- chase001, on 10/10/2007, -2/+43Severe interrogations? Does Bush have someone in charge of synonyms? Severe interrogations=torture, preemptive war=invasion, etc etc
- vroom101, on 10/10/2007, -1/+27This important, very good article on one page: http://www.nytimes.com/2007/10/04/washington/04int ...
- senorcool, on 10/10/2007, -2/+24Yes. It's called a revolution and it needs to happen.
- izzybr, on 10/10/2007, -1/+20FTA: White House spokesman said “We have gone to great lengths, including statutory efforts and the recent executive order, to make it clear that the intelligence community and our practices fall within U.S. law..."
Translation: The magic 8-ball we use for all our decisions said it was ok. - natedouglas, on 10/10/2007, -0/+16It's interesting to look at the history of the various Islamic nationalist movements e.g. in Egypt, notice how often torture (far more extreme than this) was used, and what it ended up doing to those individuals who were tortured. It made their views even more extreme, and intensified their willingness to go to extreme measures to put in place policies that they saw as being right in order to counteract what they saw as liberal decadence.
In this case, as in many others, I think the moral high ground is the better strategy. The so-called Islamo-fascists have very limited support, even in their homelands, and by improving society and standing up for equality (even if it means positive [ie economic and diplomatic rather than military] foreign intervention) we can diminish that support even further. As Bush implied, terrorism will probably never go away. What we can do, through maintaining the moral high ground and genuinely promoting democracy and agitating in favor of human rights in dungeon wastelands like Saudi Arabia, is erode popular support for political extremism.
In other words, if a people's bellies are full and they see the US as a benefactor rather than an imperialist force, as we were largely viewed in the 1990's, we are less likely to suffer future terrorist attacks. Old ladies in Iraq screaming about how Allah will punish us for demolishing an entire village and killing children, and viewing the only viable avenue to justice to be the support of religious and political extremism, does not seem like a particularly wise foreign policy to me.
I'm all for foreign intervention, even using the military, so long as we are clearly and unquestionably acting in the interests of the people, of regional and global stability, and of fairness and justice. - scottknick, on 10/10/2007, -1/+17The Bush Administration knew the American people would be disgusted by this; that's why the opinion was issued in secret.
This administration has worked non-stop to turn America into the savage, degenerate, corrupt society Bin Laden always said we were. Question: Is George W. Bush an Al-Qaeda operative? - gummih, on 10/10/2007, -0/+15So you have the public face of the government saying "Torture is abhorrent and we don't do it"
And then the part of government that actually runs things says "Beating, freezing and half-drowning is OK"
WHAT - THE - *****?! - evilregis, on 10/10/2007, -1/+16Spoken from the safety of your comfy little room... how mighty bold and brave of you.
- crazyman, on 10/10/2007, -1/+15I'd say it's time to impeach him, but I just wanna get rid of the entire administration and then lock them up for the rest of their life.
- Protonz, on 10/10/2007, -0/+14Sounds like you are advocating terrorism. I'm calling Homeland Security on you, just to be safe.
- natedouglas, on 10/10/2007, -1/+15Unless I'm falling prey to urban legend, I think Jefferson was of the opinion that we needed a revolution every couple of decades. Now's as good a time as any, I guess.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -2/+15But if we say "torture" and "invasion," then the American people won't endorse it. ^___^
- MacEnvy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+12And no good intel either. People will say whatever you want them to, and that's completely useless. In the end it's just sadism.
- zyklon, on 10/10/2007, -1/+12Wait a minute... Gonzales doing something that ends up with horrible repercussions and where people get seriously hurt or die? Tell me it ain't true!
- Waiting2awake, on 10/10/2007, -1/+11What about for the people that allowed it to happen?
- SpamDog, on 10/10/2007, -1/+10This ***** MUST stop NOW.
We no longer (if we ever truly did) have the moral high ground when our government is actively allowing these types of actions. - MonGuSE1, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7Water boarding is designed to destroy the mind though the artificial stimulation of the production of chemicals in the brain that produce the fight or flight. It has long term mental, nervous and behavioral effects. Its immoral and illegal under international law and our own laws, just not while this administration is in the white house. The intelligence gathered is not reliable and is often just exactly what the interrogator wants to hear. Have you ever seen a coerced written confession? They sound good but once you examine them and start checking the claims out they break down 99% of the time and they just boil down to an assortment of artificial claims offered to satiate the interrogator so the pain will stop.
One last point physical side effects are often minor compared to the mental effects of torture. Once someone is tortured they will never be the same again. Your logic of no permanent physical side effects could be used to justify rape or child molestation which is one of the most heinous crimes in most people's opinions. - MonGuSE1, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6So your volunteering for them to test the techniques on you from the comfort of your mothers basement?
