- TonyStark, on 10/09/2008, -6/+188Maybe McCain will say that he is an appeaser?
- Olon97, on 10/09/2008, -5/+156Obviously this means that Petreaus is now somehow an America hating terrorist.
- bobtheunholy, on 10/10/2008, -5/+127From the first debate:
Obama: Senator McCain mentioned Henry Kissinger, who's one of his advisers, who, along with five recent secretaries of state, just said that we should meet with Iran – guess what – without precondition. This is one of your own advisers.
McCain rejected Obama's claim:
McCain: By the way, my friend, Dr. Kissinger, who's been my friend for 35 years, would be interested to hear this conversation and Senator Obama's depiction of his -- of his positions on the issue. I've known him for 35 years.~~
~~Kissinger Sept. 20: Well, I am in favor of negotiating with Iran. And one utility of negotiation is to put before Iran our vision of a Middle East, of a stable Middle East, and our notion on nuclear proliferation at a high enough level so that they have to study it. And, therefore, I actually have preferred doing it at the secretary of state level so that we -- we know we're dealing with authentic...
CNN's Frank Sesno: Put at a very high level right out of the box?
Kissinger: Initially, yes.But I do not believe that we can make conditions for the opening of negotiations.

I thought the surge was the only reason for our "success" in Iraq... - StupotAce, on 10/09/2008, -13/+90There are only two types of people who are voting for McCain for this election.
Hardcore Republicans (of which, I have no qualms) and people who won't vote for Obama because he's black/a terrorist/a muslim. This video isn't going to change anybody's mind. - LeeinJax, on 10/09/2008, -6/+78Of course talk to enemies. Anyone rational would recommend making the attempt at diplomacy first. McCain is dead wrong - you can't really get away with killing everyone else in the world.
He seems to think over half of Americans are his enemies, too. McCain's temper, plus Palin's vindictiveness are a dangerous combination. - sk11, on 10/10/2008, -1/+65"To jaw-jaw is always better than to war-war."
- Winston Churchill - algaeturd, on 10/10/2008, -5/+57I love how republicans are clearly digging this down. This is YOUR guy! Remember? McCain has been citing him in every public appearance! Now he's on board with Obama's approach. Leaves kind of bitter taste in your mouth does it, to see that Obama has won the respect of such a higher up in the Bush administration? Right is right. Can't spin this.
- alexology, on 10/10/2008, -2/+53If this moronic stance that bush and mccain have of non-diplomacy and extreme military aggression was around during the cold war, we would have all been dead.
- Nowheredan, on 10/10/2008, -1/+44Dude, you're making Obama supporters (myself included) look bad. There's video of McCain shaking Obama's hand before and after the debate.
- Bith8654, on 10/10/2008, -3/+43I wish the right and left wouldn't consider each other "enemies," but instead just "opponents." This whole demonizing of the other side is what is really tearing this country apart.
- ErickStevenson, on 10/10/2008, -3/+38Bomb Bomb Bomb Bomb Bomb [Insert Country]... talk later. The Neocon Creed.
- gospe1337, on 10/10/2008, -3/+38Wow, you can't even slant this. Just... owned.
- schkura, on 10/10/2008, -1/+34He must not have been at a McCain rally-- nobody yelled "Terrorist!" at him.
- brishchik, on 10/10/2008, -1/+33Bah, this general dude has never been a POW or a soccer mom or a pitbull with lipstick (but without brain). What does he know about war?
- inactive, on 10/09/2008, -67/+98And yet McCain won't even shake Obama's hand.
- Insightful, on 10/10/2008, -2/+33Exactly. Bush, McCain, and Republicans will have you believe that engaging your enemies in discussion is legitimizing and strengthening the enemy.
The reality is when you do not talk to them, they get stronger. Like North Korea detonating a nuclear bomb, Iran spinning its centrifuges, Hamas and Hezebollah winning elections, and Chavez kicking our ambassadors out of Venezuela.
They will scare you with words like appeasement without realizing it takes real courage intelligence to sit down across from your enemy to find out how to engage them and win. - GoKings, on 10/10/2008, -3/+34McCain is going to say "He never said without preconditions."
- Eliot99, on 10/09/2008, -1/+30Maybe so. But, it shows once again how screwed McCain's judgment is.
