- quirkopatra, on 11/08/2009, -31/+378Look people...Obama is going on Tuesday. Would his presence yesterday or today have served a purpose. Remember Katrina? Bush said that he couldn't go immediately because his presence would have taken emergency services that the people needed.
As much as people hated on Bush for that, I understand it.
There is a recovery going on at Fort Hood. There is a crime scene. The president will be going. I don't understand what happened, and I HATE that it did. I hate that for some reason of political correctness, some people seem to have missed a WHOLE LOT about this ... I can't even call him a soldier.
Respect to Bush for going. He was nearby and I'm sure they appreciated the visit....but this story isn't about Bush VS Obama.
Obama will be going. I hope he's also doing a LOT of thinking about what happened here. - seanayb, on 11/08/2009, -15/+281LETS HAVE A RED VS BLUE FLAME WAR BECAUSE SOMEONE VISITED SOME GRIEVING SOLDIERS!!!
***** children - USArugula, on 11/08/2009, -81/+305Fox News is reporting it. Big ***** secret.
- juslen, on 11/07/2009, -35/+188shut up stupid
- TheCrazyAsian, on 11/08/2009, -24/+176Kudos. Like his policy or not, Bush does support our troops, and i do respect him for that (i never liked his policy)
Obama really cant go anywhere without publicity these days. it kinda happens when you become a president. who knew?
To say one is a troop hater or a publicity whore is a dumb tactic. seriously? Its not about who's better. Fort Hood was a tragedy, and we need to be united as a nation to show our support and love - eliot2000, on 11/08/2009, -70/+189This reminds me of the time that my friends and I bought a small local newspaper so it could print headlines about how great we were and how we weren't trying to gain media attention.
- ChronicColonic, on 11/07/2009, -17/+120Yeah, because they absolutely loved us when Carter, Reagan, Bush I, and Clinton were in office.
Dumbass. - ItWasOnlyAJoke, on 11/08/2009, -19/+106I honestly don't care if you're a liberal, a conservative, or a libertarian, or an anarchist, you gotta give props to them on this.
- jimrooney, on 11/08/2009, -21/+100I don't like Fox. I don't like Bush.
But that's a classy move.
Kudos. (even to Bush) - IUAndar, on 11/08/2009, -8/+86You can't blame him for it not being a secret. If a former leader of the free world visits a place with enough people at it, one of them is going to call somebody.
- juslen, on 11/07/2009, -15/+91Its called a history book. I realize that George W. Bush did not further the worlds agenda of peace and tranquility among all nations. But I am also smart enough realize that 3,000+ Americans died on September 11 because Muslim extremists have hated the United States for over 5 decades. All George W. Bush did was stir up the hornets nest.
And here we are today, still in Iraq, Still in Afghanistan, and the last time I checked there has been no shortage of hatred towards the United States from all over the world. So I have a question for those who want to blame George W. Bush for all of our problems today. Where the hell have you been the last 10 months. Because nothing has changed. - iNONYMOUS, on 11/07/2009, -38/+113I wonder if he gave any "shout outs"
- ironhide, on 11/08/2009, -6/+77Despite our differences, Quirk. I've got more respect for you after this.
- mustangmike53, on 11/07/2009, -18/+89On the off-chance that you are just not aware of the history prior to the 2000 election of GW Bush, you might look up the long list of Muslim attacks on the US and US assets and personnel abroad that all took place before anybody outside of Texas had ever heard of George W.
They include the first World Trade Center bombing, the USS Cole suicide attack, the Beirut barracks, and too many more to list. You might also look into just how many Muslim terrorist attacks that have been directed at countries other than the US, including England, Spain, France, and other Eurpoean countries; and also Indonesia, Phillipines, India, Pakistan, Egypt, Thailand, and many other non-western countries. A little wiki action might go a long way...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Islamic_terrorism - mollydog12, on 11/07/2009, -58/+127'nuff said.
- Crimeodial, on 11/07/2009, -9/+71Berate's gotta be a troll. There's no way he can be serious with this crap.
