- inactive, on 05/17/2009, -15/+76I can't speak for Republicans but as a libertarian I'm very happy. Even though there is virtually no chance my views are going to become a political reality, life is much more fulfilling when you take responsibility for your own life and stop expecting the government to solve your problems for you.
- shupy, on 05/17/2009, -74/+133Well they do say that ignorance is bliss.
Guess that is why old white Republicans are happy. - oboshoe, on 05/17/2009, -1/+46Its probably the reversed.
Those who are happy with their lots in life tend to be conservative. I.e. they don't want to change things. Why go around changing everything when you like it just the way it is?
Those who are unhappy and angry about their lot want to change things. I.e. Progressive/liberal.
Hell, the last election was based on angry voters who wanted "change" - drewski526, on 05/17/2009, -11/+51funny... i thought happiness is a warm gun
- inactive, on 05/17/2009, -27/+66And white.
Don't forget white. - mollydog12, on 05/17/2009, -54/+87shupy.
no. not at all. you reach an age you've made what you're gonna make your children are old enough to go it on their own, and you can turn your mind and efforts to things other than providing for a family and working. if you've invested conservatively, worked hard and saved out of every paycheck, lived within your means is what i'm saying, chances are even in this economy you'll be ok. i'm enjoying life more now than i ever have because i worked hard to get here and paid all the bills along the way. i don't owe anyone, have a little money stashed, and if my luck holds will never have to work another day unless i want to.
ignorance ? ignorance is spending what you don't have and believing that gov't will do for you what you should do for yourself. i'm 53 and too stupid, white, male, and republican not to know how ignorant i am. .
wait. i take it back. ignorance is bliss. - Sarcoidosis, on 05/17/2009, -2/+34From The Article:
"If you're thinking that Republicans are happy just because they perhaps make more money, that does not seem to be the case. The study that found Republicans to be happier than Democrats also showed that it held true even after adjusting for income."
I can't speak to male or old, but it seems they looked at part of that assertion and put it aside. - qwerter, on 05/17/2009, -4/+31They don't seem very happy when they're yelling at me to get off their lawn.
- bettverboten, on 05/17/2009, -9/+32I want to digg you up 1000 times!
What you say is a universal truth... - ultraseamus, on 05/17/2009, -2/+25Why exactly did you feel you had to explain the joke to everyone in the second line?
- julian02392, on 05/17/2009, -11/+28I highly doubt your political affiliations has a roll in your happiness.
There is so much more to life than that. - SpinningHead, on 05/17/2009, -14/+29Yeah, thats why dems are all into torture and war. Oh, wait...
- exspasticcomics, on 05/17/2009, -10/+25as Mark Twain once said 'there are 3 types of lies in this world- lies, damned lies & statistics...'
or in short-
whatever. LOL. - billraydrums, on 05/17/2009, -20/+35That study is flawed. White Republican older males don't seem very happy right now.....The ones who listen to Rush and Billo and Hannity and Savage aren't that's for sure!
- EnnuiStudent, on 05/17/2009, -0/+15@oboshoe
Why, I believe you made one of the first good points in this comment section. - inactive, on 05/17/2009, -6/+20It's funny I don't think the mythical characterization, of the 'rich white republican' even exists. What you have are a lot of men (and some women) who have worked very hard through pure tenacity and the willingness to use their God given talents to prosper- and then you have those that will never have that inate will to succeed who are jealous and want success handed to them. My dad had to work his ass off for 25 years, and continues to, went back to work two weeks after a heart-attack- and I guarantee you, all of you sniveling liberals would accuse him of being a rich-old republican- a cold-hearted capitalist that needs to think of his fellow man. Still trying to figure out where in the constitution it says that we are responsible for the guy who didn't work as hard as the guy above him, oh that's right it doesn't because this wasn't meant to be a collectivist society.....
Happiness is different for every person, but I can safely say that those old white republicans, found happiness through hard work, and the gratification of earning what they have on their own. - Techchef, on 05/17/2009, -4/+18HEY... I'm Old, Male and Republican! Where can I pick-up my Happiness?
- oboshoe, on 05/17/2009, -4/+18So you are calling someone racist because they are old, male and conservative?
That makes you a bigot. - Skeptica, on 05/17/2009, -31/+45Except for Dick Cheney, who has turned into a grumpy old man. The reason why OLD MALE REPUBLICANS are happier than most is because they are also RICH.
- LogicalWisdom, on 05/17/2009, -3/+16For once a study that actually validates my experience.
As I get older, I've become significantly more happy. Why because I worked hard, put myself through college working a 3rd shift factory job and with my student loans recently paid off I'm starting to accumulate wealth. Money really does buy happiness, not because of the material possessions I can buy, but because it gives me choices, I can do a lot of things now because I want to, I don't have to think about what I'm giving up to do something, It also gives me more freedom, if I don't like my job, if I don't like where I live I can quit, I can leave. The truth though is things are going so well right now, why would I want to?
If people would stop worrying about what other people are doing and focus on what they can do to improve themselves, if people would stop believing they are entitled to what other people have and learn to live within their means; I think most people would find their happiness rise dramatically. - inactive, on 05/17/2009, -7/+19Wasn't there also another study a while back that said that happy people are more likely to be *****, in terms of not giving back to the community and whatnot?
- LouisCipher777, on 05/17/2009, -0/+12money may not be happiness, but it does take away a lot of the issues that make you unhappy.
- ultraseamus, on 05/17/2009, -4/+16Shhhh, you are destroying the point he was trying to make with actual facts. Besides, he put rich in all caps, it must be true.
