- AMCarter3, on 10/28/2008, -0/+6This is a graphic example of how McCain distorts the truth to fit his own interpretation of reality.
- shylove, on 10/30/2008, -0/+3It is a sad commentary to think the Vietnamese don't hate us but to us perhaps they simply aren't considered human beings at all.
Sad to think Bush could go to Vietnam and say we should have stayed fighting, meaning killing more of them, when in hindsight we know the world did not fall to communism and the entire rational has now proven false.
So really it was just a serious football game with the goal being to win for its own sake. I would think some of those involved, such as
McCain, might have a more human view, so I have to conclude he is still holding some of that anger in and refusing to see their humanity where they seem to see his. - MsLaurel, on 11/01/2008, -0/+3Saves your life twice, and all he gets is a lousy souvenir key-fob?
- sammyjames, on 10/29/2008, -0/+3This makes me feel very sad. I know a person who was born and raised in Vietnam. She has spoken somewhat to me of her home. I guess that I feel sad because I think of her, and how bad I feel for her people. John McCain never talks about how our country decimated parts of Vietnam. I guess that I'm not surprised that he wouldn't take the time to discuss his Vietnamese friend. I hope that he loses, because we don't need any more war heroes who think that war is good.
- LouiseCalabro, on 10/28/2008, -0/+3I could only think about how different the narrative would be had McCain said: "I was beginning to learn the limits of my selfish independence. Those (Vietnamese civilians) saved my life (because they understood the humanity in all of us that transcends government and country)."
- oldkrin, on 10/30/2008, -0/+2just one more example of McCain's view of himself and it's completely self serving.
- stpeterican, on 10/28/2008, -0/+2Forty-one years after McCain was shot down in Vietnam, the man who saved his life has died in obscurity.
- inactive, on 11/02/2008, -0/+1thanks for the diggs and comments all, I also found this one quite disturbing. Particularly how the Vietnamese man treated the key-fob like an heirloom and obviously had a deep respect for human life, while McCain showed apathy....
- revelveteen, on 10/28/2008, -0/+1I'll bet he remembered all right, at least after meeting the man. This is typical of the simplistic tactics/arguments the GOP makes in this election--"don't acknowledge any positive associations with former U.S. adversaries such as Vietnam, Russia, etc."... "Obama equals Muslim equals Terrorist" and so on. What a selfish, uncaring excuse for a human being.
