- randf, on 10/11/2007, -15/+84can you hear us? can you hear us now?
- edstate, on 10/11/2007, -15/+82What? The politicians actually listened to the American people? And not big business? And not the other lobbyists and special interests? Wow. Smear my ears with jam and tie me to an ant hill. I'm amazed. This is a proud day for this country. Bravo people.
- gacrimewatch, on 10/11/2007, -20/+66Best news i've seen all week!!!
- grunk, on 10/11/2007, -6/+48I still want to know who voted for cloture. I'd like to see their sorry butts thrown out of office. Maybe now there can be an open debate about what to do about immigration, not just a one-sided lecture from corporate media.
- CGBS6183, on 10/11/2007, -20/+58Breaking News: The Senator from Massachusetts,Ted Kennedy is leaving the US and takes up residency in Mexico.
- Fieri, on 10/11/2007, -3/+33Beware of sneak attacks in the months to come with small sections of this bill being shoved through in pieces.
- CGBS6183, on 10/11/2007, -7/+36no, we blew out the phones LOL
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -13/+36This is something that liberals and conservatives can agree on. ***** the government, anyone that is or was at one time for this bill does not represent the people of the United States of America.
- randf, on 10/11/2007, -10/+32i hope he moves much farther away, that way he is not tempted to sneak across the border at night.
OTOH...no self respecting coyote would drag that lard-ass thru the desert - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -8/+28I am glad it didnt pass. People should be coming here to work the LEGAL way.
- jim1s, on 10/11/2007, -16/+35Way to go Senate and Voinovich! You just got in a major uppercut right into the jaw of Kennedy, Bush and Reid and all the other globalists who are purposely trying to ruin this wonderful country.
- CGBS6183, on 10/11/2007, -5/+24I can not speak for all but I am not against immigration just for better reform than this bill was proposing, also if we allowed our border patrol to do their jobs and enforce the existing laws before we consider any new legislation. Amnesty was granted in the Regan administration and the laws meant to enforce immigration afterwords was not followed otherwise we would still not have the problems we have. I would also like to point out I have not noticed any hate on here just relief this particular bill did not pass.
- obliviousfool, on 10/11/2007, -11/+29Maybe the thing will stay dead this time.
- DiggeralToolz, on 10/11/2007, -6/+23Fine the snot out of the companies and people who employ the Illegal Aliens. When the jobs dry up they will return home all on their own.
Why do you think they came to America in the first place? - Magillicutti, on 10/11/2007, -2/+18Wow.. this is just now making it to the front page?
- jml235, on 10/11/2007, -2/+17Ok, so if I were an immigrant, and there were NO jobs whatsoever in my home country, and getting to the U.S. was virtually SO hard that I couldn't get in legally (i'll take it from imbob that this is the case), then you're right, I probably would immigrate illegally. But I would do so knowing full well the potential consequences of my actions. I broke the law. In certain parts of the world, laws MEAN something. They are justified in sending me back if i'm caught. Further, I am RESPONSIBLE for putting myself in a position to be exploited. No one is forcing me to be "exploited." In fact, I'd say being "exploited" in the U.S. is better than being free in my home country. If this wasn't true, why do we have as many illegal immigrants as we do?
My point is, I can think of scenarios where I would probably break the law (someone kills my child, rapes my wife, insert gruesome crime of choice). But I wouldn't complain about having my ass sent to jail. I knew the law. I made my choice. If I go to jail to be Billy-Bob's Bitch, then so be it.
I think if there is any resentment - appleann1, on 10/11/2007, -6/+21Here's the list.
http://michellemalkin.com/2007/06/28/kill-the-bill-shamnesty-showdown/ - CGBS6183, on 10/11/2007, -6/+20OK this is a little off topic but why is a story that has 11 diggs and 0 comments on the hot and upcoming stories in World and Business where it was not there an hour ago and this one has yet to make it even though it has 23 diggs in 2 hrs and 10 comments. I am new to digg somewhat and I know they have an "algorithm" that determines popularity but seems like it is not working right. Maybe Kennedy, Reid and Bush are behind it, just seems a little odd.
- RuffRidr, on 10/11/2007, -6/+20The title didn't have enough Bush bashing in it. That would've automatically sent it to the front page.
