- LeftieLucy, on 03/24/2009, -22/+106Actually, Huck, having the state force women and girls to carry unwanted pregnancies to term sounds more like slavery to me.
- freedomjoe, on 03/24/2009, -21/+67GOP drove itself off the cliff, jumped the shark, whatever a while ago. Listen to them lately! Michelle Bachmann calling for her district to get "armed and dangerous" over a budget....Bill O'Reilley stalking people and getting all steamy and dirty, Huckabee thinks he can win with abortion is like slavery.....though zygotes don't vote...shhhh.....tea bag parties celebrating the opposite of the boston tea party but they don't know it.....could these folks parody themselves anymore? Oh, and Palin sayin' thanks but no thanks but yes thanks to the stim money, claiming she had built the pipeline (and her bots repeating it all over digg) but the deal hasn't even been made yet because of the socialist way she taxed the oil companies to appease her populist constituents (spread the oil company wealth around) all while she screams "socialist!" and dick chency...dick! shoot 'em in the face cheney, telling us all how unsafe we are.
never mind, dick, that we were attacked many times under the "watchful" eye of you and the (drunk) golf player...anthrax and 911 and then you took all of our rights away under the guise of "freedom" in a Ministry of Truth distortion Orwell would be so proud....
Oh, the GOP. HYPOCRISY WALKING. - rayen99, on 03/25/2009, -6/+35Why are people surprised by this? If one believes that a human fetus deserves the same rights as an adult human, then killing that fetus must be murder. If one believes abortion is murder than it can be equated to horrors of the past such as slavery. Just about any pro-lifer is going to agree with Huckabee.
- pintomp3, on 03/25/2009, -4/+32Why not? Social conservatives wanted slavery to be left up to the states also.
- inactive, on 03/25/2009, -10/+32I'm so tired of the "what if your parents" line of reasoning. If my parents had chosen to abort me, then I wouldn't be here and I wouldn't know that difference. That's what if.
- DaigojiGai, on 03/24/2009, -5/+25AMEN Freedom Joe... Amen... God it makes me less terrified about the future of this country that some people have the intelligence to see thru the one-color and white wash friendly GOP.
- neocreo, on 03/25/2009, -6/+24No it is not. It takes a license to own a dog, it takes a license to drive a car, but any ***** is allowed to become a parent, whether they are ready for this responsibility or not.
Humans are already breeding out of control, even with birth control. Abortion is not immoral or wrong. It is people taking responsibility and saying "I cannot have this baby". People are not forced to have sex, except with rape, but even contraceptives are not 100% safe.
and oh, abstinence does NOT work either, as when the time comes "it will feel so right that people do it anyway". Abstinence was dreamed up by people who could not get a date to save their life on a saturday night.
Oh and Huckabee is full of it. - LordBalderdash, on 03/25/2009, -2/+19what would anyone expect from an ordained minister who believes in biblical inerrancy?
not only does he believe without a doubt in noah's ark - he believes there were ***** dinosaurs on it. - philosophyzombi, on 03/24/2009, -14/+30One more for the crank file . . .
- Alheithinn, on 03/24/2009, -16/+31A racist and a bigot all in one package. What a guy.
- scottknick, on 03/24/2009, -13/+28As the GOP base becomes a smaller and smaller pocket of fevered ideologues, the candidates for 2012 are going to have to sound more and more extreme in order to keep them happy. I believe the geeks call it "Terminal Embrace."
- utopianlady, on 03/24/2009, -15/+30This man has lost his mind and it's appropriate he's part of the Fox News propaganda.
- JohnAdams999, on 03/25/2009, -4/+18GOP's last two chances at power are in Jindal and Huckabee.
In other words, the GOP is screwed. - lostlyrics, on 03/25/2009, -3/+16mrs hippie says you forgot 'sexist'
- inactive, on 03/24/2009, -8/+21Killing people you disagree with to protect "life." That pretty much sums up the hypocrisy, and anti-American values, of the Christian right.
- calebian, on 03/25/2009, -4/+17I Don't <3 Huckabee
- wjappe, on 03/24/2009, -15/+27Why do we (or someone) listen to people like this? Really?
- bicyclethief, on 03/25/2009, -4/+15All that's left is to liken abortion to Hitler...
- fugazied, on 03/25/2009, -5/+14Individual rights supersede whatever your invisible friend aka god told YOU to do. YOU have no right to tell other people what to do. GTFO.
- cathars1s, on 03/25/2009, -5/+14agreed. what's more surprising is that the Huffington Post doesn't realize that there's a large part of the country that would say abortion is worse than slavery - it's murder. This isn't a fringe movement, people.
- fxu1989, on 03/25/2009, -6/+15I can say the same but the opposite. Maybe we're saving lives by aborting the next Hitler?
Phew... thank goodness we got rid of that baby. Next.
Since I know you're not gonna pick it up: /s - Suricou, on 03/25/2009, -1/+9This looks considerably worse when you realise the Huckabee seeks to ban every abortion without exception, including in those cases in which abortion is the only means of saving the life of a woman. Even for a pro-lifer, he position is an extreme one.
