Hillary Clinton On Working Class Whites In 1995: Screw 'em
huffingtonpost.com — After losing congress in the 1994 elections, the then-first lady gave a less than inclusive answer to the question of how to win white southerners back to the Democratic Party. "Screw 'em," she told her husband. "You don't owe them a thing, Bill. They're doing nothing for you; you don't have to do anything for them."

- n00ptic, on 04/16/2008, -9/+140If the MSM picks this up it just might hurt a little bit in the PA primaries, or even in tonight's debate.
- AtHomeBoy2000, on 04/16/2008, -1/+16It sure would look great being brought up tonight.
- qwerter, on 04/16/2008, -1/+37It would, but I think there's a better chance of the MSM picking it up than Obama pouncing on it. He defends himself well, but attacking her like she does him isn't really his thing.
I say let the media grab it and run with it. You want condescending? You want elitist? Here you go... This will HURT if it gets picked up.
The best part is that, according to this article, Bill's mindset is more in line with Obama's. She says "screw 'em", he empathizes with them.- MacEnvy, on 04/16/2008, -3/+28If it wasn't for Hillary's candidacy, Bill would be stumping for Obama at every turn. With their upbringing and personal philosophies they are a good fit. It's quite sad really - Obama *deserves* that help more than Hillary does :(
- qwerter, on 04/16/2008, -1/+11It's a lose-lose situation for him. If he weren't already president, Hillary wouldn't even be running.
- Coven, on 04/16/2008, -5/+7Can Bill be VP after he's been the Pres?
- treed, on 04/16/2008, -11/+1Pretty sure he can. I know you can go the other direction. 8 years as VP, and 8 years as President.
- neognostic, on 04/16/2008, -0/+14No he can't - 12th Amendment states "no person constitutionally ineligible to the office of President shall be eligible to that of Vice-President of the United States." Since his is ineligible because he has served more than 6 years already.
- qwerter, on 04/16/2008, -0/+6Negative. The VP must be eligible for presidency. Bill has served his 8, so he is ineligible.
- MacEnvy, on 04/16/2008, -3/+28If it wasn't for Hillary's candidacy, Bill would be stumping for Obama at every turn. With their upbringing and personal philosophies they are a good fit. It's quite sad really - Obama *deserves* that help more than Hillary does :(
- vinnyvenus, on 04/16/2008, -5/+3Yes our media is going to question Hillary based on what some guy wrote in his book fifteen years ago. Get real. Obama supporters are acting like foxnews right now " swift boarding" Hillary based on hearsay.Talk about being hypocritical.
- Suzilla, on 04/16/2008, -3/+4The headline, comment, and premise of the article are misleading. She wasn't saying "screw 'em" about all working-class white voters (as the headline implies), nor was this stated as a policy position. Rather, it was an utterance in exhasperation after they'd lost to what would ultimately become the worst wave of wackos and malcontents ever to ***** all over the halls of Congress came sweeping in.
I'm not a Hillary supporter by any means, but I do support rational and substantitive argument -- not mud-slinging such as this.
- qwerter, on 04/16/2008, -1/+37It would, but I think there's a better chance of the MSM picking it up than Obama pouncing on it. He defends himself well, but attacking her like she does him isn't really his thing.
- robdiggity, on 04/16/2008, -5/+18...after receiving this advice, Bill promptly shrugged his shoulders and went off to bang some southern broad.
- vinnyvenus, on 04/16/2008, -19/+3How about some truthful headline
" Some guy is calming that Hilary said to screw middle class"
Obama's supporters being are so dishonest that it's not even funny. I am not even a Hillary supporter but this Digg hating Hillary has gone too far. If it was not for the state I would o vote for Hillary just retaliate against stupid Obamatards on Digg.- ginestony, on 04/16/2008, -4/+4If you're going to make a complaint, work on your grammar beforehand.
- n00ptic, on 04/16/2008, -2/+8The story is from a Clinton staffer, was corroborated by several people present, and was published in a book about seven years ago. How about trying another argument against it.
- vinnyvenus, on 04/16/2008, -6/+2People in Swiftboard ad knew john kerry. They served with him in Vietnam. Does that mean they were being honest?

