- strafefire, on 01/16/2008, -68/+172I hate to say this, and I REALLY, REALLY hate to say this, but Glenn Beck actually...got...something...right...for once...
Is this madness?
/prepares to be buried - inactive, on 01/16/2008, -23/+114FDR had intel that Japan was ready to attack pearl harbor and did nothing to stop it, locked Japanese Americans in interment camps, cut a deal with Stalin, FDR had plans to stay in office after WWII yep he was a real great guy.
- Ceeman, on 01/16/2008, -46/+131FDR the socialist and friend of Stalin evil? You dont say.
In school they only teach you warm and fuzzy history about our leaders. Go out and do some research. Just because you were told he was a great guy doesnt mean you should believe it. - sugarazor, on 01/16/2008, -16/+74"Getting mad at people like Glenn Beck, Nancy Grace or Bill O'Reilly is like getting mad at your favorite professional wrestler for not winning the big match."
-Henry Rollins - baanzi, on 01/16/2008, -50/+99As much as I hate Glenn Beck I have to admit he got something right for once. FDR was a communist and sold America down the drain. He did almost as much as Bush to destroy the Constitution.
- bobmyvilla, on 01/16/2008, -5/+54I always thought that the blockade was a direst result to Japan invading the Chinese Manchuria providence in order to increase their natural resources in 1931. We refused to acknowledge any of the territory that Japan seized from China and placed a trade embargo on them. But please correct me if I am wrong.
- littlebylittle, on 01/16/2008, -59/+100Solution: Don't watch Glenn Beck. Period. Pay no attention to him anymore. He's a Psycho.
- jpetrides, on 01/16/2008, -20/+57Strafefire - you are right on with this statement. FDR was the president who shifted this nation's view of what government's job was. Before FDR's programs came in, people looked to themselves and to each other to solve life's problems. After FDR, people looked at government as a means to make one's life better. For this, I think that FDR was the worst President in US History.
- galeninjapan, on 01/16/2008, -39/+76FDR didnt do anything to end the depression. He tried to, but incerasing government spending is not the answer.
- dukeeeey, on 01/16/2008, -62/+97The FDR administration deliberately provoked Japan, by cutting off their oil supply (Japan has zero oil production) so they would attack and USA could enter WW2. They didn't want USA to look like the aggressor.
http://www.cremationofcare.com/images/prs/30-11-19 ... - jmpeagle, on 01/16/2008, -13/+48imagine if Bush pulled an FDR and over the next weeks or so rounded up every Japanese American and out them into camps
- vervalsing, on 01/16/2008, -9/+41FDR had great public relations skills I'll give him that. But I think imprisoning almost the entire Japanese population of the west coast in internment camps is slightly more "evil son of a bitch-y" than the New Deal.
- whataboutdave, on 01/16/2008, -18/+50I dislike Beck, but I won't act like he isn't on to something here. FDR tried to pack to supreme court, and is the only president to have served more than two terms. On top of that, he set up many of the entitlement structures that have done so much to put us into runaway national debt. He's far from my favorite president.
- moocow1452, on 01/16/2008, -3/+34It's SPARTA!!!
But on the other hand, I was watching CNN coverage of the Michigan Primary, and they had Glenn Beck on and asked him about Racial Profiling in elections, and he said something to the tune of, "The more time we spend taking about Race, Religion or Gender, the less time we have for the Economy, War, and Education. We should not make our candidates the issues that decide the presidency." - Digg4This, on 01/16/2008, -26/+54well in all fairness the welfare state kinda began at that time, not saying it wasn't appropriate for that time; its just that it never ended.
- jdh24, on 01/17/2008, -15/+42I'm surprised how many people here are practically worshipping a the altar of FDR.
FDR wasn't good. At all. The Depression was prolonged under his near-authortarian rule, the NAACP despised him, calling one of his programs "Negroes Robbed Again." In short, FDR had a government solution for a government problem: too much government. I'm tired of everyone blindly following the FDR scripture when in reality FDR was one of the worst presidents. - jdh24, on 01/17/2008, -8/+31Let's play a game. Name the President. Which President, by executive order, sentenced one hundred and twenty thousand innocent Americans to years in internment camps? Bush is a good guess, but it's good old FDR. FDR should have been charged with the most grave violation of the Constitution ever, and should have been tried for treason.
- inactive, on 01/16/2008, -7/+30Well, yes, stalin was evil in many ways, but speaking of warm fuzzy history. Let's face it, Stalin was largely responsible for winning WWII. Of course, I'll be buried, but it's true. FDR had to fight with Stalin to win that war. When all was said and done, Joe put more brutally heroic russian chips on the table than any other country was willing to put out there. 33 million. He's the kind of guy you want on your side when you're trying to win a war. History is often taught wrong, and teaching people that stalin didn't fight the hadest part of that war is to teach it wrong. Compare 33 million to 245 thousand and ask yourself why FDR needed Stalin to fight that war with him.
