- lilamae, on 07/02/2009, -8/+40This has been a day of surprises. Shock and awe - never thought I'd use that phrase in sentence about Helen Thomas.
- JoeyNine, on 07/02/2009, -6/+33Then she continued on to say, "Not even Abraham Lincoln treated me this bad!"
- Temlakos, on 07/02/2009, -10/+36But I thought that Barack Obama was Helen Thomas' friend! This has got to be the biggest case of buyer's remorse we've seen yet!
- Janinco, on 07/02/2009, -12/+32I guess Helen Thomas is one of the few in the state run media that isn't afraid of Obama. He will find a way to shut her up...
- inactive, on 07/02/2009, -11/+27I've seen several press conferences and have to say that Robert Gibbs is an a-hole. Really. Snarky doesn't even cover it.
- BREZZZ, on 07/02/2009, -6/+16My best advice to Mr Gibbs is to concede before the fight even starts.
- these3remain, on 07/02/2009, -7/+15Yup. She and Chip Reid might as well head over to Fox since they won't be called on anyway for those "scripted" townhalls or press conferences.
- mgraves81, on 07/02/2009, -2/+9Hahaha. Thanks! Good way to start my day.
- BowieX, on 07/03/2009, -2/+8Some of the comments left on this and the article's page are ridiculous; however, as a Libertarian I fully agree that press control should be eliminated through whatever means possible, or at the very least, the question of press control brought out into the open, whether or not it's actually occurring to any significant degree (yet) under Obama.
Meanwhile, neither Republicans nor Democrats (in their current form) should be in power so the conversation needs to accelerate.
But I do believe we need to give the President a little more of a chance than 6 months... - emailowndme, on 07/02/2009, -2/+8Alright, I'm the gullible idiot.
Nixon-Watergate
Reagan-Iran Contra
Bush Sr-Read my lips, no new taxes
Clinton-EVERYTHING from start to finish.
Bush JR-He's an idiot, then 9/11, suddenly it's hail to the chief for almost 8 years.
Obama-He's still in the thank god it's not bush phase. - skanton, on 07/02/2009, -1/+6Go read wiki about Marxism instead of repeating what others tell you.
- oldhick, on 07/02/2009, -0/+5Excellent response emailowndme.
As someone who lived through the Nixon years, I have no idea what the hell anyone here is talking about. The media hated Nixon.... How did he control the media??? - TCSavant, on 07/02/2009, -10/+15We aren't a year into this administration yet and the press corps is already turning on Obama. If we're lucky, public opinion will soon follow suit and prevent any more damage to this country.
- yocouchdigga, on 07/03/2009, -0/+3yes, because the "us vs. them", "neener, neener" attitude has worked so well for us in the past... please, stop that *****. the majority of both sides in power do not give a flying ***** about us. how is this not apparent to everyone?
- skanton, on 07/02/2009, -2/+5Obama doesnt need to control the media, the media is already controlled from within... read please:
http://digg.com/political_opinion/Monopoly_Media_M ... - inactive, on 07/02/2009, -4/+7Maybe Obama will have her put in the back row like Bush did. (Or maybe she is still there?)
- TheInformer, on 07/04/2009, -1/+3Common sense just reached out and slapped Helen Thomas.
- subliminali, on 07/03/2009, -1/+3maybe helen thomas has a point about how the questions are being selected, i'm not a white house insider so I don't know. If it's true then I wish it's changed.
I will say, however, that Obama takes an extraordinary amount of questions from people that he knows will grill him. It's almost like he enjoys proving to his opposition that he can still outtalk and out think them in his answers. Bush certainly never did either. - sugarazor, on 07/03/2009, -1/+3Gotta love it: "Obama is controlling the media, now watch the media eviscerate his press secretary about it."
- Billions, on 07/03/2009, -1/+2Different era, we have the internet now... why do you think we're even able to be talking about this here, or reach out to others over systems like youtube and twitter? Throwing around the name of Nixon is a scare tactic to evoke overtones of mistrust and illegality easily seen in hindsight, when in contrast, we can't tell yet if Obama is comparable to Nixon. He's already far more transparent so I don't see this comparison holding up in the long run.
Throw in some break-ins at a hotel, then we can talk. - NiftyG, on 07/03/2009, -2/+3After she questioned the war, George Bush sent Helen Thomas to the back of the press room and didn't call on her for over three years. Now she's back up front, asking tough questions, and complaining about THIS president controlling the media?
Right.... She's just upset that bloggers are getting to ask questions. - woot222, on 07/03/2009, -1/+2Bullsh*t Transparency.
- doughpro, on 07/02/2009, -5/+6Robert Gibbs always looks like he is clueless, and his answers confirm that. He's not just constantly covering his boss' ass, he is hiding what his boss is really doing, and that is turning our country into a banana republic.
