- dracostimpy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13Hagel probably wants to run for president at some point, so he's rightfully distancing himself from the black sheep of the party. When rats jump ship, however, they're still rats.
- otheruser, on 10/12/2007, -5/+16Seriously, it's about time Congress puts a stop to this madness. Terrific video.
- vietvet, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Hagel has ruled himself out of the Republican presidential primaries, and for what? Mere patriotism. Not a real Republican -- where Greed always triumphs Over Patriotism!

The end of the world didn't happen for us, but is sure a ***** did for alot of other people. Head on down to blockbuster and rent The Killing Fields ... "Never again" my ass.
@revisrev
No, it isn't what "they" do. It's what they have done because 'they' have lived in oppression. They aren't educated, they don't have freedom of the press, they live in a cesspool of state-sponsored propaganda that is even worse than the daily kos. If you were told, from the time you were a child, that the Jews were pigs who deserved to be slaughtered, what would you believe? Their societies will have a chance when their governments don't brainwash them. Lastly, in case you forgot, the world ain't that small any more (notice anything missing from lower Manhattan?). We are not going to be free and safe until other people in the world allow us to be ... especially other people with billions of dollars in oil money. - marmanukem, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Haha, she has the best evil eyes in the whole administration.
- revisrev, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4@themonkman
Don't strawman me. I didn't say anything about republican or the Bush administration. The current republicans are not conservative, you sir are confused, misinformed or just looking for a fight. I agree with you about this administration. Republicans and neocons are not conservatives. Republican is a party, conservative is a philosophy. You took what i said all kinds of wrong. - Ark7, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4"We backed out of Viet Nam; the end of the world didn't happen."
Not for you, but tell it to the millions of South Vietnamese who were systematically slaughtered after we did. Oh, that's right, they have brown skin: they don't matter. Just like the Iraqis.
You "progressives" are all the same: talk about peace, brotherhood, and making a better world for everyone, but when it comes to any kind of sacrifice of your own personal comfort for anyone else, you want to bug the ***** out at the first chance. Especially if it's some third-world country where the people don't have the same color skin as you. What a ***** joke. - wm2010russ, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7i love chuck hagel. im voting for him in the republican primaries.... hes what the republicans need right now
- revisrev, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Yea, I'm looking at this Ron Paul, who I saw on another dug article. He condemns the neocon agenda without sounding too much like he's wearing a foil hat. Very libertarian but looking to get the republican nomination, I'll hope and pray he gets it and ends up against Obama, and then some bad skeletons come out of Obama's closet just in time. I can always hope.
- mttrvn, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Most of the Iraqi people don't want the US's help though, according to polls. Most Iraqi people think things were better before the US invaded. The US can't stop religious factions from killing each other if that is what they want to do. They will just wait until the US leaves and then start the madness again.
Maybe Bush should focus on getting Bin Laden finally... - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I don't think Ron Paul would ever run for prez agian. But, if he did, I'm pretty sure I'd sell all I own, quit my job and follow him around like the Dead. I'd be the #1 wonk on his campaign.
Too bad that the congress would stonewall him if he ever got elected. He's just to "radical." :( - mga911, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I would've loved to hear her response. Any video links out there?
- revisrev, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The problem is that what will happen will happen and that's the way it is. We do not have nearly enough troops over there to stop these zealots from killing each other, and even if we did it wouldn't be worth the cost to us. I really just don't care that much for Iraqis one way or the other. The ship is sinking, just because we're the ones who put the hole in the side of it doesn't mean that we should go down with it. We really need to get out of the business of building nations and get back into the business of fixing ours. The only reasons to stay over there now are political.
On this video: can't watch it, currently on the net in public with no speakers, but I like what I'm reading in the transcript. We are merely there to prolong the engagement. Whether we leave now or later they will be killing each other for a long time. It's what they do, they're good at it. Wasn't the entire idea of invading Iraq to get them before they get us. Well, how about getting the hell out so they can get each other more easily and forget about us. - mttrvn, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6Hopefully congress can stop Bush before Iraq escalates into Vietnam 2.0
- anengineer, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5
We backed out of Viet Nam; the end of the world didn't happen.
"Think for a few minutes about what would happen if we just up and backed out of everything......." - Vash265, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I really hope there's some sarcasm there. Try not to avoid collateral damage? I'm sorry, but not only is that the most immoral thing I've ever heard, but it's also one of the most cowardly things. If you really don't care about the tens, possibly and reportedly hundreds of thousands of Iraqi civilians we've already killed in collateral damage, why not just go the extra mile and break out the first atomic attack since World War II? Surely it would end the insurgency in Iraq. Who cares about civilians? Humans? ...their lives....
The fact is, we're involved in a war that was started with several lies, continued on even more lies, and is now being escalated against the will of the majority of our citizens. Backing out of this war isn't a cowardly act. It's a rationale, moral, and logical decision that should have been made when Bush's claims about WMD's and stockpiles of chemical warfare were left with out hard proof even four years after the claims were made. I really can't believe there would still be people supporting this war and what we're doing there. Taking Saddam out of power was probably an inevitability, but due to a poor strategy and lack of foresight, we incited a civil war for the real seat of power there.