- xedd, on 05/17/2009, -4/+15This is based upon data released in Feb... of 2006.

I bury. - LonelyTylenoL, on 05/17/2009, -4/+14And it takes a large group of people, or in some cases, another government to intervene and solve that problem, preferably using diplomacy.
- inactive, on 05/17/2009, -19/+29The people who stole every ones money are bound to be happier than the ones who had it stolen.
- inactive, on 05/17/2009, -13/+23The biggest national and global problem is a lack of individual freedom. If there was more of that in the world many problems such as poverty or starvation would be solved.
- tasine, on 05/17/2009, -1/+11When people talk about "happiness", I'm not real sure what they're talking about. I think of happiness as an event, a single though repetitive event as people cannot be happy constantly. Happiness is very, very subjective and not the best term to use. People have different perceptions of "happiness".
Some people are not happy because they prefer to be unhappy. Some are unhappy unnecessarily so. Some are unhappy because of deep-seated guilt and/or anger and/or jealousy. I wonder if the better term to have used in this survey may have been "contentment" or "peace". I am not always happy, but am always at peace and/or content. The way I explain it is that "all is well in my world".
It never ceases to amaze me that so many here on Digg seem so very unhappy, usually those who should have no reason to be unhappy as politically things have gone their way. What must it take to make these people happy? - Bodhinature, on 05/17/2009, -4/+13And I haven't met a Republican who wasn't angry, bitter, or mean spirited. What's your point?
- ShoujoKakumei, on 05/17/2009, -6/+15"Conservatives are happier because we don't spend all day trying to come up with reasons to deny reality."
Just ways to restrict the lives of other people. - SpinningHead, on 05/17/2009, -8/+17That comes with awareness. Its like the parents who want to know when their kid does something wrong so they can work to make them a better person vs. the parents who just feel "so blessed with my little angel who could never do anything wrong".
- nullvector, on 05/17/2009, -7/+16Well, it stands to reason that those who want less govt interaction in their lives would be more happy than those who want govt to control everything in theirs.
Has nothing to do with individual ideas or opinions, just the general viewpoint that life is what you make of it, rather than life being what the government hands you. - yoderizer, on 05/17/2009, -2/+11You forgot to read the article. Wealth was controlled in the comparison.
- inactive, on 05/17/2009, -11/+19While conservatives just hate everyone else. (unless you aren't born yet)
- MofS, on 08/13/2009, -21/+29did you miss the "Reply" button or did you just want your comment to get more attention?
- LoneStarLizard, on 05/17/2009, -27/+35Conservatives are happier because we don't spend all day trying to come up with reasons to deny reality. We take responsibility for our own lives and our families, work hard, and don't wait around for the government to take care of us. Happiness is taking responsibility for your own situation.
- wreckosaurus, on 05/17/2009, -6/+14Dude you're the angriest, most bitter, crazy ***** on digg. I don't think I've ever seen a post by you that wasn't foaming at the mouth about lie-beruls.
- anthropodeus, on 05/17/2009, -2/+10our debt, as a percentage of GDP, has been much higher before. in fact, it has been over 100%:
http://zfacts.com/p/318.html - USER1236, on 05/17/2009, -6/+13I just want to have sex.... that's all really.
- thatguy331, on 05/17/2009, -6/+13Well, how many people living in trailer parks, getting welfare and food stamps, vote republican?
The folks that always want more and more free ***** always vote Democrat, because they cater to those people.
Most republicans I know are working class stiffs that don't want the government in their pockets, taking their money to pay for more benefits for the poor & lazy.
Hell, if I get laid off, I get $400 unemployment / week.... While nice, what incentive does that give me to go find any job where I make less than $10 / hour? NONE, might as well stay at home. Now, if the government was giving me welfare for 10 years, why work a McJob when I get free money?!?! - LoneStarLizard, on 05/17/2009, -14/+21Because everything in life is about race. What a backwards way to look at the world.
- USAOwnz, on 05/17/2009, -20/+27Oh boy ignorance is an understatement.
- SpinningHead, on 05/17/2009, -15/+22Its easier to be happy when you can focus on yourself and rally around war like its a football game while feeling no responsibility for the next generation to have the same great infrastructure that gave you your own opportunities. Im sure never having to question your actions or ideology helps too.
- audiorage18, on 05/17/2009, -1/+8O NOES NOT THE GIVERMENT!!!!!!
- MrInfallible, on 05/17/2009, -1/+8There is it's called Des Moines
- peticsu, on 05/17/2009, -9/+16we know, thats why every time you post on digg, its something about liberals or democrats...
- LonelyTylenoL, on 05/17/2009, -3/+10You're an idiot.
I'm sorry, but really, it doesn't work that way. - colasrtney, on 05/17/2009, -2/+9..with a warm gun, of course.
- bratterscain, on 05/17/2009, -2/+9I'm afraid it is too. There's lots of suffering in the world and to ignore it is to be more satisfied with your own reality. Though the opposite can be true, also, which is to be ignorant of all the good things about life and absorbed into painful realities. I find a good mix is inbetween, though that is also just an arbitrary line as anyone else's. So I really don't think anyone can critique because we're all sometimes optimists or pessimists, sometimes depending on situations and conditions. I've come to terms that anyone's take on reality is just as valid as my own, though some I just can't agree with because I haven't been in those conditions and emotions as the one possessing those opinions.
- alandil, on 05/17/2009, -17/+23They say if you are young and conservative you have no heart and if you are old and liberal you have no brain.
It's not about ignorance, it is about the development of logic and reason and seeing that liberal policies simply never work. -
