- moffie, on 05/12/2008, -37/+417"The state has the lowest college graduation rate in the US..."
- actorboy, on 05/12/2008, -140/+350NEW TITLE: Ignorant Digg submitter calls West Virginians "Hillbillies".
White, non-college-educated Southern voters are hillbillies...but Muslims are not towelheads? Please tell me how your selective racism makes you better than the people written about in the article. - BabushkaBlue, on 05/12/2008, -9/+177Quote from article: “I heard that Obama is a Muslim and his wife’s an atheist,” said Mr Simpson, drawing on a cigarette outside the fire station in Williamson, a coalmining town of 3,400 people surrounded by lush wooded hillsides.
Ahem...How can anyone possibly get through to this kind of person? THIS is why I detest Hillary. This right here. She PROMOTES this kind of thinking with her "as far as I know Obama's not a Muslim" *wink* *wink* talk. - dinot, on 05/12/2008, -12/+174And she flaunts this like a badge. "Stupid, ignorant people love me! Therefor, I am the most qualified person to be President!" She's basically saying that the majority of Americans are stupid and ignorant.
- khail250, on 05/12/2008, -21/+175The majority of Americans are stupid and ignorant, this is why Bush was elected twice.
- dagnabbit, on 05/12/2008, -9/+154This article makes me sad. Especially -
Josh Fry, a 24-year-old ambulance driver from Williamson, insisted he was not racist but said he would feel more comfortable with Mr McCain, the 71-year-old Vietnam war hero, in the White House. “I want someone who is a full-blooded American as president,” he said.
Funny because McCain was born on a military base outside the US, while Obama was born in the US. Not that it matters really - both are "full-blooded American". - chris_moritz, on 05/12/2008, -12/+139So... electability = widest appeal to ignorant, poorly-informed, racists? Hmm...
- Krisgi, on 05/12/2008, -26/+142Is Hillary going to blacken a few teeth and wear flannel pantsuits during her stumps there?
- Vironex, on 05/12/2008, -3/+105“I want someone who is a full-blooded American as president"
So a Native American? - Falldog, on 05/12/2008, -24/+124When did hillbillies become a race?
Racism != Stereotyping - tcbishop12, on 05/12/2008, -30/+133Not so fast on slamming the voting intelligence of the good folks of Appalachia. You have to at least give due credit to a state where dinner can always be found at the side of the road.
- neems25, on 05/12/2008, -18/+107Did you know the toothbrush was invented in WV? If it was invented anywhere else it would have been called a "teethbrush"....extrapolate that!
- SheilaNoya, on 05/12/2008, -33/+119My title didn't say all that white non-college-educated Southern voters are hillbillies. If you bother to read the article, it's about some of the ignorant people living in the rural hills of West Virginia, especially one who "heard that Obama is a Muslim and his wife is an atheist". Call them what you want, but if they live in the remote hills and they are this damn stupid, then they are hillbillies.
Furthermore, I grew up in the South, so I reserve my right to use the terms "cracker", "redneck", and "white trash" when applicable too. - SniperZ, on 05/12/2008, -3/+85Why do people still care what religion people are... This is government, not church.
- inactive, on 05/12/2008, -24/+101White trash is a real problem facing America in the coming decades.
- antoniseb, on 05/12/2008, -4/+76I support Obama, and I think that calling his WV non-supporters 'Hillbillies' is the politics of division that Obama is fighting against. If he hasn't made the case there, hopefully he will eventually. Don't just support him, follow his example.
- samirms, on 05/12/2008, -11/+79As proud as I am to be a West Virginian this is unfortunately true. Too many people in this state are racist, and unfortunately lately it has seemed like the Hillary is fueling this hate. Please read this article on what we have had to put up with in the last weekend alone. http://digg.com/2008_us_elections/Hey_racist_Hilla ...
- nicksargeant, on 05/12/2008, -10/+79The sad thing is, it shouldn't matter whether he is Islamic or not...
- Zoshchenko, on 05/12/2008, -4/+70The problem with stupid people is that they're too stupid to know they're stupid.
- m0tbaillie, on 05/12/2008, -1/+55Actually, historically, the people who settled the Applachian back-country were called 'hillbillies' - not to be confused with what we consider rednecks from the South. They're called hillbillies because West Virginia (the heart of Appalachia) is very, very hilly.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hillbilly - Chompy, on 05/12/2008, -11/+63Any coast beats Jesusland.
- petebot, on 05/12/2008, -6/+62While it is unfortunate that some people are misinformed about Obama, I don't think calling people ignorant hillbillies will help change their mind. This is the exact sort of divisive talk Obama is against. It also fuels the misconception that supporters of Obama are elitist.
- carpespasm, on 05/12/2008, -14/+57I dunno, when 90% of the country is smarter than your state (statistically) i don't think the rest of the nation pointing that out is elitist.
