I'm not an american, but, I am an atheist and I think your comparisons are absurd, aswell is the idea of "atheist rights". I mean, just because I'm an atheist doesn't mean that I want to be lumped in with a bunch of asshats that think not believing in god is some sort of religion. - fasda, on 10/11/2007, -20/+380You know this article might be a tad more important if the Gorge Bush featured was actually the man being talked about was todays president instead of the president from nearly 20 years ago. Whats next news of Microsoft's latest operating system Windows 3.0
- Sun.Surfin, on 10/16/2007, -15/+228I'm currently reading "The God Delusion" by Richard Dawkins. He brings up this quote, but also provides a disclaimer. This interview was not recorded, but only transcribed by Sherman. As a result, I'd take it with a grain of salt.
- tdrizzle, on 10/11/2007, -15/+168Latest and breaking news from digg as always.
- Angostura, on 10/11/2007, -5/+156As an atheist, I see a great need for an Intelligent Designer to do something about that appalling page background.

- osirisothedead, on 10/11/2007, -6/+84No, you're atheist by birth. Theists are theists by choice.
- inactive, on 10/16/2007, -37/+110what battle is that? Do athiests get denied admitance to restaurants?
Do athiests get beet up like gay peoplenow adays?
How exactly are athiests rights being abused? - NikoKun, on 10/11/2007, -29/+100I'm Atheist! We don't believe in god... get over it... it doesn't make us any less american, or any less equal humans...
We just understand that logic and science is more important than religion... - GunnerMcGrath, on 10/11/2007, -6/+68George H. W. Bush is not the current president. Anyone who actually read the article would notice not only the very old dates but also mention of the Bush/Quayle ticket. Why do people digg 20 year old news articles?
- remccain, on 10/16/2007, -6/+51Remember, God loves you.
He loves you very, very much.
... And he needs money. - jonnyeh, on 10/16/2007, -5/+45Atheists do get beat up for their beliefs:

(oh and by the way, this news is about 20 years old).
- znicket, on 10/11/2007, -3/+37You don´t have to be a theologian in order to not believe. People who act as though you need to be specially educated in order to reject fantastic unproven notions are building a bastion on sand.

