- novenator, on 07/15/2009, -0/+9Salazar is in bed with the mining industry, not surprising considering he is passed out drunk from coors.
That outrageous comment aside, FTA - "Salazar was testifying in support of two senate bills that would end the giveaway of minerals on federal land--a federal law from 1872 still allows companies to extract gold and other minerals royalty-free--and use the money to finance the cleanup of mining sites. An estimated 500,000 abandoned mines have contaminated the headwaters of 40 percent of the West's streams. Cleaning them up will cost at least $32 billion."
This actually sounds like a good proposal. I have seen numerous abandoned mining facilities in my career, and they are toxic wastelands. Once a company goes bankrupt, there is simply no money to do the cleanup. Of course, some mineral barons struck it rich in the meantime. We need to enforce a more environmentally sound mining policy. - xenuxenuts, on 07/16/2009, -0/+7I'm all for better beer. The first step should be to stop producing Coors.
- chargernj, on 07/16/2009, -0/+5But Coors isn't beer, not really. I mean I know people call it beer, but if you ever tasted it next to a real beer you would realize your error.
- Lederhosed, on 07/15/2009, -0/+5It's remarkable how many times the Senate has tried and failed to reform the 1872 Mining Law. The effort always gets derailed because western mining states have considerable power in the Senate. But with the rise of places like Las Vegas, where the only gold mining that takes place happens at the casinos, it's only a matter of time before something happens (Despite the fact that Sen. Harry Reid, the son of a gold miner, is in bed with the industry). Even with competing demands for a climate and health reform bill, I think something might actually happen on this before year's end.
- askantik, on 07/16/2009, -0/+4Ever since Obama picked Salazar, I've thought he was a pretty poor choice for Interior Secretary. There were many other, better choices... of course, Ken Salazar is better than Dirk Kempthorne, but that's not saying a whole lot.

- Cainxinth, on 07/16/2009, -0/+2That's good cuz Bud don't pay me *****.
- JingJang, on 07/16/2009, -0/+1Salazar's efforts to introduce ANY reform into Mining Law are an excellent idea, and his good Samaritan bill from 2006 was a necessary first step in order to get anything done concerning cleaning up these old mines. Nothing got done for fear of lawsuits.
As a Coloradan, I appreciate Salazar's understanding of Federal lands as a shared common resource that can be BOTH preserved AND utilized. He's understands the balance that must be struck between preservation and exploitation of resources. Frankly, I find the fact that he annoys both environmentalists AND industry rather refreshing. It means he's making reasonable compromises.
I do take issue with the senator from Idaho though: Most of the Barley for Coors comes from the San Luis Valley in Southern Colorado. (But Idaho does have "Great Potatoes" just like the license plate says :) ) - roland, on 07/16/2009, -0/+1This is not the road to recovery.

- UselessTrivia, on 07/16/2009, -1/+2Can we please start putting some real money into our space program so we can just start mining asteroids?
It won't be until space travel is profitable that we ever have any alleviation of resource shortages on earth.
Imagine how much money you'd be able to charge for a bottle of water made from melted comet ice. - pbs11, on 09/21/2009, -0/+0Secretary Salazar is too busy playing with golf balls all day. To notice the problems of the Interior.