- langzaiguy, on 01/17/2008, -5/+27With the introduction of the New Deal and allllll the alphabet programs he put into place, he also did something else. He changed the way our country views federalism. States had many more powers before the administration of FDR. He's probably the biggest reason the Federal government has as much power as it does today.
- MaximusPryme, on 01/16/2008, -4/+23What does Ron Paul have anything to do with this?
- wheelzr, on 01/16/2008, -2/+21I mean if George Bush put all "middle eastern" looking people into intermittent camps after 9/11 I would bet he would been impeached. FDR put all "Japanese" looking people into camps after Pearl harbor!! I HATE Beck, but FDR was not "stand up" guy we taught.
- mjbigelow, on 01/16/2008, -9/+28You got that right. If we could go back in time and prevent his presidency, this nation (and the rest of the world) would be infinitely better off.
- inactive, on 01/16/2008, -3/+21FDR the man that locked Japanese Americans in interment camps.
- norman619, on 01/17/2008, -7/+24You mean you actually think social security will still be around? It's failing remember? Wake up.
- langzaiguy, on 01/16/2008, -4/+19Don't forget stacking the Supreme Court.
- Rehnborg, on 01/16/2008, -13/+28Thanks FDR for making us foot the bill.
- ManHammer, on 01/17/2008, -9/+24I hate Glenn Beck, but he is unfortunately correct
- demosthenes247, on 01/17/2008, -3/+17Right, corporatism isn't a good thing and is not compatible with true laissez-faire capitalism. In fact, corporatism is basically fascism.
- gtluke, on 01/17/2008, -16/+30FDR started all those 3 letter programs that RonPaul is fighting so hard to eliminate.
i hate him for social security, i want OUT of that pyramid scheme - nova6868, on 01/16/2008, -17/+31I know the poster expects the opposite, but I agree with Glenn Beck and applaud him for presenting an opinion which contradicts the mainstream.
FDR paved the road for Socialism in this country, and it hasn't been the same since. - FredFredrickson, on 01/17/2008, -1/+14The government isn't supposed to help you create wealth either.
- MasterInsan0, on 01/16/2008, -0/+13Of course, people also have the right to be bigots and hate those people. Just as they have freedom of speech, so do the haters.
- inactive, on 01/17/2008, -2/+15It'll be gone anyway, dude. Haven't been watching news for the last 10 years, I see.
- perhapsimcrazy, on 01/16/2008, -18/+31World: George Bush 'is one evil son of a b*tch.'
- thebellmaster1x, on 01/16/2008, -80/+93Wow, uh...
...Glenn Beck's a huge DICK. - bugsy187, on 01/17/2008, -19/+31Isn't FDRs New Deal attributed with softening the blow of The Great Depression and moderately stimulating the economy before the war economy (state controlled) of WW2 pulled the US out of that depression?
If you have sources to the contrary, would you please share them?
As a side note, Beck's "rant" seemed pretty forced and contrived in my view. - jeffiek, on 01/16/2008, -5/+17Yeah, you're missing something. You're missing WHO writes that shortlist.
- maf54, on 01/17/2008, -7/+19Many current historians wouldn't necessarily agree with Beck, but say that FDR's policies did in fact prolong the depression somewhat. In other words, his policies provided temporary relief, but a more free market approach would have ended the depression quicker in the long run.
- norman619, on 01/17/2008, -4/+16Nope. If they didn't teach us this in school it isn't true. :-P
- jmpeagle, on 01/16/2008, -0/+12it was actually supposed to be *put*
- Urusai, on 01/17/2008, -2/+14It became the corporate welfare state.
- yaysanta, on 01/16/2008, -4/+16as bobmyvilla said they placed the embargo on Japan because of their invasion of Manchuria. Also, the US was a supporter of the Allies and thus by cutting off Japan's oil supply they would help the cause to win over the Axis without actually having to get physically involved.
- jdh24, on 01/17/2008, -2/+14I dont' see how stripping 120,000 innocent Americans of their rights and putting them in internment camps because their ethnicity was Japanse, makes anyone a 'hero'. Tthat makes FDR evil.
- inactive, on 01/16/2008, -12/+23On Digg, you don't have to know history or have facts to back up your accusations. If you're saying things that are anti-American, you will be dugg up and assumed to be correct.
To act as if Japan was this peaceful country and the US made them go to war is sheer idiocy--no one with any real historical knowledge would agree. But I guess that's all too typical for Digg. - Terr01, on 01/16/2008, -4/+15Well, he's already done the whole "You have no rights until we say you have rights, and you'll rot in this cell until you tell us what you want, citizen or not!" bit...

That alone is enough reason to not sell them any oil or anything else. - inactive, on 01/17/2008, -1/+12he was being sarcastic.
- nabhanc, on 01/16/2008, -24/+35Maybe it's because I'm Canadian, but why is "socialism" such an evil term in the states.
Oh no, a government that ensures its people enjoy a certain quality of life and are protected in the case of extreme hardship. - MasterInsan0, on 01/16/2008, -1/+12If you're gonna correct someone's grammar, you have to do it with a snarky and/or witty comment. Otherwise, you just seem obsessive. Oh, and retarded. Both of those.