There is no way to win this war. It's like watching a game of chess and still expecting to win. When will our job be complete? When all the terrorists are dead? First of all, if that's our goal, Iraq isn't the place to be trying to accomplish it. Second...it's an impossible goal. There are always going to be people working to destroy our country, and every other country. Terrorists have been around since the dawn of civilization. It's how revolution's take place, and it's how they'll continue to happen. They aren't going to disappear, no matter how many people we kill. Staying in Iraq won't help that problem. However, leaving Iraq probably won't help things for the Iraqis either, but what Iraq needs right now is stability, and as much as I'd hate to say it, seeing one side in this civil war take a decisive victory, as unlikely as that is, would bring more stability to the region than us staying there, and it has a lot better chance of happening if we stop being involved in matters that simply aren't our business.
The madman that was Saddam has been taken out of power, but at such extreme costs financially and politically to America that I can almost assure you it wasn't worth it. He was a horrible man, but if you look at things from an unbiased, neutral perspective, America is probably the greater of the two evils. - DerProfi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@SquidFu "Please ... Somebody on Digg start a petition for the Bush Administration to resign. "
If it gets your Huggies in such a wad, SquidFu, then why don't YOU do it? - AeonTorpor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You know, I remember very distinctly getting buried for saying that Iraq IS the modern day Vietnam. This was a few months ago... my-oh-my how we love to see only what agrees w/ our current point of view.
- quakerorts, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1She looks like she'd like to rip off someone's testicles. They should put her picture next to "Evil Bitch" in the dictionary.
- petra51, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3This discussion certainly has brought out the cowards....the people who are too afraid to die, to know how to live! America has a long history of starting wars and then not finishing them! Korea, Vietnam and now it appears....Iraq! We are "known" by our enemies as a "paper tiger" and after reading the comments in here.....I can certainly see why. There are things worse than death, like living in a country of cowards ( but I digress). Patrick Henry said, "give me liberty or give me death". Democrats and even some Republicans would have to change his comment to give me liberty or lets talk about it at least before you take it from us.
Our enemies are ruthless, sadistic murderers and leaving Iraq will not change that. Men who are against this war make me sick for they only show their cowardice every time they open their mouths. America will become a third world country and very soon. It is filled with cowards and socially immoral people....we have become the old Roman Empire in it's death throws. Our greed, our debt and our Cowardly selves have spelled our downfall !! Good night, America your run of strength is over as you have become overtaken by greed, cowardice, immorally and a land of leaders filled with themselves and their importance! - bigcatt, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Hagel is boob and a rino. He is running for president - thats why he is anti war.
- dkm201, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I suggest you make use of a block list. The fact is, it's the same 10 morons who make ALL the stupid comments in the Politics articles. The same goes for the Apple articles (although they're not the same 10 morons). If you start blocking the retards Digg quickly becomes a lot more pleasant.
- arcangelgabriel, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Rino...?
When does common sense deserve condemnation? That was a clear, concise and well worded speech. I for one support him. 'True' republicans must be the ones blathering on about insurgents, except in El Salvador we called them Freedom Fighters. Pick a euphemism.
I'm on the side for bringing our troops home, they're not defending America, they're holding a line against internal hatred that was born a long time before America was a thought and a foreign policy that is inept and sloppy at best and a disgrace at worst.
America has always sucked at nation building. It's time we got out of the business.
Been there, done that. - Ark7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1More thinkprogress spam.
- revisrev, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3"Our enemies are ruthless, sadistic murderers and leaving Iraq will not change that."
Newsflash: Staying in Iraq isn't going to change this either.
At least if we get out we'd be taking care of ourselves, at this point we're not taking care of anyone, and we're apparently trying to escalate ***** with Iran while we still have a chance. Go watch Fox News or read a Left Behind book or something, if you've finished those I hear that Babylon Rising is overflowing with neocon goodness.
And um, It's not cowardice, it's logic. Freedom and supporting a freedom hating ruler and his agendas are not the same thing. Iraq has absolutely nothing to do with Patrick Henry.
Can't resist:
The liberties of a people never were, nor ever will be, secure, when the transactions of their rulers may be concealed from them.
-Patrick Henry
(what do you think he would think of the way Bush handles business?) - Haas89, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1All you can really say is "DUH!!!!!"
- themonkman, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3@revisrev
"No *****, the conservative agenda is small government and a strong national defense (as in not offense)."
Your kidding, right? The amount of porkbarrell baspending and government spending (excluding security and war related stuff), has ballooned more than any previous administration. You cannot call the Republicans fiscally responsible anymore. If their goal was to create a smaller government, then how the heck did we suddenly find ourselves with the largest deficit in history? Our income taxes currently only cover the interest payments on the money we have borrowed from the Federal Reserve. I doubt that will change anytime soon without deep cuts or higher taxes. To the 109th Congress: thanks for nothing. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"It's a shame that our primary system doesn't allow a moderate to when the party's nomination."
