- jeffbw, on 08/27/2008, -3/+55The AP looks pretty much like a monopoly to me, & that's scary enough. Now they are adding "color" to their product, in the form of allowing their reporters to slant their stories however they like. Seriously, that's the new policy; see:
http://dyn.politico.com/printstory.cfm?uuid=1DA639 ...
It's all just fun and games, folks. Infotainment. You know, like Fox. - lncb2u, on 08/27/2008, -4/+45Controlled Media = Fascism!
- adept2u, on 08/27/2008, -6/+41An outrageous affront to free speech and press from a member of the press. A disgusting tale of media asshatery of the largest magnitude. You can't fire me AP. Frack you and your biased coverage.
- otheruser, on 08/28/2008, -2/+28What the hell?!
Trying to ruin someone's life because they wrote a critical piece about your NEWS organization!?
That is ***** up. - ToughsNotEnough, on 08/27/2008, -4/+29Instead of requesting a correction or posting a counter-piece, AP had an employee track down the blogger. They then made threats and emailed accusations to his employer, a newspaper. A Pisser....
- boadicea29, on 08/27/2008, -7/+29Dear Asshat Press:
Screw you, you voracious bullies. - Dewhead, on 08/28/2008, -3/+23Conservatives have been complaining about the AP for years. I guess its not so fun when its against one of yours is it? If this is true, than it is an outrage! The media has become so immoral. Remember the photos from the AP of terrorists about to shoot someone and the video of our soldiers being killed? The freaking terrorists gave the snuff film to the AP and of course they took it. Digusting.
- sympa1004, on 08/28/2008, -1/+19So a citizen cannot criticize a media organization without fear of personal retribution? AP just showed their lack of professionalism and fear of a people-powered media.
This is despicable. - bvljac, on 08/27/2008, -3/+20How should I put this... Let me try it in French, ***** YOU AP!
- CTLiberal, on 08/27/2008, -4/+19Hey AP! You're becoming irrelevant, so I guess that is why you feel the need for underhanded, dirty tricks. Pathetic.
- mistertrogdor, on 08/28/2008, -0/+14In Ohio, a group of newspapers has banded together to create a story-sharing cooperative called the Ohio News Organization (or, funnily enough, OHNO). The plan is to sidestep the AP by sharing stories in a way that is more beneficial and cost-effective for Ohio papers. According to the Wall Street Journal, editors in Texas, Pennsylvania and Indiana have quietly inquired about how the Ohio cooperative works.
I live in Ohio and this is the first I have heard of this. - rld513, on 08/27/2008, -2/+15Google can work for you AND against you. Heh.
- slantyeyed, on 08/28/2008, -0/+13is this verifiable? who's the blogger? what's the web site?

- temptxan, on 08/28/2008, -1/+7This is not about liberal or conservatives. This is about a corporate entity using its muscle to muzzle any criticism. Even you should be concerned. What would your boss think of your snarky attitude? Might just provide the necessary evidence to fire you.
- robbh66, on 08/28/2008, -6/+12Dear Asshat Bloggers:
Yes, because you guys have never harassed anybody. Seriously, you guys REALLY want to go there? - DrPh0bius, on 08/28/2008, -1/+7Yes, ***** AP.
But heres what I want to add... as a blogger, you have to accept that if you are going to try and cover hard hitting legitimate news, you are playing with the big boys. Its naive to think that news agencies give two ***** about free speech or what is right or wrong. It gets down to making sponsors happy, plain and simple. If you want to take your blog up against the news juggernauts, prepare to play hard ball with these guys. They care about the sponsors money, and they will take down anyone who gets in their way.
All this "liberal media" talk is just the crap that dim witted people who have their heads stuck firmly in the ass of partisan politics spew. Any sense of liberalism from the media is there only because that is what sells right now. After 9/11, when everyone was in a patriotic frenzy, the media was more conservative, because thats what people wanted, thats what sold papers or earned web views/click thorughs, and thats what made money from the sponsors.
What happened was wrong, but if you want to delve into serious journalism, you need to be prepared to play the game... bloggers are no exception. Welcome to America, where the almighty dollar is the ultimate truth. - JasonCox, on 08/28/2008, -1/+7You spelled 'Frak' wrong.
- DD2K, on 08/28/2008, -5/+11Yea, this is *****. The AP are trying to be Faux Newz bullies and actually could have cost a man his job. Pathetic.
- mcquitty, on 08/28/2008, -3/+8":::::: Go after some online kid through his employer ??? You are gutless, Bush-licking, Limbaugh-sucking cowards."
