- justguessing, on 10/11/2008, -4/+130When FactCheck exposes the Ayers smear, then the McCain campaign attacks FactCheck. This article is thorough - in a perfect world, those that need to read it will.

In short, this was a mainstream foundation funded by a mainstream, Republican business leader and led by an overwhelmingly mainstream, civic-minded group of individuals. Ayers' involvement in its inception and on an advisory committee do not make it radical – nor does the funding of programs involving the United Nations and African-American studies.
This attack is false, but it's more than that – it's malicious. It unfairly tars not just Obama, but all the other prominent, well-respected Chicagoans who also volunteered their time to the foundation. They came from all walks of life and all political backgrounds, and there's ample evidence their mission was nothing more than improving ailing public schools in Chicago. Yet in the heat of a political campaign they have been accused of financing radicalism. That's Pants on Fire wrong. - iguana99, on 10/11/2008, -3/+87The problem is these McCain/Palin ads & statements are directed towards people who want to believe these sorts of things, because they're already "uncomfortable" with Obama - whether it's because of his race or supposed islamic faith or some other factor. This line of attack provides a seemingly rational basis on which to cast conscious judgement on his character by those who already have an unconscious bias.
Such people are unlikely to be swayed by facts. Even if they read and accept this particular rebuttal, they will probably go on to find other explicit reasons to justify their emotions.
Those making the attacks, of course, know this. So, basically, these attacks represent the McCain/Palin campaign's attempt to manipulate its own voters, to fire them up. Really, they treat a certain segment of their voters as suckers. Too bad so many of them are.
Perhaps there are people in the middle, who might have raised an eyebrow at this accusation, that are comforted to read that Obama's association with Ayers was not nearly as insidious as the GOP attacks would suggest... - cmootoo, on 10/11/2008, -3/+81Ayers had a meet and greet for him one time back in 95. After that became a bid deal in the media a number of senators from both sides of the aisle came on CNN to say that the practice is not uncommon. A lot of times functions are set up in influential people's homes and they attend, especially during campaigning and they may or may not know the host beforehand.
You're obviously trying to hold on to the one thing that the GOP has left. - JMaj, on 10/12/2008, -6/+82Oliver North

Using McCain's "association tactic" means he is an extreme terrorist right? McCain better leave the guilt by association out of the race, before it blows up in his face. - coltrane68, on 10/11/2008, -3/+54A friend of mine (who is not a particularly prominent citizen, just a good guy) had a similar meet-and-greet for a politician running for higher office in my home state. I am quite sure that the candidate and my friend had no relationship at all prior to that event, and I don't think that they have any relationship now (other than occasional solicitations for donations when the candidate is running for reelection - which I receive as well).
- hierophantus, on 10/12/2008, -2/+48Ah yes, the "obvious propaganda" from factcheck.org. Welcome to the Republican dead-ender's mind, circa 2008.
- kristov, on 10/12/2008, -2/+45So the real question is do republicans EVER get tired of being lied to and misled by their own party?
- GorfTron, on 10/12/2008, -7/+48Nobody Cayers about Ayers.
- phroztbyt3, on 10/12/2008, -1/+38You are a complete retard. Where did you hear that from??? Palin?
Obama announced his candidacy on Feb 10, 2007 in SPRINGFIELD, ILLINOIS. YOU TARD!
Bill Ayers lives in Chicago to this day. FOR ONCE IN YOUR MISERABLE LIFE... READ! - abajaj2280, on 10/12/2008, -4/+39of course he lied, this is the McCain campaign full of cheap lobbyists and a ***** viking from alaska
- Mujokan, on 10/12/2008, -0/+27Selling US weapons directly to Iran (including 1,000 TOW missiles) and using the proceeds to fund Nicaraguan paramilitaries -- both of which actions were clearly illegal -- is in the same ballpark.
Not that I'm defending what Ayers did. But Obama's association with Ayers means no more than McCain's association with North, or the relationship that dozens of prominent people in Chicago have had with Ayers over the years. - bugsy187, on 10/12/2008, -2/+28McCain is friends with Bush... someone guilty of things far more destructive and terrorizing than anything Ayers did.
- geneusutwerk, on 10/12/2008, -0/+22Steve Inskeep: Have you come back to your advisers at any point and said — for example, the ad that ran with your name on it saying that Barack Obama supported comprehensive sex education for primary school students, something that factcheck.org said was wrong. Have you ever gone to your staff and said, "Take that ad off. It's not right"?
McCain: It's factually correct. It's absolutely factually correct, and you can go on my Web site and you can see the exact language of the bill that Senator Obama sponsored. But the point is that if he had agreed to the town hall meetings that I asked him to do all around the country, like Jack Kennedy and Barry Goldwater had once agreed to do, the tenor of this campaign would be dramatically different. If we'd have gone around the country, and stood side-by-side before the American people and listened to their hopes and dreams and aspirations, the whole tenor of this campaign would be dramatically different. I'm proud of the campaign we are running, the ads are factually correct. And if someone named factcheck.org or anybody else doesn't agree with it, I respectfully disagree with their conclusions.

