Grandma, grandpa get owned by Illinois' failed gaming law
arstechnica.com — When Illinois' ill-fated, politically-opportunistic gaming law was tossed as unconstitutional, the dirty truth came out: the state raided Public Health funds to pay for the defense, and was now having trouble making ends meet. In a sad twist, nursing homes are feeling the pinch. One auditor demands answers.

- Gir53457, on 03/27/2008, -0/+2This is why I'm ***** off at anti-gaming legislation, I'm 19 so I could hardly care less if they restricted mature games. But I know that they're going to get shot down and when my grandmother has to suffer the costs for an idiot's vendetta to appeal to soccer moms...

- siszam, on 03/27/2008, -11/+30Illinois also did unconstitutional gun grabs (http://www.prisonplanet.com/articles/september2004 ... and wants you to go through a criminal background check and provide references to exercise free speech (http://www.chicagobusiness.com/cgi-bin/news.pl?rss ... It's alarming how out of control fascist that state is. We may be moving there in a year or so and it has me concerned. Sounds like that states politicians are out of control and corrupt to the core.
- jmpeagle, on 03/27/2008, -7/+17prisonplanet? seriously?
- CryRightardCry, on 03/27/2008, -1/+5It's funny when people who think LGF is news pretend that some other source is unreliable.
That's like a skunk saying something stinks.

- crichton101, on 03/27/2008, -0/+12Well I live in Illinois and its not quite there yet... depending on where you live, Chicago is a different bird, but the Gov. we got is a pretty corrupt bastard for what its worth. He's wanted to change the capitol of the state to Chicago for several years, infact he bases his operations out of Chicago and tends to refuse to travel to Springfield, making all the gov. representatives spend tax payer money to come up and see him.
- Gir53457, on 03/27/2008, -2/+1Chicago ***** sucks. Why would he want to do that?
- steveg944, on 03/28/2008, -0/+1Chicago has been a very nice place to live. Unfortunately, the politicians here are more corrupt than Blagojevich. That may be hard to believe if you do not live here, but it is true.
- Gir53457, on 03/27/2008, -2/+1Chicago ***** sucks. Why would he want to do that?
- DarkShroud, on 03/27/2008, -0/+6I live in the Northwest suburbs of Chicago. I can say clearly this state is going to hell. Everyone is tight on cash yet my township has just built a brand new police station. They ticket us if we park over the sidewalk from 7am to 9pm or dusk. And thanks to takes currently in effect, not counting the others they're trying to pass we have some of the highest fuel prices in the country. They charge the hell out of us for natural gas as well.
- DerangedPenguin, on 03/27/2008, -4/+2I find the story some what humorous... ha ha old people and those who will be old you voted for these idiots more often more than once.
- Olfster, on 03/27/2008, -0/+2Illinois is heading for a serious crisis. I am counting the days until I get to bail on this state. I know allot of people that are leaving or going to be leaving the state. I am even contemplating heading north, over the border, myself. At least up north, in Wisconsin, the only people leaving that state are the criminals, convicted or not, that can no longer get work due to on-line public records. The only people coming to Illinois are the criminals. Most, if they are smart, will leave Illinois before the crud hits the fan. Chicago will soon become what Detroit has become. Sad for the rest of the state that has nothing to do with that nasty city and its crooked occupants.
- jmpeagle, on 03/27/2008, -7/+17prisonplanet? seriously?
- smacksaw, on 03/27/2008, -3/+36Just like corporate raiders, our current mortgage crisis, etc - someone out there got re-elected for this and thus doesn't give a ***** who it hurts. Nothing like hating videogames to get a few votes.
The other thing that strikes me is how prohibition of things is often costly. The obvious example is the War on Drugs. If they didn't bother with video games...well, the nursing homes would have $500,000 more. But as usual, a politician gets elected on rhetoric and a lawyer gets rich off of political granstanding while the taxpayer gets the runaround.
And here's where the comment gets buried: You all laughed at those of us supporting Paul, Kucinich and Gravel. This is why. This ***** adds up. - herecomes, on 03/27/2008, -2/+1I guess they need to hold a lottery to pay for Public Health.
- r36283, on 03/27/2008, -2/+0Good idea - except that than our schools would go under.
- Gir53457, on 03/27/2008, -0/+2Oh *****. Not a single ***** penny has been given to our schools from the California lotto.
- Yez70, on 03/27/2008, -2/+4Health care is already a lottery. We buy the tickets. and unfortunately only the corporations get to win.
- Scheissen, on 03/28/2008, -1/+1You've been libtarded!

