- freedomjoe, on 03/31/2009, -25/+135These people are religious extremists, terrorists, and they should be treated as such. By the way, these are the people that Fox News showed footage of as they protested an Iraq War Vet's funeral and called them "liberals". Interesting how they don't want to claim their own dangerous nut jobs who Hate America and use religion as a weapon.
If anyone recognizes anyone in the video or pictures, you might want to steer clear; these folks are unhinged and committing treason, near as I can tell. Now, this president might be willing to overlook this, as he has many other such assaults, but that doesn't change the illegality or the immorality of their actions.
where is the GOP and the leaders of the Christian church denouncing such activity in their names? (yes, the GOP owns the Baptist vote and therefore has a responsibility to denounce their actions publicly). DO they really hate America this much? I can't imagine a world where these folks are ever allowed into power again.
SHAME ON THEM. AND SHAME ON THOSE WHO DO NOT CALL THEM OUT ON IT. - Batfishy, on 03/31/2009, -4/+62"a graduate student who helped put together the concurrent “Phelps-A-Thon” that raised money for every moment the Westboro Baptist Church members protested, netting $500 for Gays and Lesbians Opposing Violence."
ha ha Phelps. WBC loses, again, forever, always. - AgeofMastery, on 03/31/2009, -12/+70How long you think it will be till they have another website, "God Hates *****"?
If the Christian God really wanted to prove his existence, a volley of lightening bolts striking these hate mongering extremists would probably do the trick. The ***** they do in his name makes all Christians look bad. - inactive, on 03/31/2009, -5/+58***** Fred Phelps and Westboro Baptist Church
- clvngodess, on 03/31/2009, -10/+54This is a Domestic Terror Group. Or perhaps more accurately a mental health facility in severe need of medication. All the more reason we need single payer healthcare. These are not christians, they are nutters. Nutter butter peanut butter sandwich kookies. And they not fit for human consumption.
- idoj, on 03/31/2009, -4/+45Just sickening!
- vituperative01, on 03/31/2009, -5/+41If you haven't seen it, long ago when Michael Moore was funny he followed these jokers around with a "Sodom-mobile" and tormented them with super-flamers and tried to get them to sing show tunes. Anyone who would go torment with hate speech at a fallen soldier's funeral is about as low as you can get. They're despicable, and everyone knows it, but it's also a good time to look at yourself and question who you demonize. Consider the part of yourself that might contain a seed of the same horror. Regardless of your beliefs, do you make people who believe something else "evil" instead of just "people who disagree."
- swrostmore, on 03/31/2009, -4/+39Is there anything the Westboro Baptists don't protest? I think it's about time we stop feeding the trolls.
- Echota, on 03/31/2009, -8/+41Shirley Phelps-Roper is one Evil woman! She's the spawn of the devil!
FTA:
Earlier today, the Westboro Baptist Church, a Topeka, Kansas-based notorious anti-gay hate group infamous for protesting the funerals of U.S. soldiers killed in Iraq and for its inflammatory “God hates fags” trademark slogan and website, protested outside the White House. The group was hoping, in the words of founder Fred Phelps (whose family members constitute the majority of the group), to “[p]ray for God to SHORTLY destroy Antichrist!”—that is, President Barack Obama.
And that damn so called church needs shut down! It's not a church,it a terrorist organization!
I'm glad they gave the passerby a chance to comment....this is not the way a christian acts or believes! - freedomjoe, on 03/31/2009, -9/+39p.s. the woman says "God hates and Christ told her don't do that dumbass...ignoramous..."
yeah, sure sounds like the God and Christ we read about in the bible. I'm trying really hard not to hate these people. And I don't recall learning to call people "dumbass". - freedomjoe, on 03/31/2009, -3/+33Adding that at least there were a few people from the christian faith and the Republican party there, along with liberals, to stand together against this hate. I wish their leaders would stand up with them.
If we could all do that together, we would be a stronger nation. I salute those who stood up against this hate. - scottknick, on 03/31/2009, -11/+40These people are no different from the types that post on nearly every bit of WND drivel that hits Digg. The arguments are exactly the same. And so are the sentiments toward the President of the United States.
- normlsparky, on 04/01/2009, -3/+32Religion gone very wrong.
- SQLDigger, on 03/31/2009, -4/+30These guys are total *****, there is no doubt. Although they have the right to free speech as long as they're not committing violent acts or inciting anyone else to violence, I question whether they should be allowed anywhere near a funeral, because if it was my loved one who had been killed, they would be inciting me to violence against them.
