- inactive, on 12/09/2007, -1/+125You know, my father was a prosecuting attorney long before he opened his own practice. One of his main gripes about the system were how many people in Texas were jailed for marijuana use. He would go out of his way to let people off with minimal fines and probation to keep them out of jail - because bottom line, some people use because they have too. Some people use because they wish, but these people don't belong in prison, and they definitely don't belong in a place inundated with violence when what they were doing at the time wasn't bothering anyone else.
- RudyGiulliani, on 12/09/2007, -1/+100HEY LOOK OVER THERE 9/11!
- mrjit, on 12/09/2007, -3/+95I can't recall a candidate I have loathed 1/100th as much as Ghouliani.
- allatti2d, on 12/09/2007, -0/+77Time for a reality check from an 'old person.' I'm not a routine pot smoker, a hippie, or a stoner. The only times I have used pot in my adult life have been for excruciating pain relief (i.e. migraines, horrific back muscle spasms) and the stuff WORKS. I see people all the time who are in horrible pain and whose only pain relief comes from major prescription drugs that kill the liver a bit at a time. No matter what the substance, legal or illegal, people will find a way to abuse it. I can't stand the idiots who think pot is some kind of dangerous drug when it really isn't -- alcohol is a thousand times more dangerous!
Why is the government so interested in keeping relief away from suffering people? It's ludicrous to me.
(I'm not going to go into all the other benefits of the plant itself, like its properties of providing low cost and natural forms of clothing and fuel! Save that for another discussion.) - Adamande, on 12/09/2007, -2/+57The people here whining about pot-heads and dopers when the topic is medical marijuana: just grow up. How sadistic do you have to be, to deny ill people pain-relief? This is not about spoiled teenagers smoking bongs in their parents' basements. This is about sick people not having to be in pain 24 hours a day. Giuliani is a pathetic pawn for the pharmaceutical companies and you guys are useful idiots.
- inactive, on 12/09/2007, -1/+55No coffee, no tea, no alcohol and no cigarettes?
Otherwise, you're doing drugs. - explnx, on 04/27/2009, -1/+55Look how dishonest the government's view on marijuana is:
"Marijuana is a Schedule I substance under the Controlled Substances Act (CSA). Schedule I drugs are classified as having a high potential for abuse, no currently accepted medical use in treatment in the United States, and a lack of accepted safety for use of the drug or other substance under medical supervision." - rdosser, on 12/09/2007, -0/+49It doesn't give you a hangover!
It's not habit-forming!
You can't OD on it!
It makes sex even better!
It's the cheapest drug there is.
You don't want it! - agentVivid, on 12/09/2007, -7/+52Giuliani should be waterboarded...

They want to end the drug war, which, much like the war on terror, is screwing up the image of America on a global scale.