- orangefly, on 04/17/2008, -0/+2yeah....people that voted for bush used it all up....
- chaosium, on 04/17/2008, -1/+1Because we don't want Hillary?
- mochaman, on 04/16/2008, -0/+8The stuff she is doing now may have worked in the 90s the age of 24 hours news cycles and web 1.0. I don't think the Clintons knew what they were getting into now the age of blogs and social networks: you can't hide and lie your mouth off you're going to get cought. I for one am glad this is coming out since the Clintons have shown their willingness to go down to the gutter and play dirty politics.
- jamesmon01, on 04/16/2008, -2/+1foxnews just mentioned it. (only station not 100% covering the pope oddly enough)
- mabs0, on 04/16/2008, -1/+2ABC has a blogg on it and they say that "some readers have noticed" the Huffington story, which means that enough people are bombarding the MSM with emails to get their attention.

- mabs0, on 04/17/2008, -0/+1I love the title. That's exactly the point: Screw 'em vs. Bitter
- jabberwolf, on 04/17/2008, -7/+2HUFFINGTON POST WOW.. there is some facts for ya !!
So a guy said that Hillary said this to Bill... LETS POST THE ***** ON DIGG WHOOPEEE !!
Anything that gets any news from Huffington is a complete RETARD!- Apokalyps2547, on 04/17/2008, -1/+1Says the guy who gets his news from... don't tell me... Sean Hannity?
- diggrnumber1, on 04/17/2008, -1/+2i hate hillary too, but this is a misrepresentation of her quote. i sometimes find working-class southerners very annoying, too. they are at least partially responsible for electing bush by voting based on the religion card. they really shouldn't be part of this country. i think the civil war was a good idea, but only because it freed the slaves. the north and the west had to keep the south as part of the u.s. to keep the slaves free (i know it wasn't fought over slavery, but it eventually became all about slavery for many northerners and westerners following the war). now, a large number of this country's political problems can be attributed to the south. they consistently screw us over in the elections. and to think that our politicians have to pander to these guys! I can understand her anger.
- zeiben, on 04/17/2008, -0/+2I hate to say it, but I agree with you. Besides, what is said in close quarters is not really fair to attack on, since she was probably just venting. And sure, it goes to how she resents people for putting their own concerns ahead of loyalty to her, but we hardly needed any more evidence of that. Still, I'm all for the MSM blowing this way out of proportion and making her look bad for it. She's had it coming.
- MyDiggIsBig, on 04/17/2008, -0/+2my naive children. you think she is the only politician to curse you? if you think so then man, you guys live in a world of denial. even obama has thoughts like these. no such thing as a truthful or sincere politician.
- AtHomeBoy2000, on 04/16/2008, -1/+16It sure would look great being brought up tonight.
- nelsonjs, on 04/16/2008, -8/+192This is indicative of the fact that Hillary, not Obama, is the elitist candidate in the democratic race. The nerve to call him elitist after making comments like these is incredible.
- natchiketa, on 04/16/2008, -1/+15Maybe Obama should respond to her condemnation for his 'guns and religion' remarks by quoting Bill back to her:
"I know how you feel. I understand Hillary's sense of outrage. It makes me mad too. Sure, we lost our base in the South; our boys voted for Gingrich. But let me tell you something. I know these boys. I grew up with them. Hardworking, poor, white boys, who feel left out, feel that our reforms always come at their expense. Think about it, every progressive advance our country has made since the Civil War has been on their backs. They're the ones asked to pay the price of progress. Now, we are the party of progress, but let me tell you, until we find a way to include these boys in our programs, until we stop making them pay the whole price of liberty for others, we are never going to unite our party, never really going to have change that sticks."
Granted, he'll probably want to find a substitute for the term 'white boys'...- stretch611, on 04/16/2008, -0/+2But then Hillary would attack him saying that he stole a quote from Bill. :)

- AtHomeBoy2000, on 04/16/2008, -1/+13Hillary has a tendency to project. So, if you see something negative about Obama that is coming form her (his "connections" to big oil or elitism), it most likely applies to her, not him.

- stretch611, on 04/16/2008, -2/+1I always have thought this until now thanks to Obama. Everyone that I have truly liked has not made it passed the primaries and every general election I have had to vote for "the lesser of two evils." That being said, Obama does inspire me to think that we might truly get a president for the people instead of for the corporation. (I know technically he has not won the primary yet, but the math says he will make it unless the dems want a revolt.)
- userperson, on 04/19/2008, -0/+1I think that might be insulting to corporations, probably not THAT insulting as they're pretty crappy, but Johnson & Johnson never breaks down my door when I use generic Q-tips.
- TheJokerV, on 04/17/2008, -0/+2I believe it was Lewis Black during Red White and Screwed that said "so when you walked into the ballot booth you had the choose between 2 bowls of ***** and you had to determine who's ***** stinks less"

- greginmadison, on 04/16/2008, -3/+49Ah, the raw face of pure power. The more I see/hear of Hillary, the more I REALLY dislike her (coming from someone that actually did like her at one time and went and paid to see her at a fund raiser).