Also, I know a lot of Christians, even those who qualify as fundamentalists, and I don't know any - ANY - who approve of what these guys say or do. So to those who have been overly quick to draw connections between the actions of these particular men and women and ANY part of the larger Christian community - you are way over the line. Many Christians have lost friends, children, brothers, sisters or parents to the war. Chances are, Fred Phelps and his clan piss them off at least as much as they do you. So have some respect, and try to cease being your reactionary selves for just a minute. - crunchdigg, on 04/01/2009, -3/+28please don't follow the tactic of calling everyone you don't like "terrorists".
They are not trying to terrorize anyone. They are spewing hate, and trying
to annoy, but they are *very* careful to follow all the legalities and do no physical
harm. They are clearly NOT trying to create terror.
I used to say "you mean 'vampires'" every time a coworker tried to use the
'terrorist' or 'communist' label for some random thing he didn't like, usually
some Democrat or someone pointing out the illegal actions of the
previous administration.
Don't use it as a catchall term for "something we don't like". - Dumbledorito, on 04/01/2009, -1/+23Sure, there's the inauguration, Air Force One, the speeches, the cheers...
...but one really doesn't feel like one is president unless a hate group calls you the Antichrist. - freedomjoe, on 03/31/2009, -13/+35It is....Not safe viewing for polite, civilized society. In other words, you typical day with the Wing Nut haters in this country.
- GamerXR72, on 04/01/2009, -2/+23As someone who works in IT, I can say that depending on where you work blocking streaming media is a good idea.
I can also tell you that "for security reasons" is some BS he came up with to explain it because it's easier to say that than to explain why to people who otherwise do understand. - chewbacca77, on 04/01/2009, -11/+32I can accurately represent every Christian I know by saying "These people have nothing to do with Christianity."
- freedomjoe, on 03/31/2009, -2/+22yeah, that guy was great. We need more Christians and church leaders to take a stand against this kind of hate.
- freedomjoe, on 03/31/2009, -2/+21and they are stepping on the flags on purpose and saying thank god for dead soldiers.
It's heartbreaking. - GamerXR72, on 04/01/2009, -4/+23Just figured Id pop in and point out that people slamming Islam as a religion should take note that the WBC is a christian group.
It's not religion that makes people psychotic *****, it's people that make people psychotic *****. - clvngodess, on 03/31/2009, -2/+21They're sick. They are very sick and they infect their youth with their virus. I don't care about flags per se, but it's the message they send and their belief in it that worries me. It's viral.
- freedomjoe, on 03/31/2009, -6/+24Yeah, that's what I was thinking, too. How sad. They are deranged. I wish leaders of the church and the GOP would take a stand against these lunatics. It's dangerous having them grow crazier by the day, with Glenn Beck and Rush and O'Rielly feeding them their favorite diet of FEAR and HATE.
- raleel, on 04/01/2009, -0/+18Have you ever seen these people. The hate in these people's faces is obvious, even when they are not yelling something ridiculous. It's unnaturally aged them. If I was a religious man, I might even think they wore the sign of the beast. It's just that clear.
- freedomjoe, on 03/31/2009, -1/+19It seems to me that a big warning sign should go off if you're using God's name/will to justify your actions, as if you believe he speaks only to you and that you alone can interpret his will.
If there is a God and he/she is creator of us all, and superior to us all, I don't see how any mortal can claim insider knowledge.
There is a song from Le Miz "to love another person is to see the face of God..."
Love, not hate, is the value we should hold in our hearts and what we should aspire to, regardless of our religion or lack of religion. - newfrickinshow, on 03/31/2009, -5/+22You know, if ever it was possible to assissinate a public personality without any fear of martyrdom, I think Fred Phelps might be the case. I get so sick of him going around attacking dead veterans and so many other innocents and good people while making their surviving relatives deal with Phelps' overcompensation and guilt after going into the woods one day with a friend and jerking each other off. He has spent the last 20+ years trying to get God forgiving him for liking the taste of semen, and the thought of him dragging all of us down over it makes me sick.
- freedomjoe, on 03/31/2009, -2/+19I agree. It's not the flags themselves, but the utter contempt behind the deliberate act. It blows my mind. What is the difference between those people and the Taliban? They are so sure they are right, that it's worth doing or saying anything to get their message out. I can only hope they don't take it the next step forward.
- DankBuddz, on 03/31/2009, -28/+45Damn, going to have to wait to see those videos until I get home. My idiot conservative IT manager blocks streaming media, along with private email for "security reasons". Following in our last President's footsteps I guess, on a somewhat smaller scale...
Sounds like a crazy story though. - Janinco, on 03/31/2009, -2/+18freedomjoe,
"Adding that at least there were a few people from the christian faith and the Republican party there, along with liberals, to stand together against this hate"[...]
