The guy's a real piece of work. It's amazing the doublethink his supporters must have doesn't make their heads explode. - mikeneilson, on 10/12/2007, -35/+127Digg me down, but I find it my duty in life to say this every time Clinton/Lewinsky is brought up, since it seems like basically nobody gets it:
Bill Clinton was NOT impeached for having an extramarital affair while in office. Bill Clinton was impeached for lying before a grand jury. As far as perjury goes, the significance of what it is you are lying *about* is irrelevant. The crime was perjury (and yes, people go to jail for it, and yes, it is a big deal), NOT having an affair.
For the record, I think the whole witch-hunt against Clinton was way overdone by the republicans, and it should have never come to his testimony before a grand jury in the first place, but that does not excuse the crime of perjury. If you or I lied before a grand jury during testimony, we WOULD serve jail time. I am tired of hearing the "Bill Clinton got impeached because he got a blow-job" argument. It simply is not true. - rds260, on 10/12/2007, -10/+97donatj, the reason Gingrich resigned was not because of an affair, it was because he was accused of using a tax free organization to fund his campaign, which is illegal. He was never charged, but if he would have stayed, there would have been an ethics investigation.
- pintomp3, on 10/12/2007, -13/+99a "moral" right winger is found to be a hypocrite? it would be ironic if it weren't so commonplace.
- kronix2, on 10/12/2007, -27/+85Aren't you interested when a prominent member of the "moral" right, who was trying to nail Clinton for getting a blowjob, was having an affair at the same time?
I don't think this has anything on Ted Haggard's story, though. Until a GOP member is accused of having gay sex while on meth, Haggard remains the king of moral hypocrisies. - dshPls, on 10/12/2007, -5/+52You might want to add that there's GAY PORN within that link.
- Junkyarddawg, on 10/12/2007, -10/+53What, the attack on Clinton was a cynical political ploy organized by a bunch of hypocrites?!? Wow. I'm shocked. No, really. Who'd ever have guessed?!?

"Did Gingrich lie under oath during a trial in which he was accused of violating someone's civil rights?"
Neither did Clinton. If you are implying that Clinton was on trial, who was the presiding judge? Who served on the jury? Which court system handled this supposed "trial"? How did clinton plea? Guilty? Not guilty? Nolo contendere?
Yours is typical of the ***** being spread by the far right. Ken Starr was supposed to be leading a probe into the legality of Clinton's involvement with the Whitewater Development Corporation, a (roughly) 15 year old failed land deal in which all of the partners, including the Clintons, lost money. Care to explain how Bill Clinton's consensual sex with Monica Lewinsky was relevant to a failed land deal over a decade earlier? Or how bad investing in a land deal violates someone's civil rights? Ken Starr had gone off on every tangent possible in an attempt to smear Clinton -- at the behest of the far right. His questions about Clinton's extramarital affairs were improper and, believe it or not, Clinton is not the first married man to ever lie about an affair. Just ask Gingrich.
By the way, the conclusion of that probe: "This office determined that the evidence was insufficient to prove to a jury beyond a reasonable doubt that either President or Mrs. Clinton knowingly participated in any criminal conduct." - donatj, on 10/12/2007, -36/+75This isn't news, I heard about this DURRING the Clinton thing... If you all remember, its why Gingrich resigned as speaker of the House. Where the hell have you people been?

- bemenaker, on 10/12/2007, -8/+36@thefirelane, unfortunately no, that is not the case. Ken Starr's mission was to find a way to nail Clinton on the land deal down in Arkansas. When that failed, they had nothing else they could do accept admit defeat, until Linda Tripp voilated Federal WireTapping Laws and they used the illegally obtained evidence to go after Billy boy for a BJ. Of course he lied about an affair, who doesn't that isn't looking for a divorce and a default alimony judgment against them.
To impeach Clinton for lying about an affair was a pathetic shot in the dark, and HUGE waste of tax payers money. - Keach, on 10/12/2007, -13/+41"he was accused of using a tax free organization to fund his campaign"

Lemme tell you about Republican "Family Values"
• Newt Gingrich: served divorce papers to his former wife while she was recovering from CANCER surgery. Uh, good ol' "compassionate conservatism," right?
• Bill Bennett: the rightwing pointman on "morality" is an admitted GAMBLING ADDICT.
• Rush Limbaugh: noisy rightwing infotainer who was BUSTED for his addiction to OxyContin, otherwise known as HILLBILLY HEROIN.
• Bill O'Reilly: rightwing infotainer known for his noisy proclamations of morality and personal responsibility. Okay, you're wrong. The Republicans found a woman to accuse Clinton of sexual harrassment, after she, in court, stated that he hadn't sexually harassed her. They found another one but she turned out to be insane.
Bush was accused of raping a man AND his wife -- did you know that? The only difference is the Democrats didn't try to play this as if it was anything more than the rantings of a crazy lady. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -13/+27I don't care about Gingrich's affair. I care about him stalling the approval of the federal budget during the Clinton administration, which stopped the federal government cold for months...furloughing workers for months at a time and leaving mountains of work undone.
Why did he do it?
Clinton, he and some other officials shared a plane ride. He had to sit in the back of the plane away from everyone else, he felt snubbed, and he wanted to get even.
He admitted this publicly.
At least he is honest, but if Gingrich is looking to make a comeback I want to make sure he has an emotional age beyond adolescence. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -8/+22""ok... so you can name 4 supposed examples (albeit arguable ones at that) of conservatives doing various "non-conservative" things.""

The trouble started for Clinton when Paula Jones lawyers deposed Clinton as part of her sexual harassment suit against him, they were trying to show that he has a history of having relationships with people under him while in public office. When they asked him about Lewinsky he knew they had him busted or they wouldn't have asked.
Had he simply acknowledged what he had done with Lewinsky it would have been a minor news story/scandal (after all the whole country already knew he couldn't keep his dick in his pants and frankly few people cared) and it would have been the end of it, but instead he took the stupid choice, lied about it, committed perjury and ended up eventually getting himself impeached.
He also probably (though not guaranteed) could have gotten himself out of it but coming clean when the investigation started, but instead he kept lying (including hiding behind half-truths, legalese and the definition of the word "is") and getting himself further and further into trouble. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -13/+22mike:

You're wrong. Actually he was acquitted of perjury by a 55 to 45 vote. He simply was not convicted of perjuring himself because he chose his words, very very carefully.
And no, it wasn't a big deal. - NSResponder, on 10/12/2007, -14/+22Of course, the issue for which Clinton was impeached was perjury, not the affair itself. Getting laid is legal. Lying under oath is not.

Despite that flaw, do you argue that Bush does not lie to the america people. Are you willing to argue that bush has not lied to us and that there is absolutely no consequences of his lying?
Clinton lied, and it exposed himself a some dark, twisted, sexual deviant who has sex for reasons other than just procreation (gasp!)