- jasg, on 10/11/2007, -3/+17@Ricapar
i am an immigrant and this is the best news all week ! if you want to come here then come here. If In the due process
1) you are breaking the laws of this country and
2) after several years you come out of hiding, meet up with others and demonstrate on the streets, demanding that you be given legal status,
3)stupid politicians actually considering your demands make a stupid bill that penalizes Legal immigrants and their immediate family members(in ref to proposed amendment to Family Reunification Act)
After seeing all these any person with in right mind would say that you are the one who is selfish, who wants illegals to benefit and legal immigrants and their Family to suffer !. dont come here illegally and expect to be rewarded. - mirunit, on 10/11/2007, -2/+16I won't digg you down, but really. Illegal immigration must stop, immigrants that travel to the US legally are regulated which promotes a better enviroment (IE TB avoidance etc). Last time all the illegals proposed a strike to show us how much they mattered all we saw was anarchy and burning American flags. If that was their idea of life without illegal immigrants then I am fine not having them as long as they protest in Mexico opposed to the streets of the United States.
- CGBS6183, on 10/11/2007, -1/+14I do, and I have, I don't hate them. You just don't get it, we have laws respect them, in today's day and age more is at stake now. I will say it again this was not about immigrant hate but this bill was bad. I have seen no hate on hear, dare you to find a derogatory remark about immigrants.
- Vicissidude, on 10/11/2007, -6/+19The selfish ones were the illegal immigrants and their supporters who wanted to take jobs away from poor, uneducated black and white Americans.
Not only was this group selfish, but racist as well for supporting brown skinned people over blacks and white Americans legally in this country. The poor, uneducated black and white workers were called lazy and stupid and told they were not deserving of their jobs. All the while, illegal immigrants were called hardworking, honest, industrious, and just plain better than the black and white people who used to do their work.
Nevermind that this legislation was about pitting blacks and whites against brown workers in order to drive down wages for the benefit of large corporations. - DiggeralToolz, on 10/11/2007, -4/+17Serious immigration reform = enforce the laws that already exist. Bush gets the blame for that.
- codyman, on 10/11/2007, -5/+18I think before they start trying to pass bills like this, they need to start working on legislation that brings in TOUGHER PENALTIES for those who enable illegals to make money in the country... in all honesty, I don't mind paying more for goods / services if it means someone who has legitimately established themselves / is paying taxes is doing the work / making the goods etc.... cause illegals come here, make money, send a lot of it out of the country, and don't pay taxes - something that hurts the economy way more than ponying up a few more bucks to legal laborers...
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+13B.S. This bill was only about one thing. Getting cheap, illegal labor for Big-Ag, the construction, landscaping, and hotel/restaurant lobby. If they want workers, they can do what every other business does and pay legal workers to do the job. It isn't the U.S. Senate's job to hunt for cheap labor, and screw you for thinking it is. Asshat.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+12No, hypocrites like Kennedy are very insulated from any adverse effects of their legislation.
- quattro4444, on 10/11/2007, -2/+13I agree that you can't just deport all these people, but will somebody freaking listen to Neale Boortz?!?! He compares it to a flood in your basement... The first thing you do before figuring any other strategy out is TURN THE WATER OFF!!! We need to secure the borders, then we can have a legitimate conversation about what the next step should be.
- Stemer, on 10/11/2007, -3/+14Hmmmm....Both Hillary and Obama voted to advance the bill. That means Hillary and Obama sided with President Bush on this bill!
Well now .....I think it's time for the leftys to abandon these two Bush sycophants!!!! - Vicissidude, on 10/11/2007, -4/+15This bill had everything to do with globalization, which deals with the free flow of goods, services, and labor.
THAT is why big business Republicans wanted this to pass, so labor could move freely, come to America, and drive wages down. - HappyMax, on 10/11/2007, -1/+12Only white people are against illegal immigration? Who's ignorant?
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -4/+15Since I was against this bill and am a LEGAL immigrant, I guess I must hate myself.
This was a statement against Illegal Immigration NOT Legal Immigration. Once the borders are secured, perhaps we can consider amnesty but not until then. - MisterBobBob, on 10/11/2007, -3/+13This is good. We need to enforce current laws instead of throwing more crap at the problem. This bill would have done nothing but say its okay to break our laws.
- Vicissidude, on 10/11/2007, -2/+12The pushing of this bill was a bipartisan effort from Bush, the Democratic leadership, and the Republican leadership. Voting to allow the bill to proceed by ending debate were 33 Democrats, 12 Republicans and independent Joe Lieberman, Conn.
The defeat of this bill was also a bipartisan effort. Opposing that effort were 37 Republicans, 15 Democrats and independent Bernard Sanders, Vt.
This bill will stay dead when corporate influence in our political process ceases to exist. They were the ultimate beneficiaries from the cheap labor this bill would have created. - addisonmeeks, on 10/11/2007, -1/+11You can't lock up all drug-lords, rapists, murderers, etc., etc. -- we should give them amnesty too. It's either that or the status quo.
The law is the law. The consequences of illegal immigration are unfortunate but so are the consequences of committing murder. - endersadvocate, on 10/11/2007, -2/+12Obama? Hillary? McCain? Kennedy? Kerry?
