FTA:
"Texas Gov. Rick Perry on Friday asked FEMA to issue an emergency declaration that would provide federal assets and resources for 199 threatened counties, and five of the hardest hit counties were authorized federal funding that pays for 75 percent of eligible firefighting costs." - Insightful, on 04/16/2009, -64/+506Lame duck governor with 35% approval rating signs a nonbiding resolution and makes a speech in front of a few hundred people = conservatives' wet dream coming true!
Their standards are not very high, aren't they? - AgeofMastery, on 04/16/2009, -56/+491Of course we'll need to build a fence to keep all the Texans from trying to illegally enter the US once they realize how screwed they are.
- Stormwern, on 04/16/2009, -16/+358What's really funny is that seceding would make texas a small, dusty, oil-rich country filled with religious fundamentalists, how's that for irony. :)
- ikilledkenny2, on 04/15/2009, -73/+410Please do but let us keep Austin.
- DavidTrom, on 04/16/2009, -64/+346What a great idea! Let them go and their 34 Republican Electoral Votes and their 2 Republican senators.
Since they are Federal dollar net recipients (they get more money than what they pay to the federal Gov) it would do nicely to the federal budget.
Also make sure that they take a part of the Federal debt proportional to their population. As for their Oil, don't worry about it, we buy Texas oil on the international market right now, we are not getting any special deals anyway, and who are they going to sell it anyway? Venezuela? Mexico? they both export.
About Austin, give people 6 month to re-locate to whatever side of the new border. We get all their academia and educated people and with some luck we get rid of a few Republicans who move there, who knows, maybe Bush moves there.
After that I hope the Mexican are patient enough while they learn Spanish and don't discriminate too much about their English accent.
Hell, we can even throw in OK(another Republican net recipient of Federal money) to sweeten the pot. - Echota, on 04/15/2009, -114/+331Make my day Gov. Perry................Secede! Please!
And take the lot of the tea baggers with you! - waluum, on 04/16/2009, -54/+265I am not a resident of Texas, but I back the right of Texas to assert its 10th Amendment rights, and if it should come to it that the Federal Government oversteps its Constitutional bounds then by the 2nd Amendment and the underlying principles of the Declaration of Independence I back the right of Texas to secede.
While I do not believe that they have good reason for the latter at this point, I will say, again, if it should come to it that the Federal Government oversteps its bounds, then I will, in the spirit of Liberty, and in defense of the Constitution, stand with Texas no matter the cost.
But please, do not confuse me with a radical Right-Wing extremist. I merely live up to the interests that our nation's founders sacrificed and suffered for, and that many revolutionaries before the establishment of our government fought and died for. My gun is not in my hand, and I do not speak with loose lips. But, again I say, should it ever come to it, the first of the two will be in reach and I will be quick to follow what I have stated.
I do not expect the time to come, and hope it will not have to. But if it should, I will answer the call. - samard2002, on 04/16/2009, -15/+176Davy Crockett said it better:
"You all may go to Hell and I will go to Texas." - mikeinto, on 04/16/2009, -104/+257We feel the same. Go to hell. Stay out of Texas.
- CarStan, on 04/16/2009, -43/+180Why does Texas hate america?
- woodsjransom, on 04/15/2009, -73/+201Looks like Texas will be getting a new Governor.
- visionaryIX, on 04/16/2009, -16/+141Ok, just read the article, isn't the title a little misleading?
"AUSTIN, Texas -- Texas Gov. Rick Perry fired up an anti-tax "tea party" Wednesday with his stance against the federal government and for states' rights as some in his U.S. flag-waving audience shouted, "Secede!""
Ok, so it wasn't him that said secede, it was some in his audience.
"An animated Perry told the crowd at Austin City Hall -- one of three tea parties he was attending across the state -- that officials in Washington have abandoned the country's founding principles of limited government. He said the federal government is strangling Americans with taxation, spending and debt."
So essentially he's just promoting limited government. Is that so awful?
And if we scroll down a bit, it says "he said he sees no reason why Texas should do that... We've got a great union. There's absolutely no reason to dissolve it"
Sensationalist and poor journalism IMO. - C0ntraRadical, on 04/16/2009, -12/+126How's that spelled? H-Y-P-O-C-R-I-T-E
- rick777, on 04/15/2009, -267/+372I'd rather go to Hell than Texas!!!!