- norwegianlegion, on 11/08/2009, -12/+71For the same reason Bush has completely stayed off the media radar since he left office: he just wants to be left alone. And that means he took the visit for no political brownie points, but because he felt it was the right thing to do. This was a class act.
- mollydog12, on 11/07/2009, -14/+65juslen.
when you're right, you're right. - solmakou, on 11/08/2009, -4/+55National tragedies should not lead way to partisan *****, I hope Bush was able to give the families a tiny bit of relief.
- PhoenixTx, on 11/07/2009, -15/+64@juslen I agree with you sir.
- johnwayne1, on 11/08/2009, -19/+65Bad president, yes. Bad person, no.
- rcacc65, on 11/08/2009, -6/+52He's still addressed as Mr. President. He's doing what a former president should do. Good thing. Prayers for all the victims.
- norwegianlegion, on 11/08/2009, -32/+75I don't doubt Bush is a good hearted, earnest guy, he just made a really ***** president. Kinda like Jimmy Carter.
- tehknotte, on 11/08/2009, -13/+55He is not a bad man like so many people say.
- starlon2, on 11/08/2009, -11/+51Yeah, because an ex-president showing up to pay respects to injured military and civilians would NEVER be reported to anyone. The only way Fox News could ever hear about it is if Bush called them up himself and said "Hey, I just visited Fort Hood. Sorry I didn't tell you beforehand so you could cover it." Fox News would never have believed it coming from anyone else.
Seriously, think before you type. I hate Bush for his lies about Iraq and torture. I support health care reform, particularly single payer health care, even covering dental. I'm for gay marriage. I think the drug war is the worse thing to ever happen to America. I'm more liberal than Obama. But I have some respect for Bush for making this visit. I live on the outskirts of Temple, Tx, about 15 minutes from Fort Hood. I have family living in Killeen who visits the base often. Not everyone in this area is conservative, and Bush knows that. This was not a Republican visiting Republicans. This was an American visiting injured American soldiers and civilians.
Can't you drop the hate just enough to say something nice, or at least show enough respect to keep your mouth closed? You probably think Republicans are what's wrong with this country. Well, I say attitudes like yours is what's wrong with this country. - toxicityj, on 11/07/2009, -24/+611. I'm sure "BO" either already has or will be shortly visiting them.
2. It's more like the news stations make sure the whole world know, plus some humorous Fox News spin.
3. I think Bush's visit had more to do with it being in Texas than "oh he cares so much!"
btw, I have lots of contempt for both Bush and Obama. But I outright loathe morons that take ignorant cheap shots at people like you did. - Anomaly100, on 11/08/2009, -6/+43Same here. It shouldn't be about Bush vs Obama. Anyway, it's good to see a Republican without the lockstep bullsh!t at a time like this, even though she & I have gone all caps at each other several times. :-)
- mcphilip, on 11/08/2009, -6/+38In before pedobear
- ClaireQuilty, on 11/08/2009, -8/+39Let's hope Bush's years as an ex-president are just as constructive as Carter's.
- Crimeodial, on 11/07/2009, -1/+29Clyde, mustang mike did mention the the Beirut barracks, which happened in 1983, under Reagan's administration, which was Republican.
- Crimeodial, on 11/07/2009, -4/+32Mustang, Well, most liberals are not jackasses like him. I'm very liberal myself, and his comments just piss me off because they're so incredibly stupid and misinformed.
- SandyLanders, on 11/07/2009, -16/+44Berate,
You are one foolish troll. Radical Islam has been attacking US interests long before GW was President. Get a clue. - quirkopatra, on 11/08/2009, -2/+30Don't worry guys...there will always be another thread and I will have an opinion on said thread...and you will think I am terrible for said opinion. Hell hath not frozen over.
- Cain1220, on 11/08/2009, -9/+35Don't get me wrong, I love to hate on Bush just as much as anyone else. However, anyone who thinks a former president can do anything like this and have it REMAIN a secret is an idiot. The point is it wasn't made into a photo op.