That's why we need to get rid of all money in politics. Reform the FEC to allow any candidate with 50,000 petition signatures to be on any ticket he/she wishes and give all candidates equal screen time. Then Hagel would have a chance at the Presidency.
Can you imagine the debates?!?!?! WOO! - revisrev, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1No *****, the conservative agenda is small government and a strong national defense (as in not offense). Don't say that a conservative is leaning leftward cause he's acting like a conservative. Worrying about everyone else and not taking care of number one is more of a leftward lean in my book. He's saying "screw those guys killing each other, they can take care of themselves."
- mathchemist, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2The look on Rice's face at the end of that is priceless.
- bigturns, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Politics baby - do you think a single Repugnation would stand by W at this hour? W = Titanic's larger, and lesser known brother, *****!
- entro, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Chuck's always been one of the more colorful republicans that got me interested in the whole concept of Bipartisanship. There are certainly way less left leaning people out there in the party... but I like the idea of people who agree to disagree and have solid opinions... rather than being yes men. He and Biden as crazy as they seem have always felt really earnest in terms of expressing dissent...
In the end if Hagel leaves politics... it'll be a sad day (READ: for people like myself who aren't expressedly democratic all the time or republican but american first and foremost)... but could you really blame him in this climate... its not even about america anymore. - eric0213, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1It's a shame that our primary system doesn't allow a moderate to when the party's nomination.
- dagnome1984, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1@ reviserv
You hit the nail on the head as to what a real conservative is, but this guy Hagel is far from conservative. Take a close look at his voting record. He voted time after time for the neoconservative agenda. He may speak like a conservative in the video, but his actions suggest otherwise.
http://www.vote-smart.org/voting_category.php?can_id=BC031069 - tidu, on 10/12/2007, -5/+5Man, It's like the first name Chuck automatically grants the child a second set of balls or something... Hagel must be following in Norris' footsteps.
- gradient01, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2@antifederalist
Why is Hegel resonable? Because he agrees with you?
@eric
Well said, it's a shame indeed. It actually, I think, hurts the Democrats more. But, since I'm a Republican, I think it's reasonable... sorry, couldn't resist.
@themonkeyman
Yep, you hit the nail on the head. The Republicans went to power and did absolutely the exact OPPOSITE (domestically) of what they said they were going to do. Corruption, cronyism, pork ... There's a part of me that's glad they got thrown out on their asses, but unfortunately, the Rep's and Dem's seem have these things in common. - drlha, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Remember there are only two sides to politics in America. Those who support Bush in everything he does and terrorists.
- mojoxrisen, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2The only way the current situation will turn into a "Vietnam" is if we tuck our tales between our legs and run. Just as we did in Vietnam. A lose in Iraq and a retreat at that is a very bad idea. I'm not sure what the best solution to the problem would be but I sure haven't heard any ideas from the dems besides cut'n and runnin. Surely there is a better solution to the problem.
- revisrev, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Yes, we are in a great big mess. Cutting and running won't work, staying the course won't work. What we have is a real ***** situation. Thing is, nobody has a plan, and in the absence of any real strategy that will work out in a good way, our only good option is to get the hell out. It's a civil war. Muslim sects have been fighting each other for centuries, they're not going to stop because the united states comes in and spanks them and tells them to stop. It will take years of free speech, press, and religion before these people can work themselves out of the mindset that their narrow-minded interpretations of the qu'ran are the only truth and that it's worth dying and killing by the thousands for. That is not something that we can really give them at this point. It is not a battle that we can win.
Christianity had its revolution and for the most part (exclude the neocons) the people who worship jesus in different ways have finally managed to get along with each other and most everyone else. This civil war is part of a natural progression that we would be fools to stand in the way of, they're going to kill each other whether we are there or not. We may even be adding fuel to the fire. Let's bring our boys home, and if we want we can pray for the Iraqi's, or send them money, or support them in some other way, but the military method isn't showing any signs of improving things for them or us. - shootdashit, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1How about the look on Rice's face?! Priceless.
- drlha, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Read the ***** headline. "This Country", meaning the USA.
- petra51, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I appreciate your comment on the block user....but my comment still stands. There are way too many cowards running and living in America for it to stand. And Mr. Hegel is living proof. We can't attack our enemies if they cross the wrong border, ie., Syria or Iran....Nonsense and stupid thinking! We should attack these terrorists wherever they go and we should not try to avoid collateral damage in the process. Hit em hard and often should be our motto! It is the only thing these people understand....Brut force!!
- anengineer, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2wrong spot, bury me
- gabeN, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1C'mon man... we're America, dude... we can do anything if we just believe... The reason Iraq is all ***** up and ***** is because nobody believed in it. I blame all of us, all of the nay-sayers who assumed any unilateral action based on fictitious evidence wouldn't, couldn't succeed! People were already calling it Vietnam 2.0 (beta) before we even invaded... What did you expect to happen??? It's like we're the fighter who, on the day of a bout says to himself, "there's no way I'm going to win." One man believes he can win, another believes he cannot, they are both right. America decided this would happen 5 years ago, when it decided to support our troops, and not our President!
