- corevette, on 01/01/2008, -39/+199i'm pissed off americans care more about abortion rights/gay marriage/etc. over stuff like foreign policy and their past voting record
- rhabd0mancer, on 01/01/2008, -23/+137I wonder if Huckabee the nutty christian realizes that nutty christian women are responsible for the majority of abortions in the US.
- Rikushix, on 01/01/2008, -11/+100I'm pissed off that you regard basic civil liberties as mere trivialities. But hey, I'm Canadian, what do I know?
- inactive, on 01/01/2008, -15/+86Embryo: 0 to 3 months.
Foetus: 3 months and over.
I made the same argument yesterday.
Morality can only be applied to things that feel. An embryo has nothing to feel with. It's like a plant. It doesn't have thoughts, memories or even senses.
And they don't suck out the brains of embryos because embryos don't have a brain. They suck the embryo out, a 5 to 10 mm large clump of cells.
After three months, the baby becomes a foetus, the brain and nervous system start to develop. It can then be argued that it feels, I would disagree with that, but it doesn't matter. 3 months is something anyone with any actual knowledge of the gestation process can agree with. And that's what the law is based on.
The most basic human right is that you have the right to decide what to do with your body. An embryo is like a growth. It's part of you and is therefore part of your body. The right to receive an abortion is and should be entirely left to the decision of the mother. Forcing people into compliance is the most basic infringement of human rights.
This only becomes a complex issue when you introduce religious concepts like the soul and "what god wants". Things that don't exist.
And then you have all the arguments in favor of the abortion of unwanted babies. The psychological effects of being unwanted by your own parents are very well documented. You can also add the social costs of orphanages, adoption processes and it's mistakes, the inherent misery of life on earth, overpopulation, pollution, and also the fact that giving birth involves forcing a thinking and feeling being to eventually suffer and die. - rhabd0mancer, on 01/01/2008, -5/+73Jones RK, Darroch JE and Henshaw SK, Patterns in the socioeconomic characteristics of women obtaining abortions in 2000-2001, Perspectives on Sexual and Reproductive Health, 2002, 34(5):226-235.
- sonnybobiche, on 01/01/2008, -1/+41@vector713: No, it's true. I read the whole thing, and I wish it were wrong, but it's not. Even the methods were impressively thorough. Then again, we should have known this. High rate of abortion is correlated with poverty, poverty is correlated with religious belief.
- Catbert107, on 01/01/2008, -8/+48What about a rape victim?
- sonnybobiche, on 01/01/2008, -2/+39Indeed. Great shame overcomes me.
- AbbyRoad, on 01/01/2008, -6/+37What if the fetus was gay? Would abortion be ok then?
- Bartboy919, on 01/01/2008, -3/+33Pwnt.
- heysuburbia, on 01/01/2008, -2/+32"I support Mike Huckabee because I believe Americans want a new beginning, to feel good about their country again and to see some new proposals and solutions - which Mike Huckabee uniquely promises to deliver."
That is such a canned ***** comment. "Americans want a new beginning..." is your reason? EVERY candidate promotes themselves as a new "change", "beginning", "start", etc...
Huckabee will pick up where Bush left off, no change, no fresh start, same old *****. The guy is very well spoken, confident, and like-able. That doesn't make him a good president. - Fafnir43, on 01/02/2008, -1/+28Bravo for a) actually reading the source and b) admitting the other guy was right. That's a rare trait on the Internet.
- heysuburbia, on 01/01/2008, -7/+34Why on earth would the government have any right to tell a woman what to do? They value life, right? These are the same politicians that chalk up 100,000 dead Iraqi civilians to "collateral damage". It's not about "life" it's about religious beliefs.
- inactive, on 01/01/2008, -8/+34If there was a way to find out whether your child was straight or gay, I bet the support for abortion would rise...
- rhabd0mancer, on 01/01/2008, -5/+31Thankfully, you have no say in the matter.
- inactive, on 01/01/2008, -7/+32What if that parent finds out she has AIDS and will die while the kid is young?
What if that person finds out the kid could only lead a very short and miserable life because of genetic predispositions that lead to incurable illnesses?
What if the condom broke?
Some things in life are beyond your control. Like where you were born, for instance. - schroderr224, on 01/01/2008, -11/+36Why are we just buying Huckabee's claim that he's Christian? Why would he need to tell us over and over and over again? Isn't that what the devil would do?
- sonnybobiche, on 01/01/2008, -12/+37Source?
- whyufail, on 01/01/2008, -1/+23Of course! Gay fetuses aren't human, only the straight ones. So sayeth the mystical sky wizard!