- pgoetz, on 04/16/2009, -16/+116Note to digg: not all Texans are crazy fundamentalist right wing mother f*ckers (and the trend right now is that fewer and fewer fall into this category each year). On the other hand, with the scorpions, fire ants, giant cockroaches, blazing hot sun, etc., Texas is a pretty good approximation of hell -- and we like it this way. The right wing Christian bitches are mostly descendants of carpet bagging southern ***** fleeing the Union army from places like Georgia towards the end of the civil war. They don't really like it here, either, and native Texans could do without them mucking up our image, too. Finally, George W. Bush is not a Texan -- he's another yankee carpetbagger who just happens to live here and we can't do anything legally to make him GTFO.
- doubleo7, on 04/16/2009, -15/+115To borrow a line from the republicans :
"Protesting during a time of war?!? They should be ashamed of themselves!" - Rxtr, on 04/16/2009, -66/+162don't let the door hitcha
- gluck1tx, on 04/16/2009, -31/+115Rick Perry is a joke. This current tea party nonsense is the height of hypocrisy, where have these people been for the past 8 years? The garbage perry spewed forth today will help him become the former governor of Texas. It is unfortunate the state of Texas has a governor that only cares to cater to the corporations that got him elected.
- wrrock, on 04/16/2009, -12/+87Texas probably has the best chance at success. Here is how it can work. The annexation agreement made when Texas joined the union provided that Texas would be able to divide into 5 states. This would create 8 more conservative Senators.
If Texas were to try to divide and be rebuffed, the US would be in violation of the agreement and Texas should be able to go free.
It is not all that far fetched.
http://www.butasforme.com/2009/04/15/rising-star-r ... - whiteninjachild, on 04/16/2009, -11/+79WOW! I thought that we where all suppose to support each other and stand up for each other. Hate Texas , hate Texas, Everyone going on in this manner is basically ignorant, or sociologically challenged. you need to take your pitch forks and torches and stick them up your asses. I live in Texas, and i can say that right now, even a lot of the back woods hillbillies sound smarter than the bigotry trash spilling out of most of you. regardless of what you might think most people here are more tolerable then you give them credit for. Most that live in Texas would give the shirts off of their backs to help a person out.
P.s. Texas is the leading state of new military recruits. - inactive, on 04/16/2009, -18/+83Dear Texas,
You have my full support.
Don't let the door hit you in the ass on the way out! - zephc, on 04/16/2009, -9/+67Oh sure, now that Bush isn't ruling us anymore, the neocons get all up in arms about states rights. What happened to "yer either with us or aginn us" and all that other rhetoric?

Is that sufficient? I'm willing to backup each of these points if you'd like. - vagrantwade, on 04/16/2009, -30/+85They hate Federal restrictions but they love the Federal funding. Absolute hypocrites.
- bu4ik, on 04/16/2009, -7/+61Exactly whiteninja,
It's also one of the few states NOT running a budget deficit and asking for a handout from Uncle Sam. Because we have no state taxes and we're business friendly, our local economies aren't crumbling, job markets are still flourishing and the housing market is relatively stable.
Compare this to all the fiscally liberal "social" states and it becomes evidently clear - the stereotypes being perpetuated by the "progressives" in this thread are nothing more than close-minded, ignorant and misinformed delusional assertions.
Yea, it really sucks living in Texas. /s
P.S.
I'm a Libertarian - not a "right-wing nut job", "evangelical extremist", "cowboy" or "<insert stereotype here>" Texan. - donnytomas, on 04/16/2009, -17/+69R-E-P-U-B-L-I-C-A-N
- ThinkBox, on 04/16/2009, -57/+106Proud to be in TX
- RedPhalanx, on 04/16/2009, -2/+48Well the constitution doesn't say secession is illegal. And the 10th admendment basically says "If it ain't here, it isn't ours". We tend to forget that the bill of rights doesn't give us right, it AFFIRMS rights we already have. Being American doesn't magically give you the right to free speech; you already had it at birth and the 1st admendment just confirms and reminds you of it.
With all that being said the Federal goverment would never actually let a state seceed. Remember what happened last time? - yarcod, on 04/16/2009, -14/+60If they want to leave... let them.
If they then implement a legitimate low-government and low taxation system... I will be moving. So will others.
It may not be the majority of this country... but at least those who want to do it would have the ability. - basemodel, on 04/16/2009, -14/+59Go for it, us Texans would rather see you go to hell than come here.
- davebo27, on 04/16/2009, -14/+59FTA: "Perry suggested Texans might at some point get so fed up they would want to secede from the union, though he said he sees no reason why Texas should do that."
I had no idea Digg was so retarded
Second of all, everyone who used to be supporting Ron Paul should feel stupid if they made a comment here. You all say "let's cross political lines" yet conservatives run a rally for lower taxes, something Ron Paul was all about and Digg as a whole was almost entirely in support of it, and everyone flips out.