- naner, on 04/16/2008, -1/+15If they don't already, someone at Obama HQ should be scouring Digg for "ammunition" so to speak. Some of these stories are pretty damning but they never quite make it out to the "real world" until the MSM stumbles on it.
- Bertram23, on 04/16/2008, -2/+0As likely to be the McCain machine doing the scouring. Rumour has it there's a lot of energy there going in to making sure its Obama he has to fight not Clinton.
- TheJokerV, on 04/17/2008, -0/+1That's so dumb its not even funny. Many high republican party members have already urged republicans in the remaining primary states to vote for Hilary. Obama would be an incredible challenge to McCain while Hilary is a much lesser opponent.

Baer's comments came at roughly the same moment that The New Republic published a blog post by Alan Wolfe, a professor of political science at Boston College, who was also at the retreat and says he too heard the quote. Noting Carson's remark -- "So, you've got two guys we've barely heard of remembering a verbatim quote from 13 years ago?... Sounds totally and completely reliable" -- Wolfe writes: "Make that three. I was there. I hope people have heard of me. And Barber and Boyte have it right."

because when I read that I thought of a computer screen pressed against a xerox machine and it didn't make any sense for 3 seconds.- StusGhost, on 04/17/2008, -0/+1This is a reference to Hillary's quote during one of her debates with Obama: "I think if your candidacy is going to be about words, then they should be your own words. That's I think a very simple proposition. Lifting whole passages from someone else's speeches is not change you can believe in, it's change you can Xerox," she said, delivering the most memorable line of the night, but also eliciting a chorus of boos from the audience at the University of Texas at Austin.
It was a headline in almost every major newspaper in the country. Please don't fill up the comment sections with your uninformed, ignorant, dumb ramblings in response to funny, witty, banter. Thank you.- andrew522, on 04/17/2008, -0/+1Well I just didn't hear that particular quote, and my local paper is complete *****.
I appreciate the first paragraph of what you said, because it informed me of something I missed.
With regards to the second paragraph, there is no need to get vindictive saying that I or my 'ramblings' are dumb. I was quite simply uninformed at the time of reading and could therefore not realize the context of the statement.

WAY TO TRY TO MAKE OBAMA LOOK LIKE A MUDSLINGER, JUST LIKE HILLARY. all this AFTER SUPPORTING HOW HIS CAMPAIGN DOESNT PLAY DIRTY AND RETALIATE. god you people are douchebags and its disgusting that you've infiltrated this site with your propaganda.
to think that I actually watched the speech in 2004, and signed all those petitions to get him to run this year. ...im ashamed of you people here on digg. I thought this was about really making a difference, and I've been dropped on my head when I realized it's the same old movement, with the same old mudslinging, with the same old democrat. and that's ***** sad.