- breadbin, on 10/10/2007, -1/+71996 called, they want their joke back.
- Dundasbro, on 10/10/2007, -2/+8Die in a fire.
- Dundasbro, on 10/10/2007, -4/+10Die in a fire.
- vroom101, on 10/10/2007, -3/+8Question for diggers who are U.S. constitutional lawyers: Can We the People of the United States of America legally recall -- vote out of office -- the U.S. President and U.S. Vice-President without going though the U.S. House of Representative or the U.S. Senate?
- BigW, on 10/10/2007, -2/+7So elections are one year away and your proposing an overthrow of the government. Quick question: lets assume success, what kind of government will we have. You want a military coup? Communist/Socialist revolution? Since its a revolution what are you going to do if people (like me) stand against your efforts. Is it up against the wall for me and others like me?
Calling for revolution is *****!! It would be so vile and ugly as to make the war in Iraq look like its a Sunday picnic. This "torture" being purported in this story will be nothing in comparison to what revolutionaries like you would do to dissenters.
There's no way in hell you'll convince me that you and you revolutionary compatriots will come anywhere even close to setting up the great system that the founding fathers created.
Revolution would be awful and people like me would fight it as hard as we can. - pushmouse, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Most diggers realize that torture is immoral and information gleaned through torture is unreliable. You see, not torturing people used to be what made us better than them. You seem to have forgotten that or never realized it. You disgust me.
- gummih, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5get involved
- senorcool, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6Is the place for all the people who cant recall what they did and why they are there?
- Delphium226, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4http://www.goarmy.com/contact/how_to_join.jsp?hmre ...
off you go braveheart - dondara, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Not even close. Spammers have earned all the bad blood they get. There is nothing too evil to do to them. They are the scum of the earth. Only one click above lawyers (which of course, is as low as you can get).
- evilregis, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5I believe that he called for, specifically, one every generation?
- Acewrap, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4"Don't you liberals have anything CONSTRUCTIVE to do?" Yep. Defeat you.
- Batfishy, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5The Neocons don't live and let live. They HAVE to know what our uteruses and bedrooms are doing. If they don't take care of that, we will all be punished with more hurricanes.
- MWeather, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4" People crack almost instantly, with no permanent physical side effects."
You do know they've killed people like that, right? - MWeather, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Screw volunteering, let's just force him. He won't mind, it's for the good of the country.
- Caffeinate, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Death is a fairly permanent side effect.
- Delphium226, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3@flashdance,
By lowering yourself to their moral standards in pursuit of intel of questionable value, you're handing them victory. They can now say 'Look at how barbaric the west is!'. Why do you love the terrorists? - MonGuSE1, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3They administration has admitted that such things occur and most of it is documented through subpoenaed documents. Try reading the news some more, you ignorant Bushie.
- tomgost, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4classic: "We have gone to great lengths, including statutory efforts and the recent executive order, to make it clear that the intelligence community and our practices fall within U.S. law”
sounds good on the surface, but all that really says is. "Look here, see. We changed the law, see. It's not illegal any more, see. Go fly a kite, see."
just whatever you do, make sure YOU aren't the next enemy combatant. - wendelgee2, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2And now that we can't fully "block" people, they really have free rein.
- epohs, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Very sad. Undermines the US's entire claim to moral high ground.
- bobzibub, on 10/10/2007, -3/+5There is not. It is up to civilization to ensure that that hell exists on Earth.
- ninephoenixes, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Someone copy and paste the article for us lazy ***** plzplz.
Damn, I thought when the Times said it was going free, it meant that you wouldn't have to register at all. - TaranWalker, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2...we should send all the neocon-lovers off to war, and keep the intellectuals here...if you support the war, go fight...if not, stay here, and help balance the budget and restore the good name of our beloved country...
- shadogov, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Don't hate the media..become the media.
- flashdance, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I may not completely agree with your assessment, but I do respect and admire how well thought out and written your comments are. You are not combative or spewing recycled material that some other person wrote or said in order to sell "news." You are at least on the path of true, and informed dialog. I would be willing to bet that after much discussion, neither you or I would completely change our opinions, but I bet we would both have more informed views, and would share more views than differ. Well done.
- brockpetrie, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2One nation, under Euphemisms, with Euphemisms and Euphemisms for all.
Amen. - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2You are wrong, sir.
8-ball was Clinton.
Today, they consult the bones.
"The bones say..." - tehowe, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4It's not torture... it's a severe reprimand!
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Executions at dawn is probably a better idea. Bullets are cheaper than prison hotels.
Oh carnivore, how you love me so. :) - gummih, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Don't be hateful