Did some conservatives go about it the wrong way? Yes of course, but i think the main message is something most of Digg would agree with if they would just think for a minute.
Third, everyone who says Texas is a recipient of Tax dollars is flat wrong:
http://www.taxfoundation.org/taxdata/show/22685.ht ...
That is all. - Yurikov, on 04/16/2009, -27/+70Wanna quit crying and GTFO our state if you dont like it douchebags.
I hate you sheepish idiots who hate Texas just because "its cool to hate on them hicks" - kuzotz, on 04/16/2009, -13/+51you do know that there are 4 major cities there in which most of the people aren't religious fundamentalists(that's within the cities though). Outside of the cities is another story. Small town Texas sucks.
- profgiles, on 04/16/2009, -32/+68Nothing to see here. Just mindless, soulless, gutless rhetoric.
- shadowspawn, on 04/16/2009, -11/+46Austin != Texas
- charm803, on 04/16/2009, -11/+45"You are either with us or against us."
Can you imagine what kind of disaster this would be in reality? I think Mexico would take over Texas.
Well, Texas, it's good to know that at a time when your country needs you the most, you are willing to talk about seceding.
As much as I disliked Bush, I never once said California should secede the rest of the country.
For better or for worse, I am AMERICAN!!! - tehpwnerofn00bs, on 04/16/2009, -36/+69As long as you promise to stay there yourself.
- DirtySanch, on 04/16/2009, -11/+43I don't think they hate America, I think they are just in love with themselves.
- Huckeye, on 04/16/2009, -64/+96I lived in Texas for six years on couldn't get out fast enough. Let them secede and immediately lose their largest employer -- the evil federal government. All of those military bases will have to move elsewhere. I used to marvel about how quickly then-Sen Phil Gramm would drop his anti-Pork Barrel rant whenever a Texas base went on the BRAC list.
- Foenetik, on 04/16/2009, -5/+36too bad the majority of people came in here just to mindlessly bash on texas.
- EdgarVerona, on 04/16/2009, -8/+38So where was everyone's outrage at the illegal domestic wiretapping? How about the acquisition of purchasing information without warrants? Or the unprecedented acquisition of executive branch powers?
Where was all that outrage then? Why are they angry *now*? I find that to be a rather convenient case of selective outrage. - Stormwern, on 04/16/2009, -8/+38Same thing with most middle eastern countires, higher educated people tend to be less radical as a rule.
- brutedog, on 04/16/2009, -4/+33Most people in Texas are friendly as hell. We are responsible with our budget, and we don't have a housing crisis, because people live within their means. Its a great place to live. I'm proud to be a Texan.
- BigVi, on 04/16/2009, -61/+90HAHA! Tricks on you! Texas is Hell.
- richmomz, on 04/16/2009, -1/+28I know Texas can't be in hell because I've actually visited Dayton, Ohio...
- EdgarVerona, on 04/16/2009, -6/+33Apparently you didn't read your own source... and neither did your source itself.
They paid $6,437 per capita in taxes in 2005 (the most recent year of their study), and received $6,514 per capita.
Either the column that they highlighted in yellow is incorrect based on the very data they provided... because the raw data there shows that they're spending more federal dollars than they're putting in. - minnecrapolis, on 04/16/2009, -2/+29It will definitely give their tourism motto more mean.
"Texas. It's like a whole other country."
I laugh everytime I see that on TV. - mickstephenson, on 04/16/2009, -4/+31I find it ironic that so many Americans always seem for the rights for to secede from every other Country other than their own. Example how may of you support the right for Northern Ireland to leave the UK, good so do I. How many of you realise that Northern Ireland has self determination and could legally do so if they had a referendum rule in support for leaving the UK? And for how many of you does that fact make no difference because Britain is an evil tyrannical power and Northern Ireland belongs to the Irish even if it is against the will of the population of NI?
And yet you won't give Texans the right to self determination, won't dare let them hold a referendum. You say they'd be screwed on their own? Well it seems like a big enough country to take care of itself to me.
What I think it really comes down to is that whenever someone wants to secede from a foreign country it's seen in America is a chance to make another country that little bit weaker, and therefore comparatively make America stronger, and the opposite is true when it is a US state wanting to secede, to the American psyche automatically jumps to support any other secession (eg Tibet) and to oppose any secessions from the US. - iuron, on 04/16/2009, -0/+25Protesting the Patriot Act???
YOU'RE UNAMERICAN!!! are you a terrorist?.
Where were they the last 8 years... -