Dont gimme your complaints about her, I've heard em all, I know them all. The Obama rhetoric is also played out. Maybe it's time digg focused on the important stuff, not mudslinging.- Acewrap, on 04/16/2008, -2/+14Important stuff? This is from your comment history:
"You mean an oreo propped up by rich white Wall Streeters? Typical American leftist stance looking for a TOKEN black president. I'm not against a black president, but I dont think a black president is a good change just because he's black. If the rich white guys stopped backing him he would be the next 7%er Ron Paul."
Beat it, troll. - sqwirl, on 04/16/2008, -0/+3Using someone's own words against them isn't 'mudslinging'.
- vinnyvenus, on 04/16/2008, -6/+1To Acewrap
Stonewalljacksn joined digg in 2006 while you joined in 2007. Majority of articles you dugg are pro- Obama while he has dugg articles in variety of topics across all sections. In your comment history at least three people troll for disagreeing with you. What do you call some who stoops to name calling when he cannot stand the opposite viewpoint? How about lets call you an *****. No,we can't do that because it demean assholes across the world. I can't think of any names to call you but if I did I will probably reply to my post.If someone else can think of any appropriate word please reply.- Acewrap, on 04/16/2008, -1/+2How about "Thoughtful and intelligent"
=)- vinnyvenus, on 04/16/2008, -2/+1What is thoughtful and intelligent about calling people trolls who dis agree with you? You called Mccain senile and old that sounds a by your standards you can also be labeled a troll.
- Acewrap, on 04/16/2008, -1/+2I was being generous. He's either senile or a liar.
McCain is in his early 70s. In addition, he suffered greatly for years, which created a great deal more stress and strain during his years as a POW in Nam. Would it be surprising that a human body is actually frail? Or that a human mind could suffer from organic problems?
How about his constant "confusion" of Sunni vs. Shia? This not the first time that he blithely says stuff that is later proved to be less than accurate. The biggest blooper was the broadest statement made by McCain - that he had never once violated the public trust as a public official.
In 1989, McCain, along with four democrats, was part of the Keating Five scandal. The Lincoln Savings and Loan Association collapsed. It's chairman, Charles Keating, was the obvious culprit, taking advantage of deregulation, lax oversight, and bendable rules. Shades of today's mortgage crisis, only better. The inspector in charge of the Keating investigation testified that several senators requested that he stop his investigation. The senators, including John McCain, were paid $1.3 million in "Campaign" contributions by Keating. The Senate Ethics committee did its best to protect its own, but the Lincoln failure was huge, even by today's standards. More than $3 billion was lost (and repaid by US taxpayers). McCain received what amounted to a slap on the wrist.
However, looking at the whole situation honestly, McCain was bribed, and then did his best to interfere with a criminal investigation of the briber. McCain's blanket denial is palpably false. The question is, does John McCain simply have a habit of lying, or is there an organic problem that Americans need to consider, and possibly worry about? Given his infamous temper tantrums, all we need is a guy who loses his grip on reality while under stress. - Acewrap, on 04/16/2008, -1/+2I don't call people trolls for disagreeing with me. I call them trolls because in my opinion they are trolls. When I see a comment such as "Go Obama!!! Nah just kidding, I only wanted to feel the thrill of saying it... Obama sucks a hard one." you're damned right I'm going to call that person out for being a troll.
- qwerter, on 04/16/2008, -0/+2This may help, vinnyvenus:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_troll - vinnyvenus, on 04/16/2008, -1/+1I know what troll is but Stonewalljacksn is not being a troll here. You are digging his past to prove he is a troll. Samething could be said about you if we start looking at your past comment.

I was digging up a past post to point out that SWJ not only engages in mudslinging, but also racism AND concern trolling "being human" "Don't gimme your complaints about her". Hillary support from a Ron Paul supporter? A trifecta! The guy is obviously a troll in my opinion. But hey, opinions are like assholes, as you were so kind to call me further up the thread. ;)

- StarlessKnight, on 04/16/2008, -0/+2"Maybe it's time digg focused on the important stuff, not mudslinging." Tell that to Hillary. She's made an ad devoted, in its entirety, to "revealing" how "offended" the people of Pennsylvania are and how others there should vote for Hillary, because Obama just doesn't "get it." Somehow I doubt that video really has much weight on "the important stuff."
Still, this particular article may not be as ground breaking as some might take it. I wouldn't tout this as prime evidence, but it does raise a few questions about her mindset and motives.

- mal1964, on 04/16/2008, -8/+3"And it's not surprising then they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren't like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations."
“Get me more white people, we need more white people.” To an Asian girl sitting in the back row, one coordinator said, “We’re moving you, sorry. It’s going to look so pretty, though.” - phrenzy, on 04/16/2008, -8/+1I want Obama to take the nomination as much as anybody else, but this is a non-story in terms of effecting the race. Wthout video or audio, it's just some guy saying something in a book. Doesn't cut it in the media age unfortunately.
- qwerter, on 04/16/2008, -1/+4They didn't have audio of Obama for a while--didn't seem to stop that story from taking off.

- phrenzy, on 04/16/2008, -0/+1Who the hell said that? My point was that in the media culture, nowadays audio or video needs to be present for this to have a significant impact.
I don't doubt for a second that she said this. The Clintons have always been somewhat Nixonian in their attitudes toward politics.
I mean, look at the whole Rev. Wright nonsense. The information about the Trinity church had been out for months and months and nobody gave 2 *****. It wasn't until the VIDEO came out that it got press. That's the way it works. Sorry if you don't like it.

- treehugger87, on 04/16/2008, -4/+13I can remember this being reported and talked about back in 1995. Honestly, I couldn't agree with her more in this particular instance. The only thing southern white men did for Bill Clinton is elect and support the right-wing extremists in congress who outwardly hated him from the moment he was elected.
With that said, Bill was enough of a man to not use his political power to impact the lives of millions of southern white men out of vengeance or spite. Can you say Bush has done the same for the people who have voted against him and harassed him through his total inept presidency? - exomni, on 04/16/2008, -7/+11***** Clinton.
