In this time of great current need - the financial and housing crisis, the addiction to oil, the crippling public debt, the impending social security shortfall, an overstretched armed services fighting two wars, global warming, rising threats from China and Russia, diminished standing in the international community, etc, etc - the president should not be the one swooping in at the last minute to grab a piece of the action. The president should be at the forefront, proposing ideas and plotting a course for all to follow, making sacrifices with the rest of the country to get things back on track. The next President's job should be the most thankless one to have. McCain is not up to that - he has not prepared himself for it, and we have now seen it manifest.