- Nosnevets02, on 01/01/2008, -4/+26I'm pissed off because people think issues are merely black and white with no gray area whatsoever. There are so many controversial issues that a government has no way of handling them perfectly. What happens when a woman is raped? What happens when the mother's life is threatened? There are so many different circumstances its ridiculous...
Why have the government involved in such an extremely delicate issue? - Napoleone, on 01/01/2008, -0/+202008... meet the Troll Master.
- PoliceAtaque, on 01/02/2008, -1/+21Dugg for being the first person I've seen to actually cite a source on digg.
- DavidinBoston, on 01/01/2008, -1/+21The president has a HUGE amount of control over the future of abortion rights. HE OR SHE PICKS SUPREME COURT JUSTICE NOMINEES.
- sonnybobiche, on 01/01/2008, -0/+19I read it. It was just in general, not proportionately, but his point that christians are responsible for a higher number of abortions than non-christians is factually accurate, which is disheartening.
- bowens44, on 01/02/2008, -0/+18Huckabee a new beginning? It's more of the same old neo-con , bible thumping , bigoted, pig ignorant *****. We've had quite enough of his ilk thank you very much.
- inactive, on 01/01/2008, -10/+27Vote Ron Paul!
- Ryan121, on 01/01/2008, -4/+20Those views are so backwards and ignorant. How could anyone want someone as close minded as that as president.
- Ramble, on 01/01/2008, -2/+18I think he means that it is so ridiculous to even debate such a basic human rights issue.
- inactive, on 01/01/2008, -3/+18I never mentioned euthanasia and you seem to not know what condoning means.
But if you must know, I'm all for euthanasia. I wish I could have the right to die as peacefully as my dog did. - ResonantToe, on 01/01/2008, -5/+20The religious argument for abortion always makes me laugh. Why is it that these people are so concerned about my life choices and how they affect the after life?
The very same group that will proclaim that it does not infringe on personal freedoms would deny me the very right to be immoral and a sinner (in their eyes) and go to hell. This may be exactly what I want to do, and as long as it doesn't impede on your own PERSONAL goal to do whatever the hell it is you do, why do you have to impede on my personal choices?
But the questions are rhetorical, because its not about saving souls or doing the right thing, Religion is (for this type of person) and always has been a controlling mechanism, it is much easier to control one common mindset than learn the differences and the drives of many. - satx, on 01/01/2008, -7/+22Except he wouldn't force his views on everyone. Big difference.
- inactive, on 01/01/2008, -5/+19"You have to prove that statement in order for the rest of your argument to be valid."
I can't believe someone would argue that morality could be applied to things that neither think nor feel, but why not.
When was the last time you cried because a rock broke appart? Where are the people for ethical treatment of vegetation?
Objects and things that don't feel don't have rights. Plants don't have rights, bugs don't have rights, rocks don't have rights, telephones don't have rights, et cetera.
You cantt commit an immoral act on something that doesn't think or feel simply because it's not even aware of its own existence. It can't even feel what you do to it or even know that you are doing something to it.
Removing a growth implies killing a growth. Growths don'T have rights.
You don't allow ***** to parents because you have no right or priviledges on parents. And in any case, if you don't have a baby, you're not a parent.
The homeless guy thinks and feels you disgusting bastard. - chaosium, on 01/02/2008, -1/+15"13% of abortion patients describe themselves as born-again or Evangelical Christians.......
I didn't know this was most?"
I see you're an idiot who believes born-agains/Evangelicals are the only "true" Christians. - inactive, on 01/01/2008, -6/+20"A five week old embryo has a heartbeat, which means it AT THE VERY LEAST has low level neural activity."
You mean like a fly or mosquito? Ok, I'll give you that. Now cry about all the bugs that died today. - Urusai, on 01/01/2008, -4/+17What you people don't realize is that his ridiculous rhetoric plays well with the same morons who voted for Bush. I still think he'll take the GOP nomination.
- inactive, on 01/02/2008, -1/+14I never claimed to be a philosophy professor. I call those people clowd shovelers.
My mastering of english, being my thrid language, has absolutely no impact on the validity of my argumentation.
I could write in lolcat and still be right about everything. You failed to demonstrate how any of my arguments were fallacies.
I've never seen anyone commit so many fallacies in so little time.
Mais, si tu veux, je peux continuer le débat en Français. J'aime autant t'avertir, mes arguments n'en seront que mieux prononcés et encore plus forts. - sv650touring, on 01/02/2008, -0/+13I find that when people try their best to convince the world that they are one way (church fundraisers, chrome fish emblems on their cars, WWJD t-shirt), it usually turns out they are the opposite of that. I think Christians that live by the Bible don't grandstand about it. The megachurch televangelists are the ones you need to worry about.
