In Israel, Bush Forgets He Supported The Election Hamas Won
motherjones.com — It was the Bush administration that "twisted the arm" of Israeli and Palestinian leaders and forced them to allow Hamas to run in 2006 Palestinian elections. Then, of course, Hamas won those elections -- an outcome that the Bush administration of course failed to anticipate.

- moolaismyfriend, on 05/16/2008, -6/+31It's amazing even the anti-American grunts at Little Green Footballs seem to forget that Bush said that Palestine should have a free and open election, and when Hamas won he had to eat his own words.
The lack of any ethical and moral standards by Bush and every single Bush supporter is an assault upon liberty. - SheilaNoya, on 05/16/2008, -5/+29Talking to a democratically elected government (Hamas) is not allowed, according to Bush. Yet today he's meeting with the Islamic dictators in Saudi Arabia.
We also need to clear the air on what "appeasement" actually means. Discussing problems with our adversaries and trying to find a solution is NOT "appeasement". The term "appeasement" only applies if you give them something in return for what you want - Like when Bush sells military fighter jets to Saudi Arabia so they will keep the oil flowing to the U.S. - THAT'S appeasement.- DeviantDragon, on 05/17/2008, -1/+3That's still not really appeasement. Appeasement is more giving them something with the hopes that it will satisfy them and sate a particular desire that they may have. What you described, "giving them something in return for what you want" is simply trade. Appeasement is much more one-sided.
- MurphyWatson, on 05/16/2008, -2/+16He also supports Musharrif in Pakistan. Its worth mentioning, being that hes a military dictator and all.
- p0s3r, on 05/17/2008, -3/+13So, what you're saying is you shouldn't support democracy just because you don't agree with the results?
- ElAssoWipo, on 05/17/2008, -2/+2That seems to be the argument.
"pay any price, bear any burden, meet any hardship, support any friend, oppose any foe, in order to assure the survival and success of liberty."

In other words, be free or we'll kill you. - chicofaraby, on 05/17/2008, -3/+3No, you missed the point as usual. The point is that Hamas is the elected representative of the Palestinian people. They should be treated with respect and their positions have the legitimacy of any other national government.
- ElAssoWipo, on 05/17/2008, -2/+2That seems to be the argument.

In Soviet Russia, Hamas forgets you! - bicyclethief, on 05/17/2008, -1/+11"We (the U.S.) like democracy in strategically irrelevant countries." - Fareed Zakaria
- blackjack75, on 05/17/2008, -1/+1When the islamists won the democratic elections in Algeria in the 90's, the government decided to keep the power with help from the military and acted as if it never happened. A long series of attacks ensued during which thousands of algerians were killled on either side.
In the end they managed to get another government elected. As a westerner I think the end result is better than it would have been if the F.I.S. had taken power and progressively supressed democracy. On the other hand that's what people had asked for when voting.
The case in Palestine is similar. The situation is so tense that elections are bound to bring bad people to power. - lazerus9, on 05/17/2008, -1/+2Check this out:http://youtube.com/watch?v=wYOV_ydh0ik&feature=rel ...
