- contractcentral, on 12/07/2007, -10/+31Soft on crime. Soft on illegals. George Bush 2, the sequel.
- allthebest, on 12/07/2007, -4/+21“What's troubling about The Man From Hope 2.0 is what he represents...compassionate conservatism on steroids...Huckabee believes that the biblical obligation to do "good works" extends to using government -- and your tax dollars -- to bring us closer to the Kingdom of Heaven on Earth.” Jonah Goldberg National Review
- weinbob, on 12/07/2007, -2/+18Drudge picked this story up - this is a negative attack ad goldmine. Just this morning on Morning Joe Huckabee was dodging the softballs until the young guy asked "did you favor the pardon" answer "yes" - would make for a good tv commercial - but this article is the mother of all negative material on Huck.
- inthe80s, on 12/07/2007, -2/+14You're right, and there still is, because Huckabee pardoned dozens of convicted killers, not just non violent offenders.
- spikespeigel42, on 12/07/2007, -2/+12I really don't see how this is a bad thing, it makes him look better than Bush in my in mind, because Bush never granted a pardon in Texas. He also made fun of people on death row
http://www.attytood.com/2007/01/please_dont_kill_m ... - miketrin, on 12/07/2007, -10/+20Our prisons are full of non violent people good for this guy. Kudos.
- JohnboiWaltune, on 12/07/2007, -2/+12Religious freaks usually think of themselves as 'judges' of who is guilty or innocent.
- inactive, on 12/07/2007, -2/+11Right. The guy who fails to even understand what a National Intelligence Estimate means is somehow a "better candidate." You guys have got to start trying to pick leaders with at least a modicum of competence.
- oldhick, on 12/07/2007, -2/+11How is reporting the facts a smear story? There are stories that simply document is record on tax increases and they are called smear stories. There are stories about his record on immigration, you call them smear stories. There are stories about his leniency on crime and you call them smear stories.
They are simply documenting his record. Its as if facts that contradict your view of Huckabee are considered smears? If you think the stories are misreporting facts then please correct us. - ibeetle, on 12/07/2007, -2/+11It bothered me when Mr. Huckabee said on the CBS Morning Show (Thurs. Dec.7th 2007)
"My hands were tied. I was dealing with a Parole Board with members on it dating back to Clinton..."
In other words... It was all Clintons' fault. - Elranzer, on 12/07/2007, -16/+25I contend you're a moron.
- Fredtheviking, on 12/07/2007, -3/+11I am not sure this is what brothers me about Huckabee.
- Elranzer, on 12/07/2007, -10/+17Soft on everything... except "protecting marriage." That's good enough for most of the red states. I swear some of those people not only are unaware the Civil War ended, but are still bitter that Lincoln freed the slaves.
- ghostmutt, on 12/07/2007, -6/+13This article implies that none of the pardons Huckabee issued should have been issued, which can't really be true. The logic goes, since Huckabee's clemency rate isn't in step with nearby states, the problem must be him, not the other states. In addition, it fails to discuss the fact that new extensive DNA testing in the US has been overturning convictions in larger numbers. Perhaps the prosecutors in Arkansas are particularly vicious, forcing Huckabee to issue more pardons? Perhaps Arkansas state law has greater maximum sentences than neighboring states? Perhaps Huckabee should be commended for his mercy, rather than vilified? All in all, a one sided, poorly researched article.
- welk, on 12/07/2007, -7/+14And don't forget, unless he stops gay marriage, all civilization will end
- oldhick, on 12/07/2007, -2/+8I would say most all of the stories about Huckabees record on immigration, crime, taxes, and Chuck Norris should be reason enough. Why is it that with the wealth of information available on Huckabee, we have to sum it up for you??
- halavais, on 12/07/2007, -1/+7Again, "smear jobs" suggest attempts to create a false impression by dummying up facts (e.g., Swiftboating). Examining a person's record as an elected official is called "being an informed voter."