- rotundo, on 10/10/2008, -2/+26I've heard Republicans say again and again that talking with enemies is bad bad bad. Not just McCain, but most have harped on Obama for his stance that he would talk to these people. The idea that we should give tough leaders the "silent treatment" has been bought hook, line, and sinker, by much of the Right.
And it's a load of crap. It has nothing to do with being conservative. Reagan talked with Gorbachev. That's how you keep working on things. Even if you're just going to tell them in person that they have to change x, y, and z, you should do it. It doesn't "legitimize" them. They're already the leader of a nation; they're already legitimate.
In any case, your comment is blind to the rhetoric of international relations as pushed by the neocons. They're idiots, and you ought to call a spade a spade. - Leadman584, on 10/10/2008, -1/+24Well no kidding. Sitting down and working out differences, cost of a plane ticket. War to express your views, Trillions. Need a Visa Ad for this one.
- Rixar13, on 10/10/2008, -3/+25I find it interesting that every position that Obama takes is the correct position. Yes he is Presidential.
- ErickStevenson, on 10/10/2008, -3/+25Muslim is the new N***er... sorry to say it, since they can't say the N word out loud they have to put another label on him, sad part is people actually believe this bull.
- GorfTron, on 10/10/2008, -1/+21This man is pals with Ayers, right Hannity?
- Miche1987, on 10/10/2008, -2/+22And for my fundamentalist Christian friends who are pro-war...
"If thine enemy be hungry, give him bread to eat; and if he be thirsty, give him water to drink: For thou shalt heap coals of fire upon his head, and the LORD shall reward thee." - Proverbs 25:21-22 - londubh, on 10/10/2008, -0/+18As much as I dislike McCain, he did shake Obama's hand. McCain's disdain is obvious though.
- PJ1967, on 10/10/2008, -0/+18You mean the way Bush's Defense Secretary is willing to reconcile with the Taliban?
http://www.reuters.com/article/newsOne/idUSTRE4987 ... - Dumbledorito, on 10/10/2008, -3/+21I'm going to assume, jetboy, that you're a fan of Ronald Reagan. You might want to look at his second term. After all the chest-thumping and dick-waving of his first term, he suddenly realized that doing that with the Soviets would lead to only one place: Nuclear war.
Even in the face of criticism from his own party and the emerging right-wing talk radio radicals, he (you might want to sit down) negotiated with the "Evil Empire." Later, a lot of conservatives somehow attributed his successes to being what Bush II currently is: Mule-headed, full of black and white, with us or against us, no negotiations, etc. This convieniently ignores what was actually effective in favor of grabbing one's metaphorical crotch, which is apparenlty a lot easier than thinking and not letting emotion carry you to disaster. - JigoroKano, on 10/10/2008, -0/+17North Korea has been like that forever. The Korean War never even ended technically.
Do you always think in terms of category fallacies, or just when it supports you preexisting views? - unhg, on 10/10/2008, -1/+18Don't care if it's a +1 to Obama supporters; but it's definitely a -1 to McCain credibility.
Current McCain credibility: -42
And what Petreaus said is exactly what Obama has been saying all along, diplomacy before bullets. Now which part do you not get? - pitdog, on 10/10/2008, -3/+19Even Terminator talked to his targets. "I'll be back" and such.
- emailowndme, on 10/10/2008, -0/+15if by, convinced to work with us, you mean are paying several million to for not shooting at us, sure. What happens when we stop paying them???
- ReeferChiefer42, on 10/10/2008, -1/+16Petreaus and Powell, the only two top-positioned men I think have tried to make the best of this whole mess. They have my respect and I hope the next administration does what the last didn't: let the military fight its war, not the executive branch.
- Shiftgood, on 10/10/2008, -3/+18dude, your rhetoric + your profile pic = obviously abused as a child.
i cant tell if it was physical or sexual but im sorry you had to go through it.. it must have been tough. But out there somewhere there is help. - johndk, on 10/10/2008, -1/+16Drop it. It's like saying Obama associated with terrorists. No wonder this country is so divided. People are willing to propagate lies so long as it makes their candidate look good. But condemn the other party when they do it.
- drstock, on 10/10/2008, -4/+19LALALALALALALA I CAN'T HEAR YOUR RATIONAL ARGUMENTS THEREFORE I CAN'T BE WRONG LALALALALALALA
- oilcan, on 10/10/2008, -2/+16GAH! Even our generals are against us!
