and gays must have the full benefits of civil marriage. It's a forthright and well-reasoned decision. Thank you, Iowa! Excellent precedent.
- bobburn1, on 04/03/2009, -15/+83Way to go Iowa, show those Californians how to do it.
- Freemium, on 04/03/2009, -11/+77As a Nebraskan, I can honestly say that's completely fine. I think this is the first time I've ever awoken to stories of equality happening....in the Midwest, no less. Today is a good ***** day.
- Kanuhduh, on 04/03/2009, -12/+75Please note that while California did ban same sex marriage, 48% or so of us Californians voted against it prop 8. So don't hate on all of us, hate on the ignorant ones.
- sbader, on 04/03/2009, -2/+62well the topic is marriage and most animals aren't monogamous sooo bringing animals into the conversation is kind of silly.
- ironhide, on 04/03/2009, -3/+62Either everyone has the right to a state sanctioned marriage, or no one should.
Period. - the2989, on 04/03/2009, -11/+69As a Nebraskan, I've always made fun of Iowa, but now that they've upped us, I have no more room to talk! Congrats Iowa, I hope your influence can bring more changes in the states around you!
- Fustigations, on 04/03/2009, -2/+59Those damn pagan animals! When will we finally bring them the word of god?!?!?
- Hetman, on 04/03/2009, -4/+60Polygamy should also be legal if it is happening between consenting adults. The only problem I have with polygamy is that every time you see it, it just so happens that it is a 50 year old guy marrying teens who had no choice in the matter. If it was done by multiple consenting adults I would be perfectly fine with it. And we would need to change are tax laws a bit.
- ironhide, on 04/03/2009, -4/+60Exactly. For some reason christians act like they invented marriage.
Newsflash - you didn't. - Samohtneas, on 04/03/2009, -2/+53Delicious copy pasta.
- OliverWolcott, on 04/03/2009, -3/+54But Iowa isn't a red state anymore. Obama won it. Most of the Congressional delegation is Democrat(except for the batty Steve King). The Governor is a Democrat.
- Hero4Hire, on 04/03/2009, -12/+63OK... subtle, but important point:
They did not "legalize" gay marriage, they struck down a discriminatory and bigoted law.
This is why "Christians" have such power in our society, we allow THEM to phrase the debate.
Homosexuals are humans entitled to the dignity afforded others.
Homosexual Americans are citizens entitled to the protections of law.
They are not "they", they are a part of "us".
The sooner we learn to look passed what makes us different, the sooner we can move on to what is important:
Keeping those strange foreigners out. - zephyear, on 04/03/2009, -4/+55yeah right, we should of just let voters decide on getting rid of racial segregation instead of courts, because they obviously would have voted for it.
sometimes the the populace itself is oppressive and it takes the government and courts to change that, it's called the tyranny of the majority - TheDeuce53, on 04/03/2009, -10/+60http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2009/04/03/iowa-su ...
Check out some of the comments on foxnews.com about this. The ignorance is scary. - ApokalypseNow, on 04/03/2009, -7/+57Me 3:14159 "And I say unto thee, 'Get thee a life! Thy ridiculous passages matter not to those that do not already believe in thy myths!'"
- inactive, on 04/03/2009, -5/+54Why? Same sex marriages predate the christian religion.
- UltraV21, on 04/03/2009, -5/+53I'm thankful our Justices actually take the seperation of Church and State seriously! Go Iowa!
- theeldest, on 04/03/2009, -2/+48I got an A in Poop.
- sarahlee, on 04/03/2009, -23/+68Congratulations, Iowa!
- aduzik, on 04/03/2009, -4/+49Ah, the slippery slope argument: when you don't have a real defense for your position, try saying something crazy instead!
- Adam420, on 04/03/2009, -5/+49Iowa is pretty liberal, they even voted for Obama.
- kismetropolis, on 04/03/2009, -21/+63WAY TO GO, I-O-WAY
All my Iowan friends are happydancing, and so am I. - flanflan567, on 04/03/2009, -1/+43Yup.
- dygel, on 04/03/2009, -1/+42Yes.
- ApokalypseNow, on 04/03/2009, -3/+44In 2000, among non-denominational christians, the divorce rate was 34%, for Baptists 29%, for born-again christians 27%, and for atheists/agnostics, 21%.
How can you call marriage "sacred" when atheists and agnostics take it more seriously than christians? - lydecker, on 04/03/2009, -0/+41"Have gay marriages, don't have them It does not affect my salvation."
I am always shocked at the number of people who vote as if this is not true. - Adwt0125, on 04/03/2009, -5/+46Never would have thought I would live in Iowa with Gay Marriage legal here and illegal in California.
- Bartboy919, on 04/03/2009, -22/+62Meanwhile, Ron Paul was heard muttering, "This state is Queer, This state is Queer"
- sbader, on 04/03/2009, -2/+42So courts aren't supposed to be a check on the legislative branch?
- 1packer, on 04/03/2009, -5/+43Just in response to zach throwing out the legislating from the bench card, apparently some lawmakers felt the same way in the CNN article.
"The case was joined on appeal by several state lawmakers who opposed Hanson's ruling, calling it "a mockery of the judicial system." They argued that the ruling stepped on the state Legislature's authority by using the courts "to effectuate fundamental changes in public policies regarding marriage."
However that came right after the line that defined the responsibilities of the Iowa Supreme Court to be that it has the responsibility to determine if a law enacted by the legislative branch and enforced by the executive branch violates the Iowa Constitution.
I would say that striking a law down for being against the state constitution is very much part of their job, nice try, come back when you have a real argument instead of random talking points. - Verchiel77, on 04/03/2009, -1/+39I love it when people cry "Judical Activism" whenever there's a decision they don'y like. If a law is unconstitutional, then it's unconstitutional and the court has no choice but to void it.
FTA:
Iowa’s gay marriage ban “is unconstitutional, because the county has been unable to identify a constitutionally adequate justification for excluding plaintiffs from the institution of civil marriage,” Cady wrote in the 69-page opinion that seemed to dismiss the concept of civil unions as an option for gay couples.
“A new distinction based on sexual orientation would be equally suspect and difficult to square with the fundamental principles of equal protection embodied in our constitution,” Cady wrote. -