- cramtod, on 12/07/2007, -0/+5He's unqualified in that he doesn't believe in the first amendment.
"I think that students also should be given exposure to the theories not only of evolution but to the basis of those who believe in creationism."
- Gov. Huckabee July 2004 on Arkansans Ask, Arkansas Educational Television Network - minoss, on 12/07/2007, -0/+5Well a candidate's political history IS an issue. How they have acted in their political career in the past is often a good indicator of how they will act in the future. However, what needs to stop is the crap that has absolutely nothing to do with their political history such as religious beliefs, infidelity, or whether they think they saw a UFO.
- THEROC, on 12/07/2007, -1/+6too bad he will crack down on nonviolent crimes.
he increased taxes on tabacco and alcohol as governor and wants to smoking and medical marihuana to be outlawed among other things which he deems to be bad. - MisterEX, on 12/07/2007, -2/+7Wait, what did you say?
- cybermort, on 12/07/2007, -2/+6***** huckabee and ***** the rise of an American theocracy.
- inactive, on 12/07/2007, -1/+5I see. A simple answer, even if it shows and immoral decision-making process, is better than a full discussion of one's position on a topic. I guess you're also excited that Huckabee doesn't know what a National Intelligence Estimate (NIE) is?
Republicans should stop rewarding the incompetent just because they "speak their minds." - jbmcb, on 12/07/2007, -4/+8Standard politicking. There will be hit pieces on everyone out in six month's time. Why focus on issues? They require reading more than a few sentences and thinking.
- THEROC, on 12/07/2007, -5/+9His Taxrecord is just as bad:
He increased the sales tax by about 50%; expanded the sales tax to cover dozens of services; increased the state corporation income tax; imposed a 16% tax on snuff; increased cigarette taxes five times; enacted a "tourism tax"; increased the state gasoline tax four times; increased vehicle registration fees; imposed an income tax "surcharge"; taxed chewing tobacco and cigars; increased the tax on diesel fuel; and even more than doubled the fee charged to 16-year-olds for drivers' licenses. - KnightMareInc, on 12/07/2007, -0/+4liberals wouldnt be complaining about being "soft on crime", this smear is from the right.
- jeremyduffy, on 12/07/2007, -1/+5"Right or wrong, he beileves in his convictions"
Woah buddy. This is exactly the kind of thinking that led to Bush's second term. From now on, I'll take my chances on the guy who won't hold a position over the guy who's position is clearly wrong. - inactive, on 12/07/2007, -0/+4Forgiveness? No, this is releasing people because of political partisanship. He released violent offenders that went on to commit more crimes, over and over again. He shows that he has NO ability to run the country. He just releases criminals willy-nilly with no thought of the future. Bottom line: people are dead because of his "forgiveness."
- animal71, on 12/07/2007, -2/+6I guess you'd then have ***** stories about wrongly accused people losing their lives instead. Would that make you happy?
- halavais, on 12/07/2007, -0/+4I wish people--especially those on digg--would understand what "free speech" guarantees, which is the ability to have your voice heard. It does not guarantee that people are going to agree with you or like what you say. I may not agree with what you say, but I will fight for your ability to say it. I won't fight for your right to get diggs, though, that's not how it works.
I believe that Elranzer was pointing out that an empty endorsement (your contention gave no viable reason to believe that he is a better candidate) can be answered with an empty critique (Elranzer gives no viable reason to believe that you are, in fact, moronic). - Pblock, on 12/07/2007, -0/+3I live in Arkansas, I often forget that the rest of the country probably isn't aware of how he works. He did however do one great thing in this state. He took measures to get junk food out of our elementary schools in Arkansas and other things to try and fight childhood obesity. Other than that, I'm not a fan. By principle I don't know that I can vote for someone who doesn't believe in evolution, for me it is the intellectual equivalent of voting for a flat world theorist.