- martalli, on 03/27/2008, -0/+19Blagoevich is a horse's ass. He's deeply unpopular here in Illinois. His misguided "leadership" of the state has him at loggerheads with the legislature, even though both houses are held by his same party. Unless he gets indicted for corruption, we will have to wait another three years to be rid of him.
- crichton101, on 03/27/2008, -0/+5we can only hope they find something to get on corruption soon.
- chanop, on 03/27/2008, -0/+9So unpopular that he keeps getting re-elected, we have that problem with Hillary in NY
- fumar, on 03/27/2008, -4/+1I remember seeing him booed by everyone at wrigley field last season when he threw the first pitch. Then again drunken cub fans aren't exactly the best way to gauge someone's popularity.
- bulkhater, on 03/27/2008, -1/+3What, no Recall vote like in California?
- Gir53457, on 03/27/2008, -0/+2No, that's only if your state suffers from problems out of his control. Generator blows up? Replace him with a movie star!
- snotrokit, on 03/27/2008, -0/+3There is a motion to ammend the Illinois constitution going up this year, which will allow for a recall. Being pushed very hard by downstate Republicans, and quietly backed by pretty much everyone that he has ***** off, which would be pretty much everyone. MY guess is that Pat Quinn will be the Governor by this time next year. There is way too much stuff on this guy for none of it to stick.
- chris9902, on 03/27/2008, -2/+26GTA kills old people. confirmed.
- NaziHatinChimp, on 03/27/2008, -1/+14Example Number 507 of how moral elitism is killing this country.
- Diderotten, on 03/27/2008, -10/+3Trying to outlaw something you think is wrong is moral elitism? Just what does that mean? Is thinking you're right by doing something you think is good 'elitist'? Everybody always looks at circumstance instead of intention. It just doesn't apply to this. however. That goes for all these stupid atheist v Christianity threads on digg. Please at least pay respect for the person based on what you think their intention is. If you want to talk about elitism, get on the post about a little girl who died because her parents prayed instead of got help. The first post goes "WHERE IS YOUR GOD NOW?" and it got +926 diggs. ***** ridiculous. Less of half of this reply has been focused on your comment. I've hijacked this post for too long. /atheist
/rant over- sugarazor, on 03/27/2008, -0/+17In this instance, it is moral elitism. This is a case of lawmakers trying to make a law that only applies to video games and not any other form of media - not movies, DVDs, books, etc. They're trying to put M-Rated video games on the same level with pornography when there hasn't been a single thing in an M-Rated game that you can't find in an R-Rated movie, and those are usually much worse. These laws come from people who don't know anything about video games and want to legislate your taste because someone needs to protect the children.
Generally, when someone tells me my hobby is equal to pornography, I generally consider that moral elitism.- Nougat, on 03/27/2008, -0/+8My hobby *is* pornography, and it's still moral elitism.
- bulkhater, on 03/27/2008, -0/+1Trekky Monster, is that you??
- bulkhater, on 03/27/2008, -0/+3That's a nice straw man argument there. Equating the people who want video games legislated like movies to folks who call out "Where is your God now" when a child dies was clever. It wasn't as far as a stretch as most the other ranting loonies (Atheist, Christian whatever) on Digg and as a result looked downright sensible to many.
Well played. Very well played.