- DAVIBE, on 10/11/2007, -7/+26Don't worry atheist!
George .H.W Bush doesn't really mean that.
Because he is not really a christian, he's a business man.
He is just trying to please Evangelicals which make a big percentage of population. This is his advertisement for his son(jeb) or something.
Its just BUSINESS! nothing personnel. - superyounan1, on 10/11/2007, -2/+21you're right in saying that you can't really compare, in absolute terms, what gays,/lesbians, and the black community has gone through historically with what athiests are going through today, but if you measure the treatment of these groups according to the norms of the time, then you'd see that athiests are subjected to difficulties that are, by today's social and political climates, ethically unacceptable by any measure.
For example, imagine if you never stood a chance at getting into office because you're black, either because of a law, or because no one would vote for you. Well if you lived in the 1930's, you might measure that as a 20/100 on a hypothetical injustice scale, relatively low because you've seen and heard of much worse injustices, such as a black teenager being brutally beaten by angry white mobs because that teenager whistled at a white girl... maybe a 80/100? 90/100?
But TODAY, a black candidate being automatically disqualified either because of a law or because of the zero possibilitiy that they'd get elected would be considered OUTRAGEOUS, much higher than 20/100 on the hypothetical scale.
What i'm tyring to say is, in ABSOLUTE terms, NO theres no comparison... but why do athiests get different "scales" than other people? Athiest not getting into office because of their beliefs (or lack there of) because no one would vote for them as soon as they found out, well that doesn't outrage people the same way, in fact most people probably support it.
You could also take a converse argument, imagine you transplant a modern evolutionary/scientific/naturalist athiest from today and take them to the 1930s... how would they get treated?
Regardless of your beliefs, you should defend other people's rights and entitelments to fairness, equality, and justice. Many athiests after all are ideologically humanists, and Jesus himself was a wonderful humanist.
I can't quote scriptures or anything of that sort, but there is a verse in the new testament where a sick man was pleading for help on a day that happened to be the Jewish Sabbath. It was a law that no one should work on the Sabbath, and by asking for help he was likewas asking people to break their sabbath law to rest on that day, so priests ordered him jailed according to the law of the time. Jesus called them hypocrites, pointing out that if they are willing to feed and tend to their cattle on the sabbath, lest the cattle would weaken and go hungry, then how can they deny at least equal care for this sick man? Didn't he have more dignity than a mere animal?
What you can take away from that is that Jesus believed in the dignity of the individual, whether they had lepracy or not.
Geroge H. W. Bush and his administration were disrespecting Athiests' diginities and human beings being suggesting they can't be considered patriots, as if somehow athiests were not human, or they were worth less than a religious person because of their views. In reality, the exact opposite should have happened if they regard themselves Christians, according to the teachings of Jesus and the treatment of others, and basic ethics - fatfinger, on 10/11/2007, -17/+35Funny that a man who believes in God would do so much killing.
- fyngyrz, on 10/11/2007, -2/+20No, that is incorrect. Theist means someone who "holds a belief in a god or gods." The root "A" means "without." Atheist is literally "without holding a belief in a god or gods." There are atheists who claim to "know" there is no god, and there are atheists who say the issue is unknowable. It's just like theism, really, there are many kinds of theists, and there are many kinds of atheists.
For example, I am an atheist - I don't believe in a god or gods, not even a little bit, because I see absolutely no evidence supporting such a concept - but I don't deny god or gods; perhaps there's a whole pantheon of them. What I deny is having found any knowledge that would lead to the underpinnings I require to engender belief at any level. Doesn't even mean they aren't there. Just that in a lifetime of looking, no such thing has come to my attention. - Konrad9, on 10/11/2007, -38/+56Did my ***** president just say he has the right to say I'm not a ***** citizen?
So sick of this *****. Put him in the street and let people decide what to do with him.
I don't care what religion he is, I'm not bashing his religion, or any religion.
Someone in his position saying something like that is COMPLETELY unacceptable, and ***** needs to happen to him. - slicedoranges, on 10/11/2007, -1/+18Atheists aren't horribly oppressed, but imagine running for any election and being openly atheist.
- venir, on 10/11/2007, -1/+18No, but your former President did.
- MrFlesh, on 10/11/2007, -12/+28Actually bringing up your an aethiest at work can get you fired for "other reasons" some political jobs and jobs with church organizations can exclude you for it. However I find it intresting that he says most of our founding father are not patriots.....and it wasn't "one nation under god" until the 1940's. Example # 1,654,007 that religious people are hateful bigots and shouldn't be taken seriously....like the rest of the 1st world has already decided.
- Konrad9, on 10/11/2007, -10/+26Would it make you feel better if I said "My former president"?
He's still called "Mr. President." - ManJamimah, on 10/11/2007, -1/+16I don't even know what to say. COME ON!!! As a Christian, I have no problem with atheists and mindsets like this are why there are so many problems between atheists and Christians in the first place. Not citizens? W.T.F.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1690% of this thread doesn't realize that this is GHWB...
/Gets the popcorn out - Sun.Surfin, on 10/11/2007, -6/+20Um, I appreciate your recommendation of literature, but I'm perfectly capable of determining who is a "good" philosopher myself, thanks. I'm currently reading up on both "sides of the story", including the works of Richard Dawkins, Sam Harris, and Christian apologetics writer Josh McDowell. I'm a thinker, and being such, I'm capable of sifting through the crap in all of these books. It's not as if I'm replacing my own mind with that of Richard Dawkins. I'm able to make decisions on the validity of each collection of writings myself.
- fonetap, on 10/11/2007, -1/+14incorrect sir.
atheists include agnostics, which have no specific inclination either way.
Anyway to imply children of radical fanatic "born again" evangelical types have a choice to follow or not is laughable at best. A couple on CNN once claimed their daughter was "reborn" and "accepted christ" at the age of 4.... yea she CHOSE that.... hehehhe :) FSM FTW - 15charmaxwtf, on 10/11/2007, -6/+19Pfff, individuals have rights, not groups.
- Tenlow, on 10/11/2007, -3/+16You mean GW's dad.
- quez, on 10/11/2007, -10/+23Wow! This is new and really relevant, considering how active George H.W. is in politics today!
/sarcasm - Jo9100, on 10/11/2007, -13/+26what do you expect from W's own father?? intelligent statements? ah come on...
- Mecdude, on 10/11/2007, -9/+21"George H. W. Bush"
Ready kids? Let's play, who's your president! - Synematic, on 10/11/2007, -3/+15@Hermitwise. I thought Atheism was an abscence of belief. It's the same as most people taking for granted that there is a god, except the opposite. There's no faith there. I don't believe in any god not because science has any evidence against it, but because there's no evidence for a god. Although if it takes you faith to not believe there's a purple dragon in my garage, then I guess it might take me faith to believe there's no god.
- bort, on 10/11/2007, -1/+13No, Atheism isn't a religion.
- keyboardduder, on 10/11/2007, -1/+12OK, so its semantics you want to talk about? If I said Congressmen take money from lobbyers, it means that some do. If I said ALL CONGRESSMEN take money from lobbyers, then it would be the way you are thinking of it. I apologizeif i hurt your feelings but the people who mainly hate people like me who are (dare i say) godless, are people who see god. (jesus, god, alla, etc.).
- obe1kenobi, on 10/11/2007, -1/+12Accepting evolution really has nothing to do with religion.
- insomniac8400, on 10/11/2007, -4/+15Unfortunately, if you believe in god, you can't be a patriot. Since loyalty to your country would contradict your loyalty to go.
- idonthack, on 10/11/2007, -1/+12This news is literally older than me. Cool.
- Batfishy, on 10/11/2007, -2/+13Atheist is not a belief. What is the word for someone who does not believe in ghosts? Atheism is accepting a different theory other than God(s). I accept evolution.
- miriclaire, on 10/11/2007, -0/+10yeah--the page was last updated in 1991, I think.
