There’s a lot in this clip. Chris Matthews (at 06:00) wonders if the US is becoming a fascistic police state. He describes the Iraq invasion as “democracy at gunpoint” and then adds:
“I wonder if it has filtered back here at home. I wonder if it’s drift back home. The idea that democracy is something you do at gunpoint. Either you behave and do it this way ...or you are an insurgent; therefore we can round you up and, if you resist, we can kill you.
“That notion is a bit fascist, and it’s certainly a fascistic notion of democracy we are forcing on people over there ...and I wonder now whether we are picking up some of the bad habits of the war front.” - quakerorts, on 10/10/2007, -6/+24For once we have a reasoned, intelligent discussion on tv... well, except for Chris Matthews who seems to be in love with the sound of his voice. STFU Chris and let your guests speak.
- cmcagle, on 10/10/2007, -0/+12Supreme Court Justice Hugo Black said the following in his dissent of the Barenblatt v. US case (had to do with HUAC anti-communism hearings) which is more than relevant today:
"Ultimately, all the questions in this case really boil down to one--whether we as a people will try fearfully and futilely to preserve democracy by adopting totalitarian methods, or whether in accordance with our traditions and our Constitution we will have the confidence and courage to be free." - kufu91, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10Freedom of speech is absolute (as in the supreme law of the land). the only (and i mean ONLY) exceptions are speech that causes immediate harm and speech that infringes on other rights (such as privacy,). this is a very hard concept to follow but the rewards are innumerable. yes we may have idiots screaming to take away the rights of others but think of how valuable to at any time say what you want, organize with whoever, or turn the tides of public opinion. if we have people denied the right to speak what they want then we have less support for defending it in the future. if we don't stick up for others right to free speech then we will lose it.
- kaelyiesta, on 10/10/2007, -5/+14Part of that quote would have had me in tears laughing on the ground if it weren't such an important issue:
“Either you behave and do it this way ...or you are an insurgent; therefore we can round you up and, if you resist, we can kill you. That notion is a bit fascist[...]"
A bit? - darling, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8When I first watched the taser video, I thought to myself, "That guy was being an annoying ass, maybe he didn't deserve tasering, but he needed to get kicked out." After watching this video, I started feeling something. I wasn't sure what it was at first, but it turned out I felt like crying. It's so sad that this is the state of our country, our democracy, and our freedom.
- syroncoda, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6this is what a police state looks like
- longman, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5I'm sorry guys, but the little shred of democracy you have left will soon be gone. You guys need to get of these forums and take some action. Right now.
- NEWNHLISLAME, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5FOrget Repub or Democrat, Its your rights being Stopmed On!
- NEWNHLISLAME, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5So very twisted! In a so called democracy, are not the people allowed to ask the tough questions,
To shy away from controversy, is surely an admission of guilt! - Vodka2389, on 10/10/2007, -3/+7They made a good point about the US forcing democracy upon everybody, meanwhile they don't practice what they preach themselves.
- savethehobos, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4I think you're missing the point. This idea of a war on terror and the fanaticism that it has caused has caused this. Its not so much Bush's fault as it is all of D.C's fault.
- jumbalia, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4isn't it the point tho that if the government acted in a respectible and lawful manor according to the wishes of the people there wouldn't be protestors in the first place, and therefore the fact that there are (and an increasingly large amount) mean that the government is not acting in the wishes of the people. How often do u see people protesting for war in times of peace? (not that there has really been a period in American History where we have not been at war or had troops deployed) None! Because people don't want war. It is something forced upon them by their governments who then try to convince them it's for their own good. And your comment about the dems being just as bad is true. But don't make it about reps vs. dems. People like that woman Matthews was interviewing don't protest for the cause of a political party. They protest to fight for our rights, so that you and I can have sites like digg and openly critisize the government and have our two opinions.