- Sraza, on 03/27/2008, -0/+4I get a sickening feeling after reading stories like that and it's sad it could become literal for the elderly in Illinois.
- oldhick, on 03/27/2008, -0/+7This is disgusting. Legislation like this happens in every state and too often we never hear about it and the public gets misled. Shame on these assholes.
- nblsavage, on 03/27/2008, -12/+2But, but I thought the Diggers were all for "states rights" You know, if you don't like how a state handles things you can just move to another one. Right Paulites?
- Diderotten, on 03/27/2008, -0/+9I am a libertarian. I am for state rights, but it doesn't apply to anything Federal would disapprove. Remember free speech? A vague art form like this doesn't need to be censored. Free speech has been streched a little, but willingly to apply to art. Nobody wants to see the Venus de Milos with a bra on.
- jamesLankford, on 03/27/2008, -7/+0idiot
- nekochan, on 03/27/2008, -0/+11another fine example of meaningful debate.
- bulkhater, on 03/27/2008, -0/+4You've completely missed the point of State Rights.
State Rights means the Federal Government doesn't intervene where i's not constitutionally allowed to. The twisted, diseased notion you've cooked up is more along the lines of letting the states do whatever they want regardless of it's legal or right. You're wrongfully and blindly equating a lack of Federal control with freedom from the Constitution. State Rights movements do not want to exempt the states from the Constitution, as you seem to think.
- casuallyevil, on 03/27/2008, -0/+7Every political deal in Illinois happens the same way - the Chicago Tribune basically has space reserved on the front page for whatever the previous day's corruption news will be.
- bulkhater, on 03/27/2008, -0/+3I used to do business with the Chicago Tribune, working with their editors. You're not joking. They have special internal categories to flag the daily corruption stories.
- bobbytuck, on 03/27/2008, -0/+2Um, well. If you used to business with the Trib (and presumably lived in Illinois) then you know that Illinois suffers from a steady stream of corruption.
Why in the world *wouldn't* the Trib devote a front page to all the crap that's going on in Illinois?
Wait -- is that you Rod Blagojevich?- bulkhater, on 03/27/2008, -0/+2I think we're in agreement here. The Trib has a separate editorial staff for dealing with the corruption issues because they NEED it. I was just pointing out that what casuallyevil thought was a joke was in fact reality.
- bobbytuck, on 03/27/2008, -0/+2Um, well. If you used to business with the Trib (and presumably lived in Illinois) then you know that Illinois suffers from a steady stream of corruption.

- rpfinley, on 03/27/2008, -0/+5The best way to revive newspapers in Chicago and the United States would be to actually follow these stories and write more about them, a term called investigative journalism maybe that would make them profitable again. The amount of tax payer money that is wasted is ridiculous.
- MasterJeweler, on 03/27/2008, -1/+3politically opportunistic gaming laws that disenfranchise the elderly just ain't what they used to be.

- bulkhater, on 03/27/2008, -0/+4Were you trying to make sense or just posting whatever random nonsense floated into your skull?
- anillop, on 03/27/2008, -0/+4wtf does that even mean?
- bulkhater, on 03/27/2008, -0/+4I think it means prleet has severe cognitive issues or is JUST starting to study English.
- Larlei, on 03/27/2008, -1/+2It is very unconstitutional to deny us our right to kill monsters, Germans, Russians, or anyone who wants to shank you ; within our own home.
- Quick2822, on 03/27/2008, -3/+2On a side note.. hopefully Illinois will become the 13th state to legalize medical marijuana. It's up for a vote.
- frogman54, on 03/27/2008, -2/+3"Suck it grampa. Were taking the tennis balls off your walker cuz them grandkids of yours were screwing hookers and then killing them to get their money back."
"Billy did that? Really? Oh dear." - jetblackz4, on 03/27/2008, -0/+5What crooks, Chicago will soon hold the title of highest tax in the nation.
10.75 % I believe- steveg944, on 03/28/2008, -0/+2You're blowing it way out of proportion. Chicago will only be screwing the residents with a 10.25% tax. I guess 10.75% could happen soon though.
- DerangedPenguin, on 03/27/2008, -0/+2This shouldn't be forced upon the tax payers, those who proposed this ridicules law should be made to pay for it out of their state incomes. I doubt that the Illinois legislators are volunteers, most likely the draw a sizable annual income compared to the average working class stiff.
- Chordinator, on 03/27/2008, -0/+3Come on feel the ILLINOIS!
- Olfster, on 03/27/2008, -0/+1I feel it. My face is turning blue.
- Vigilante, on 03/27/2008, -0/+2Dugg for Sufjan Stevens!
- anillop, on 03/27/2008, -0/+4Man can Blagojevich screw up this state any more. That guy to totally incompetent and seems determined to run the state into the ground. Too bad the Republican party is even more incompetent and doesn't have the power to keep him in check.
- bobbytuck, on 03/27/2008, -0/+2I agree. The only way Blagojevich *won't* win a third term is if he's indicted.
Granted, it's getting closer. But he seems lucky that way. Everyone around him will go down, but he'll stay standing.
- bobbytuck, on 03/27/2008, -0/+2I agree. The only way Blagojevich *won't* win a third term is if he's indicted.

I wonder why that is?