I've noticed that pro-life leadership seems to take a far more extreme position (no abortion, no exceptions) than the majority of self-declared pro-lifers, who are opposed to abortion but willing to admit there may be some exceptions. - inactive, on 03/25/2009, -4/+12I liken Huckabee to a 3 year old with brain damage
- MrChunks, on 03/25/2009, -0/+8Only if you consider life to begin at conception.
- Suricou, on 03/25/2009, -0/+7Ah, I see you are in one of those fantasy worlds where every abortion can be identified as a consequence of a slut who couldn't keep her legs closed.
Well, welcome to reality: It's not like that. Many abortions are for medical reasons. Complications of pregnancy, possibly life-threatening - anything from weak hearts that might fail under the stress to estopic pregnancy to an inconveniently timed occurance of cancer requiring pregnency-ending chemotherepy to treat. A smaller number are for victims of rape. Sometimes abortion is chosen because the embryo or fetus has a serious developmental flaw. You can't just declare that the problem can be solved by not having sex. That's a very simplistic and inaccurate view of the situation. - inactive, on 03/25/2009, -3/+10If my parents had aborted me, I wouldn't know the difference, because I never would have existed, you ***** idiot. Think before you speak.
- sildude, on 03/25/2009, -0/+7At least when you're a slave there's hope that one day you'll be free. When you're dead, thats it.
- uRmyHartBstopR, on 03/25/2009, -2/+9Ha! Make it illegal and we'll see all teen using coat hangers to get those embryo out. It's more like slavery to tell a person's pussy what it can or cannot do.
- InnerBlueAbyss, on 03/25/2009, -3/+10Hasn't this man lost two elections so far? Great way to prepare for your third attempt.
- Suricou, on 03/25/2009, -0/+7It's been done. Frequently. Very frequently.
Ironically, one of the first things the Nazi party did after coming to power was to pass a law banning all elective abortion.
They later passed laws creating exceptions for jews and other undesireables. But they still forbade abortion for everyone else.
Their action was motivated largely by a forseen need to breed lots of Aryan babies to populate the lands they were expecting to invade. The promise of a ban on abortion was also an effective way to grab the vote of abortion opponents, and espicially of churches - this was pre-holocaust, so the party didn't look too bad at the time. - azureskies88, on 03/25/2009, -5/+11There is a reasoning to what you're saying, blackops - you just seem to have no idea what it is. Banning abortion (with exceptions for rape and the endangerment of the mother's life) is not parallel to slavery because people are given the choice of engaging in behavior that may result in pregnancy or not. It's simply a matter of whether the unborn child's "life" or the mother's free choice takes precedence. I tend to opt for the latter, but I can understand the argument of both sides.
- apetrie, on 03/25/2009, -1/+7Its actually not that simple. We have biological urges, women do not always have a choice, and teenagers have no brains at all. Telling people not to have sex has proven not to work. Your moral indignation will do ***** all to change that, and if we did things your way naive little girls would still be dying in dark alleys because they felt they had no choice, or their lives were about to fall apart.
I love how you dump the entire responsibility on the woman too. You're right, this whole problem exists because women are sluts! /s
Personally, I'm not religious, but I almost wish there was a hell so self righteous ***** like yourself would get a nice surprise when you woke up in a different place than you expect. The funny part is how moral you think you are. Well.. by funny I mean sad. - Swivelstick, on 03/25/2009, -8/+14@blackopsfreak how many unwanted babies have you adopted? If none shut the ***** up.
- Suricou, on 03/25/2009, -1/+7Nice demonstration of the straw man there.
LeftyLuxy: I claim X!
Pinchduck: But Y is wrong, and Y looks a bit like X, therefore X is wrong. - theSAMOL, on 03/25/2009, -2/+8You get your person status when you exit the womb, not before.
- enantiodromia, on 03/25/2009, -1/+7do you honestly think conservatives don't get their daughter abortions as well?
- drstock, on 03/25/2009, -3/+9He's like a kid who's parents are fighting. He'll say anything just to get some attention.
- LeftieLucy, on 03/25/2009, -0/+6Oh, I love that it's just the women who are ***** around irresponsibly in your world. I've got news for you - if a woman is pregnant, it means she was ***** a man. If it was irresponsible, it was a woman and a man who were irresponsible. Women aren't the only ones to blame for unintended pregnancies.
- leif77, on 03/25/2009, -1/+7If abortions were legal and easily accessible... and better sex education and safe sex techniques taught at schools... there would be less people my age (21) struggling to make ends meet, and more people my age going to school and getting their degrees and joining the workforce to stimulate the economy... there is no downside to abortion. Millions upon millions of could be, would be, should be, children get flushed down the toilet every year and no one is shaking their fists at nature taking its course, but God forbid someone gets rid of it on purpose... you children need to grow up and realize that just because something could be a living being doesn't mean it has to be. I'd rather a woman get an abortion than have a dumpster baby. Not every single environment is a suitable one to raise a child. And if you're only against it because your god doesn't like it then ponder this... "Make ready to slaughter his sons for the guilt of their fathers; Lest they rise and posses the earth, and fill the breadth of the world with tyrants.” (Isaiah 14:21 NAB)
That's from your little collection of stories... And above all that, if you are a man, you have no ***** say in the matter. We men don't know, and will never know, what it's like to give birth to a child... so there is nothing we can say that matters on the subject, so shut the ***** up. - inactive, on 03/25/2009, -0/+6JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. -- Former Arkansas governor and Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee likened abortion to slavery in a Monday speech during a fundraiser for an anti-abortion group.