- DiggeralToolz, on 10/11/2007, -2/+12I would support streamlining the immigration process, but I cannot support granting amnesty to over 12 MILLION breakers of America's laws, and to those who would judge me a racist I would ask you why the illegal Mexicans don't go home and fix their beloved country.
America is for the people who love and respect it, citizens or not. - endustry, on 10/11/2007, -1/+11Agreed. Crack down on those who are employing illegals in place of citizens and the incentive to illegally immigrate here will decline. Independent contractors are particularly bad about hiring illegals because it not only means paying lower wages but if the worker becomes injured on the job, the contractor just fires him and hires another illegal. Meanwhile, the injured guy has to limp back to Mexico where he'll be even less capable of competing for work than he was before.
- lordmike, on 10/11/2007, -6/+15The amnesty thing is a red herring.. the REAL scary part of the bill was the temporary guest worker programs and massive increases in H1B and L1 visas.... I'm glad it went down for that reason...
- Vicissidude, on 10/11/2007, -3/+12Voting to allow the bill to proceed by ending debate were 33 Democrats, 12 Republicans and independent Joe Lieberman, Conn.
It was a bipartisan group that pushed this bill, including Bush and the leadership of both parties.
Opposing that effort were 37 Republicans, 15 Democrats and independent Bernard Sanders, Vt.
It was also a bipartisan group that defeated it. - edstate, on 10/11/2007, -6/+15But not enough votes to make the front page? WTF?
- Vicissidude, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8You're saying everything that we already know and reject.
We care that the Feds don't enforce the law. Those laws are still on the books and they should be enforced. But, that doesn't give the illegal immigrants the right to break those laws. And no, it doesn't give the corporations to break those laws either.
Further, that history demonstrates that this group didn't give a rat's ass about "comprehensive" immigration reform. Their main goal was amnesty, just like the 1986 legislation. And just like the 1986 legislation, they were promising enforcement. But everyone knows that the enforcement provisions would be ignored yet again. - luteslinger, on 10/11/2007, -8/+16US wins first war since 1945. June 28 declared VM Day.
- cryptomystic, on 10/11/2007, -2/+10Just put Paris Hilton in the headline and watch it get 7000 diggs.
- Vicissidude, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8The racists are the people who say that the poor, uneducated black and white Americans are stupid and lazy and do not deserve their jobs.
The racists are the people who then say that the poor, uneducated illegal immigrants are hardworking and honest and industrious and deserve to take the jobs away from the black and white Americans who used to do that work.
Preferring brown skin is just as racist as hating brown skin.
Luckily for most of us here, it is not racism to ask for the enforcement of our laws. - s1mph0ny, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8Shorties, that's beside the point. American businesses should be hiring local workers.
- mos6507, on 10/11/2007, -2/+10Just give up once and for all.....
..and blame your parents too. - Wacer, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7Your analysis could be marked as one of the dumbest I have seen in a while. i know three of the Senators that where hard line in defeating this legislation and their views had nothing to do with grand scheme that you envision. Did you even look at www.senate.gov to see how all the Senators even voted? There was no party line voting on this. I looked as Senators voted on the every amendment and there was no political agenda here. I am not going to elaborate because you obviously didn't even study who voted for what. Your scheme sounds runs in line with conspiracy theorists.
- CGBS6183, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8Actually I like yours too, maybe better than mine I was thinking compromise but heck that solves the problem and gets us more money. But we also need to enforce the laws we have and seal that thing up. Gottta turn the water off before you can drain the tub.
- drmangrum, on 10/11/2007, -2/+9It's not about hating the people. Only the most racist ***** look at a Mexican, Cuban, etc, etc and and spew hate speech. This is about economics. Illegal immigrants ARE taking jobs from low income Americans. Yes, they are jobs most people don't want, but that doesn't means they won't DO the job. I can't think of a single person that WANTS to flip burgers or cut grass, but when push comes to shove they'll do it cuz the rent is eventually due.
Then you have to factor in the other costs.
Education: Children of illegal immigrants are pouring into public schools faster than schools are being built. The parents of said children rarely pay taxes that offset the cost of acquiring land and personnel for new schools and supplies. Due to most of them not knowing english, resources have to be moved around from an already strained budget to accommodate them. In the end, legitimate American and LEGAL alien children suffer.
Healthcare: Due to the laws that force hospitals to stabilize anyone that comes in, illegal immigrants who become sick are injured put a HUGE strain on health care funds. Most don't pay the bills. Who do you think gets the bill in the end? You do.
there are other issue, but frankly it's all been said and that horse has been beaten throughly. -