Hmm, I wonder what Mr. Bush and Mr. Limbaugh have to do with the AP? Do they run it? Or is this simply an ad hominem attack to appeal to the emotions of the Kos readers? - ayeroxor, on 08/28/2008, -0/+4"Help bloggers speak truth to the Associated Press"
Looks like they're having an easy time speaking to the AP. How can I help? - norman619, on 08/28/2008, -2/+6FTA:"What does that tell you? It means that newspapers are having their product taken from them and given away to their competitors."
I had no idea the newspapers owned the truth and world events.
FTA:"Can you think of any other business that gives away its unique product in this fashion?"
Again the news is not a product. It is information. If someone tells me about something that went down somewhere and I then go tell others does that mean I ripped off the person who told me? Hell no. No one owns the truth. - DearSergio, on 08/28/2008, -1/+5Blogging is NOT just a diary you let the world read.
Blogging is an important step in freeing up the media that the government tries to control. It's a huge factor in the struggle against corporate and government controlled media. - ayeroxor, on 08/28/2008, -2/+5jour·nal·ist Audio Help /ˈdʒɜrnlɪst/ – noun

Sounds like bloggers are more actual journalists than the talking heads you seem to be defending. - pintomp3, on 08/28/2008, -0/+3news/information shouldn't be a product, but in our private corporate media it has become just that. infotainment.
- jmpeagle, on 08/28/2008, -0/+3none of this has to do with free speech. Ask anyone at the ACLU.
- mcquitty, on 08/28/2008, -0/+3I didn't see that listed in the article. Even so, the article is trying to blame Mr. Bush and Mr. Limbaugh for something someone else did because he tried to get a job on Mr. McCain's election staff?
And if he tried, and didn't get the job, again, how is this Mr. Bush or Mr. Limbaugh's issue?
Unless, of course, we are trying to blame everything on those two. In which case, we might as well blame everything else on them as well... - ConnecticutMan1, on 08/28/2008, -0/+3The media needs to leave all of the services like the AP in the dustbins of history. It is all just a means of controlling a homogenized message of lies and propaganda.
- tao52nyc, on 08/28/2008, -1/+4highacidity - most disjointed run-on sentence of the week. Use more commas. I had to read it three times before I figured out what you were trying to say.
- pintomp3, on 08/28/2008, -0/+3these days journalists != journalists.
- inactive, on 08/28/2008, -0/+2actually it should be are more of us not is more
so point for you - BufordT, on 08/28/2008, -0/+2I listened to Rush just the other day, and he was slamming the AP like there was no tomorrow. He absolutely despises it.
- inactive, on 08/28/2008, -0/+2i wasn't referring to myself my blog is about poetry and philosophy it is not designed to be influential
and besides there is nothing wrong with my grammar
punctuation and capitalization are not grammar
word usage and subject verb agreement and proper use of adverbs and adjectives and such are grammar - inactive, on 08/28/2008, -2/+4***** the A.P. ***** old fashioned morons more interested in preserving their own asses than doing their job right.
- inactive, on 08/28/2008, -3/+5there is more of us (bloggers) than there are of you (msm)
and some of us are better than you
when you have to get 'own and dirty' in an attempt to win you are already losing - inactive, on 08/28/2008, -0/+2The problem is, now days, that the (in my opinion, idiotic) idea that "your truth is not my truth" is very prevalent. It's a moral equivalence point of view which tends to muddy real discourse with half-truths and sometimes outright lies.
Personally, I tend to equate the words "truth" and "fact". To me, when you say "I'm telling the truth," that means "I'm giving you the facts." Sadly, now days, "truth" has been mislabeled and watered down to mean "my point of view, regardless of the facts."
Very, very sad. - inactive, on 08/28/2008, -0/+2Associated Press... I can't believe that they still exist! A bunch of dumb *****'s that somehow managed to miss the entire reason that the Internet is a superior news source and still stonewalls anyone wanting to even paraphrase the little snippets or text they call news. Just stop using them and they will go away...
- Caffeinate, on 08/30/2008, -0/+2While I usually disagree with people who randomly scream "gay" at anything they don't like, your comment was much more intelligent, and frankly more apt.
I happen to be gay, so I can say this - flubba needs to either dyke up or cry elsewhere. :) - cookseytalbott, on 08/28/2008, -0/+2I guess it hurts the AP to be outed as part of the Neo-Con/Republican Noise Machine.
Propaganda is NOT NEWS! - temptxan, on 08/28/2008, -0/+2No, but Rupert Murdoch is now on the board.
- ConnecticutMan1, on 08/28/2008, -0/+2The original story was at dKos. The diarist deleted it and signed out of that account permanently BUT will create a new screen name and continue to participate while making a better attempt to remain anonymous this time. When AP called his work they crossed the line on infringing a person's right to privacy, IMHO.
