- dbalpert, on 05/05/2008, -10/+143CONFIDENTIAL/URGENT POLITICAL PROPOSAL
Dear Sir
First we must solicit your confidence in this issue. This is by virtue as being utterly confidential and "top secret".
We are SENATOR HILLARY CLINTON, the wife of the former United States head of state, PRESIDENT BILL CLINTON, and also SENATOR JOHN MCCAIN, friend and associate of current head of state PRESIDENT GEORGE W BUSH. We got your contact through business inquiries as we were searching for contacts of a citizen who can help save our and our family's political careers since our country has been frustrating us.
We are top officials of the United States Senate Government who are interested in importation of oil into our country with funds that are presently trapped in the FEDERAL TRANSPORTATION TRUST FUND dedicated to improving transportation. We wish to send this money to overseas accounts in the MIDDLE EAST but cannot due to restrictions in Congress Transportation Equity Act requiring that this money must be spent to build roads, bridges and high speed trains.
If you accept we will deliver to your a sum of 30 DOLLARS in the summer 2008 in form of a "GAS TAX HOLIDAY". You will then deliver this money to accounts of our friends in Middle East by taking it to your nearby gasoline station where they have information to forward the money. Please supply your bank account, social security number, address and your vote in DEMOCRATIC PRIMARIES AND NOVEMBER GENERAL ELECTION.
But bear in mind that this transaction requires absolute confidentiality. Do not visit WWW.GASTAXSCAM.COM where there is information about dangers of our proposal and a petition to stop us from this diversion of funds.
PLEASE NOTIFY US URGENTLY OF YOUR ACCEPTANCE OF THIS PROPOSAL
Awaiting your rapid response
Yours truly
SENATORS HILLARY CLINTON AND JOHN MCCAIN - ILeanLeft, on 05/05/2008, -8/+80But why do voters continually fall for this crap? Isn't it true that in some sad way this crap is working? Ugh... I look forward to the day when base intelligence and 16 teeth do not qualify you as an elitist!!
- mborgel1, on 05/05/2008, -3/+57The only way to bring down gas prices is to reduce demand. Wouldn't this only raise demand?
- Malacandra95, on 05/05/2008, -6/+43You would have to be a mugu to fall for such a transparent scheme.
- AuburnTigers, on 05/05/2008, -4/+38"Eliminating the federal gas tax all summer would only save American consumers about 30 dollars, send more money overseas, reduce our ability to invest in infrastructure, and encourage even more driving and pollution contributing to global climate change. At the end of the summer, gas prices would be as high or higher than before and no problems will be solved."
Slippery slope. s l i p p e r y s l o p e. - NoDrama, on 05/05/2008, -3/+29Screw the petitions, people, this is about media coverage, no petition will change the panderers plan, they're trying to bamboozle voters. Go right to the source, write to the paper or tell your tv stations what a foolish and transparent game the old-guard is running to try to retain power.
- inactive, on 05/05/2008, -1/+2716 teeth? Pretty boy.
- aussiejan, on 05/05/2008, -3/+28That is exactly what the result would be which would raise prices as increased demand always does. Economics 101 which apparently Clinton and McCain did not take in college.
- leetleo, on 05/05/2008, -1/+23The primary purpose of the gas tax is to maintain the roads that we drive on. If we do more driving, we buy more gas, and as a result we generate more revenue to maintain the roads that we put more wear and tear on. The money for maintaining the roads has to come from somewhere, so it can be assumed that any relief in gas taxes now means an increased tax rate sometime or somewhere else. It's complete *****.
- cnealmcneil, on 05/05/2008, -7/+28Voters largely aren't falling for this scam. See today's NY Times poll:
http://www.nytimes.com/2008/05/05/us/politics/05po ...
Support for this idea will continue to decline as people learn more about it. Shame on them for insulting our intelligence. - unpolloloco, on 05/05/2008, -1/+191) internet polls are almost never representative of the entire population
2) your link is dead - demiurgency, on 05/05/2008, -3/+21Unfortunately, according to the results from the last US presidential election, the population appears to be at least 51% mugu.
- reynolds3g, on 05/05/2008, -0/+17Here's a novel idea, why not address the root of the problem for once.
- AuburnTigers, on 05/05/2008, -3/+19We're Americans! That's what we do! We whine! And eat coneys! And watch baseball! And give birth to fat kids! Deal with it!
- inactive, on 05/05/2008, -1/+16your profile says you're from fresno.
- inactive, on 05/05/2008, -5/+20Why can't you stop bitching about how little we pay?