"If we could all do that together, we would be a stronger nation. I salute those who stood up against this hate."
I agree freedomjoe! I have stood with fellow Americans at soldiers funerals in an attempt to shield the greiving families from these monsters! This is NOT a left or right issue, this is a human decency issue and I agree with clvngodessclvngodess that they are "a Domestic Terror Group".
There is NOTHING Christian about this group of people, and there
is nothing that Jesus taught that I see them even attempt to emulate.
There are many who have been fighting against this group for many years, and when it comes to our brave soldiers funerals, there are groups like the Rolling Thunder and the Patriot Guard Riders, to name just a few, who will make sure that the families of the soldiers do not see or hear these disgusting people! - x88justy, on 03/31/2009, -1/+16yay! Somebody who remembers the ultra-hilarious Michael Moore TV show. I like the serious material he does, too, but that TV show of his was excellent and very funny. He rode with the British spy-mobile that went around London busting poor people for watching the BBC without paying for it. He filmed guns being "smuggled" over the Canadian border -- pre-911, in the open, in plain sight of a frumpy border crossing.
- kurttrail, on 04/01/2009, -1/+15These aren't the only idiots calling Obama the Anti-Christ.
They have a right to Freedom of Speech, Assembly & Religion, but that said, we have a responsibility to make sure that their hate doesn't go unanswered. - vituperative01, on 03/31/2009, -2/+16That's actually a really good point. They're utterly despicable, but they have to be doing it because they want attention. Still it's hard to ignore someone who's protesting at a soldier's funeral and taunting the soldier's family. Given my natural inclination to want to throttle them at a minimum, I feel like I AM showing some restraint.
- dwninjungleland, on 04/01/2009, -3/+17Saw them walking home from the Inauguration concert in January. Almost launched myself at them ready to yell and fight, but my friend pulled me back and told me that "they make money off of people attacking them" and subsequently suing them. It's a pretty good scam, actually. They can get people riled enough to assault them and then pocket a ***** of cash. Don't fall for it.
- CaptCarrot, on 04/01/2009, -3/+17I've long been an opponent of the Westboro clan (as a Baptist myself, I cannot be moved to call them either Baptists or a Church), and have supported the Patriot Guard riders who often stand as a line of defense between the Westboros and grieving families as soldiers' funerals.
Fred Phelps and his family of lawyers are a blight on humanity. - Nodaki, on 04/01/2009, -3/+17"These people are religious extremists, terrorists, and they should be treated as such."
The 1st Amendment to the Constitution protects them. Move to Canada if you want speech restricted.
I am an atheist but I will defend to the death their right to be complete ***** douchebags. - brainus, on 04/01/2009, -2/+16Do we really need to use loaded words? The work these people do is disgusting enough on its own. Referring to protesters as terrorists is probably a trend we don't want to encourage.
- Decimit, on 04/01/2009, -0/+14You must be reading the edited version. I believe the original ended with "...if they completely agree with everything you believe in and you happen to feel like it at the time."
- inactive, on 04/01/2009, -2/+16I like how they're clearly mentally ill but apparently no one's allowed to say it because they claim its their religion.
- dizzythegreat, on 04/01/2009, -0/+14Hate group, more accurately. Just like The KKK, Neo-Nazi's, Church of the Creator, Nation of Islam, etc.
- Mnementh2230, on 04/01/2009, -1/+15"True... but they're just not as tactful at it as Democratic Congressmen."
And with that comment, atomheartmother, you expose yourself as a partisan shill. - Mnementh2230, on 04/01/2009, -2/+15I'm not normally one to advocate violence against "peaceful" protesters...
I wonder if "God Hates Fags" would count as "fighting words"... - XxtraLarGe, on 04/01/2009, -3/+16These people are Christian in name only. There is nothing about their behavior that Jesus would advocate. If they really were Christians, they would be praying for Barack Obama to be a good leader, not praying for his destruction.
- inactive, on 04/01/2009, -4/+17You're a *****.
- inactive, on 04/01/2009, -2/+15Well at least they're giving the department of homeland security something to do.
- Hetman, on 03/31/2009, -4/+16So we should ignore them? They are not just going to go away.
- dizzythegreat, on 04/01/2009, -0/+12People associate the strongest image with the entire group. In other words, the loudest people do the talking.
- flammablewater, on 04/01/2009, -0/+12fundies gone wild
- DrVic, on 04/01/2009, -1/+13These people really suck.
If there is a hell, I'll see you there Mr. Phelps. - x1soundgarden1x, on 04/01/2009, -2/+14Why doesn't anyone ever ask them to explain Jesus saying "I give you a new commandment, that you love one another." (John 13:34-35) Doesn't that message override their whole way of life?