- hackiavelli, on 05/12/2008, -1/+42Ever notice how most racist comments start out with "I'm not a racist but..."?
- Vektuz, on 05/12/2008, -15/+56Since they voted bush in twice
- Chompy, on 05/12/2008, -6/+48What's doubly sad is that even if Obama *was* a Muslim, what the ***** does that have do with anything? His voting record, started platform, and personal conduct are the only things that should matter. Really, they are the only things that do matter unless you're an ignorant bumpkin.
- DreKor, on 05/12/2008, -5/+43Obama believes it is, too. And, so do his supporters. Not having an American flag on your truck does not make you unpatriotic.
- tcbishop12, on 05/12/2008, -18/+55I think due credit needs be given to most of the fine people of West Virginia voting for Hillary, because without them we'd have had 95% fewer guests on the Jerry Springer show.
- juliehardman, on 05/12/2008, -8/+46Its not just in WV. We have some really stupid people here in Ohio too. Unfortunately one of them is in my family and they refuse to hear the truth. Did I mention they only watch Fox News too.
- inactive, on 05/12/2008, -15/+50I KNOW!
Especially since that's been the GOP's bread and butter for decades! - Fallout911, on 05/12/2008, -17/+55Same ***** *****.
Muslims = Insane
Christians = Insane
Uneducated Muslim = Idiot
Uneducated Christian = Idiot
Call me a racist but I like bigot better I despise these people. - jspegele, on 05/12/2008, -5/+39If only West Viriginia hillbillies were our biggest problem. My cousin from Long Island was telling the familiy over dinner all about Obama's teenage years attending a Madrasa in Malaysia. I almost choked to death on the stupidity.
- arowan, on 05/12/2008, -5/+39Sadly, it's not just hillbillies who are ignorant on this issue. This weekend, my father-in-law told me that some guys at the upscale Florida gated community where he spends the winter are parroting this line of *****. Unbelievable.
- actorboy, on 05/12/2008, -5/+36". . . certain people just don´t have the intellectual capacity and exposure needed to make a coherent decision in politics."
This was the same argument used to deny African-Americans the right to vote. Way to paint yourself as someone standing up for the "evolution of our Nation towards progress." - Pimpalicious316, on 05/12/2008, -15/+51on a more serious note, while the people there may not be the best educated, they are well-intentioned. I did some missionary work there (insert "that's what she said" below), and the people I met were some of the most down-to-earth and genuinely kind persons I've ever had the privilege of speaking with. I certainly don't agree with most of their viewpoints, but slamming someone because of a lack of education is quite frankly, stupid.
- hackiavelli, on 05/12/2008, -2/+33An American Indian?
- fin01, on 05/12/2008, -10/+42Here in Tennessee we have our fair share of rednecks, but even WE make fun of West Virginia.
- Vektuz, on 05/12/2008, -5/+36In other words, the reason they dont like him is because they
a) are ignorant, and
b) don't care enough to actually educate themselves about it. - whataboutdave, on 05/12/2008, -9/+39Just Americans?
- mimigins, on 05/12/2008, -2/+30Do you read the ***** you type? Because nobody else can.
- kgsullivan, on 05/12/2008, -3/+31Shouldn't that balance out the Reverend Wright scandal? Or do they think he is a Muslim minister?
- CamperBob, on 05/12/2008, -15/+42Since they started taking every possible opportunity to demonstrate their stupidity, ignorance, and religiosity in the voting booth.
- smotpoker, on 05/12/2008, -5/+31Go randomly ask a bunch of them if they are hillbillies. They take pride in it (at least in Kentucky where I grew up they did). It is like calling deep southerners "rednecks" or northern urban people "yankees". For a certain demographic/lifestyle/culture, such generalizations are not inaccurate or derogatory except in some cases when they are unqualified and state (or imply) everyone
- mnemy, on 05/12/2008, -1/+27He's not racist. He just only wants someone whose blood is from a certain heritage to be president.
Btw, wtf is a full blooded american? - Krisgi, on 05/12/2008, -40/+65No one is talking about "better" just ...mmmm... different. It must be harsh to live in a place where you can´t see the forest for the trees.
And what do Muslims and towels have to do with this?
I believe that we are in a fair position to be critical of those people in OUR country whose retrograde mentality and ignorance affect the evolution of our Nation towards progress. The Hillbillies and the Beverly Hillbillies, as well. Stupidity is unacceptable and not to be pardoned because we all have to pay for it in the end. - pixelguru, on 05/12/2008, -11/+38VW would be classified a 3rd world country if it wasn't part of the US. I lived there for 3 years growing up, but was lucky to get out before suffering any permanent damage.
- RacerX10, on 05/12/2008, -3/+25He said COLLEGE. You are showing HIGH SCHOOL stats.
Pay attention. - inactive, on 05/12/2008, -5/+26It's not that people think he's a Muslim so much, it's that people like you keep saying he's a Muslim when you know damned well he isn't.