- Taciturn, on 05/05/2008, -2/+16I'm not registering to vote in an online poll.
- loggia, on 05/05/2008, -0/+14"No matter whom we support in the Presidential race, we want a race about serious ideas instead of cheap scams."
The mainstream media doesn't. - DiscoLando, on 05/05/2008, -3/+16References, please. It's highly annoying to read things like 'Experts and commentators agree...' in story summaries when no reference is made to the supposed experts and/or commentators.
Ironically, it's just as foolish of you to expect me to blindly believe such statements. It's funny how it works both ways! - satanatnmtedu, on 05/05/2008, -4/+17You can't explain because if gas prices did go down people would be encouraged to drive more and add to pollution. If these tax is removed, then the ability to invest in roads infrastructure would be reduced. It is a dumb idea. It is especially dumb from Hillary's point of view to soak the gas/oil companies. As if the gas/oil companies wouldn't increase their prices to compensate for the new tax.
- inactive, on 05/05/2008, -1/+13You want to lower gas prices by 10%-20%?
Produce only three grades/blends of fuel. No more of these region specific or winter mixes. There are 30 to 40 different types of 'regular' gas formulas out there. Refineries could keep up with demand if they didn't have to stop for a day every month to change formulas. - fmaxwell, on 05/05/2008, -2/+14You are clearly the type of economics-challenged voter that they hoped to dupe with this scam.
If the tax was removed, what would stop the oil companies and gas stations from simply jacking up their prices by a total of 18 cents per gallon? Did you think that they were not going to charge what the market would bear?
*IF* gas prices actually dropped in response to this cut, here's what would happen:
1. Some people, who were just at the point of considering a more fuel-efficient vehicle, would decide to hang on to their gas-guzzling cars and trucks. Not all, but some. Every time the gas price goes up by a penny, some percentage of people invest in more fuel-efficient vehicles. When it drops, people either buy less fuel-efficient vehicles or elect to hold on to vehicles that are not so fuel efficient.
2. People would buy more gas (law of supply and demand as related to price). This would mean that we would need to import more oil. That means more oil in the pockets of foreign oil suppliers.
3. More driving means more pollution. Especially when the people are electing to drive less ecologically sound vehicles because of artificially lower fuel prices.
4. Less demand for fuel-efficient vehicles means fewer sold which means less R&D money going into their development and marketing. High fuel prices result in corporate investment in R&D into alternative energy and more fuel-efficient vehicles. Do you think that we would have cars like the Toyota Prius, Smart Car, or Honda Civic Hybrid if gas still costs 35 cents per gallon?
Okay, Mr. Economics. What's your answer to that? - x0rcist, on 05/05/2008, -4/+16The sad fact is that voters are stupid enough to be swindled by Clinton and McCain when the MSM lacks unbiased coverage.
- raynar, on 05/05/2008, -1/+12its mogwai, retard.
- satanatnmtedu, on 05/05/2008, -1/+12It wouldn't save Americans anything because the tax would shift to oil companies who would pass it along to consumers.
- trutek, on 05/05/2008, -1/+12keep telling yourself you're 100% correct.
-nothing is worse than a pompous dumb ass. - inactive, on 05/05/2008, -2/+13not really. people will still be buying approximately as much gas whether or not it is a couple of cents less expensive per gallon. people will essentially remain unaffected by the repeal of the tax. the government is the real loser here due to reduced tax revenue, which could lead to reduced transportation spending. the big winners are the oil companies, because they don't have to change the price of gas to compensate for the lower taxes.
- asspants, on 05/05/2008, -1/+11this is one of the situations where you use 'Your' instead of You're.
- DanMiller, on 05/05/2008, -2/+11Yes because the answer is to have a governement with no means of supporting our country. No national defense, no public schools, no medical care for children born into poverty, no one to keep roads driveable, no police, no judicial system. Taxes should be controlled but a complete lack of taxes would be devastating to the majority of the population.
- flink405, on 05/05/2008, -8/+17Cut taxes.
Amazing how many people here want to give more of their money to Government bureaucrats.
Cut taxes. All taxes. - cruzlee, on 05/05/2008, -0/+9{{{ Award }}}
- paperclipsNsoup, on 05/05/2008, -2/+11Your profile says your from Fresno California, last I checked California is part of the US and only charges 7.25% + 18¢ per gallon... Let me check my math... Yep your a troll
- inactive, on 05/05/2008, -4/+12Cutting the gas tax would be like feeding a meth addict more *****. Unfortunately, we the voters are that addict and that meth is called gasoline.
