So, now the Speaker of the House of the United States Representatives is admitting outright (on national television!) that he and the GOP, from the start, viewed this matter as a primarily political one?
I don't know much about Hastert. Is he retarded? - tomboy501, on 10/12/2007, -3/+26...what might even be worse is the spin starting to come out that Foley's behavior is somehow due to the "evils of alcohol".
I think they are just trying everything in the Capitol Hill Damage-Control Playbook. - zackz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11You are either with us or with the pedophiles
- amoirae, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12Why is there not more of a public outcry to get this sleazebag to step down?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+14Those Diebold machines are going to have a time redirecting all those votes, but I'm sure with some grit and a naive green college intern, they'll pull through!
- zackz, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11To karmatic: You guys can't even get a digg vote, how do you expect a 'landslide' victory in the elections?
BTW, I dugg you down - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8That guy is giving drunks a bad name.. I bet every drunk in america is pissed because this idiot is saying that drinking will cause you to be a pedophile...
geez... it's not 16 year old scotch he's got a problem with, its 16 year old boys... - bigturns, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8From the article:
"HASTERT: No, I’m not saying. I just don’t recall him telling me that. If he would have told me that, he would have told me that in the context of maybe a half a dozen or a dozen other things. I don’t remember that."
I wonder what such a list could have looked like, given the fact Hasert claims the information was lost in the pile of things that could affect the Evangelical Right during the next election. If I were in such a party, my list might look as follows.
1) Foley is a sexual predator who potentially has had 'sexual relations' with underage boys.
2) Foley is a sexual predator who potentially has had 'sexual relations' with underage boys.
...
...
6) Foley is a sexual predator who potentially has had 'sexual relations' with underage boys.
Even still, if only one of the bullet items were to indicate such an allegation I would think, Hasert, would have remembered.
The Evangelical Right is missing the boat. They should have run Foley up the pole as an example to their base. Instead, we are given the same old, tried and true, lies and deception. “I don’t remember that”. Let’s see, who else in the Republican Party has used that line at least a dozen times this week? Ms. Rice? - eclectro, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9yeah, it's all a conspiracy. Maybe if Hastert had dealt with the problem a few months ago, it wouldn't be a campaign issue now. Too bad for them.
- tofuoni, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8"the GOP, from the start, viewed this matter as a primarily political one?"
*sigh* no, that's not what he's saying. Some months ago someone made an accusation against foley that he was having an impropper relationship. As part of that accusation, they released emails (emails, not the IMs) to newspapers. The newspapers didn't think it was a big deal. In this interview Hastert is talking about the emails that he saw at the same time the newspapers saw them. He thought, "yeah this guy might be over the line (the emails are overly friendly but not sexual in nature like the IMs)" so Hastert thought, "I need to talk to this guy and be ready when this comes up in the campaign"
But then later the IMs came out - and obviously, the IMs are *way* over the line. - Denver80203, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Dear Mr Hastert
Remember that Clinton thing? Bush bringing honor back to The White House?
Yeah well... payback's a bitch. - FlaG8r, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7You do know that it was the pages themselves that had these emails and IMs?
- tsf5000, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7the old "i don't recall" excuse. made famous by scandal-ridden politicians everywhere. its pretty much an admission of guilt nowadays.
- ravedave, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8Hah those interns are smart, wait till he's up for re-ellection then nail him. Exxxxllleeent.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Speaking of Tom Reynolds, check out his recent use of children as human shields in front of reporters to avoid Foley questions:
http://digg.com/politics/NRCC_Head_uses_small_children_as_props_to_avoid_Foley_questions - carlosglz, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8I am pretty good at reading people... by the way the corners of his lips are positioned, his stumbling with words, his constant nodding yes, and the movements of his eyebrows and eyes, in my opinion, this guy is lying through his teeth when he says he doesn't "recall" being told about the emails.
- vectorprime, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5For those of us who do care, the kids who shot up Columbine were actively into neo-nazism, and he unabomber was acting specifically to promote an anti-technology political agenda.
And besides, you're missing the point. This isn't about self-identification. This is about community involvement and community response. The evidence suggests that the republican senators attempted to cover this up, which speaks poorly of them as a community and, by extention, the party they represent. - tucsonwc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3So he is a pedophile because of alcohol, when he is not drunk he hits on women?
WTF?
Ok, let's see how THAT plays out to the sheeple base. - jknevitt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Foley is the same kind of sick individual as the guy who "dreamed" of molesting kids and decided to shoot up an Amish school in Pennsylvania, and yet the Republicans will try and spin this as "Wah, the Democrats are out to get us! They're just politicizing 9/1-- er, Foley's 'alcoholism'! Wah!"