- hotspot102, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4Freedom of speech dissolved long ago.
- MrXfromPlanetX, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I know people keen seeing Ron Paul (10 term Congressmen from Texas) all over, but there's a reason for this.
Ron Paul wants to restore habeas corpus (the right to challenge your detention). I bill in the Senate to restore it was voted down yesterday. Congressman Ron Paul voted against the Patriot Act, and has tried to repeal it. Hilary voted for it and has done nothing to repeal it. Barack Obama, who I was going to vote for, has talked about increasing foreign spending by 50 billion and going into Pakistan.
What is not often mentioned is that most of the other candidates--of both parties--are members of the CFR, the Council on Foreign Relations. This is an insidious group that has, since 1921, successfully undermined the sovereignty of our Republic. Thanks to David Rockefeller and his CFR, the U.S. has entered the U.N., GATT, NAFDA, the WTO and, perhaps soon, the North American Union. Ron Paul opposes all of this.
The CFR candidates are: Giuliani, McCain, Fred Thompson, Romney, Clinton, Edwards, Obama and Joe Biden. Other members include: Dick Cheney, Donald Rumsfeld, George Bush I, II, George Stephanopolous, Rupert Murdoch, Chris Wallace and about 1,000 more.
I don't agree on everything this man has to say, but I believe he's the only polotician who will really represent us. That's why the he's not getting the media coverage he deserves.
When I first heard of Ron Paul I thought he was crazy, and then as I started looking into the guy, I eat my words. Don't believe the media smear campaign. The things they say would be the worst, are the things that would help the poor and middle class the most like returning us to a gold standard http://www.dealbreaker.com/2007/09/greenspan_bums_ ...
Please check the guy out. Join a Ron Paul meetup group ronpaul.meetup.com. We need to get off our asses and do something.
We are going to have to get off our asses and fight to make our country free again, please check into Ron Paul for president.

- fixedcoma, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Since when did we become the terrorists! Was it when the Reps. invaded iraq! What NORAD was too stupid to send up some jets to knock out a couple of airliners out of the sky after noticing they were off course for more than an hour?
- Scheissen, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I added my block to ban you.
By the way, I'm conservative but not a neocon. - BlacklabelSAR, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2"but the government cannot (morally) require someone else to allow you to say what you wish on their property"???????? WE are supposed to BE the governemnt, so that's OUR land.
- Randinn, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Sad but true....
- shig, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I assume you wouldn't have been able to give a reason for it either. You'd have also waited till he begged you not too, then tasered him to extract the maximum about of America-killing pleasure.
- deanpence, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Actually, what you're talking about is the difference of speech in public or on government-owned land and speech in a private setting on someone else's property. You can (to some extent and under most circumstances) say what you wish in public, but the government cannot (morally) require someone else to allow you to say what you wish on their property.
- BlacklabelSAR, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I bet you call yourself a Christian too right? Christ was the most famously liberal hippie of all time. Oh and nice screen-name. Labeling and judging people? Just like Jesus? Oh that's right, he said NOT to do those things.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2I honestly don't give a ***** if the troops come home or not; I just don't want to have to pay for it. Let them subsidize themselves over there if they think they're doing such a great thing.
- maz2331, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Dude, we need Liberals around... if just for entertainment value.
- Batfishy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Robotfuel - I was there too. They cracked me up with their flags. All 30 of them.

- WNW3, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1At least we have the internet...can you imagine life without even this outlet? At least we aren't alone in our outrage. Powerless, yes. But alone, no.

- Scheissen, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I just think freedom of speech can't be life threatening and you can't yell "fire" in a crowded theater without any reasonable evidence.

http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t275/mykalversi ...
I've never understood this position. Are you simply saying that since we are allowed to protest in this country we shouldn't? When we see something wrong occuring we shouldn't voice our concern because we can?
When you find out Iraq started selling ONLY to non-US countries due to our embargo on them and sold it in Euros exclusively on March 18th 2003 and then we invaded them on March 20th 2003 and we find something wrong with that...no questions should be asked because we are allowed to ask questions?
http://www.ratical.org/ratville/CAH/RRiraqWar.html
When we find out that as of June 2007 that Iran is now demanding Yen for oil and not USD and talks of invasion are splattered all over Fox News we shouldn't question history repeating itself because we live in this free country where we can voice our dissent so in effect shouldn't?

Do you see why reality has a well known liberal bias?
On a completely unrelated note Fox News apparently has its own store in airports:

What are the Dems going to do now that their moveon.org tinfoil hat crew has turned on them? Weren't Kerry and Rodham-Clinton supposed to be their saviors?
