Govt: 1 in 300 US Residents Are Terrorists
aclu.org — The figures are extrapolated from a September 2007 report by the Inspector General of the Department of Justice, which reported that the Terrorist Screening Center had over 700,000 names in its database as of April 2007, and that the list was growing by an average of over 20,000 records per month.

Whiteguy ebonics is a bigger threat to our quality of life than al queda IMO. - ThndrShk2k, on 03/14/2008, -0/+2All it takes for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing
Resisting an oppressor is not being evil. Being violent is not being evil. Being evil is unjust hate, unjust action. To think of an entity with malice in vain is nothing short of sinful.
Being just in your opinions and trying to resolve situations first by peaceful means is just, if it may come to it, resorting to action against such an entity as a last resort is also a just thing to do. To offer yourself to the den of lions with no plan of action, nor no significance (Internet, many people in the world. You are not popular enough to be known.)
Also, using U and R is lame. As well as preaching that kind of ***** you are. You either lead, follow, or get out of the way. Currently you're choosing the third option.

- slowmo, on 03/14/2008, -3/+37tHE U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) defined terrorism as: “The calculated use of unlawful violence or threat of unlawful violence to inculcate fear; intended to coerce or to intimidate governments or societies in the pursuit of goals that are generally political, religious, or ideological.”

*whispers* "inside job" - wiretapped, on 03/14/2008, -1/+4The more people who pretend to be terrorists the more resources are drained away for monitoring the real terrorists.
Maybe the 20,000 folks a month added to the records are decoy's to use up NSA database space, so they need to keep buying more servers to store pretend terrorists on.
In the mean time the real terrorists fly under the radar, while the decoy's keep NSA search bots busy at another side of the internet.
all the best,
wiretapped- smurfsahoy, on 03/14/2008, -0/+2The NSA has developed new robots that are especially quick at navigating the internet's system of tubes. This strategy will fail!

- Tomboys, on 03/14/2008, -1/+132The sad thing is that just by making a jke like that they will probably add you to the list.
- Skitzzo, on 03/14/2008, -13/+53It's an interesting article although the title of the submission is slightly misleading. 1 in 300 are on the terrorist watch list and that's assuming the numbers continued to grow at the same rate as they were last year. I think the bigger point to be made here is how horribly bloated this list is, making it ineffective, not that the government somehow considers 1 in 300 residents to be terrorists.
- KSUdesigner, on 03/14/2008, -4/+9The article also does not state that the names in this database are necessarily residents of the United States, and I'd venture to guess that many of them are not.
- kolobcreek, on 03/14/2008, -2/+7I would venture to say the majority of them are not. The article makes no reference to the watch list being only US Citizens. That a pretty big assumption that the poster makes. If I was going to make an assumption about this I would say that poster's personal biases cloud his judgment.
- Chassit, on 03/14/2008, -0/+1I felt that the article implied that many people on the list were not US citizens.
- byrdgang, on 03/14/2008, -7/+3Why would you be on the terrorist watch list if you are not, according to the government, a terrorist? The Digg title is largely accurate with the exception of the residents part. Saddam Hussein, as far as I know, was never a US resident.
- KSUdesigner, on 03/14/2008, -0/+6"1 in 300" is directly tied to these people being residents of the U.S., therefore the only accurate part of the title is: "Govt: Are Terrorists." Yep, sounds accurate to me.
- Mardala, on 03/14/2008, -0/+7Randi Rhodes is the terrorist watch list. Senator Ted Kennedy was notified he is on the terrorist watch list. If you are outspoken publicy, or involved with any group in any way, like PETA or Earth First you will be on the terror watch list. So yes its probably not that hard to get on the terrorist watch list.
- MacEnvy, on 03/14/2008, -0/+4To be fair, there actually are terrorists in Earth First. Eco-terrorists, but still. They spike trees (which ends up severely injuring loggers), destroy public and private infrastructure, etc, to push a political message.
PETA aren't really terrorists though, they're just annoying.
- MacEnvy, on 03/14/2008, -0/+4To be fair, there actually are terrorists in Earth First. Eco-terrorists, but still. They spike trees (which ends up severely injuring loggers), destroy public and private infrastructure, etc, to push a political message.
- OldGuyFox, on 03/14/2008, -2/+8Are you going to make excuses and defend the government's actions all the way to the gas chamber?
- Picaroon, on 03/14/2008, -9/+1Are you going to be paranoid all the way to the (early) grave?
- dusanmal, on 03/14/2008, -6/+1Also there are problems with their "wrongly accused" list... Some of the cases are lesser known, but I'll underline the popular
Cat Stevens/Yusuf Islam. Everyone immediately assumes wrong accusation of the apparently mild-mannered singer:
"Yusuf Islam, a singer and pop star formerly known as Cat Stevens. Author of song "Peace Train." His flight from London was diverted and forced to land in Maine once the government realized he was aboard, and he was barred from entering United States."
However, at the time when this incident happened not only that the Govt. explained what he did (buried by the left-loving press on page 300+),
but I listened to him personally replying to the charge on the radio interview. In his own words, he donated a large sum of money to the Hamas.
(I forgot the exact number but to the best of my memory it was 1 or 3 million dollars!). He said that he considers Hamas
to be a humanitarian organization. Well, for my own safety I want people who pour millions to the Hamas and similar
organizations and who think those are humanitarian organizations to be labeled as terror-suspects and not let into any civilized country.
So thumbs up for the Govt. not falling for mild-mannered-singer-terror-financier celebrity and kicking him out.- kilcock, on 03/14/2008, -0/+3The original refusal of Yusuf Islam originally known as Cat Stevens before his conversion to Islam into the United States was later categorized as an unfortunate incident as a direct result of the name being confused with the name "Youssef Islam". He was allowed into the States twice in 2006 without further incident.
These errors are typical of the fumbling bureacracy and ineptitude in the creation, management and subsequent maintenance of this terrorist list very similar to the fly watch list which is based on first and last name only. - ShadowMerchant, on 03/14/2008, -3/+1I'll go you one better, and say that I want my government to hunt down anyone who donates money to Hamas, and hang their intestines from a fence post without benefit of trial.
- kilcock, on 03/14/2008, -0/+3The original refusal of Yusuf Islam originally known as Cat Stevens before his conversion to Islam into the United States was later categorized as an unfortunate incident as a direct result of the name being confused with the name "Youssef Islam". He was allowed into the States twice in 2006 without further incident.
- Pritchard, on 03/14/2008, -0/+6A large size does NOT make the list ineffective. There have been plans and in fact, executed plans, all throughout history to simply round up everyone on these lists. You don't have to act through the Federal Government. You can act through local police working with someone higher up. It only takes a few weeks or days (depending on where you live) to round up hundreds of thousands of people.
It can happen, and it's been planned before, even in the USA:
"Hoover maintained a list of 12,000 Americans suspected of disloyalty with the intention of detaining them and to do so by suspending the writ of habeas corpus. Hoover submitted his plan to President Harry Truman at the outbreak of the Korean War, but there is no evidence that Truman accepted the plan."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/J._Edgar_Hoover - robthom, on 03/14/2008, -0/+2I'll bet most of the people on the list are taxpayers. Thats how they track you, through your SS# and electronic/paper trail.