- ultar6, on 05/06/2008, -0/+8My greatest regret is that I can only click the thumbs up icon once. This was priceless.
- nicktheawesome, on 05/05/2008, -1/+9I wish there was a button next to the link that says "Is so-and-so being offensive?" that said, "Is so-and-so being stupid?"
Digging down isn't thorough enough. - inactive, on 05/05/2008, -0/+8Obama did support a gas tax holiday years ago in the Illinois state senate. He saw first hand that it didn't work. So why, with concrete evidence proving otherwise, do McCain/Clinton still think this initiative will work will work on a federal level?
Know what? Screw it. I don't expect you to answer this. The topic is clearly over your head. - headzoo, on 05/05/2008, -1/+9Speculation is so much fun!
- TheCash, on 05/05/2008, -1/+8a troll and a moron.
- ADVIZR, on 05/05/2008, -4/+11We'll know soon enough whether voters are stupid enough to be swindled by Clinton and McCain.
- TheCash, on 05/05/2008, -3/+10Or increase supply, which could be accomplished if the government would allow drilling in the north, offshore, and let oil companies build newer, more efficient refineries. But hey, that's bad or something. We could also reduce demand by closing fossil fuel powerplants and opening some Nuclear Power plants. Oh wait... thats bad too, even though France is largely supplied by Nuclear power.
- unpolloloco, on 05/05/2008, -1/+8This thread's about whining about the possibility of us paying less for one day (and rightly so)
America is based on a much more spread out infrastructure system - therefore, people drive more, so it is more affected by increases in gas prices. - headzoo, on 05/05/2008, -2/+8Who's the idiot here? The people paying 180%, or the people paying 20%?
- jub0r, on 05/06/2008, -1/+7Sorry to thread-jack, but Intelligent Design is not a scientific theory. It's more of an untestable hypothesis. Call me when it makes some specific predictions and proposes some experiments with which to verify its claims. At that point, we might be able to give it theory status.
Teach theology in the theology classroom and science in the science classroom. Why is that so hard? - DanMiller, on 05/05/2008, -0/+6Bardo, you do understand that there isn't a magical oil troll that lives underground. Oil will eventually run out and become scarce. The answer is to invest in alternative energies while simultaneously moving away from fossil fuels entirely. It is unlikely we will ever see gas at 1.60 a gallon again. The only real choice is to work renewable energy into the mix at a competing price. Oh, and for the love of god don't ever reference fox news again.
- WestonP, on 05/05/2008, -2/+8Eliminating the federal gas tax just means that the oil companies can raise prices that much more, and still sell the same amount. Even if it actually worked as advertised, it still only saves most people a dollar or two per tank of gas, while further bankrupting our government. Our real problem is that the government is spending trillions of dollars that it doesn't have, and just printing more money out of thin air, so the Dollar isn't worth very much anymore. The price of oil vs gold actually hasn't changed all that much, but the Dollar just can't buy much of either anymore.
Gas prices aren't going to come down until either the value of our Dollar stops sucking so bad, or we drastically reduce consumption. And contrary to popular ignorance, it's not like some amazing new technology needs to be invented... we can already do it, we just don't have the motivation to do it. There's still far more money in selling American symbols of excess (Hummers and Escalades on 22's with spinners, etc) than there is in selling something practical. People are still buying Mini-Vans with V8's, when a modern 4-cylinder would do everything they need. - GrumpyFan, on 05/05/2008, -0/+6The problem with addressing the root, does nothing to help them get elected. Because, the root and its solution will require at least several years of effort on everybody's part. But, they're all too short-sighted and focused on their electability for the next election.
- defwheezer, on 05/05/2008, -0/+6troll
- scientician, on 05/05/2008, -0/+5Shame on people for seeking responsible long term solutions to problems instead of short term approaches that leave us worse off? Really?
When you're in a hole, stop digging. McCain is calling for a backhoe.
If McCain wants to give out tax breaks, he should propose ending the Iraq war. That would save some coin to hand out, rather than borrow off America's grandchildren in deficit spending. - mfc5200, on 05/05/2008, -0/+5Apparently you never took Econ 101.
As prices rise, quantity-demanded goes up, which is not the same as demand.
Under your logic, you could never lower prices, because once you did, demand would increase, thereby increasing prices and negating the effect of the original price decrease. If that was the case, how could prices ever go down without a supply side shock? - nickerbocker, on 05/05/2008, -3/+8Our economy is why the gas prices are high. The value of the dollar continues to go down while the cost of oil goes up. Fix the economy and fix the gas prices.