He's got to slip up sometime, and it will be big! - Gusbob, on 07/03/2009, -0/+1Are you a conspiracy theorist? Sounds more like a nutjob.
- VisualRhetoric, on 07/02/2009, -1/+2A hag with a ball bag?
- inboxnews, on 07/02/2009, -3/+4A hag that for once in her life, grew a set.
- emailowndme, on 07/02/2009, -16/+16Nixon didn't control the media.
Not even Reagan had a hold on the media..
The only president who's had even close to that was Bush. You can say the media is nice to Obama, that's true, the same has been true for every recent president except for Clinton. Remember, he's not even a year into his term yet, not to mention, the only people who have been brought on to talk about any issues have been conservatives.
We get to hear conservatives talk about global warming, their opinions on the new department of home security, health care, the banks, the debt, etc. I'm honestly tired of listening to this ***** at this point. - doughpro, on 07/02/2009, -4/+4He's too arrogant for that. He would rather risk looking like a putz than admit that an 89-year-old woman could have him by the gonads.
I am worried for Helen Thomas............. - DavidNiven, on 07/02/2009, -3/+3You would if you went on a honeymoon with her. :-)
- vanguardanon, on 07/03/2009, -2/+2I'm not sure why you're getting buried. The press served as cheerleaders heading into the Iraq war. If they had been more critical, if they had asked more questions maybe we could have avoided it.
They used WMD as their reasoning to go to Iraq. I remember asking, "Are there WMDs beyond a reasonable doubt? Why is the burden of proof so much lower for going to war than for putting a single person in prison?" - Gusbob, on 07/03/2009, -1/+1Thank you. That has to be one of the most thought out, balanced digg comment I've read for a while.
However, I disagree that press control can be eliminated. Even if the press is 'independent', it is will run by people with certain views and opinions. And with these opinions, they can control (sometimes inadvertently) what is being written and heard. It is impossible to write and/or publish every single event from every point of view, and thus certain views have to be silenced.
So yes we can separate government directly from the press, but not politics. - 3The3Dude3, on 07/03/2009, -2/+1skanton is right. He is more of a Bolshevik.
- ichbeineinrcg, on 07/02/2009, -6/+5The state of the Republic is the best that it's been in a decade.
If you don't love America, then get the hell out. - doughpro, on 07/02/2009, -4/+3No, she is back in the front row, but I am sure that will change now.
It may turn into a battle of wills between her and BO. Will not be pretty. - URnotheonly1, on 07/03/2009, -1/+0worked on George W Bush
- Ymeg, on 07/03/2009, -2/+11) This is not about Bush. Even if it was related, it would not justify Obama's actions.
2) There is inadequate evidence (none) for the blogger conclusion. - argentfish, on 07/03/2009, -3/+2Ah, if only the press had been this aggressive during the Bush presidency. Then perhaps we could have avoided a useless war that killed thousands of American soldiers, hundreds of thousands of Iraqi civilians, and prevented the collapse of our business infrastructure. But better late than never, right?
- Billions, on 07/03/2009, -3/+1He'll reach out to her and win her over.
- URnotheonly1, on 07/03/2009, -3/+1You pissed off the wrong Marine Obama.
- allisonrose870, on 07/02/2009, -6/+3A bonafide nebbish! Sometimes I think he's going to break down and cry. He's dug himself into a fox hole - he's got no choice but to be a snarky a-hole.
I don't think he's got the stomach to do this for another 3 1/2 years, let alone the rest of the year!
...who wants to take bets on when he resigns or gets the boot?
http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=neb ... - govsucks, on 07/02/2009, -11/+8Someplace Obama is sitting puffin a smoke thinking...its about time that old bitch retired. You know its true.
And dang man, Got your ass whipped by an old lady, for shame! - inactive, on 07/02/2009, -11/+6Fox News: Controlled by Obama since 2009!
- BalzacOG, on 07/03/2009, -5/+1I'm surprised there isn't a brigade of guys saying
"Falcon punch her!" +250 diggs
"You're not supposed to laugh at punching old ladies, but I dugg it! :)))" +89 diggs
"Women hit men too! Equality means we get to hit women back!" +103 diggs
If any group of diggers were worthy of a mass banning, it's the guys in those threads. - doughpro, on 07/02/2009, -12/+8What the hell are you talking about? Do you read anything besides Digg submissions? Do you even know who Nixon was?
My God, you liberal parrots are so maddening! - inactive, on 07/02/2009, -13/+6WHOA!!!! ...don't tell me the Dopey Liberals Moonbats in the MSM are finally getting it!
He's a frikkin Marxist you stupid old cow...
...OF COURSE he's controlling the media...DOH! - inactive, on 07/02/2009, -23/+16She's still a hag.
- irvman21, on 07/02/2009, -15/+8If it were anyone but Helen Thomas, a legend in the press corps, we would be hearing rumors today about how the person who dared asked such questions is a closet racist.