Same thing applies to picking up women. Slutty girls = shy in bed. Good girls = freaky-deaky - finalcloud33, on 01/01/2008, -12/+24I swear to God that if someone says "Vote Ron Paul" I may just kill somebody
- staticneuron, on 01/01/2008, -0/+12No one is implying that, he was just sating our policies are messed up. I bet you would have a different opinion if while we are arguing over our civil liberties our higher ups decide it would be a great idea to invade canada. I am pretty sure we would have no real great reason to do so..... but then again my country is in iraq right now.
- Ramble, on 01/01/2008, -2/+14No, but they get bollocked when they do.
- Ramble, on 01/01/2008, -2/+14Sickness is defined as an impairment that affects an orgasism. You first have to prove that being gay is an impairment.
And Fox news, my god, do you get all your facts there? A 3 year old could give you an impartial account. - inactive, on 01/01/2008, -4/+16I hope you don't mind if I use your comment for the class I'll teach on logical fallacies next semester.
A comatose patient is a human being, not an embryo. A coma is a temporary state of unconsciousness, it's not the same as not being able to feel. Comatose patients have neurological activity which suggest that they keep thinking and feeling but are in perpetual state of sleep.
Your comparison is completely false. There are no reasons to kill a comatose patient. There are thousands of reasons that can warrant an abortion.
What it will become has absolutely no impact on what it is. I could make the same argument about an orange. I eat an orange, my body produces sperm, sperm will eventually impregnate a woman and therefore killing sperm is immoral. It's a false argument.
What could be and what may be and what will be have absolutely no impact on a reality that belongs to a specific time called the present.
Also, that wasn't a reducto absurdium. - ResonantToe, on 01/01/2008, -2/+13I'll go with ElAssoWipo on this one and add that it is still far from some religious group or person to make such decisions about whether I am committing an atrocity. What appears to have been completely thrown out in the current presidential race in the U.S is the seperation of Church, State and Law!
The very second a candidate refers to God in any context should be cause for concern. You do not want someone who has ideological beliefs at the forefront of their decision making, making your decisions, cause sure as eggs at some point, your ideology and theirs will conflict - inactive, on 01/01/2008, -5/+16Condoning means to make excuses for, to be lenient with, or make allowances for.
Btw, you are like an encyclopedia of fallacies. That was a strawman. Stay on topic.
Embryos aren't sentient. Stop making these false comparisons.
Also, euthanasia means to kill a person or animal in a humane or painless way to end their suffering. It has to do with things that can suffer.
An abortion prevents all suffering.
Please keep coming up with these, seriously, you're a fallacy gold mine and I need a large database of fallacy examples. - inactive, on 01/01/2008, -2/+13Except an embryo is not a child or a human being and killing something that doesn't feel or think cant constitute murder or an atrocity.
All religious arguments are unreasonnable by definition. - allanstrings, on 01/02/2008, -0/+11100% true... also true for a laundry list of conditions and predispositions that we don't have prenatal tests for. America is full of hypocrites who feel very strongly about an issue until they actually have to deal with it in their own lives.
- atheinostic, on 01/02/2008, -0/+11The Democrats aren't above whoring out their Christianity either. Excepting Mike Gravel, of course.
- RTFishUL, on 01/01/2008, -4/+15I'm really not a fan of this guy whatsoever, but I was surprised by this interview...
I mean, I strictly disagree with just about every little thing he says, but he handled himself very well and answered the questions without seeming too ridiculous. That I think is what scares me.
Pretend you don't have the knowledge to know that what he's saying is ignorant. If you don't know any better, he seems like a logical and calm person. He didn't come out (no pun intended) yelling "homosexuality is evil and all homosexuals are demons" he played it off saying "well no one is perfect, we are all trying to be better people." Obviously, this is a giant load of bullsh*t, but I fear that a large number of Americans won't see it that way. - skyfire1, on 01/01/2008, -5/+15Huckabots mark this as inaccurate in 3,2,1...
- chaosium, on 01/02/2008, -0/+10"Poverty is correlated with religious belief?? What?? Let me guess: you are one of the ones whose skin crawls off your body when someone is reading the Bible next to you ~ ? I'm no Bible thumper here"
You're no "Bible thumper", however you are an idiot who has no idea what "correlation" means.
Try buying a dictionary one day before flipping your wig. -