Robert Johnson - 60 Minutes interviewed 12 men named Robert Johnson, all of whom reported being pulled aside and interrogated, sometimes for hours, nearly every time they go to the airport.
James Moore, author of a book critical of the Bush Administration, Bush's Brain ; problems flying.
John William Anderson, age 6; problems flying.
Alexandra Hay, a college student with a double major in French and English at Middlebury College in Vermont in 2004, when she joined an ACLU lawsuit due to problems she was having with the airline watch list.
Evo Morales, president of Bolivia. Name found on list obtained by 60 Minutes .
Gary Smith. Another name that is extremely common in the United States, found on the no-fly list by 60 Minutes.
John Williams. Yet another common name found on the airline watch list by 60 Minutes.
Marine Staff Sgt. Daniel Brown was blocked from flying while on his way home from an 8-month deployment in Iraq. He was listed as a suspected terrorist due to a previous incident in which gunpowder was detected on his boots, most likely a residue of a previous tour in Iraq.- gudnbluts, on 03/14/2008, -0/+5"John Williams. Where is Senator McCarthy when you need him?- userperson, on 03/14/2008, -0/+2They should exhume him.
- Hangly, on 03/14/2008, -0/+3The Senator is a terrorist and has no sense of decency.
- magellan1501, on 03/14/2008, -0/+0This is so stupid, I've been terrorizing children for the past four years and I have yet to be classified as a terrorist. Now the Gov't is accrediting 1 in 300 dumb asses with the title of Terrorist, while I have been working so hard to earn it. This is stupid, give credit where credit is due.
- nastronomical, on 03/14/2008, -10/+3Liberal inaccurate BS bury this bitch!!
- Srcc, on 03/14/2008, -1/+4The title is inaccurate, not the story. There are lots of non resident on the list. Use some basic reasoning before crying foul.
- Hangly, on 03/14/2008, -0/+3Ok. Bitch.