Got cancer? Here smoke this carton and get back to me. - sb66, on 12/09/2007, -0/+36The only positive thing about drug laws is that they teach kids to distrust government.
The smart kids see the hypocrisy and ***** pretty quick; then they realize that the LAW and JUSTICE are often very different. Then these same kids start looking critically at other government actions. - Enjia, on 12/09/2007, -0/+33wow, i think that is the dumbest comment i have ever heard on digg, not only are you making assumptions about who smokes pot, but your also trying to degrade those who do as less then you. Way to be a total douche.
- rarson, on 12/09/2007, -0/+33No, everyone does drugs. Unless you're saying you don't drink alcohol, you don't smoke cigarettes, and you don't use over-the-counter medicine like aspirin.
The only difference between them, aside from the fact that marijuana is the only one that can't kill you, is that one is illegal and the rest aren't. - JayTaph, on 12/09/2007, -1/+31According to the Geneva Conventions, you cannot do that to waterboards... it's inhumane...
- m3th0dm4n, on 12/09/2007, -0/+29You're probably one of those morons that get drunk every weekend and think somehow it's safer than marijuana. Have a great liver.
- OHiggins, on 12/09/2007, -1/+30"do drugs" and marijuana for medical use are two different things.
- rarson, on 12/09/2007, -2/+30Since when is the truth "an agenda?"
- pgoetz, on 12/09/2007, -0/+26Everyone has an agenda, dumb ass. All High Times is doing is asking the disingenuous pols to put their money where their mouth is. Come on, how many intelligent, educated people believe that Marijuana is a dangerous drug? Almost by definition, none.
- pgoetz, on 12/09/2007, -1/+26Unfortunately reality consists of dealing with ignorant, narrow-minded right wing ***** like yourself on a daily basis. Somewhat do-able, but extremely unpleasant -- medication is definitely called for.
- Jacob, on 12/09/2007, -0/+25this is for medical marijuana not liesure smoking of it. How do people not realize that there are uses for it other than to get messed up. I don't smoke weed but I do support the legalization of at the least medical marijuana if not marijuana for all.
- Makaveli604, on 12/09/2007, -1/+25"do drugs" and marijauna at all are hard to compare.
Unless you consider drinkers "drug users". - mrjit, on 12/09/2007, -1/+24I don't "do *illegal* drugs" but I believe 100% that the Government dictating what we can and cannot ingest in a "free society" is a crock of *****. Like pot heads pose any remote threat to something other than your visit to 711 for Cheetos being ruined as the munchie-induced of society have already taken the stores stock.
- pgoetz, on 12/09/2007, -1/+23Not to mention comment garbage (ahem).
- allatti2d, on 12/09/2007, -0/+21foxmajik -
You make an excellent point (I love the smart discussions). However, I'd have to disagree with you based on what we have now, for example legal prescription drugs. Medical marijuana in smoked form or pill form would be the same (in my mind) as prescriptions are now, where the people who need it are the ones who get it. The people who don't need it but want it can still get it illegally like anything else, although those things, just like marijuana, should be decriminalized if people aren't hurting others.
Also, if everyone is allowed to have it, that does not mean that everyone will use it. I don't drink alcohol as a choice (because it upsets my stomach and adds too many calories), and everyone has that choice. Kids shouldn't smoke pot, just like kids shouldn't drink alcohol, but adults should be able to make their own decisions just like we do with everything else.
Just my opinion. Thanks for good discussion points. - allatti2d, on 12/09/2007, -0/+21donkeydrop -
My, you have an apt name! You must be about 14 and totally clueless about medicine and pain. You've never known anyone with AIDS or cancer or chronic pain. You yourself have obviously never "volunteered time at a hospice" or you would know what the issue is.
Learn something about this subject before you spout off. Then maybe you can change your name to something that will sound intelligent. - inactive, on 12/09/2007, -1/+22religious lunatics and ethical sociopaths.
- wakananda, on 12/09/2007, -1/+21Even chocolate is a drug. And considering it's content of hard fat and sugar, and skyrocketing rates of diabetes and heart disease, it is arguably a dangerous drug. Certainly more dangerous than marijuana.
- RiverBelow, on 12/09/2007, -1/+20OR, maybe, the potheads don't really care other than to see their bud being used for something thats, oh, I don't know, helpful and good for society... Quit asking why potheads would benefit and realize its a good and helpful thing. Some people always want to look at motives and point fingers, you're under that category.
- pianomahnn, on 12/09/2007, -0/+18Yea, pretty much jumping on the bandwagon here. Quit being ignorant.
- khyberkitsune, on 12/09/2007, -0/+18Marijuana is far more effective for me and my pain. I'm opiate intolerant. NSAIDs aren't going to help me one damned bit, and naproxen sodium doesn't quite come close to killing the constant mild pain I'm in. (I had my femur reinforced with a titanium rod, my spine fractured, and my wrist shattered when a drunk driver slammed into me while I was riding my mountain bike.)
I'm moving to California so I can get this stuff without much fear of arrest. I have a legit need and I'll be damned if someone's going to keep me away from effective treatment. - Leo21k, on 12/09/2007, -0/+17It is when you are suffering and there is something that can help you but you are told not to touch it.

You said, "...there are many other painkillers which can be perscribed for people who are in pain and need the medicine!"
Like what? Name five! And the rule is that they cannot have serious side-effects like killing the liver or the heart or tearing up the stomach.
Really, I'd like to know seriously. I am a chronic pain sufferer and the only drugs that help me are both habit-forming and hurt my liver. So whatcha got? Please share!!! - inactive, on 12/09/2007, -0/+14"The LD50 [required ammount for overdose] is estimated to be 20,000 to 40,000 times the amount in one marihuana cigarette (approximately 1500 lb) smoked in a period of 15 minutes (Annas, 1997)."

- GuacamoleSan, on 12/09/2007, -3/+17Again, this shouldnt even be about medical use. We have the right to smoke marijuana to make our lives happier, and the state shouldnt do anything about it.

- inactive, on 12/09/2007, -0/+13Actually, marijuana was made illegal to prevent mexican immigration. But nice story nonetheless. The people who illegalized marijuana are the same people responsible for the prohibition of alcohol.
See Harry J. Anslinger for more details. - Adamande, on 12/09/2007, -0/+12"All eight Democratic candidates have taken positive positions on medical marijuana. Six candidates have publicly promised to end the federal raids, including Sen. Joe Biden (D-DE), Sen. Chris Dodd (D-CT), Rep. Dennis Kucinich (D-OH), John Edwards (D-NC), Mike Gravel (D-AK), and Gov. Bill Richardson (D-NM), who in April signed legislation making New Mexico the 12th state to protect residents who use medical marijuana. Senators Barack Obama (D-IL) and Hillary Clinton (D-NY) have yet to clearly state their support for ending the raids, but along with Sen. Dodd, they voted in opposition to federal legislation in committee that would have increased the penalties for growing and distributing medical marijuana in states that have approved its use."

You know, I haven't thought much about it before your post, but I would love to see a comparison to how many "tokers" are successful vs. living in their parents' basements. I know plenty of very successful people who smoke pot. Of course, I'm in southern CA and my spouse is a musician, so I'm around these people a lot.
I'd be willing to bet that regular pot-smokers also live longer, because stress doesn't eat them alive. -