- TrevorBradley, on 10/10/2008, -1/+15In the recent Canadian debate (Election in 4 days!) all 5 leaders, including the current Conservative prime minister, agreed talks with the Taliban were necessary to resolve the conflict in Afghanistan.
- mattdawgg, on 10/10/2008, -2/+16Thanks professor. It was sarcastic. Only John McCain thinks talking had nothing to do with it. So eager to sound smart...
- algaeturd, on 10/10/2008, -0/+14You say, 'no kidding' but think of the MILLIONS of Americans who would rather bomb than talk. It's part of American culture these days. When we should be settling differences with words and pressure, we've come to lean on bombs and military.
It's all part of the demonization of intellectualism by the republicans. People who are uneducated can't understand or comprehend how words and discussions can settle disputes. The GOP is like the little bully on the playground. If you say something that they can't understand or turn around, they just want to start swinging. - Volatile36, on 10/10/2008, -0/+14What I've heard from the oh so many ignorant racist people I work with:
"I'll never vote for him, he'll give out reparations."
"He's a terrorist, he's Arab and his name is Hussein."
"Obama refuses to say the pledge of allegiance."
"He wasn't even born in America. I guarantee it."
"He was never a Christian, he went to Islamic school! Haha! Gotcha now!"
"Hopefully someone will lynch him."
"As soon as he gets inta office, he's gonna pull our troops out of I-raq, and then that's it. The terrists win."
Yeah, so, suffice it to say, I'm thinking about burning the place down. - inactive, on 10/10/2008, -1/+13@rob: actually that's pretty much how it goes. Dispute resolution 101: get the parties together and find out what the issues are. ??? That's more like common sense 101. Plus the only reason Iran dislikes us is because we treat them like a our little bitch, and when our little bitch aint doing what we say, we impose stricter trade embargos on them.
This all stems from the Anglo-Persian oil company, a farce which was setup up during the puppet government of the Shah of Iran used to rape and pillage Iranian oil while giving minimal benefits to the Iranians. They got pissed, took back their government and took control of their oil. So, us being the ***** we are...restrict pretty much all trade with Iran.
And you wonder why their pissed. - justiceape, on 10/10/2008, -2/+14Petraeus is a Terrerist! Get 'im!
- gallito89, on 10/10/2008, -1/+13Convince McCain of this
- GlassAgate, on 10/10/2008, -3/+15Correction: ..because he's black, because they think that he is, or could be, a Muslim, or a
terrorist. - jeffwbnyc, on 10/10/2008, -1/+12"...legitimizing that person and their crazy beliefs..."
I don't understand how that works. They are leaders in their respective countries. Their crazy beliefs (and there's no doubt that they are crazy) have been legitimized by the people who put them in power in the first place. Ahmadinejad is just a figurehead and the Shah will replace him sooner or later.
The only way to seriously challenge their beliefs is through discourse. Propaganda rhetoric on both sides only works on stupid people. Bombs don't work at all (see al Queda's/Taliban's current rise in power).
Besides, not meeting with them is already used for propaganda purposes. Damned if we do, damned if we don't. Let's try the other one for a while. - Volatile36, on 10/10/2008, -1/+11That "without precondition" sounds awfully familiar...
No one HAS EVER said anything about appeasement and surrender. You don't HAVE to do anything to talk with someone. Just because you're talking with them doesn't mean you HAVE to agree with them, correct? I'm talking to you now, but I doubt either one of us is thinking about surrendering our viewpoints. Now, if each of us makes a valid, reasonable point, we'll be more likely to concede to that, correct? Precondition means nothing. That's having the deal before you negotiate the contract. The cake made before you've bought the ingredients. No one will ever talk with preconditions because it's impossible, especially with a country you haven't had diplomatic relations with in decades. Precondition is saying "Hey, we can talk if you do this and this and this," but it's not going to work with an enemy that thinks that they are on a level playing-field with you. I would concede nothing if I thought I had a chance to get what I want. Neither would you. Get my point? - ErickStevenson, on 10/10/2008, -6/+16Agreed, McCain has basically taken this personally and dragged this election to the mud and will do anything to win this election even at the cost to the American people.
- Wisgary, on 10/10/2008, -3/+13Damned liberal soldiers.