Reverend Hagee incites hatred at a time when we need to be united. - ElAmo, on 10/12/2008, -3/+24There goes McCain on his FakeTalk Express again.
- insomniac8400, on 10/12/2008, -2/+22How is ayers an issue? Republicans put him in charge of the money. You can't blame Barack or anyone else involved with the board for the actions of republicans who hand selected Ayers to be in charge of the board. The only place you should hear Ayers name is fox news where they ignore the fact that republicans chose ayers to head that board.
- hierophantus, on 10/12/2008, -1/+19Rarely is so much said that means so little.
- nblsavage, on 10/12/2008, -1/+18and your "proof"? Yeah, that's what I thought.
- hierophantus, on 10/12/2008, -1/+18Hey, good job. You thought up a lie involving Ayers that will mean even less to the public.
- kineticarl, on 10/12/2008, -1/+18come on now, don't denigrate vikings!

- ironhide, on 10/12/2008, -1/+15nice to see that you provided no sourcing for that at all.
- woodsjransom, on 10/11/2008, -6/+20Has anyone noticed as of late that there are some new idiots in here posting some McCain/Palin propaganda articles about Barack Obama here in Digg? I think that everyone hitting the "ignore" button is great. HEAR THEM CRICKETS?
- inkswamp, on 10/12/2008, -1/+15This is the same goddamn tactic the Republicans pulled when they saw that Bill Clinton was going to beat George Bush Sr. Some of you here aren't probably old enough to recall this, but there was rampant rumor-mongering about how Bill Clinton was secretly a commie and was going to turn the U.S. into a communist country and turn us over to his masters in the USSR (I'm not making this ***** up either.) This was all tied into some travels Clinton had done through the USSR in his youth. That somehow meant he was a die-hard communist or a puppet of the Russians. Same thing here. The Republicans are trying to turn Obama into a threat by connecting some dots that add up to nothing.
- ashwinmudigonda, on 10/12/2008, -3/+17It is crystal ***** clear the qualities and levels of decency of McCain and Palin to any educated, literate, sane American. There can be no other explanation for the sudden drop in the popularity points. To think that McBush-Palin can drag this kind of muck into the race in the hope of WINNING the white house poses two serious concerns. Are these ***** Americans at all? And more importantly, all those retards who buy this ***** and think that McCain is right about anything...? Seriously, isn't it ***** like that who get us into trouble always?
- JMaj, on 10/12/2008, -0/+14Marilyn Shannon a McCain delegate, supported a woman who shot a abortion doctor in both arms. And blew up abortion clincs. At a rally McCain stood right there and witness Shannon talking about the woman and praising her. I believe Rachelle Shannon was the woman as well.
Anthony Bouscaren(McCain’s fellow Board Member, USCWF), Veteran of the Pioneer Fund, a Eugenics Group researching white superiority
Lenore Annenberg supports/endorses and donates to McCain, her and her husband, funded the board that Obama and Ayers sat on.
Liddy called for the murder of federal agents, served time in jail, plotted murder. John McCain praises him, calls him a good man. And has accepted donations from him.

- citizenhelder, on 10/12/2008, -0/+10Why is it that when liberals factcheck smears and are right, conservatives respond with "Get Over It"?
When Neo-cons get it wrong, they have to rewrite history and create 'facts'?

- darkciti2, on 10/12/2008, -0/+9When Clinton left office, the USA had a $3 Trillion dollar surplus.
Bush spent that money (and put $6 Trillion more on our childrens' credit cards).
I hope the Republicans like those brand new schools and hospitals that we built in Iraq.
We could've built a lot of great things here in the USA with that money.
Renewable Domestic (non-terrorist funding) Energy would have been a wise start. - ironhide, on 10/12/2008, -2/+11You were better off not providing the "source" - what a load.
- jbond, on 10/12/2008, -1/+10Are we in the middle of some kind of Mythic rerun of 1968->1972? How else to explain the appearance of The Weathermen, Ollie North and Gordon Lilly in this election.

- heystoopid, on 10/12/2008, -2/+10Still unable to comprehend or understand the simple word called truth , I see .
- oldgal, on 10/12/2008, -0/+8I rather suspect that the folks who buy into these claims are folks who made up their minds early-on based on the muslim emails. The polls are showing that these attacks are not helping McCain's numbers. So why are they continuing? The only acceptable reason I can think of is to make sure these supporters get out and actually vote. Not the type of behavior I want in my president.
- SammyJr, on 10/12/2008, -1/+9Free speech means that you're free to talk all you want. It doesn't guarantee an audience. People are sick of hearing McCain lies, so they ignore you. You're still free to deliver your message, untrue as it may be.