- Crimeodial, on 11/08/2009, -1/+26Well, let's look at your "reasoning" issue by issue, shall we>?
1) Yes, Bush was not a very good diplomat. NO, that is not the reason why we have problems with the muslim world, we have had issues with radical islamists for a long time. This week is the 30th anniversary of the beginning of the Iranian hostage crisis. Without getting into dozens of other examples, that's simply a look at how little you seem to know about history.
2) There was a memo, not issued by the Clinton administration, but issued by the CIA a few weeks before 9/11 that said terrorists may be interested in using planes as bombs. But they didn't know where or when, what was he supposed to do? Ground all planes indefinitely? That would have been asinine and caused a giant panic. Remember these guys only had boxcutters and it was the first real example of hijackers killing passengers on a mass scale, so it probably would have just delayed the inevitable, anyway.
3) Anybody that considers attacking the United States know there will be retaliation. Anyone who has ever studied our military history in the slightest knows that we will apply swift and overwhelming force towards anyone who has attacked us.
4) The shooter at Fort Hood was not being sent overseas to "kill his brethren." He is from Virginia, and he is a god damned psychotherapist, not a soldier. He certainly didn't seem to have any issue with shooting people, so I doubt he is much of a pacifist anyway.
In conclusion, I must ask, do you know anything about ANYTHING?
Look, your heart seems to be in the right place, but I would encourage you to stop debating people about politics until you get some kind of education, you're making those of us who are liberals and intelligent look bad by association. - RAAFStupot, on 11/08/2009, -4/+29Dugg because your comment is funny, and also because the people who it is pointedly aimed at, won't even realise that it is a joke. (They would just think that it is a stupid comment).
- Lefts, on 11/08/2009, -15/+36Why is it a secret?
- quirkopatra, on 11/08/2009, -2/+23Crimeodial - I am a conservative, but I want to give you true props for understanding of history and courage to state said understanding.
I stand and salute you! - Cerin, on 11/08/2009, -5/+26They're reporting it after the fact. When it happened, few outside of Fort Hood knew about it, so that seems like reasonable grounds for calling it a secret.
- ironhide, on 11/08/2009, -3/+22"I will have an opinion on said thread...and you will think I am terrible for said opinion. "
Likewise, I'm sure :)
Welcome to what passes for political discourse on Digg. - USArugula, on 11/08/2009, -6/+25Somebody needs a huggums.
- Sil369, on 11/08/2009, -6/+24"he just wants to be left alone."
he's a motivational speaker now - proliance, on 11/07/2009, -25/+42Apparently he doesn't want anyone to give a crap. Its says right there he entered and left in secret and didn't want any press coverage.
*Note that this is the polar opposite of what Pres. Obama did when he visited Dover as a photo op to supposedly spend time with the families of the recently deceased soldiers. - AaronPDX, on 11/08/2009, -20/+37Fox "News" can't even respect the wishes for no press by even Bush.
- juslen, on 11/07/2009, -9/+25BerateBirthers.. he killed 13 people and injured over 30 because he did not agree with the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. But he also killed those people because he did not want to be sent to Iraq. And who would have sent him to Iraq for active duty?
That is right, the same president who proclaimed that he would end the war in Iraq and the same president who said our troops should be in Afghanistan instead during the 2008 elections.
So instead of being a hypocrite and propping up your beliefs with partial truth, you need to look at the entire picture and realize if you are willing to blame George W. Bush you must also blame Barack Obama and all the Democrat and Republican Senators who voted in favor of funding the wars. - Anomaly100, on 11/08/2009, -7/+22Looking for attention? Aww! That's so cute.
- DaviDTC, on 11/08/2009, -7/+22And the ultra right isn't? Please, the extremes on both sides are.
- GABACALM, on 11/08/2009, -9/+23It's a shame more people can't seem to separate the two like you can.
- monodelasno, on 11/08/2009, -6/+20USArugula: And a zebra is not a horse with stripes.
- Danby123, on 11/08/2009, -4/+181/10 trolling. Hardly even trying...