Simply having an opinion on a message board on the internet is not good enough reason to be outed. The AP attacked the messenger and never bothered to honestly address the real issues. - Pandatot, on 08/28/2008, -1/+3Yay, let's turn this article into a Politcal argument!!
- johnny51714, on 08/28/2008, -0/+2There is always hope.
The powers that be lose more and more credibility with each passing day.
I have hope in our future not because our current leaders will change their ways, but because the generation preparing to take over (my generation, I am 29) is more free thinking and willing to take action than the generation of my parents.
I believe that our parent's generation (I'm speaking purely of the American generation, not the global generation) relied too much on the government to handle all their problems.
They swallowed up every piece of information that was provided to them without ever verifying the facts. I believe their generation were raised to believe that their voices and actions were insignificant and could never bring about change. I do not blame them because I think they were victims of their upbringing. However, this victimization also resulted in my parent's generation realizing their shortcomings and teaching their children (my generation) that we had the power to change our world. They taught and pushed for us to gain as much knowledge as possible and to work with each other. We then realized and taught each other that KNOWLEDGE IS POWER!!!
My generation is a generation of free thinkers and pursuers of knowledge. This is most apparent in the hacker society. Hackers are believed to be evil criminals out to destroy the world. This is a fallacy!!!! Just like every other group of people in the world, we do have our "bad seeds" (we call them Black Hats, or PHREAKERS, PHISHERS, etc.) . These are the people using their skills and knowledge for financial gain and to cause havoc. True hackers are patriots of the Information Age. We hold information to be the most valuable of all human creations. We believe that information is to be freely available to all.
Therefore, our only true crime is that of curiosity.
Yes we "hack" into computer systems; but only to see how they work. We often deliver or leave messages of the exploit for the security administrators to address. But above all else, we are in constant search of information and truth. We band together to help each other expand our horizons. We share our knowledge to help technology progress and to protect ourselves from those who would stop us. We fight against the establishments who try to manipulate and coerce us into believing that they're way is the right way. We fight not with guns and bombs, but with words and thoughts.
I have hope that my generation will produce leaders with these ideals. I have hope that my generation will not stand aside and watch the world collapse. I have hope that my generation will stand up, speak their minds and take action to better the world. It will take time, but I have hope..........and so should you. - sheetrock, on 08/28/2008, -0/+2This is the post from the original author, explaining the whole story:
http://www.dailykos.com/storyonly/2008/8/27/85723/ ... - zookbert, on 08/28/2008, -0/+2fyi-- the blogger in question is a reporter who works at a newspaper, so he knows how the "game" is played. His postings on DailyKos are under a user name not linked to his identity, so that his employer isn't held responsible for the opinions he expresses there. It took considerable digging for AP to link them and then try to embarrass him with his editor at the newspaper. They took this route instead of responding in kind, on the blog, and debating the facts stated in the original diary.
- philodygmn, on 08/28/2008, -0/+2I think the problem of attribution can easily be taken care of, and I think the AP's role is little different than bloggers', when you think about it, because bloggers comment on other people's stories an awful lot, which is rare to do in traditional media, and I don't want that to be frowned upon just because the AP refuses to bother attributing stories!
- IAmTheGuy, on 08/28/2008, -1/+2I hate so many of Digg users. "Let's bash the big companies because it's cool!" The AP is the best source of international news that I know of. Let's look at the slant at the 4 stories on the front page of www.ap.org -
"Obama plays some hoops, works on speech" - It's an article talking about Obama at Denver. He played some basketball and continues to work on his speech for tonight. It then talks about the strategy McCain will most likely use to dampen any gain Obama might get from this week. Then it talks about how the Democrats will most likely campaign.
"Economy rebounds in 2Q, mostly spurred by exports " - Just facts about the economy here. Mentions unemployment rate and inflation rate along with the GDP. Then it says how Obama thinks he can fix the economy and how McCain thinks he can fix the economy. No slant there.
"Tourists flee as Gustav churns toward Jamaica " - Nothing there
"McCain says no vice presidential decision yet " - Just talks about McCain's possible VP pick. Nothing unlike what the rest of the news sources have done so far for either McCain or Obama. - brycelb, on 08/28/2008, -0/+1I do believe Rupert backed Hillary so I can't rally see any conservative connection with him. Just cause the guy is a smart business man and saw a gapping hole in the balance of the news coverage doesn't mean he is in agreement with some of the talking heads on the channel. I realize it makes your job easier since you don't have to think before you post but in this case it looks like your wrong.
- jarvis400, on 08/28/2008, -0/+1Thanks, that was a good read.
