- tasine, on 08/08/2008, -6/+23This is blackmail, pure and simple, so why is it so cheerily reported in the newspaper? Not only do they say they will expose them, they say they may be followed by investigators, may incur legal expenses, etc. Threats just like I'm sure the Cosa Nostra made. Is blackmail not blackmail when it is out in the open? Alice, where are you? Are you with the Mad Hatter? Alice?
- rpfinley, on 08/08/2008, -2/+17Is the new message of the left to allow free speech only when it agrees with their views.
- Sethery, on 08/08/2008, -0/+14How in the hell is this an "outside political group", as cited in the 2nd paragraph, when it's led by Tom Matzzie, described in the 3rd paragraph as "a liberal political operative"???
NYT flashes its left boob again. - Maninthemiddle, on 08/08/2008, -2/+13As a maninthemiddle, I stand - as I have for years - with moderate world view.
My view, however, is seeing the far left disappear over the port horizon.
The attempt to silence thought, publication, and speech (and donations are clearly a form of political speech) has truly attained a totalitarian bent.
When they fear they might not fare well in an honest debate, they attempt to stifle the debate rather than reconsider the failings within their own argument.
Now - I have a nice long naughty list for the Republicans over the last decade as well. But the attempt by the far left - via universities, media, and political debate - to create a monolithic mind thought is truly something to be feared and countered. - BohicaTwentyTwo, on 08/08/2008, -5/+16Naomi Wolfe's Fascist America in 10 Easy Steps:

7. Target key individuals

2. Create a gulag
4. Set up an internal surveillance system
6. Engage in arbitrary detention and release
10. Suspend the rule of law - vexingmodstwo, on 08/09/2008, -1/+9This is why I laugh whenever a leftist calls anyone a fascist.
- mattletron, on 08/09/2008, -0/+7Count me among the liberals who feel this is a terribly unethical thing to do. This is no better than the voter intimidation against minorities. Everyone should have the right to be able to act politically without the fear of retaliation.
Why do we need to resort to nastiness? Isn't the goal to arrive at a fair and democratic government, and not just be on the winning side (Republican vs. Democrat)? I certainly don't want this kind of political advantage, even if it somehow benefited the candidate I will vote for. This kind of behavior just drives a wedge between two camps of political thought that already have a hard time working together to effectively govern our country.
I would much rather win or lose an honest and fair election, than one that is arrived at by coercion and intimidation. Damn it, I and a lot of others want a government that is a result of differing opinions working toward consensus as much as possible with compromises on both sides. I don't want our government reduced to what amounts to two football teams at a sporting event.
I am very disappointed in these, my fellow Americans. - makenshin, on 08/08/2008, -3/+10I have to agree, if true, this is un-American. I hate the GOP as much as the next person, but this is just wrong. There are some limits that should always be adhered to, and the respect of citizens liberty and privacy is a line that should not be crossed (even by other citizens).
- rthakidn, on 08/09/2008, -0/+6Yes
- rthakidn, on 08/09/2008, -1/+4I would only add that George Soros be added to the list. Certainly not a GOP contributor, but as guilty as anyone for malicious false attacks (Gerneral Betray Us type adds). @Crying; transparency? The left is more opaque than the KGB!
- LyingLiberals, on 09/19/2008, -1/+0I agree that both should have to openly show who they are... but liberals are liars; they want anyone who will not bow to their beliefs to be shut down. They do not believe in equal rights for detractors. You will most certainly see this fascist bent grow.
- cersad, on 08/09/2008, -4/+2Wait, how is this a suppression of free speech? There's absolutely NOTHING stopping these GOP donors from continuing to create their own independent ads against Barack Obama, even if their identities are known. All that's happening is that these donors' anonymity is being threatened. Now, if I post something on the internet or look at the wrong web site or download something illegally, my IP address is automatically recorded and can be traced to the physical location that my computer is getting its internet from. Why should wealthy donors who disseminate advertisements to a very broad base have a better expectation of anonymity than I do from making this post?
Don't get me wrong, I don't like the idea of internet tracking, pulling up Google searches, etc. but the public election system needs to be TRANSPARENT. Both Democratic and Republican advertisements really need to have their money trails openly visible to the public; a closed an inaccessible government leads to a government that can act against the interests of its citizens that much easier.
In summary, this group needs to be threatening the liberal advertisers too. - wynja, on 08/08/2008, -8/+2mmmm, 2) the gulag is Blackwater. 4) surveillance is everywhere. 6)we already engage in a secret rendition program. 10) coming to a New Orleans near you.
- inactive, on 08/08/2008, -13/+5So being honest about what you support is blackmail?
Or having someone else out you for supporting failure?
That's pathetic.
Hey, how about McCain supporters have the integrity to be honest about what they support?
Oh, right, it's ridiculous to ask honesty from Republicans.
LOL
These comments are amazing.
It's just a bunch of unethical bitches crying about how they can't hide their political affiliations.
WHY should they be allowed to finance lies behind the cover of anonymity?
I'm not embarrassed by ANYTHING I have supported or given money to.
But that's the difference between me and the rigth wing: I value honor and integrity.
Yeah, rightard losers, keep crying because you have to be accountable for your actions.
It's called transparancy, and it's something the GOP has fought for years and years.
WHY? Because their donors don't want people to know they actually support these failures.
I think it's a GREAT idea. It forces honesty out of Republicans, which won't happen otherwise.
