Couldn't he have been referring to the effects of the first plane's collision? I for one remember turning on the TV at the end of my first period class (yes, i was still in high school when it happened, i was a senior) and seeing a gaping hole in the world trade center tower... the caption read "Plane crash at WTC"... so, I saw the first plane crash before i knew about the second one...

Not to mention that the part where he says "you know the TV was obviously on" strongly sounds like extemporaneous detail added to make a lie seem more believable.