If the roles were reversed and it was a majority Democrat they'd want to string him up and let him rot. Why not for one of their own? - eburetto, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4"Dems soft on terrorists"
"Rebublicans soft on pedophiles" ???? - ajmagnu, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5do you have that intern's email address?
- ArcticCelt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2According to republicans it's the fault of those damn naughty attractive young boys who tempted the poor Foley. Of course those young "beasts" are part of some left wing conspiracy.
- geekee, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3"You do know that it was the pages themselves that had these emails and IMs?"
Who did they give them to? Who gave the info to ABC, and when? Quit burying your head in the sand and admit that someone did this for political gain. - danielwsmithee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yeah this is the most perplexing thing of all. Why now? What happened that caused the pages to wait. Just because they were Pages does not mean they do not have political motives of there own. I think the Pages are a lot smarter then people are giving them credit for. They realized this guy was creepy from the initial emails saw that the corrupt politicians weren't going to do anything about it. So one or two of them faked interest in the congressman and released right before election thus screwing the perp. and the scumbags that should have been protecting them. I applaud them if this is the case.
- interiot, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4It's still not even clear 1) of the specific things that Mark Foley did, what parts were illegal (the age of consent in DC is 16). There are different ages of consent for different activities (eg. having actual sex while in DC would not have been illegal in the least, while IM'ing over state lines may be). And 2) if specific actions on Mark Foley's part were illegal, it's not clear whether the information the other GOP members knew about where the legal bits or the illegal bits. (and covering up legal but politically unpallatable issues may look a little bad, but I don't think it's nearly as bad as covering up for illegal acts)
Certainly, from a political standpoint, a 60 year old man pursuing a 16 year old boy looks bad, and would obviously have had a strongly negative reaction from the voters. But the legal bits will take some time to clarify. They'll almost certainly take until after the elections, and would take that long, even if the democrats were in the majority. - Sunwalker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Check out these side by side photos of Denny Hastert and Cardinal Bernard Law. The picture tells the story, but the blog article fills in the details about leaders protecting pedophiles in their organization.
http://www.dailykos.com/story/2006/10/1/92456/8536 - greymaxcat, on 10/12/2007, -7/+8The timing of the release of this 3 year old info is about as blatantly political as possible. Someone knew about this and sat on the info until it was politically prudent to release it.
that being said, this Foley scumbag deserves the exact treatment that all the democrats who ***** underage pages got... - ArcticCelt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The sad thing is that I agree. I bet the Republicans will win in the end. This can possibly mean two things:
Either a majority of people Have no problem closing their eyes on pedophilia.
Either Diebold is doing a hell of a job for the Republicans. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4I feel sorry for Foley, really. If that kid was just a little bit older, Foley could've switched parties and gotten a kick-ass book deal and media tour. He would've been a hero instead of a goat.

http://rikki-tikki-tavis-garden.blogspot.com/ - qwertydvorak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i am not going to go into any who is wrong or right issues here. why is this the only issue people have ? the issue i have is: why do these people whom we pay our hard earned tax dollars to, and give a pension for life to, have this kind of time on their hands ? yet they never read the bills they sign into legislation ? THAT IS WHAT PEOPLE SHOULD BE PISSED ABOUT ! ! !
yes, he is wrong, and alot of the people we send to do our governing do wrong things and get caught. but they are human and make mistakes and will hopefully be punished for those things. but we send them to do a job, and they can't do that job fully. but they can all show up for fundraisers, and go to parties, and golf. i know alot of small business owners who work hard and are affected by these people, and they have almost no life, because they work 80 hours a week. maybe if these people were forced to work harder for "we the people" they wouldn't have time to diddle interns and pages. - danielwsmithee, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I think he was referring to Hastert not Foley who already did. Foley should go to prison Hastert should be investigated. Do I think he should resign probably not because there is not much evidence that he knew any details. If the emails were benign enough for the media to overlook I can't fault Hastert for overlooking them either. If he knew about the IM's he should resign and go to prison with Foley.
- ajmagnu, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3It's only been 2 days but I'm already sick of this story. For one, I have faith that law enforcement will take care of this issue that doesn't affect my life at all. Secondly, I'm not too worried about "our children" when they're 16 year old boys. Most boys are already drinking and driving by the time they're 16--not exactly the most vulnerable victims. My 16 year old self could kick my own ass today. Thirdly, what's going on in Iraq, or the warning Condi got on Sept. 10th, 2001 about Al Queda? All I hear on the news is this lame one-off sex scandal... this is the kind of story for Dateline.

-- karmatic, I dugg you down as well. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -20/+2I'm so sick of radical Left-Wing liberal Clinton-ites spewing ***** lies and propaganda... I can't wait to see the Republicans landside victory of the elections