Huckabee said that when it abolished slavery, the U.S. debated and decided it was immoral for one person to have complete, life-or-death power over another. He said that should not change whether the control involves racial bigotry or a pregnant woman making a decision for her unborn child.
"What are we saying to the generation coming after us when we tell them that it is perfectly OK for one person to own another human being?" Huckabee said. "I thought we dealt with that 150 years ago when the issue of slavery was finally settled in this country, and we decided that it no longer was a political issue, it wasn't an issue of geography, it was an issue of morality. That it was either right or it was immoral that one person could own another human being and have full control even to the point of life and death over that other human being."
He said civilization cannot survive if "one group of people have life and death control over another for no particular reason other than their own conveniences and, in that case, prejudices."
The half-hour speech was the keynote address during a luncheon fundraiser for the Jefferson City-based Vitae Caring Foundation. The organization, created in 1991, sponsors advertisements across the country encouraging women to seek alternatives to abortion.
Huckabee was the governor of Arkansas from 1996-2007 before launching an unsuccessful bid for the White House in 2008. He has written a book and is a commentator for the Fox News Channel and ABC Radio Networks.
Missouri NAACP President Mary Ratliff, who said she learned of Huckabee's remarks when contacted by The Associated Press after the speech, said the comparison of abortion to slavery was "apples to oranges" and called it offensive to use the issue of slavery for an unrelated political point.
"It seems to me now that when folks want to object to some kind of morality type of issue, they want to attach it to slavery," Ratliff said.
Huckabee said his ultimate goal is the enactment of a federal constitutional amendment "that protects every human life from the point of conception until its natural conclusion." But to make government action possible, he said society must first change the way it views abortions.
"Before laws get changed, we have to change minds and hearts of all the American people, but especially those who will ultimately make the decision as to whether or not they will give an unborn child life or whether they will give it a death sentence," he said.
To make his point, Huckabee examined the degree to which American culture and laws have changed in four different issues compared with the mainstream opinion before national public awareness campaigns. He said:
--Advertisements featuring a crying American Indian helped encourage motorists not to litter.
--Ads with crash test dummies have led to more people wearing seat belts.
--Extensive smoking cessation advertising has helped reduce cigarette use and make the practice less socially acceptable.
--Mothers Against Drunk Driving has helped draw attention to the dangers of intoxicated drivers.
Huckabee was to speak again at a Monday evening dinner for the group, and the event's organizers hoped to raise $400,000. - Ghostalker, on 03/25/2009, -4/+9I'm sure black people appreciate this. Great way to get votes.
- hooah212002, on 03/25/2009, -1/+6jimv1983:
you sir, need a dictionary.
Until then, your point is moot. - inactive, on 03/25/2009, -1/+6Jennifer,
While such actions would be regrettable, I can see the time possibly coming when it will become necessary to have a civil war over the issue of continued infanticide in the country.
If some adults - complicit in the murder of over 500K babies every year - must die in that purge, I find it ironic but hardly contradictory. To save the lives of the truly innocent children, that sad irony might become necessary. - Zippo, on 03/25/2009, -2/+7Wasn't it the highly conservative, overly religious people of history who were the ones who advocated slavery?
And I bet that, if an unwanted pregnancy were to happen of these very people, they'd believe it was ok for THEM to get an abortion.
Check this out... stories from clinics about self-righteous "pro-lifers": http://mypage.direct.ca/w/writer/anti-tales.html - ackack, on 03/25/2009, -2/+7What a hypocrite!
The Bible allows slavery.
"However, you may purchase male or female slaves from among the foreigners who live among you. You may also purchase the children of such resident foreigners, including those who have been born in your land. You may treat them as your property, passing them on to your children as a permanent inheritance. You may treat your slaves like this, but the people of Israel, your relatives, must never be treated this way." (Leviticus 25:44-46) - TheUngod, on 03/25/2009, -1/+6Sad he thinks fetuses deserve rights, but when his son slaughters a dog that's perfectly OK. Classy guy.
- arvvvs, on 03/25/2009, -1/+6Sorry but China blocks HuffPo, so can somebody post it?
I don't get the analogy though. Even when I try to see it through the perspective of a conservative, it doesn't make sense.
Stick to the Jokes Hucakabee. You could have made a good standup. - inactive, on 03/25/2009, -2/+7Well, then masturbating should be reason enough to put you in jail.
It's just matter with the potential to be something. - AgeofMastery, on 03/25/2009, -6/+11Kinda like having to carry your rapist's baby for nine monthes like this duechbag wants to make you do.
- Tuto, on 03/25/2009, -1/+6What's this ***** about the woman having to take all the responsibility? I say ***** that lets force the man also to take responsibility for the baby and better yet lets force them to get married! That would make you religious loonies really happy.