- inactive, on 12/08/2007, -0/+3***** 2008
- burtonbe, on 12/07/2007, -2/+5Hasn't the prevailing opinion on Digg been that the USA imprisons too many people?
Why are we suddenly outraged that some are freed? - inactive, on 12/07/2007, -0/+3Yeah, but Huckabee didn't just release non-violent offenders. He released a disproportionately large (when compared to other states) amount of violent offenders. Sorry, but he's a piece of crap.
- matador3, on 12/07/2007, -1/+4Huck is pro-death penalty and pro-war.
- john2kx, on 12/07/2007, -0/+3This is the last thing that worries me about this high and mighty bible-thumper.
- demonsnake69, on 12/07/2007, -0/+3LIBERAL MEDIA! LIBERAL MEDIA! IT'S GOING TO EAT YOU!
- InfiniteNothing, on 12/07/2007, -0/+3The burden of proof lies with those that believe there is evidence for a pardon.
- quaxon, on 12/07/2007, -0/+3"Don't think average americans (not the 95% of you left wingnuts) don't see when people give straight answers and stand by their convictions."
Which is why most americans are idiots and shouldnt be allowed to vote without passing some kind of test. We need a leader who is not afraid to change his/her stance when new information comes to light or the public reacts negatively to one of their decisions (after all, they are elected to represent US). Choosing a person just because they are hot-headed and stubborn is a very ignorant thing to do. - JoeVet, on 12/07/2007, -0/+2Maybe we should choose some one who acts on the facts. These faith based decisions are ruining this country. Bring intelligence to the White House. Vote no to Huckaby!
- armyabn1, on 12/07/2007, -0/+2Did YOU read the article??? It clearly states that he commuted the sentences of only 6 murderers, not "dozens" and the article gives absolutely NO background on ANY of the cases. It is a slander piece - it gives no information to support the numbers, other than those were the numbers reported. And it compares him to incompetent piece of ***** Blanco??? Please......
- Acewrap, on 12/07/2007, -0/+2It's not fear. We're laughing at you.
- JoeVet, on 12/07/2007, -0/+2Do you really believe Jesus would approve of the Republicans? Wow! I guess I missed the part about stomping on the little guy when I read the Book.
- ThyLabyrinth, on 12/07/2007, -0/+2McCain or Ron Paul!?!?!?!? Damn, I had to re-read that a couple of times + had a chuckle.
I guess the war is not your concern then (as their visions about it differ 180°), right? - halavais, on 12/07/2007, -1/+3Agree with Ramiro: I think Huckabee's record in Arkansas--which seems to be some real progress while working with a legislature of the other party, mixed with several ethics scandals--is absolutely fair game for deciding how he might work as president. But assuming that the only reason he gave more pardons is that he is soft on crime seems to ignore a range of other possibilities, ranging from population to economics to differences in law.
- Dweller99, on 12/07/2007, -1/+3It's likely in response to "hucks army" spamming Digg with pro-huckabee articles.
- inactive, on 12/07/2007, -2/+4when he's commuting murderers' sentences by the dozens, it matters. Did you read the article? He commuted sentences of rapists, murders, other violent offenders, drunk drivers, etc. Not just people who got caught with 5 grams of weed. In fact, at one of debates he advocated jailing MORE drug offenders and setting up MORE courts to specifically deal with them.
Huckabee: wrong for America. - Spuy767, on 12/07/2007, -1/+3They cherry picked one particular incedent where the wrong choice was made. Then, they state vagueries about him releasing felons. Actually, huckabee has pardonned many people in prison over marijuana possession charges, i.e. ounce or less.
- inactive, on 12/07/2007, -0/+2Yeah, and the fact that whenever something scandalous comes out it hits digg for a few days (Giuliani's misuse of city funds? Yeah, that was on for about 3 or 4 days). It's not just Huckabee, it's anyone.
- funklor, on 12/07/2007, -0/+2Haha, a Christian that may actually walk the walk and he's lambasted by other fanatics who only talk the talk.
